so glad you went back and looked at the paintings! a lot of reactors didn’t and without it you can have a whole different outlook/miss important parts of belos’ story. plus since it’s a pretty dark backstory for disney and/or we don’t have many episodes left, I don’t know if a lot of the full story will reappear again. we’re lucky we got it in this way!

The way that Hunter stayed deep in denial about Belos true nature even when evidence was presented straight to his face just showed him how much he admired and looked to him. All that love, all that loyalty… and for what? To realize that he’s a pawn? That he doesn’t care about him? That he’s not the first of his kind and he probably won’t be the last?

8:33 There's a lot to love about this episode, a lot of lore and reveals and drama, but I always really liked this tiny scene too. The moment Hooty mentions Hunter Darius goes from "we can't get involved, sorry" to "Wait, that's MY angry blonde kid, we have to help!". He *does* care :3

Back in "Yesterday's Lie", we were told "Two brothers were lured into a realm of evil by a real witch", and there was a picture, and two statues earlier in the episode. The two brothers looked like Philip and Hunter, down to the bird on Philip's brother's shoulder looking like Flapjack, so it's fairly reasonable to go ahead and say "brother"...

An interesting detail about the grimwalker book, one of the ingredients is the "bone of ortet" which is a fancy name for the original that a clone is made from. Also in "Elsewhere and Elsewhen" when Phillip crawls back to his home cave, in the back there's a skeleton under a sheet by a picture of grimwalker ingredients, so we are left to assume that he was
literally living with his corpse for years while he figured out how to make grimwalkers.

This is the episode that made Belos/Phillip one of absolute favorite Disney Villains of all time. He's Powerful, Cunning, Manipulative, Very Charismatic, and he can be pretty Scary when he wants to be. Plus he has a really cool design and a great voice actor. And as an added bonus, he's an irredeemable sociopath that the protagonist can't just Talk-no-Jutsu into losing. He checks all of my boxes, and then some, for Favorite Disney Villains.

The pain, the trauma, the emotions. Nothing says a show for kids aged 7-11 like that... huh
This has to be one of my favourite episodes, the story telling was fantastic here and the fact that we were shown that Belos was Philip before this makes the reveal to Luz feel more emotional in my opinion

  • @FlyingLine
    @FlyingLine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

(SPOILERS BELOW FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP YET)
Belos is an absolutely terrifying villain and actually one of my favorite villains of all time because he's just so realistic. His backstory aligns with real history very well, the way he manipulated everyone and came to power in the Boiling Isles is really believable, his personality is perfect for a manipulator/tyrant and him killing his brother for betraying his goals after trying to change his mind for a while is the icing on the cake. There are also a lot of parallels between Luz/Hunter and Philip/Caleb that make me like Belos even more.
And I also really like how the Collector is basically the opposite of him. He's childish, gets manipulated easily, hurts people for the hell of it because he's too immature to know any better, doesn't need long complex plans to do what he wants and is probably one of the strongest beings in the realm with a crazy strong version of that magic Philip hated so much. And yet Philip managed to "get along" with him for centuries to achieve his goals.

The binging of the "shit gets real" part of owl house. This is one of the best episodes of the whole show IMO, so many things. This really is an episode you need to rewatch and pay attention to the details and more specifically the background. Seriously theres a whole second story burried in the paintings in this episode and its really cool.
And fun fact, you said this could be a season finale. And for a while i thought it was because I watched it on Disney plus and for whatever reason Disney waited a long while to bring the last few episodes over so for almost a month I though this episode with hunter running off and such was the end of the season.

Whatever thought when they watched this episode.
    TRAUMA! TRAUMA EVERYWHERE!
    Spoilers beyond this point:
    So major stuff to explain
    1. Belos was theorized to be Human from the moment we saw his staff. And him being Philip was also theorized. Plus the scene with Hunter.... Yeah the Grimwalker/Clone thing was foreshadowed I think in the same episode that Belos had a casual face reveal. Which could have been Esclipse lake since there could have been an open book showing off the eyes of a Grimwalker matching the color of Hunter's eyes.
    2. For who Hunter is a clone of, Belos... Philip... Philos?(I just wanna see what weird name I can give him)... said to Hunter: "Out of all the Grimwalkers you look the most like him." Him could refer to Philip' brother who we see as a statue in the town of Gravesfield during the episode Yesterday's Lie.
    3. Flapjack seeing Hunter's face for the first time back in Hunting Palasmin also supports that the Red Cardinal had seen him before. Hinting that the Palasmin belonged to the guy that Hunter is a clone of. Philip's brother who is unnamed at this point. Which makes Flapjack be one of the oldest Palasmin to exist aside from the Bat Queen herself. Since Philip is a Witch Hunter. Which was something back in the 1600s. Famous example being the witch trials of Salem but they also occured in Connecticut years before the ones in Salem. So that's historically accurate regarding when and where Philip is from.
    4. Philip f***Ing killed his own brother for marrying a witch! As in the background we see painting of events that Philip had experienced. One of which shows Philip's brother and a witch together. The latter looking pregnant and is theorized to be a Clawthrone. We also see Philip and his brother fighting with knifes. And we see his brother dead on the ground laying in the same position as the Titan.
-The last one pretty much tells us that Philip never had a connection with the titan while his brotehr could have had one.

More like Full Mind, the amount of information they gave us this episode... I remember exactly where I was when this came out, it really hit that hard.
It's interesting the way they do reveals here, obviously it's not a surprise to the audience that Belos is Philip, and that Philip is from 1600s Connecticut (where they actually had the first witch trials in the colonies, decades before Salem!), and the fan theorists had also already decided that Hunter was a grimwalker. Though, the fact he wasn't the *first* did still come as a shock. But I think the biggest reveal we get in this episode is that Belos... really is just that evil. He doesn't have good intentions gone wrong, they're not trying to excuse his actions with a tragic backstory, he isn't even after money or power like many other villains; he literally just wants to kill everyone. He disguises himself as a scared child in his mindscape to elicit sympathy from Luz specifically, because he knows she doesn't trust him, but he also knows she's a kind and sympathetic person who's helped him before. He even points it out to Luz, she may not have fallen for his 'charismatic leader' act, but she still has been very much manipulated by him as well. He's been using everyone around him for centuries and he has no remorse about it because he believes he is right.

I love when Hooty says Hunter is in the mind scape Darius is instantly concerned like "Oh no! My kid!". He's the father figure Hunter deserves.
Also, in the book for Grimwalkers it said Selkiedomous scales are needed to make one. In the selkiedomous episode, Hunter was sent to slay one for the emperor. Basically he was being sent to get the parts for his future replacement.

You know already since you're caught up and all, but, Them's the Breaks, Kid was quite literally the calm before the storm, considering the show does not slow down after that episode 😛

Welcome to the beginning..... Of an end.
Acronym: Seek The Key Fear T *_H_*
*Slaps hands together* now now now, where oh where do we begin :) Obviously this will be a long one!
Let's start.... From the beginning. You see those paintings in the background? It tells a story, and a dark one at that. Philip and his brother, young children. Then one day, his brother (calling him Wittebro until further notice) is lured into this world by a witch. Philip goes after him, maybe to save him. Somewhere along the way, he gets his goop curse, but it doesn't hinder him. After years of searching, he finds his brother, and despite his fear over his younger brother's curse, is happy that his brother is here.... And introduces him to his wife. The very witch who brought him here in the first place. A fight breaks out. Wittebro dies, the witch chases him away. But he doesn't leave. He stays in the Demon Realm, for _centuries_ trying to perfect his brother, to rid him of whatever corruption this world gave him. And that's where the Grimwalkers come in.
The fandom has had this theory since Eclipse Lake. The book at the beginning? Look closely. The diagram shows the exact same eye color as Hunter. The statues in Gravesfield? One looks exactly like him, while the other looks like Philip when he was younger (we see that in a painting). And finally, the nail in the coffin, Elsewhere and Elsewhen, we see the instructions and a dead body on the table.
Add the fact that Wittebro looks exactly like Hunter..... Meaning that he not only killed his brother, but used his body to create a dozen or so clones of him (search up ortet, it was in the book during EL). All that he murdered because they "betrayed" him.
Now, Hunter's a good kid. He wants to do what's best for the Isles. He thought that Belos had the same intentions. But not only did that turn out wrong (you can practically see him doing the mental gymnastics to prove that he's good despite the contrary), but his entire identity, his life, _everything_ he thought was real got stripped away and torn apart.
    Just.
    Like.
    That.
Now onto Luz. She could have been collateral damage if it weren't for a single event. Helping Philip find the Collector. She thought that she was doing something good, just like Hunter. And just like him, that was torn apart. She probably thought that Philip died years ago, considering that he's from the 1600s, she didn't expect him to be alive. She didn't expect him to be Belos. She didn't expect this _at all._
And of course she's going to try to deny it until she can't, she's going to blame herself for everything that happened despite it not being her fault.
Probably one of the most disturbing parts of this episode is the fact that when Luz didn't "do him a favor and call him by his real name", Belos proceeded to use the memory of her in EaE just to hear her say "Philip."
And you know that Eda and the rebellion trio (Raine, Eber, and Darius) are going to blame themselves for not being able to protect the kids from the horrors that they went through.

Months later, I just realized something I've been completely overlooking: Belos' refusal to let people study more than one track is an important flaw in his plan! If Terra had known anything about Bard magic, she might have known Raine could neuter the potions she was giving them.

Well, his own coven, "the best of the best" spend their schoolyears focusing on one track too, and they seem outright incompetent a lot of the time, so it's safe to assume Belos is intentionally making witches weaker even on "his" side, regardless if it makes his plans flawed.

It's weird that Hunter thinks Belos has never done anything worthy of feeling guilt, and that he has "pure intentions", even though Belos has already threatened to kill him before. In the Eclipse Lake episode, Hunter was sure Belos would kill him, to the point he was digging his own grave. How can he be so afraid of someone with pure intentions, who does nothing wrong? Obviously someone who does nothing wrong wouldn't be someone you'd expect to kill you. Unless Hunter someone believes killing people for not doing as you ask is justified (and even "pure"), which is even more messed up.

Ah yes! The episode that not only was incredibly hyped up by the crew but exceeded expectations! My favorite episode no doubt.
And I like that you mentioned in the beginning that Hunter knows Luz’s name but has never said it,, until he saves her life in the end of the episode. Which is a nice little touch!
Because let’s be real, those two BOTH saved the other’s life this episode. So they are definitely closer than they were just a little while ago 😅

Woah, I just realised that Darius must've known that Hunter was a Grimwalker. That's crazy to me because I've watched this series twice by myself and have had a whole reactors montage to this show as well. In this episode Hunter mentions something about Darius looking sad in one of Belos's memories regarding the Golden gaurd. Perhaps this is what triggered him to feel inclined to giving Hunter the opportunity to live his own life, and maybe even motivated him to turn against the emperor..

The Virgin Helluva Boss Reactor: Figures out that Blitzo is Loona's adopted dad in episode 3 because he explicitly said so out loud, even though he had ALREADY explicitly said it out loud in the pilot.
The Chad The Owl House Reactor: Figures out that Hunter is a clone of Phillip's dead brother because of vague details in a book that was onscreen for 2 seconds at the beginning of season 2 episode 9, even though it wouldn't be revealed until 7 episodes (and 8 months) later.

the "king is a titan" theory had been floating around the fanbase for quite a while, even during s1, so you definitely weren't alone with those observations. though there was some debate about what that meant for the guy that gave king the letter (that hooty ate) that looked like an older member of king's species. some people said that that disproved the titan theory. other people said maybe titans live a very long time and that dude wasn't actually an adult, or that maybe titans can change sizes. but i'm not gonna tell you what group (if any) was correct.

Ok! Bit late, but i have two comments i was waiting for this episode so i could make:
1 - Remember in the Amity/Hunter episode, after he sees there is no blood, declares he has failed, and starts digging his own grave. Turns out, kid's got a point!
2 - I don't remember the episode, but when we first saw the "Grimwalker" recipe one the ground, could read the ingredients. One of them was the barf thing from the giant sea serpent thing that they were trying to catch in the "bounty hunters" episode. Which Hunter himself was sent to collect.

"Hollow Mind" is about self-deception. The fake past Phillip had created was not for others, it was for himself. He viewed himself as a hero, destroying evil. And that is why this episode is such a great episode: all of us are the heroes of our own narrative, in our minds. It's very hard to see yourself from a distance and evaluate yourself as "evil": we all find justifications for what we do.

That was a great reaction, and I really enjoyed your extended review and thoughts on this episode and its implications. I'll always be horrified about the idea of someone going through such lengths to make a grimwalker out of his own brother/friend. We know that one of the ingredients (Shown in Eclipse Lake, and we can see skeletal remains in Elsewhere and Elsewhen─although not sure if those were from Caleb) is "bone of ortet" which means bone from original source. The idea that Philip must have stolen/taken Caleb's body, and then basically cut it into pieces to use a part of it in a magic ritual is just....I can't wrap my head around it.

I'm glad you picked up on the fact that Belos's plan, this whole day of unity, is genocide - like capital G genocide - on witch-kind, and that it comes from his puritanical upbringing that viewed witchcraft as this satanic temptation. That nuance is something that... basically every reactor I've watched, hasn't picked up on yet by this episode.

Without spoilers-- saying brothers is a fair assumption! In Yesterday's Lie, Jacob (the muesem dude) says that two brothers got taken to the demon realm, and in the background in the same epsiode, there's a statue of two men we assume are the brothers! They look a lot like "Caleb" and Phillip.
As for "I wonder if he killed his brother" one of the background photo frames does show Phillip approaching him with a knife
