I really don’t know why a lot of people think the RT is big and heavy. It’s probably the lightest bike in the touring class. Most touring bikes start at 800LBS before people and luggage. I owned a concours 14 and went to a K1600B for the magic motor. If BMW could shoe horn that motor into the RT I’d jump on it. However the boxer is adequate but has no soul IMHO….
I think the perception of "heavy" comes from how physically big it looks, especially from the front. But still 615 lbs is a lot when compared to "standard" bikes that are sub 500 lbs. It's all relative: If you ride a Goldwing, this bike is light. If you ride a Z650, this bike is heavy. And yes, the boxer engine was a big ole "meh" for me.... I wanted to like it, but not on this one at least. Thanks! Ride Safe!
@@ghostontwowheels yeah I loved everything else about the RT it just seemed like I had to work the motor more than I cared to, I just want to enjoy the ride don’t really want to think about rpm’s and what gear I’m in….
Fantastic motorcycle. Extremely good handling bike for those that like sport riding, and a fantastic tourer as well. I have had K16's also, and aside from long days of interstate, the RT is the better all around bike. That wasn;t much of a test ride in terms of being able to explore what the bike's capabilities are. Also, most inline 4's emit high frequency vibrations in the bars, seat, and foot pegs at around 4500 rpm.
True, test rides are limited, but in the short time I was on it, my feeling was "it's OK". I didn't like the vibes from the boxer engine. As such, I also disagree with your comment about inline 4's as well, as all the ones I've ridden (Versys 1000, MT10, GSXS1000, Ninja 1000, S1000XR) were all very smooth to me. But different opinions, and that's OK! RT is a good bike, but not for $20K+, at least, not for me. Thanks for checking out the video. Ride safe!
I agree .. The revs of inline 4's are definitely smoother than a twin but all inline 4's have more vibrations than a boxer unless they start adding counter-balancers into the engine. Which BMW inline4 are you most impressed with?
That boxer just felt vibey as soon as I cranked it up. I appreciated my online 4 so much more on the way home that day! The only BMW online 4 I road was the s1000xr. But that was nice!
haha, he was a character, but he was talking with one of the shop techs there about their big road trip like 3 years ago, going up thru Canada and to Alaska, being out on a 1 month trip. so, he may be one of those BMW fan boys, but by golly he does ride too, so I can't knock his enthusiasm!
100% agree with you. And, dollar amount aside, I'd pick the Versys over this one in a second. I'd pick a lot of bikes over this one in fact. But ask me again in 20 years I may be opting for the more plush and calm bikes... lol
Thanks for sharing your ride. The 26k plus cost is due to all the tech BMW stuffs into the RT and most of their other bikes. As a comparison, Harley Davidson tourers like the Street Glide or Road Glide are the same price and don't come close to offering the same amount of technology. The boxer engine is certainly unique and may not be for everyone. The Inline 4 and inline 6 from BMW are much smoother bikes especially when it comes to the quick shifter. However, they don't compare when it comes to the torque and that's where the boxer engine shines with its shift cam technology. In real world situations, that engine's pull is like no other. From the looks of your video, the demo ride was like most in that you don't really have an opportunity to open the bike up and really get on the throttle. That boxer engine can get you up to speed in seconds compared with an inline 4 that might have more hp, but takes some time to get there. Have to wind it out. I have a BMW R1250RS that comes with the boxer engine. It's the sportier version of the RT and lighter by close to 100 lbs as a result it's quicker. The boxer isn't for everyone as it does have a rumble to it with more vibration than the inline 4 or 6, but that's what most boxer enthusiasts love about the bike. Thanks again for sharing, ride safe and enjoy the wind!
Thanks for the feedback and checking out the video. Even though it is loaded with tech, there's still a bit of "BMW tax" in there I feel, compared to other high tech bikes from other OEMs. But, I think it's just as we've both noted, I don't like the vibe (figuratively and literally) of the boxer engine, but to each their own. I guess I'm one of those that appreciates the ride on two wheels rather than something that just rumbles my junk the whole time lol. Thanks again!
I bought a 2022 1250 R/T it cost $30,000 with the trunk. The B.M.W. made in China screen protector was $80.00 and the B.M.W. bike cover was about $200.00 would I do it again? probably not I still have the itch for a K.T.M. Super Duke G.T. I like having a cool sounding engine, but I will admit the wind protection...braking and overall handling of the 1250 R/T is top level as is the fuel mileage/tank capacity I have done well over 300 miles on a tank it's a great Interstate bike as well as the Canyons although the handlebar vibration is on the side of annoying...
Yeah, that's a lot. But, yeah, totally, you can knock out the miles on this guy. If you told me to go cross country on it I'm sure it would be better than most. But, still, I'm just not thrilled by that boxer. Oh well! Luckily that's why they make different models! Thanks for the checking out the video and leaving some feedback on the bike.
The whole time I was thinking "yeah, man, if it only had an inline 4 in it" and then boom you're on the Versys... :) I just want that giant electronic windshield and shaft (or belt) drive and I love the RT's bars and dash look (but you can't really stare at those while riding, so hrm). For the price they're asking, I'm gonna need it to blow cold air on me in the summer as well as have an engine with more zoom and less fart. How does the Versys wind protection compare to the RT, in your opinion?
Same... it's a big ole front that looks goofy. From the saddle you don't notice... but yeah, it's big, kinda weird looking. I think for 2up touring at that point you might start looking at the K 1600 GL (I think). It's their 6 cylinder, like a Goldwing. Super comfy looking for the passenger too.
After much analysis for a couple of years, I concluded for me that the 1250 rt vs my old BMW 1150 rt is: Too big, heavy, and too high seat level, I recommend buyers be at least 5'11" plus and expensive, base plus taxes + high normal maintenance costs. Interesting. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I wanted to like that bike more than I did.
