Update from Graham regarding the swan….
Hello Jo - nice to hear from you. Robert also asked about this - but I saw his message first. I sent the following:-
The swan was fine but did have a build up of vegetation wrapped in some fishing line which was stopping it from going down. That was removed and it was happy to eat again. It was returned a week later. Graham

You have warmed my week - caught you completing your “all Canal” tour on CruisingTheCut and that heartwarming gang of volunteers who helped you on the last leg and cheered you across the finish line; and now today seeing the bright sun of August, acts of kindness with swans and fellow boaters. Really appreciate these August vlogs as we brave -15C here in Toronto.

My new favorite Michael t-shirt.☺ I wonder how many others caught on, especially before mentioning the petunias.🤔
Considering the various names given to the GRP boat it turned out to be kind of appropriate choice of shirt as well. Assuming the petunias were in a plastic pot, they too were having an encounter with a much more solid object sharing it's space!😉😅 Plus I can just imagine Jo encountering another rude plastic boat owner using the same words as those petunias (or words to that effect🤔).

The scenery on your vlog was gorgeous and I could understand why you enjoyed it so much. Great to see George featured and loved how he immediately turns over for a tickle as you approached him.....he is a rascal as Michael said. Don't worry about the woman on the plastic boat......how stressful her boating must be constantly checking other boats positions against hers. Her rudeness is sadly a reflection of her. That is a great area. I was down there two years ago. We took the van down to St Neots we found some really nice pubs. I've never knew there was such animosity between cruisers and narrowboaters until after I bought the Swamp Duck, it's incredibly stupid. I understand from a moorer in the Brighton Marina that there is the same kind of thing between the sail yahts and the powered ones. Wouldn't life be dull if we were all exactly the same. Thanks guys for this bit of sunshine on a really cold and dull January day. Take care you three cheers Alan x

More's the pity you didn't try and double moor against them. I think she needs to take some Valium if that is how she is going to react every time another boat comes into moor. Believe me a GRP boat can cause just as much damage , especially when they come in to moor at a great speed. As a rule of thumb narrow boats are not known for their speed. Edited to ask, how is the Swan.

40 years ago as complete novices my friend his wife and our joint 4 kids did a narrow boat holiday on the Cheshire ring canal. During that holiday whilst I was at the bow my friend piloting the boat misjudged the stopping time of a 70 foot steel boat and we, he demolished a pontoon with huge timbers and crashed into a fibreglass boat buy a chandlers. We moored further on and returned to the chandlers to report, as we entered we over heard someone say “ some F idiot just demolished your pontoon and nearly sunk a guys boat” to which my friend pipe up I’m that idiot. We lost our deposit and he never piloted the boat again so I can understand that’s woman’s concern as there are a lot of novice hire boats on the canals which in the wrong hands a fearsome battering rams.

    Many thanks

So genteel ! You managed to not refer to your neighbouring craft as a yoghurt pot. 'Plastic boat' doesn't have the same ring about it...

Do you know what the average debt of the water is it must be 8 to 10 foot to be able to have those larger boats go by .? does this vary much from one cannel to another ..? thanks hope you answer my question please

That stretch of river is nowhere near that depth. Boats with a 3'6" (1m or so) draught quite often hit the bottom - this will normally do more damage to a cruiser than to a narrowboat (where the propeller and rudder is better protected). The Great Ouse north of Ely is over 10 feet deep, but it's a largely manmade channel.

You need a new front bumper, or whatever it's called. 😄 BTW, how much does it cost to fill the tank?

Smile at them and laugh. Let not knaves or ill-tempered fools "rain on your parade". "Mooning" them will only have you up before a local Magistrate. Quite honestly, refusing to acknowledge their existence is the best reaction as it is a "lack of reaction". You have better things to do and better people to interact with.

Do plastic boat owners share a genetic line with BMW owners?

Please don’t stay under a tree during a thunderstorm; if the tree gets hit by lightning you could be hurt or killed.

I guess when your piloting an overpriced utterly butterly tub you can get a bit Kareny .

Bath Tub !!!!!! Ignorance and very rude.
Once went through a double lock and a Bath Tub refused to share the lock. mmmm

I don't mind boaters who want to go through locks along. I do mind boaters who are rude though!

No it didn’t. Like I said. I totally understand her being anxious about her boat. I just wish she had been a bit more friendly and a lot less rude!

While possibly satisfying in the short term the long term agro from the insurance companies etc. are just not worth it.
(Maybe sending the Wookiee along to see how close he really is would be a "palliative measure"

Sadly you get the 1 % that have no tact and are rude and pushy and blatantly thoughtless .Could be worse my wife has had her horse on many livery yards and has had to move yards so many times because of bitchyness and clichés .Don't know what it is with horse people ?or she could be just unlucky .Its like a children's playground mentality. We have our own field and stable now and life is good .The horse world is not very nice place .

That was a very nice cruise and locations! Did you end up getting fuel from the impressively nice guy who eventually came out to assist you? The cost was/was not reasonable?
I believe (not sure) that you stopped back in a spot where you two have spent a fair amount of time at up to this point in your videos. You were going for chips and not Nepalese dumplings of a specific forgotten moniker. Is that close by? Or am I off the mark of what area you returned to? If, indeed, that was a return.
That was textbook passive aggressive behavior, excessive aggression for the benefit of the mystery guest she directed the rudest comment to. No, you didn’t exchange names as she decided to skip right past the usual niceties and dive right into uncalled for…..rudeness. I don’t have a more descriptive word. You are nicer than I am, having my own brand of passive aggression in similar situations. We’re I thinking when that occurred and not still agape at their audacity, I would have have very politely began with a response to an unspoken but typical greeting with “Fine, thanks, and you? 1,2,3…No need to apologize, you have my sympathy. I would also be nervous in your situation. Is there much structure behind the plastic? How bad was the damage with the last bump? Did you go under? Or just a gaping hole where the bow used to be?” But most of the time it is something I wish I had said when it came to me later. As much of the rudeness and posturing was for the benefit of the mystery guest, I wonder if there was a decent pay off or if she would have lost points?
Cambridge? THAT would be awesome! How welcome are the better universities to an older and more established applicant? Are there many adult learning/continuing education programs in that part of the world? I am crossing my fingers and braiding my hair that your visit is successful! Do keep us posted?

Not sure how to respond to this other than to say we are sorry if you found us rude. We are usually very happy to stop and chat to anyone we meet whether they watch our videos or not.
