      Pretty sure congress doesn't have its own police force. Maybe the sergeant at arms? Im not quite clear on how "congress" themselves could arrest people without using some sort of police authority. I agree with you but it might be a pretty big leap to actually get these jokers in jail at the moment.

      @ there is a difference between a judicial subpoena and a congressional subpoena. Again, I'm not saying I wouldn't like to see these people in a jail cell but everyone thinking that congress can just simply arrest non compliant witnesses without an actual court order is mistaken.

If we do too much it will look like congress can jail whoever, whenever, for not following their orders. Sounds like another form of dictatorial tyranny to me.       Actually, they wrote several plot points that fit this bill. Plus Martin Sheen kinda looks like Trump. Both played characters who came to power in a gridlocked Congress, winning the electoral college vote over the popular vote, and dealing with Russia’s interference in the Middle East poorly. The main difference is that Martin Sheens character was at least inclined towards hearing intelligent advice. Both in real life and in the West Wing, fake presidents talked about the conflicts with WH press corps, complaining about the non stop 24 hr cycle that reduces information and nuance in the name of content production. It was so eerie to see the plot points happen that it gave me an associative recall around this thing I’ve heard called predictive programming. Generate an idea, use it in a story, and see it happen in real life. New ideas can’t be recalled once they are out there, and some ideas are put out there for precisely that reason. To skip their way into public conversation and consciousness and distract from your own idea of what reality should be.

      @Nehemiah Scudder The really strange thing is that those republican voters which often call themselves constitutionalists and claim to be for federalism and free speech, are often still supporting a president who is either bluntly against these things or acted against them in spirit to say the least.
      How to penetrate their bubble or to reach them is then again quite tedious. You would need to go to Fox News comment section and try to convince them only to get a reaction where you yourself are called traitor, libtard and what not.
      It still needs to get worse before it gets better i guess.

      That is actually the reason to "change the rules". Though honestly, we have rules that prevent this. It is just touchy to enforce the laws when he has a rabid base of middle school educated racists with assault weapons. I think the Dems have takes so long to get him out because they want to appear above reproach (keep him contained and wait him out), and also get more people aware of the need to remove or at least not elect him again.

    From the US Constitution :-
    Article 1(The House) , Section 2
    "The House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment."
    Article 1 (The Senate) , Section 3
    "The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present."
    And
    "Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law."
    A number of things to note;
    1) the House has the absolute Constitutional right and power to undertake an Impeachment Investigation.
    2) Under Oath, the Senate must, if directed by The House, Try cases of Impeachment. - the Oath statement is important as it reflects that the Senate must uphold the values of the Constitution above party political values. The evidence must be judged on it's value.
    3) If Impeached, the President is removed from office. If the President has broken ANY federal crimes, the President is liable to indictment for those crimes and taken to trial and judged as a common citizen. Any protection offered by the seat of the President are no longer applicable.

      I agree with your first 2 summary points, but not the third. Clinton was impeached but not removed from office. Impeachment is just the investigation. A grand jury needs to find Trump guilty first and then he can be removed from office. Assuming Trump doesn't do something insane like declare martial law or a state of emergency. That shouldn't work, but I wouldn't put it past him to try.

      @@osmium6832 That is incorrect. The House investigates wrong doing and if they choose, can then call for an Impeachment Trial. This trial is carried out by the Senate. It is overseen by the Chief Justice but plays no role in the decision making. The members of the Senate act as a Jury would in the the "normal judicial system. A Grand Jury plays no role in an Impeachment.
      The members of the house present their evidence to the Senate for the Senate to decide on. An Impeachment, though similar in process is a completely separate action to a criminal court. It does not follow the exact same process and the notion of "due process" does not need apply. It is an act only possible by Congress. My original post IS NOT my personal opinion. It IS IN FACT US Constitutional law. This is how your US system works and I am finding a hell of a lot of US citizens don't even know how their own laws and Constitution work and that is sad and foolish. It leads to people being sheep and simply following the leader

      @@tim_buck_too9126 I am no expert on the matter and vaguely remember a grand jury being involved during the Clinton impeachment, but that was unrelated to the impeachment process, so I was wrong on that. However, I've recently listened to a lot of lawyers and politicians on both sides clarify that impeachment is part of the process of removing someone from office, but doesn't automatically mean they're out once it's done. It's like being sued doesn't mean the other person gets whatever they want from you. It just means you have to defend yourself in court. In this case, the president has to defend himself in front of the senate.
      You said "3) If Impeached, the President is removed from office." and that's what I took issue with. That's not a forgone conclusion. I literally provided a counterexample from the past 20 years. He has to be found to have done something criminal enough to warrant removing him from office. It doesn't matter how guilty he is or how obvious the evidence is. He will be tried mostly by republicans (they currently make up the majority of the senate), who have a vested interest in keeping him in power. A substantial amount of them have to agree that removing him is more important than the embarrassment that their political party will suffer. They have defended every insane thing he's said and done up to this point, which is why I am concerned that even after impeachment, he will still be in office once it's all over. In a perfect world, we'd have an unbiased party try him, but we don't.

      So there are 2 parts 1) an Impeachment investigation and 2) the formal Impeachment Trial. IF the Senate finds the charges proven, the President IS removed from office. No if's or buts, no appeal, no nothing. IF those matters that the Impeachment was based upon relate to Federal Criminal Statues, the "former" President is no longer protected from criminal charges and those can be brought upon them as a matter of criminal law. Yes, the Republicans hold the power in the Senate BUT during an Impeachment trial they are held by Oath to uphold the Constitution above partisan political views. A Senate member who is found to not uphold that oath, can themselves face an Impeachment process.
