    I like this Flow chart. I’m currently set on Anesthesthesiology but it’s good to explore all specialties of medicine. I recommend visiting your local hospital and asking to job shadow certain doctors. This really helped me to narrow down my decision learning about the different environments and duties which fit well with my personality.

      @@alyssamedlife Yeah it could be a number of things.It could be envy, as you described. It could be that the person who gets good grades asks a lot of questions. If the class uses a curved grading system, their high scores "throw off" the curve for everyone else.

      @@alyssamedlife Not necessarily, for example if you have brilliant grades but like children you can still do Pediatrics, no matter what the flow chart says. My class hates me can mean they envy you but it can also mean that you boast a lot and are not popular and therefore should go into Pathology. If you have good grades ignore this part of the flow chart. There are some not huge nerds who do Pathology and some genii doing Pediatrics.

    The difficult thing is when you wanna do something competitive, but you decide late so you have to try and get published in the field, set up subI’s/aways, etc. in a rush.

      Hi I’m interested in dermatology and what do you mean get published in the field and set up subl’s/ aways and etc. What are these things? And as a junior in high school I’m applying this year to college in the fall and wanna know how I can get ahead in this very competitive field.

    • @triiii1303
      @triiii1303 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liangy Mendez Adnan A can speak more about pumping out publications and doing away rotations.
      In terms of how your undergrad college plays into your medical journey, pick a college that will allow you to succeed. By far the most important factors to getting into med school will be GPA, MCAT, and research so I’d pick a undergrad where your gpa/SAT are in the 75%. If your leagues above your cohort, you’ll most likely do better in those specific pre med weeders.
      Does undergrad name matter, you may be asking? Yes and no. It depends on the medical school. Most public state schools don’t care which undergrad you went to. Nearly all DO schools also don’t care. The only schools that care are the elite Top 20 schools and private medical schools not affiliated with a state. For the elite schools, it’s almost a soft requirement that you attended a elite undergrad. That’s not say you have to come from an elite undergrad to get into a Top tier medical school, but your certainly making it harder for yourelf if you don’t. Yale’s med school class this year has almost 90% of their class from elite private institutions. The elite undergrad institutions don’t make up 90% of the high gpa/MCAT/published applicants. For certain mid tier private schools, coming from a elite undergrad will give you brownie points as an applicant.
      So now you may be asking, what are the benefits of going to an elite med school? Good question. Here are some of the reasons you may want to attend.
      1. Elite medical schools have curriculums that are designed for you to succeed and match well. Many have boiled down pre clinical content to 1 year so you have another year dedicated to doing research for your area of interest and to study for your USMLE’s. Many has unranked pre clinicals that are pass or fail instead of grades. This gives a student more time to study and work on other aspects of their app rather than obsess about grades and class rank. Some even have P/F unranked for the entirety of the schooling ( Yale and Vandy comes to mind). Others have Honors/ high pass/pass or fail for clinical years but at many top med schools there aren’t a set amount of honors a student body can receive. Those who work hard and are attentive generally get the Honors they need for their specialty of choice w/o problem (Duke/Harvard comes to mind). Basically the top schools generally don’t feel a need to stratify their students, unlike most medical schools. One less factor to worry about.
      2. Competitive specialties are relatively small fields. Getting a LOR from someone connected into these small fields will go a long way. As you can imagine, Most of the biggest names in these fields are from the biggest institutions. This isn’t always necessarily true. Wayne state has a amazing ENT program and Iowa is known for neurosurgery for example. But in general, you’ll have a great LOR for your selective speciality if you go to a top school.
      3. The step 1 score is going P/F. This score was numbered b4 and was like the SAT for med school and a had a huge impact for the type of specialty you ended up in. Now that it is P/F people speculate that ECs, class rank and grades, and LORs will be what determine who gets the competitive specialties. As I have established, top med schools have a curriculum that doesn’t have students worry about grades and class rank generally speaking, give ample time for ECs, and have some of the best academics to write your LOR. So going to one of these schools would be your best bet if you want Derm.
      My advice is if derm is your goal, work hard now go to an elite school for undergrad that has as little grade deflation as possible. Harvard and Brown both come to mind. Don’t go to a brand name school that has low average gpas for its grads like JHU, university of Chicago, Princeton, Cornell etc. The top 20 won’t give you a pass for a average gpa even if it’s from a great school, and most public med schools could care less about your schools reputation.
      This all being said, you can become a dermatologist from any medical school if you’re capable and hardworking enough, but in general, it’ll be easier at a elite school. There’s a reason why schools like Yale/Stanford med make 6-9 dermies a year and it’s not just because these med students are bright.

      Jswirv wow wow thank you so much for this precious information! I currently have a 4.2 GPA and I’m gonna be studying for the SAT over the summer so then I can ace it in August/September! The only problem is that I got such a high GPA from taking honors class not AP/IB classes. But for my senior year I’m going to be attending a community college instead of studying my last year at my high school so that way I can get college credits. The only problem is that I’m sure the elite undergrad schools don’t have transferable credits but I will look more into that. My experience in the community college as a high school senior is more for the rigorous work So that I can become used to the amount of work for the future. Also what are some of the best undergrad majors to study to get into med school? In addition do you know of any high school seniors that can shadow doctors like a dermatologist, is That possible?

    THANK YOU so much for this. Holy shit.
    Been driving myself insane the last couple months while I nervously wait on an acceptance or denial letter to my community college's A.S. for Radiology. (doing a two year to be an x-ray tech to see if I can even stand that and retain interest before pushing though a 4 year out of city and into med school and such)
    During that time I've been sitting here looking up alternatives in case I don't get accepted where I can just finish my A.A. and either reapply to the programs at my cc, or go to a Uni.
    I've been bouncing around between an IT or Comp. Science degree and something in medicine for the last 10 years (22 now) so it seemed sensible to do Radiology to work with machines and still help others.
    Going back to the flow chart:
    - Despite interest in just about everything aside from Cardiology, I hate kids with a passion so I don't know about Family Medicine there. Although I've never had to work around them. Only experiences I can think of are in grocery stores and such when the parents can't stop their kid from screaming and crying for minutes at a time.
    - Grades are fine aside from the C in A&P2 (side effects from a medication is all imma say).
    - I am fine with cutting things but something about needles freaks me the fuck out, although I am willing to bet I can just be around them enough to make that go away. Otherwise anything Cardiovascular related is an absolute no go. (gonna look into interventional radiology procedures to see what that all entails)
    - Socially awkward is getting there. Just takes a couple minutes talking to get comfortable with the person. Though honestly a few minutes is all I imagine most people have with a particular patient so it'd always be awkward.
    So yeah, pretty accurate.

    what is the perfect subject to major in to go to Medical school?

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is no "perfect" subject to major in. I actually sat on the admissions board at Georgetown while in med school and learned a quite bit about applying, etc. Lately, most med schools have started to like students with non bio/non chem degrees. But, major in something that you enjoy learning about. If it's not bio or chem, then do the pre-reqs additionally. If you want to major in music, then do that. And then just do the pre-reqs for med school. That will be perfectly fine and may actually make you stand out from the majority who have a biology or chemistry degree. If I had to recommend a degree to a pre medical student, it would be to pick a major that after you graduate (and while applying to medical school) that you can make some income. Examples include: nursing degree, tech jobs associated with a degree, computer degrees, etc. I hope this helps and good luck!

The Step 1 scores are still numbered (for the time being), so many specialties besides IM and FM are options if you’re a stud of a medical student. Nail your clinicals, step tests, make pubs, and network. DOs place in specialties like anesthesiology, EM, Path, and OBGYN all the time. I’ve even heard of DOs placing in ENT, Rad Onc, and Rads. As long as you bust your ass as a DO, I’m pretty sure every speciality is in play besides Derm, integrated plastics, neuro surg, and orthopedics. Youll have to work harder than your MD peers for the same opportunities, but these doors aren’t out right closed to you just because you’re a DO.

      @@triiii1303 That's the biggest BS floating around. If you are an American, with an undergrad degree and do well on your exams and rotations. AND APPLY WISELY, THEN YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY ISSUES. It's expensive to go to caribbean, THEY DON'T OFFER SUPPORT and you have to teach yourself for the most part and you have no real guidance. They will drop you faster than a fart disappearing in the wind if you screw up on courses. American medical schools set you up better. On Top of that Caribbean students are still responsible to meet the same exact criteria as students from Ivy league schools and pass the same exams.

      News that matter I don’t understand.... what’s the biggest bs that I’m spreading in my posts? I agree with your take that opportunities are bleak for carribean students, but I wouldn’t lump DOs into the same boat as carribean MDs. Your not destined for primary care just because you’re a DO. Look at any match list from a respected DO school (like MSU COM). Students end up in a variety specialties

      Churninpark high school gpa has no relevance for your med school goals just so ya know. For getting into med schools, Your gpa matters when you’re in college.
      The average MD applicant that got an acceptance had a college undergraduate gpa between 3.7-3.8.
      The average DO applicant that got an acceptance had a gpa between 3.4-3.5

    What’s the difference between a physical medicine & rehab MD vs physical therapist?

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Good question. Physiatrists and physical therapists treat patients with the same types of conditions. However, physiatrists are physicians who have completed medical school plus four years of residency training. The role of the physiatrist is to manage a patient's medical issues as they participate through the rehabilitation process such as their blood pressure and other medical problems. Physical therapists then assist the patients in the rehab process so essentially they work together as a team.

    • @triiii1303
      @triiii1303 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      james roberts drop mechanical engineering if your goal is medical school. Medical schools don’t take into account the difficulty of your major. They only look at your gpa. Switch to an easy major that is still inline with the pre med prerequisites, like a BA in biology, and try your best to maintain at least a 3.7.
