    I love these fish, always fancied having a go at breeding them, seems like it could be a cheap way to get a tank full of them! Kept them years ago, fascinating to watch

    Back in the late 70s I tried for nearly a year to breed these little guys and ran out of time to get it done. We just didn't have the knowledge base we have these days with people all over the world sharing experiences. Over the years I often wondered if I would ever get back around to breeding these. I think with this knowledge and help from around this planet I should be able to accomplish it this time. Thank you!

    Hi Mark great work and watching your videos, and now finally in my new house like i said before. You really motivated me to get started up with fish I kept fish in 1978 til 1984 and lost interest. I like the system you have and what you are doing, the fine details of breeding and so on. You are great at what you do, please keep on trucking with your hobby. I have been watch for about 2 years or so and love your work. I live in Canada Ontario Barrie to give you some direction where I am Located. My hobby are Homing Racing Pigeons ( Valente Loft )

    In my shrimp tank they are in basically liquid rock with a ph of 8 in a 50gal. They dont seem to mind and its run by the snails and they dont hear complaints. Hundred of shrimp and way more snails...its basically a slow moving crime ring

Were you able to grow them ? I didn't find part 2. The breeding tank will be a 10l with osmose water + peat, 25°C ?. Thanks very much for your help.

    Thank you for the idea of the Subwassertang. I've bread them with guppy grass but recently took all of that out, so I may try that next time. For what it's worth, over the years I've never seen a shy Chili, for such tiny little guys, I find them to be pretty brazen. And mine absolutely love high flow. But, you're dead on re: the pH, I'd been working my tank pH down and switched to a new media from Korea that reduces pH, and it finally got to 7 (from 8) and that is when they bred for the first time in 4 years (they spawn. but this is the first time I've seen results). I've never seen the eggs, so that was very helpful to see it, thanks. I'll be looking for part 2. Thanks for the video.

    Very informative! Enjoyed your vids as usual. I kept these before, but I just couldn’t get a hang of it and lost all of them throughout the year. They seemed to always stay at the upper layer unlike in your video. Probably that’s them not feeling well. I don’t have a RO unit and the rainwater in my area is heavily contaminated, with a yellow color.

      I leave out my koi vat and let it fill up over time. The rain just falls straight into it. That keep the ph low. Don't collect it of roofs as it will pick rubbish and get polluted .

      @@MARKSAQUATICS Thanks for answering! :) I just bought JBL pH test kit 3-10 - it was the only one covering values below 6,0... Chili rasboras are my first blackwater species I try to breed. I has already succes with celestial pearl danios and bristlenose plecos (common ones and Super Red), and now I’m trying chilis :) Got to figure out how to make my water more acidic - I have an RO unit and I’m experimenting with dry oak leaves (boiled to make „water solution” of tanins), but without the test I was sort of „blind”. Going to pick up 20 of those today to put in the 50L tank that has been cycling for 2 weeks now. The only thing I'm a bit concerned about is the fact that today the GH and PH liquid JBL tests both read 7, though I too use rainwater. Unless someone in the family has been putting tap water in the tank behind my back, I have no explanation for this. Tested the rainwater directly and those parameters are reading completely different. Going to do a quick water change before I introduce them to the tank water (drip method). And have a little talk with a few family members here. LOL

      @@MARKSAQUATICS A few small dark wood pieces (can't come up with the name right away, but specific for aquariums and been used for years in my other aquariums, so not giving off any tannin anymore, or nothing visible anyway), a few small rocks (tested them with vinegar, no reaction), black quarts gravel that was already seeded,.... that's basically it. The water change with the rainwater did make it drop again though. So I'm still suspecting family members of trying to help me a hand while actually screwing up things. LOL

    • @TheOpelkoenjas
      @TheOpelkoenjas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MARKSAQUATICS Hold on.... now I come to think of it.... a week ago I did add a pouch of (rinsed) activated carbon that came with a new HOB. Could that one be the problem?? I did remove it yesterday before adding a bunch of Catappa leaves, and while doing some research on what could cause a sudden rise in PH-GH levels I came across several articles that say that some activated carbon have this effect. Anyway, going to test the water again today and see if there's a difference now. I haven't done a water change yet as I said I would, but did add a few liters of fresh rainwater (and the test did show a significant PH and GH drop already).
      This afternoon I'm going to pick some alder cones in our neighbors yard (with his permission of course), give them a quick "boil" and place them in there too. This should also help with those PH (and GH) levels. Gonna keep testing that water every day for a while now. Don't want the PH and GH to drop too low. ;)
      Cheers.
