Russia doesn't want to lose millions of people the same way America doesn't. They aren't going to war if they aren't diliberately directly involved- they don't want civilian casualties either! The smart move on their part is to look the other way. For China, China is basically a weak country compared to ours with a population in the BILLIONS in a small space. Iran is the big concern in my opinion, and the road to war with Iran included the taking down and destabilisation of Syria. War with Iran was always an aspiration of Washington, and this has been a bi-partisan foreign policy; it's nothing to do with democrats vs republicans, it's been a long term strategic aim. It just so happens that it may well come about under Trumps presidency. But, in order to take down Iran, her allies, notably Syria, had to be taken out first, so they would be in a weak position and unable to support Iran in a conflict, and of course because Iran is closely allied to Russia (more so than Syria) the stakes were always higher. There is a caveat though. The Syria destabilisation hasn't gone entirely according to plan. Assad has effectively won the war and held on to power, and Russian forces are already on the ground in Syria, well positioned to engage NATO forces should we decide to attack Iran on the ground. It's a very dangerous situation, and the west is not in as string a position as it had hoped to be in. If we attack Iran, Russia will step in, and it's likely that China will step in too. They will not stand by and watch the the US and her friends take control of the entire region and its resources. They can't afford to, especially Russia. IMO.
