It’s hard to describe to a non-rower how painful a 2k race is. But if you look at 8:10 you get some idea... dude just won Olympic gold and he can’t physically manage a smile for at least a full minute.
Tufte is an absolute beast. 7 Olympics behind him (2 golds, 1 silver, and 1 bronze) 2 golds, 1 silver, and 3 bronzes in the world rowing championships. Remains the Norwegian record holder in the 2000m erg (5:44) and the 5000m erg (15:10) Had a VO2max of 76-77ml/kg/min (7.2-7.3L), and a lung capacity of 7.19L Has done 140kg (308lbs) in the bench press, 185kg (407lbs) in the squat, and 240kg (529lbs) in the deadlift. In a Norwegian TV show (Don't remember the name, but it was on TV2) he did 28 consecutive pullups in his late 30s. Really impressive when you're that tall and heavy (193/6'4, 95kg/209lbs) He has also finished 43rd in the cross country skiing race Vasaloppet (90km/56miles)
You know, looking at this again: I agree that Mahe should have won, but look at the way Olaf's boat runs out. He has the most efficient rhythm of all the scullers here.
I don't think saying "should have won" is worth it. What happened happened. The thing that makes a great athlete is his tenacity and ability to come back after a defeat which is what Mahe did in 2012. Sure, food poisoning is a good justification but his technique is split in two, you can see that especially in the end (mistakes are usually more prevalent in fatigue) and this style doesn't do him any favors (even with a rumored 5:38 erg 2k and despite the food poising). This is just my opinion, of course I have favorites too, I believe this year it is Synek that "deserves" the gold (given his 2 silvers) but it is up to the athletes to prove us right or wrong.
Perhaps, maybe "should have won if NZL and GER weren't hit by food poisoning". I'm not against his style except for his extra blade depth, he does the Legs-Back-Arms very effectively. It's totally different from the Legs+Back+ar style of Tufte :). I 100% Agree with Synek 2016. He's been fantastic this Quadrenial. Back issues might play a part in the outcome later on, but those plague Mahe as well.
I feel for Synek. The greatest rower to never get an Olympic gold. (2 silvers and one bronze though) He is however the most successful single sculler at the world championships with 5 golds, 3 silvers and 3 bronzes.
Drysdale could’ve been the 3 time Olympic gold medallist sculler if not for the diarrhea had prior to the race. But still he was ahead of the rest of the pack and didn’t think of it as an excuse.
Hats off to Tufte, but if Mahe doesn't have food poisoning leading up to this race then we're probably looking at the 3-time defending Olympic gold medalist right now.
Not too sure, Mahe was also not performing excellently technically either, he was shafting a good lot throughout the entire race, losing a whole lot of speed. Such a small thing but definitely impacted him so much.
It is also crazy Tufte has 2 Olympic golds while Synek has none, when Synek has 5 world titles and was much more dominant than Tufte. And he even beat him in this race too. I guess Synek is just a huge Olympic choker, while Tufte peaks for Olympics.
Food poisoning in the days leading up. It was plaguing the NZL and GER camps. I think it also affected the NZL M4- (2007 Gold) and GER M8+ (2007 Silver) who both missed the A-finals in 2008.
…and I am from Norway 🇳🇴 and could not be any prouder 🏆🎉 Olaf Tufte is such a great guy and with a warm and big heart for everybody ❤️
You have no idea how much pain this event inflicts.
Will Mackintosh I think he means to people who don’t row

I dont think there are words that describe such pain
I do!
none?
Crazy that the three medalists from that race will very likely still compete in Tokyo 2020
Yea, about that....
Hahaha well 2021
Mahe …. :(
Nope. At least not in the finals hehe.
The rhythm he establishes right from the beginning and sticks with, is unlike all the others
Am I the only ons who saw the swimmer 0.02 😂
Olaf tufte just has this absolutely enormous trunk that gives him such an advantage
