What great sportmanship by Damir Martin. If I was in his shoes I would be so pissed but he took it with the utmost respect towards Mahe. A great person everyone should aspire to be like :)
I talked to Damir about the medal, he said that he was happy because he gave his best and that he would feel the same if he won any other medal. He also said Mahe deserved it because he has 10 years of experience more than him.
Shame this isn't a bigger sport because it has everything- incredible fitness, excitement, strategy, and the competitors give their all but are both humble in victory and defeat
I love how specifically these three scullers have had a healthy rivalry for ages in the world's and the Olympics and how they're all such great friends.
probably the greatest single sculls race of all time!!!! Damir passed mahe in the end but mahe threw in a VERY fast hand away propelling the boat just fast enough for him to beat martin.
After this race, Steve Redgrave said that Damir would have won if he'd just paused before the line and let the boat surge forwards. Literally that catch of the last stroke slowed the boat just enough for Mahe to sneak his bowball (and no more) ahead on the line
Shadowwolf TD5000 though steven is the most succesful rower of all time and his name will be honoured for many years to come, he wasn't what you'd call a "technician". He relied on pure strength in every one of his races so i'd say he isn't the best man to talk to when you wanna talk technique
Should've shared gold. when you've got people holding the boats at the start there's no point using equipment thats that accurate at the finish. it makes no sense. Great race.
There is a reason they have the metal gates holding them in. In any regatta outside of worldcup/world champs and olympics it would most likely be a tie
In swimming they race for 50m which is about 23 seconds and if the margin is less than 0.01 it's a tie..In rowing we race for 7 minutes and a margin of 0.003 is not considered a tie ..that's completely unfair they should have given 2 golds
Nothing against the Great Dyrsdale but Martin has also earned the gold for catching up with the great finis, he would have even got it if he wouldn't have taken the last row but just let it slide...

It’s difficult for me to find information online, so I am going to ask here. What would be an average speed a single sculler could go? If the person is in shape but no high level athlete. On average how long does it take to pass 1 kilometer on a scull?
On average I would say it takes about 3:50 or 4min to do 1000m (if you only do 1km and push hard) As for the speed, we measure that in time/500m(known as pace) I think an olimpic athlete could go about 1:30min/500m, maybe faster, but only for a very short time (that would be 20km/h)
