We are witnessing something legendary, gives me "beginnings" vibes, Gordon Murray type of passion in engineering and golden days of legendary drivers type of implication in the build.
The McClaren 3.8l v8 is related to the nissan V8 from the 90s LMP cars. It had a second life in the American IRL series with Infinity branding. Its not a nissan engine, it was developed by JWT for racing. McClaren bought the design from JWT then heavily revised it for their needs.
Love the engine-choice 🍀 Also the engineposition and the other racing engineering solutions: very low main emphasis, steering rack above the turbos, double wishbone and the position etc etc Cant wait to see this in action!!

Awesome work guys. Filippo from Aereus is one of the best person i know, his knowledge and his passion it's really something unique. If you dont know, he's also a veeeeeeeeeery skilled driver, he drove some european drifting competition with his mx5 nbfl turbo and then with his 2jz mazda mx5 NC. They're also Italian Drifting Champion of 2023 with Filippo developing a particular LS Mazda FC3S driven by Luca Fuschini. What a collab :D

Love the suspension. The front control arms coming off the custom engine cradle that is part of the chassis. Amazing..how the feel must be in the corners!!!
I've only started being interested in cars for only about 4 - 5 years now, it was just a means of transportation for me prior. But now I'm just so deeply interested and it brings me joy to learn about it and work on my own. It's something I Think about constantly. Watching things like this really motivate me to continue, It is just so cool! I hope to be able to work at a legit motorsports shop one day

Now, here's me hoping you'll be designing parts for Jimmy's MX5s, so I can then order parts for my own MX5 😂 Also if that's possible, I'd like to know more about the shocks you're using there, who builds them, are they entirely bespoke for your suspension design or did you adapt the arms to work with an already available shock, etc. - of course, if that's not revealing any big secrets.

Maybe I'm just being a conspiracy theorist, but I'm calling it right now: this car will be in AC2/EVO when it comes out. Misha mentioned in his ACC Nürburgring video that they'd be able to scan cars to put in the game and that it's something he'd be offering as a service (the Vulcan-Alpha website already advertises 3D scanning). This would be an insane way to feature that capability and bring attention to the technology.
Nice nice. Rigid chassis, custom suspension, engine as far down and back as possible. I like that Lapo even touches a little bit on material science, wheelbearing housing weight vs. strength. 9:53 hm makes me wonder if it clears even with full steering angle inwards and suspension travel (compression and jumps), but I'm sure you've got this thought through 1000%. 20:37 can you take a quick look at the general concept of lightweight intake manifolds? I knew someone who was constructing a carbon fibre intake manifold for the VR6, which could have saved up to 10 kg at an important place (at the very front & top). He abandoned the project due to personal reasons :( But in general I would still be interested in such a thing. Of course this would have to juggle weight saving with rigidity and heat resistance, but I'd be curious to what point the weight saving could be pushed.. Are you also interested in doing a hillclimb with the car? There are many such races in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, ...
Yes the suspension has been checked multiple times and the results are flawless with no interference. This confirms that the cad work is also spot on. For the intake it was decided mostly because of time schedule to make it out of aluminium. But a carbon intake is definitely possible, maybe for the next iteration. 😊

It's fantastic that you mentioned the ingenious technologies born from motorsports, solutions that seem like settled matters. However, my curiosity lies in how you will be tackling the engineering feat of connecting the steering rack with the steering column. It seems you haven't let the presence of a cylinder head deter this design. Also I can only imagine the two years of development heavily focused on mitigating bump steer. Its almost reminiscent of what Andy Forrest did to adopt his Subaru to a mid-front layout, anyways I'm so excited to see the final design as I'm actually thinking of incorporating something similar into a personal project.

Very nice to see all this in house designing with Vulcan Alpha. A Hp MJF printer would be the best you can get imo.Very functional and detailed parts with almost no post work needed.

@@munchkincatsnz Open class mate. section 5.4 " Engine modifications are free save for the engine must be based on a production engine from a recognised vehicle manufacturer." this means any engine swap is allowed as long as its from a recognised vehicle manufacturer. lots of open class cars use different manufacture engines its been like this for many years.

Working in an environment like this, any form of motorsports or engineering, is truly a dream of mine. I completed my bachelors and a year of law school, but I have such a debilitating neck injury from wrestling 8 years ago, that I cannot hold a job down or do school, so I have to go on disability and constantly struggle to make ends meet. I pray and hope someday that I can be involved in my passion like this, my initials are literally RPM.
Lapo were correct about quick-change rear diff being used in drag racing, although they coupled it with solid axle (which is better for drag racing, apparently?) instead of independent like in drifting or grip racing.
The V8 engine that McLaren(Ricardo) produces only shares some dimensions with the Nissan VRH V8 at this point. (Similar to how the V8 Koenigsegg produces really only shares some dimensions with the Ford Modular V8.)
Lapo really knows his stuff. Looks like VA is heading for the stratosphere. I can't wait for another Top Gear summit in 5-10 years: Koenigsegg vs Rimac vs Murray vs Hennessey vs Corenich. All the best for your new venture guys!
They're a bit on the heavy side compared to something like an LS, but when they're highly tuned they sound so so good 🤤. It's cool that its a Nissan engine in a Nissan too.
@@lorddoobsworth144 yes. That's how it should be. And yeah it's a heavy engine but it has the potential to make boat loads of power with the stock internals. Afaik it's a closed deck block and comes with a beefy crank

The Mclaren engine developed by Riccardo is the old Tom Walkinshaw Nissan R390 engine used at LeMans V8tt 3.5l - with changes for eg 3500-4000cc

The classic was the Subaru didn't meet the regulation's regarding the vehicles firewall and still was allowed to compete....

@@munchkincatsnz Open class mate. section 5.4 " Engine modifications are free save for the engine must be based on a production engine from a recognised vehicle manufacturer." this means any engine swap is allowed as long as its from a recognised vehicle manufacturer. lots of open class cars use different manufacture engines its been like this for many years.

Working in an environment like this, any form of motorsports or engineering, is truly a dream of mine. I completed my bachelors and a year of law school, but I have such a debilitating neck injury from wrestling 8 years ago, that I cannot hold a job down or do school, so I have to go on disability and constantly struggle to make ends meet. Lapo were correct about quick-change rear diff being used in drag racing, although they coupled it with solid axle (which is better for drag racing, apparently?) instead of independent like in drifting or grip racing.
The V8 engine that McLaren(Ricardo) produces only shares some dimensions with the Nissan VRH V8 at this point. (Similar to how the V8 Koenigsegg produces really only shares some dimensions with the Ford Modular V8.)

They're a bit on the heavy side compared to something like an LS, but when they're highly tuned they sound so so good 🤤. It's cool that its a Nissan engine in a Nissan too.
@@lorddoobsworth144 yes. That's how it should be. And yeah it's a heavy engine but it has the potential to make boat loads of power with the stock internals. Afaik it's a closed deck block and comes with a beefy crank
