Throughout nearly 20 years of using a angle grinder, I've had 2 cutting discs explode. One of the time it was because I was dumb, and didn't check the disc before use, which was damaged. The other time, the entire batch of discs were rotted because of bad/moist storage. Not cool when it happens, but still, I do not use a guard, just because it's a pain to reach certain areas with the guard on etc. And as you say, it's a risk _I'm_ willing to take. 🤷♂
I use mine without a guard also, but only when wearing other protective gear as well, high impact full face shield and heavy gloves. It is more versatile without the guard, no question.
I can't see what I'm cutting AND hold it absolutely steady with the guard on, so I go without the guard. I do wear safety glasses and gloves but other than that I'm just generally careful. People who wish harm on someone for ANY reason are not good people.

So I’m currently watching this video. And as a welding teacher. I heard you say you don’t advocate grinding down welds unless for fitment. Yes I agree with this because of aesthetics. But. What isn’t mentioned is that the weld reinforcement adds zero strength to the weld. A weld with a reinforcement of 1” high has the same strength as a weld ground completely flush. It’s when you remove the weld past flush when you start seeing weak point within the weld and could cause stress risers which lead to cracks. But great work man!! Love your projects!!

About accepting the level of danger with the angle grinder. If i remember correctly you said basically the same thing about the model A until you had a near death experience with it and now look at you, taking every precaution to make sure you're as safe a possible while driving it. You do you.

I did get sick of filling my nose with grinding dust, metal and whatever else so I wear a full face mask with filters which is better protection all round. Nice work as always.
Never such a thing as too complicated of a jig when it comes to getting everything square and true. Your welds look great Mike, much better than anything I can do. No worries about a finished product in an episode. Any fabrication process is a good episode in my book. Stoked for merch news though!
I use my Dewalt miter as a chop saw as well, but made a couple modifications that allow me to keep it from being destroyed (since I also swap the blade for wood once in a while). I machined a new throat plate out of aluminum after I melted the plastic one (which kept stock from sitting flat) and a tin plate that protects the plastic tube for sawdust. Since then, it's been great, but I'm looking forward to the day I have room for a proper chop saw (with a proper metal saw blade).
I've run without a guard for many years. I have had plenty explode on me. I generally wear a heavy welding jacket, so that's protected me many times. If I have no choice but to have my face in line with the blade I have a full face shield I wear. I also wear safety glasses as I wear glasses to see anyways. Honestly I am often cutting something in a weird spot or angle that the guard becomes a problem. That's part of custom fabrication. So do your thing man
As far as the guard situation goes, you know the risks, and you are willing to take them. You advocate others to use it and I think that is the most important part. To each their own. Same here on the no guard on the angle grinder. It would be worthless with the guard on. A long time ago I stuck my thumb into the cutoff blade and needed ER stiches. Luckily I missed the thumbnail. I now have total respect for the guard less tool.
I like your answer on why you choose to run your angle grinder without a guard. Not everyone answers this question while actively saying to run the grinder with a guard at home, and adding to that I respect your higher than usual saftey standards regarding your cutoff wheels. You should be overly cautious with them if there's basically nothing stopping the wheel from launching itself into your face
Mike, just a quick suggestion, if you're making larger parts (or any parts really) like the frame rails out of hot rolled steel, here's a suggestion to get rid of all of the scale. Cut a shallow frame out of wood, line it with a plastic garbage bag and place your piece(s) on the bag. Fill an old coffee can or something similar with muriatic acid then with an old paint brush or steel wool coat the metal parts with the acid for about 15 minutes and presto, no more mill scale. Then take a water hose, spray off all the old scale and acid and your parts are bare metal. Just dry them off and you're ready for paint, welding, etc. A few cautions, first muriatic acid will etch concrete and similar materials so flood the acid when you spray; second, the steel at this point is completely exposed and will flash rust in a few days; third, make sure you wear gloves rated for the acid.

Death wheels are, as you say fine if you respect them. I make sure I'm not in the direct firing line of a shattered disk, but 20 or so years and no incidents later its an awareness of my own mortality over a safety issue in the most part. Chassis members are looking great.
I don't know your age, and it really has no relevance... But you seem wise beyond your years, sir. Your remarks on your choice of tool use and decision to take time to step away from projects are the signs of someone who is realistic and self aware of their skills and project assessment. It's your project, therefore it's your job to manage the efficiency and quality. And you certainly have an excellent grasp on what needs to happen for you to complete your project accordingly. The thing with the grinder is more a personal matter, if you know what you're doing it shouldn't explode. For me i use a grinder with the protector on pretty much all the time, even though when i was young i saw a cutoff wheel explode and fly into my dad's safety glasses and then fly off across his forehead. No real injuries since the glasses took the majority of the hit, that still scared the shit out of me and kept me away from the grinder for 2 years after that. But now i occasionally use a grinder without the protector, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

Little pro tip , when you have to use a mitered joint, cut a matching thickness piece of sheet metal and just match the tubing profile minus 1/2 the material thickness, tack it to the one side of your mitered tube then match your second piece up and weld out .. it makes the joint waayyyy stronger .. for example if you have a 2x3 .120 wall tube you’d have a plate that’s 1.875x2.875 .. builds look killer man can’t wait to see them back on the road
I have agree with you on the grinder bit! 20 years of classic car customizing and restorations, and many many burnt up grinders. I have never had a wheel explode unless it being misused and haven't been hurt when they do. Although, it'll probably happen to me the next time I turn on one of my grinders....

Hey Mike, I am no expert when it comes to power tools (atleast at the extent you use them) but wouldn't it be safer if you used a Face Shield? You would still mantain the usefulness of the tool without the guard but if the disk exploded it wouldn't pierce your face...
Yes I was going to recommend this! If an Engineering Control (guard) is not available and Administrative control options (training, etc.) are exhausted, then the safest option is PPE. You can get very clear face shields that will save your head and not block vision or anything. Stay safe out there!
@@samfedorka5629 I also uses face shields. It also protects against all that dust and grime getting into your face :). My eyes are the most valuable thing I got. Regarding guard on the angle grinder I use one with and one without. New grinders have quick position of the guards and most of the time I use the guard to protect my hand and redirect the sparks - not for exploding discs
Good job Mike, And please security first. It is useful to remove the guard sometimes, but that doesn’t mean you have to work always without it. Or if you do so, protect your face/ eyes, anyone can have an accident, just try to minimize risks
Should check out the metal cut off blades! I also run mine guard less. Figured these would prevent a blow apart, was Leary at first cause they’re salty but the Lenox metal max blades are sick and last forever!
Ok, I accept your a pinion on grinder guards… just one point, 95% of the time you can easily use you grinder with a guard, the 5% is due to tight access. guards are very easy to adjust, move or even shorten all of which WILL save you and for the 5% of times the guard comes off easily 🤷
Grinders will bite you quickly but damn idk how many times I’d move the guard and stop and move and stop and move. Then just take the damn thing off and get the job done. Always use a full face shield and use it with respect. All good.
I have the habit of not running a guard either. Just make sure to wear a full face shield, good gloves, and a bib or other clothing that is thick enough to prevent puncture.
looks like the field of those plates has provision for more welding. how bout cutting tubing on 3 sides and bending remaining side to save 1 weld instead of 2 separate pieces... stronger too.
Not because you do ,but I also have many hours with an angle grinder guardless the guards limit it’s use severely anyone who says you should bleed out should change their tampon more frequently if they’re scared of a little blood. Love the content.
I have an angle grinder that looks EXACTLY like yours. I've had a disc explode and had no problem. The important things to remember are: don't put your face in line with the rotating part and use proper PPE such as safety glasses and face shields.
10:45 its not a finger guard its a spray shield to direct the sparks away from your face/balls. I also dont use the handle that screws into the head and both for the same reason. cant get into tight spaces.
Hey Mike, when u said i buy them(discs) in bulk, i had to think about the expiring date on those cutting discs ... in the metal inside edge is the date! people sometimes do sales on 'almost' expired ones :( this is also a common reason for failures (with or without guard ;) )
That pointer stick gets me every time. When it come to the grinder, if you know what the risks are and have a acceptable level of safety for you then you are good to go. Every ones level of danger they consider safe is different. Being unaware or misinformed about the dangers is well, stupid.

Awesome work, Mike! You're a much better fabricator than I will probably ever be, and I know I'm my own worst enemy and I'll leave my guards on or wear as much PPE as possible. I've been bitten too many times by being impatient and not doing things the safe way. It may not happen this time or the next 1000 times I use the tool, but eventually it will happen and the only person to blame is yourself. That's my hot take on it.
Yep, they're pretty useless with the guard on unless you're cutting flat stuff. You can also get smaller ones for getting into even tighter places, once you remove the guard.. Death wheel for life! lol
excellent progress made and I really like the slotted bracing. I don't understand why you wouldn't save yourself hours and just mig-weld the whole frame, but I suppose knowing it's pretty underneath counts for something.
Project Binky did an entire episode on steering rack and link location to get proper steering geometry. Might be worth looking that up as an example to help with your project.
Daily episodes are the thing of the future- there are thousands of people trying to become You tube millionaires and viewers want fast gratification- waiting days or a week for the next episode drives people to those guys who are posting daily. It means the days of the amateur creator are coming to an end and the professionals are taking over.
I'm not interested in daily content from creators. I don't have the time for that. There'll still be plenty of viewers of high quality content, like Mike is creating.
I am afraid those fishplates will hold water because the holes aren’t welded shut, it’s no comment. Just wanted to mention it in case you haven’t thought about it. I am a custom build yacht painter and always notice potential areas in new constructions which I see on you tube that will rot eventually. If it’s worth it and people are really motivated and dedicated builders I warn them
I’ve never used a guard. They are annoying. I throw it in the trash as soon as I get a new grinder. I’ve never had a disc break. People will always have issue with anything you do. Welcome to the internet haha.

I hope you or anybody is hurt with exploding grinder disc. Also if you are ever worried about your safety, using a full face shield (in addition to safety glasses and hearing protection) will add another layer of safety. Net result is take away one layer and add one, making it just as safe.

apparently you have cut into your fingers enough with a zip weel to warrant using a guard as I have and boy do they take a while to heel, thats probably why i use guards.

how bout cutting tubing on 3 sides and bending remaining side to save 1 weld instead of 2 separate pieces... stronger too.

Not because you do ,but I also have many hours with an angle grinder guardless the guards limit it’s use severely anyone who says you should bleed out should change their tampon more frequently if they’re scared of a little blood. Love the content.
I have an angle grinder that looks EXACTLY like yours. I've had a disc explode and had no problem. The important things to remember are: don't put your face in line with the rotating part and use proper PPE such as safety glasses and face shields.

whenever running grinder with no guard, simply engage safety squints first. safety 3rd.
10:45 its not a finger guard its a spray shield to direct the sparks away from your face/balls. I also dont use the handle that screws into the head and both for the same reason. cant get into tight spaces.

Hey Mike, when u said i buy them(discs) in bulk, i had to think about the expiring date on those cutting discs ... in the metal inside edge is the date! people sometimes do sales on 'almost' expired ones :( this is also a common reason for failures (with or without guard ;) )

That pointer stick gets me every time. When it come to the grinder, if you know what the risks are and have a acceptable level of safety for you then you are good to go. Every ones level of danger they consider safe is different. Being unaware or misinformed about the dangers is well, stupid.
Great work. I don't want you to rush any of your projects! It should always be the best you can do, and if that takes a bit more time, then thats what has to happen. Looking forward to seeing the Ford & Rarri finished though 😁

People complaining about someone else not using a guard probably never had to use one for any length of time, and should mind their own business. So many people want to nanny everyone else these days. There are times and places when a guard is just in the way. Cool build btw

Awesome work, Mike! You're a much better fabricator than I will probably ever be, and I know I'm my own worst enemy and I'll leave my guards on or wear as much PPE as possible. I've been bitten too many times by being impatient and not doing things the safe way. It may not happen this time or the next 1000 times I use the tool, but eventually it will happen and the only person to blame is yourself. That's my hot take on it.
Yep, they're pretty useless with the guard on unless you're cutting flat stuff. You can also get smaller ones for getting into even tighter places, once you remove the guard.. Death wheel for life! lol
personally hate not having a guard on and never really been a restruction for me neither in work or hobby situation
excellent progress made and I really like the slotted bracing. I don't understand why you wouldn't save yourself hours and just mig-weld the whole frame, but I suppose knowing it's pretty underneath counts for something.
Project Binky did an entire episode on steering rack and link location to get proper steering geometry. Might be worth looking that up as an example to help with your project.
That's a hell of a transmission repair dude, jesus. I found a wire wheel on a big pedestal grinder works phenomenally for removing mill scale
No guard on the grinder ever, like you said, respect the tool and chances are good you won't die.
Daily episodes are the thing of the future- there are thousands of people trying to become You tube millionaires and viewers want fast gratification- waiting days or a week for the next episode drives people to those guys who are posting daily. It means the days of the amateur creator are coming to an end and the professionals are taking over.
I'm not interested in daily content from creators. I don't have the time for that.
There'll still be plenty of viewers of high quality content, like Mike is creating.

I am afraid those fishplates will hold water because the holes aren’t welded shut, it’s no comment. Just wanted to mention it in case you haven’t thought about it. I am a custom build yacht painter and always notice potential areas in new constructions which I see on you tube that will rot eventually. If it’s worth it and people are really motivated and dedicated builders I warn them

I’ve never used a guard. They are annoying. I throw it in the trash as soon as I get a new grinder. I’ve never had a disc break.

I hope you or anybody is hurt with exploding grinder disc. Also if you are ever worried about your safety, using a full face shield (in addition to safety glasses and hearing protection) will add another layer of safety. Net result is take away one layer and add one, making it just as safe.
I'd love to hear a quick explanation about mig vs tig welding from you. Have to confess that I've been simply rolling with "tig = very cool" all this time!
It’s just more fun to do and looks better. It’s a skill I’d like to have so I’m working on it every chance I get!
It also has a lot more control. You can do materials other than steel, and small sheet/thin plate parts are much more manageable.
It seems those fish plates would be a lot stronger if those vertical cutouts went horizontal instead.
apparently you have cut into your fingers enough with a zip weel to warrant using a guard as I have and boy do they take a while to heel, thats probably why i use guards.
The color pattern on the fishmouth plates are so strange looking, just a wierd looking pattern.
