Usually your videos are great, this one is terrible, you created so much more work, and definitely didn't explain enough about dropping it in and how to check to make sure it's correct
unless your replacing the wires, leave them on the plugs and unplug from the distributor, its easier. Second, DON'T use an OEM distributor they are plastic and they are garbage and break the ears off then you can't tighten your cap, spend the extra money and get an all aluminium distributor. Third, not all engines have that timing mark on the front, mine does not have any of that and is a factory 98 k1500 5.7 vortec and can be a pain to drop in the new distributor sometimes. i had to replace my distributor when the dealer broke mine and denied any wrong doing when they replaced my engine. they had a zip tie holding down my cap.....
I’ve replaced my distributor and now I’m running a -20° timing advance for number one cylinder at idle. I’m fairly confident the distributor is not a tooth off as it’s pointing at or just before the #1 cylinder pin on the cap @TDC.
How about showing how to get to TDC on actual vehicle the distributor is being replaced on? Not going to have belt and valve covers off when replacing the distributor.
I was told by a GM guy that had a expensive scanner that my 97 Tahoe threw a timing code and it didn't have an option for a relearn. So they think it is my timing chain which I'm following your guide to replacing that tomorrow.
+Travis Carr Thanks for watching. If any of our viewers needs to make this repair, we carry the auto repair part shown in this video on our website. Here is a link to them www.1aauto.com/distributor/i/1aedi00024?TH-cam&CTA+Comment&C52feW4WQE
The 8 dosent have to to anything about aligning the rotor, cause the 8 on mine is not at the same place and you didn't explain how to be sure the rotor is really the tight way
I was going to buy one of these distributors from A1. But, when he said don't tighten the distributor cap too tight (9:25) because your going into plastic. I decided not to buy it. Because my OEM is plastic and the ear is broke where the screw goes into it right where he's talking about. This is a common problem with the OEM's. I will buy one that screws into metal. Why would I replace plastic with plastic.
Anyone know whether there is an o-ring or other type of seal on the distributor where is mates to the intake? Mine does not have one. I was wondering if there could be a vacuum leak at this mating point.
I've recently installed a distributor from you (part no. 1AEDI00129) and my computer states I'm off by 19 degrees in my timing. I've watched a few videos on adjusting the distributor position but the hold down tab on the distributor do not allow me to rotate by hand as other distributors seem to. Am I suppose to use a wrench on the square part of the shaft or does your distributor not allow it to be adjusted?
+Jason Copeland We currently do not have an auto repair video that covers this particular repair. We will keep this request in mind in the event that we need to make this repair in the future. 1aauto.com
My goodness my treeshade mechanic had mine taken out as it was making a squeaking sound and cleaned it all up and greased it all up amd put it all back together in 20 minutes without doing all this work.
I removed the distributor without tdc on engine. Should I find tdc without the new distributor in it or should I just align everything on the new distributor install it and then find ttc and reinstall? Thank you.
bring it to tdc and drop it in. that puts your back where your were its just the long way to do it if u didn't mark reference points. I do it this way everytime
Would a bad distributor keep my truck from running? 98 silverado k1500 pickup 4wd. It starts for a second and keeps dying. Changed fuel pump, filter, spider injector, crankshaft sensor, cam position sensor, rotor and cap for distributor. Was thinking it could be that little plastic gear at the bottom? Not sure. Any help would be great. Your videos are a great help when i do run into replacing these kinds of things though and i really appreciate the time you guys put into them
Dumb to remove the plug wires if ur reusing the same wires. TDC doesn't matter. Just make sure ur rotor is pointing in the Exact same position when u reassemble. Computer takes over n adjusts timing. Disconnect P.I.P to set base timing if u need to. Then reconnect. Computer does the rest.
I have a 1985 Nissan truck with double plugs 8of them and can you show me how to reset spark plug wires in the distributor and to each cylinder thanks fred
I need to replace the distributor on my 99 Tahoe but their website has a billet one for $81 and a non-billet one for $85. What's the difference between the two and why is the billet one cheaper?
The rotor button dident look like it was facing number 1 cylinder. Mine did the same thing and it wont turn over right. I followed these steps. My firing order is fine I dove checked but after install my rotor button was facing front of vehicle not number 1 cylinder.

What I want to know is what this engine was doing to warrant a new distributor my engine in my 96 Tahoe is half ass backfiring and sometimes kicking back it has a brand new starter crank sensor cap rotor spark plugs and wires and was running perfectly fine until I ran it out of gas one day getting perfect fuel numbers on the tester and good spark out of the coil and good spark at the spark plugs have no codes for anything
dave a Hello there's a channel on TH-cam called scannerdanner. If you want to understand more about vehicle diagnostics he's your guy. He also has a website called scannerdanner premium. It's $11 per month to be a member. He is a teacher at Rosedale technical college in Pittsburgh PA. The premium site takes you along in video format of his class lectures. He also wrote a book which is available in paperback or ebook. Which is to be used as trouble shooting guide in the field. His premium site has a 14 day free trial. Once there he has a video that covers this specific topic in regards to 5.7 vortec distributor and worn gear and symptoms of it. CAM-CRANK CORRELATION TROUBLE CODE (1998 CHEVY 5.0L) that is the title of the video and it is only available on his premium site. Again his site has 14 day free trial. You can create an account watch that video and leave before the 14 days are up. Or you can stick around and pick up what he's putting down and learn quite bit like I have over the last 5 months. It's up to you. But I would highly recommend you at least checking out the video about your issue. And then be the judge from there as to sticking around or not.
dave a I actually found similar video from scannerdanner here on TH-cam. th-cam.com/video/vs4vxeVVQkc/w-d-xo.html But seriously try scannerdanner premium for the 14 days. You'll learn an immense amount of knowledge from him whether you join premium or just watch his free videos here on TH-cam. The guy is an engine electrical performance diagnostic God. I'm telling you, you owe it to yourself to check him out. And you'll see what I'm talking about. The guy has changed my life!

Just a circular gasket

Does the oil pump slot inside the engine need to be lined up a little before dropping it in?

Yes, definitely and check for oil pressure immediately after initial start up just to be sure.

I'm sorry this video is confusing because as you were pulling out the distributor the rotor was not even pointing to #1
