Thank you for such a complete instructive tutorial! It's a lovely hat and I do like short rows though I've only just done my first one in Tunisian crochet. I'm not a crocheter per se, only Tunisian which I love for the minimal stress on arthritic hands. However who knows? I kind of wished you expalined from the beginning the purpose of chaining 37, and how to measure to get to the length and height for a hat. That being said is this for a women's hat?

Will this work using HDC(half double crochet)?

You won’t get the ribbing effect if you use HDC

Unfortunately it still won’t have the same ribbed texture it will be a lot flatter.
