I enjoyed this so much. My mom passed 5 years ago and I now have a ton of her things. Dad died 6 months ago and you guessed it, I now have a lot of his things. It is so hard to declutter!!! Thank you for the great tips. Every 6 months I try to donate a few more things, because you are right. I don't need the physical things. Thanks for the reminders to donate to those who may need or enjoy!
These videos about clutter, especially this one, have hit home for me so much. I grew up in a cluttered and borderline hoarder home for most of my life, and the burden of sentimental value was forced upon me. I'm made to feel guilty for not loving all of the excess clothes and figurines and gifts given to me. I appreciate them, but I can't be happy in a home where nobody can come over and I can't find any peace of mind. Maybe it'll be clean one day, but I just wanted to say thank you for these. They're helping to at least try and make small changes to have some sanity :)
The husband comment had me laughing through the whole rest of the video! Now I need to rewatch it so I am actually paying attention to your tips! Love you Cass 👍🏼
Thanks to you, I told my husband and my kids that I decided to donate anything that does not spark joy in my life. They are proud of me! TODAY I got rid of 20+ bags of things that do not bring me joy. I brought them to a donation center. There were three cars full and some of the items I have had for 25+ years and I do not remember the last time I used them. I am going at it again tomorrow to continue to find things that only spark joy. Life will pass me by trying to clean all of this stuff that does not spark joy in my life!
I take photos of my children's artworks, clothing & other stuff I am donating or throwing out. I than email it to their individual email account. This has help me a lot with letting go things & stuff not needed.
The book actually tells you to do that. It says to bid fairwell and thank the item for the joy it brought you. You should read the book she mentioned in the beginning they have the audio on TH-cam right now.
Based on kondo's book if I'm only supposed to have the things that bring me joy, I would only have my child, a bed, a tv & a bag of chips in my house other than that nope nothing else....well my husband on the weekends! LOL!!! 😉
Great video! We are officially making a big scary change. We are donating our much loved but very used china and replacing it. For 16 years we have used my grandmother's vintage fine wedding china (circa 1920s) as our everyday china. It has been enjoyed by 4 generations for almost 100 years. We are replacing it with our own fine wedding china which we are now going to use as our everyday china. What good is it sitting in the china cabinet only to be used at Christmas and Easter? Heck we may even use the good silverware everyday! We have stopped holding our breath waiting for the Queen to visit ☺Thank you for all your great decluttering videos. They really help!
😂 "Sometimes my husband doesn't give me joy" Omg I not only do you motivate me but you make me laugh and I probably needed that more than the motivation 🤗 Thank you for staying "real" for so many years!
I let out a huge sigh of relief when you said you weren't a minimalist. That's the hardest part of finding declutter/organizing videos and inspiration! I don't want to have a bare-bones house, I like a cozy warm place, but I just need to weed through! Good video!
Cassie, I agree with most of what you say, but I would say one thing. When it comes to porcelain cows, china and other ornaments, before donating it to charity it might be a good idea to get it valued. Here in the UK there a quite a few TV programmes about people who collect this sort of stuff, and it's surprising how much some of it can be worth. Even old toys in good condition can be very valuable at auction.
I totally agree with what you said about the "the life changing magic of tidying up". While I see merit in what Marie Kondo outlines, I think she forgets that human beings and we do need to think of more than what works for us, but what works for our families. Loved this video!
You are awesome. I SO agree with everything you said. My aunt recently died and my mom had the ah ha moment that my aunt's things only meant something to my aunt. It really didn't mean anything to my mom, my cousin or anyone in our immediate family. So my aunt's things will be donated to someone else to enjoy. I am not the tidiest person, but I do regularly purge what we don't need. Thanks for finally telling people it's ok to let go.
Oh My Gosh!!!! This is the BEST video ever for me!!!!!! I have so much and I mean SO MUCH SENTIMENTAL CLUTTER in my home right now. I am so overwhelmed with it. You have absolutely been a life saver for me. Now, I can get rid of these things and not feel guilty about it at all. I can take pictures of all my special memories without having to keep all the items, YAY!!!!! I believe that I CAN do this now. Thank you so very much for your ideas and help. I truly love all your videos. Keep them coming. Have a Fabulous and Blessed Day :)
Jan.2021...this helped me alot. We are moving after 40 years in the same house...8 kids raised here. I have sentimental items from both my grandmother's, items over 100 years old. I donated one to a heritage centre in a small town where one grandmother lived and another picture is going to a 97 year old aunt.(her family will have to deal with it !) I am on round 5 of the minimalism game...sooooo good! I am much stronger in decluttering and have become more 'ruthless'. Sure wish I had done this as my kids grew up....we drowned in clutter! Thank you for your realistic look at sentimental items. I too did not get much out of the sparking joy idea!
I've been handed baby clothes from parental family members as well. It means something to the mom, but not really to the kids. When you have your own kids, you either have new clothes or gently worn clothes given to you by someone who recently had kids. Even with the cute contained binders, (and they are adorable and neat momentos) for me, I would not want 13 years of binders from my childhood. (maybe one or two?) It means much more to moms, it seems, than kids. My husband wanted none of the crafts he made as a kid that his mom gave back to him as an adult. I was advised to keep a high chair for my grandkids that I used for mine. No. I gave it to someone who was able to use it, who was pregnant. She really appreciated it. Bless others, now. Let it go. (Plus stuff deteriorates in storage.) Ick. Let it go.
I love your videos!! To be truthful I love Marie Kondo's book, it's the ONLY decluttering book that actually made sense to me. I've held on to too much crap that didn't bring me joy just because I feared getting rid of it but after reading her book I went through my holiday decorations first and was pretty ruthless with what I purged. Our basement now has room to breath and I have a lot less totes that I've sold on Craigslist for someone else to store their "stuff" in!!!
I’m binge watching your channel and got the idea to comment on the items I decluttered while watching/listening to this video: An old laundry basket left at my home by a friend, a baby food pouch maker, a food grinder to mush food for baby pouches, a 2 tiered metal citrus holder that I declare made the fruit go bad quicker, a huge colander that I never use, and a multi pot crockpot gifted to us when we married. Thank you!!!
Great tips!! I take pictures of my kiddos art work and at the end of the year order them in a photo book...We also have a bin that sits next to the laundry room... labeled donate. I have ""trained"" The kids & husband to drop their unwanted, can't fit items in it...works like a charm. Thx for sharing
I actually don't use the method of box with an expiration date. When I find something in my home I'm not sure "sparks joy" for example a sweater I use Maries method of using it to see if I love it or not. In most cases it sorta gives closure to use it one last time to make sure you dont want it and you'll be happy to donate that item. But I can see that expiration date box working in some cases. Thanks!
Cass, thanks so much for doing what you do! I've been watching you since you were Malitose79, and your "The Burden of Guilty Clutter" video had a huge impact on me. I've been truly inspired by so many of your videos, and I'm always happy to see that you've posted a new one. You have actually inspired me to start my own little channel -- I just uploaded my first video yesterday. You've been my cleaning/organizing mentor for years, and your channel continues to be a blessing to me. All the best!
I just found you on TH-cam and I'm so excited I found you! I need to declutter my house and I have been struggling to go through it all and organize it. Your videos are getting me excited to organize my house!
I will use your quote as my ~meditation~ before I tackle another declutter project! On Guilty Clutter, you said, "It's also costing me money because it's taking away the value of my home. Having a cluttered home and having a bunch of things out that, you know, is unattractive or you're not using is devaluing your home. It's costing you money."
Loved this and it came at the perfect time. I am trying to box up things we aren't currently using in our apt/centemental items. After watching this I have added 4 more bags to the goodwill pile.
I am soooo glad I have found your page, I really needed to hear this especially from some one who understands, I have a wardrobe of clothes and things that I have not touched cos I just can't imagine where to start! Thank you, new subscriber here
My grandma saved a bunch of stuff I did or made as a kid too. She gave it to me a few years back and I looked at it and was mortified that I used the wrong your/you're in the 4th grade and then I shredded it. LOL That, and videos such as these, really helped me put into perspective what is worth keeping when it comes to kids' artwork. I have a binder just like yours and I'm sure it will expand into several binders over the years. But I have a system. I take a photo of EVERYTHING whether it goes in the binder or not, and then my favorite things go in the binder if they are small enough. If they are too big, I display them in a certain spot in my house until I'm sick of looking at them and then they are recycled. (I could only look at the red and purple paint for so long). The stuff that isn't my favorite is recycled right after I take the photo. It's so easy and I have no regrets since I have this system in place. I'm sure one day years from now I will reevalute what is in the binders too. Thank you for this video!
This was such a great video. Thank you! You are looking so healthy and great. Your hair is shiny and beautiful, and your skin is glowing. You are managing your life so well, ever heading in the right direction and accomplishing so much that blesses your household. Great job taking care of you too. I hope I can follow in your footsteps.
I loved the husband line, still laughing about it!. Great tips, I'm a just-in-case hoarder, going to purge my garage tomorrow. Thank you for the inspiration xx
For me that has helped me clutter out items has been , when it was given to you it served it purpose and it made you happy that's the memory you hold on to not the item. Its helped me declutter alot.
Wow...this was the greatest information you shared! I will take pictures and have a relative put my sentimental things on Ebay...thank you again for giving me an 'out' of my holdings!
About kid's artwork, You can take that photo of it and if you scrapbook, print it out as a backdrop for some photos of that age. That way, you can have the memory but you don't need hang onto it. Cas, you got it!
You look great!! Great ideas!! Thanks for sharing!! I am organized now. I started watching your Channel 3 years ago and you helped me a great deal!! I was always clean not organized 😩I want to say Thank You!!! 😊💖💖💖💐💐💐
I do a things with baby blankets that I think is great. I took all my kids receiving blankets and made them into toddler bed sized quits, one each. When they get older they can use them as lap blankets. I'm also working on making memory quilts for my older kids out of their school shirts (you know the ones they wear once for some kind of school event but they HAVE to have it) I made one for my baby sister before she went off to school and she loves it. It's one item thats much more useful than a pile of old shirts, and if they want to donate it they can too
ok, my book group picked the Tidy book to read. I liked parts but I have been sitting here feeling guilty for not liking or even being able to use it all. Thank you! I feel better!
Thanks for sharing this, it inspires me and I love peter walsh books too. I have a few of my grandmothers handmade blankets and one of them dry rotted. I got rid of one and still have one that its okay but it just sits in a closet. I agree it has guilt all over it. I do get rid of a few clothes items at a time. For me this is what works best.
Peter Walch is amazing! I don't remember the title of the book but when he said we are being selfish holding on to all this stuff, wow... that really hit home. I also liked how he spoke about honoring our stuff and if we have it stashed away in a dusty box we are not honoring it. I had a hard time reading the book mentioned here in the video. Something about it turned me off.
the box idea is amazing! I always feel like if I get rid of something I'll need it that week even if I haven't used it in years haha. we just had a yard sale and I sold some things that I haven't used in over two years and I somehow found a way to all of sudden need them as soon as they are gone lol
I'm very upset by your comment about porcelain cows. I am an avid collector - I have them on every shelf and in every nook and cranny in my home, which looks amazing! (ONLY KIDDING! LOL.!) Seriously, though love the tips - especially the time capsule donate box - that's a fab idea. If there is a 'virgin purger', then that makes me a 'lady of the night'! I have become ruthless over the years - gone through that 'decluttering, but still keeping too much stuff' stage and learnt my lesson. However, it's a continuous work in progress - there's always more that needs shoving out the door! (And that does include some husbands from what I see happening in some homes!) Tfs and making me smile.
i always struggled with getting rid of stuff. i didn't know how much crap i had till i had to move and had to pack up everything into boxes. i realized i should really go thru everything and get rid of things i don't use or just sitting there taking up space.
Loved loved loved this video! I have a similar problem to a few others here in that I only like to keep what I use and/or love but my husband (and now my son as well) feel they have to hold on to EVERYTHING. Very frustrating. Around a year ago my in laws downsized. I swear I don't think they threw away anything since 1950! We ended up with a LOT of stuff which my husband didn't show any sign of wanting/needing in the past but now can't seem to part with. We only have one child and I really don't want to "pass the crazy"(love that quote!) onto to him. Reading lots of ideas here. Thanks so much! Ps sorry for the rant :-(
The book made me really look at each individual item I had and I was really able to let go of a lot of stuff 4 full garbage bags of clothes 4 boxes of toys and 3 full garbage bags of paper. It felt so good to get rid of so much stuff that didn't bring me any joy, or that did at one point but not anymore.
omg u make me laugh, the husband joke was to funny, I laughed so much my hubby asked what's so funny of course I showed him, he just shook his head. .giggle and walked away. YOU MAKE SO MUCH SENSE IT'S CRAZY, since iv been subscribe to ur channel I have made great progress, yes even my husband is impressed, so thanks a million girl. and PS,U LOOKGOOD
Guilty Clutterbug right here :( only because I have a guilt tripping mother in law who is a hoarder. If I get rid of something, I won't ever hear the end of it.
oh my goodness needed this video today. I was standing in my basement looking at my husband and my childhood keepsakes trying to figure out what to do with them.
Thank you for the encouragement. I had a very hard time letting my youngest daughter's baby clothes go. I took pictures of outfits that I especially liked before selling them. I am currently reorganizing before school starts and am having a hard time letting go of toys that all of my kids played with, especially ones that my mom says will be collectors items one day. Any advice? I have a history of selling things because I felt guilty keeping them, then tracking them down and rebuying them.
That's so sweet!

Omg I not only do you motivate me but you make me laugh and I probably needed that more than the motivation 🤗
Thank you for staying "real" for so many years!
"Let's not pass the crazy on" Love it!!! Thank you!!
The take a picture thing helped me so much when letting things go.
I let out a huge sigh of relief when you said you weren't a minimalist. That's the hardest part of finding declutter/organizing videos and inspiration! I don't want to have a bare-bones house, I like a cozy warm place, but I just need to weed through! Good video!
Cassie, I agree with most of what you say, but I would say one thing. only if they bring you joy when you look at them...
What you said about your husband LOL :) I just love your sense of humor :)
😁me too. I love her sense of humor!
I am going to do a "Time Capsule Box" but I will use a much larger box. Thanks for the idea.
Love the box idea! You have inspired me. And you look great.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for not being in love with that minimalist book cover to cover! Yes!
I totally agree with what you said about the "the life changing magic of tidying up". While I see merit in what Marie Kondo outlines, I think she forgets that human beings and we do need to think of more than what works for us, but what works for our families. Loved this video!
Loved Kondo's book but I'm stuck on some of my sentimental items now... so... this video was perfect for me. thanks!
Thanks cassie this helps so much ! I am doing the big de clutter room by room and this video was really inspiring 😄

An old laundry basket left at my home by a friend, a baby food pouch maker, a food grinder to mush food for baby pouches, a 2 tiered metal citrus holder that I declare made the fruit go bad quicker, a huge colander that I never use, and a multi pot crockpot gifted to us when we married.

I loved the husband line, still laughing about it!. Great tips, I'm a just-in-case hoarder, going to purge my garage tomorrow. Thank you for the inspiration xx
Great tips for NOT holding onto Sentimental Items! I will use it and pass this along! Thanks!
Brilliant video! Especially loved the time capsule box!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I read the KonMari book also, but I agree with what you said!
love the idea of letting some of my kids art pictures go I have 3 boxes full think I will start going through them thanks for the tip !
For me that has helped me clutter out items has been , when it was given to you it served it purpose and it made you happy that's the memory you hold on to not the item. Its helped me declutter alot.

I love the time capsule box idea. I’ve been doing this.
I am in the middle of decluttering. it is making me feel great!!!

I’m addicted to your channel!! Your awesome, thank you for sharing.😃
thank you for this video awesome tips. God bless you, have a wonderful day.
this made so much sense, i have so much stuff that belonged to my mom, i really do not know what i have got, so is it really worth keeping onto
Great advice, I really need to work on this. Love your videos!
Yes, definitely you have inspired me! Thank you for another great video!!!!

I'm also working on making memory quilts for my older kids out of their school shirts (you know the ones they wear once for some kind of school event but they HAVE to have it) I made one for my baby sister before she went off to school and she loves it. It's one item thats much more useful than a pile of old shirts, and if they want to donate it they can too
🎶🎶🎶🎶 Let it go 🎶🎶Let it go 🎶🎶. Great points I am going to do it!!! Thank you 😀
Thank you for the great tips, Cas.
Wow!!! So many of these hit the nail on the head. Lol. I am so guilty of it. Lol. Thanks for the tip. Wish me luck.
I like the donation box idea. TFS
Some nice new thoughts I had not heard! Thx so much!
ok, my book group picked the Tidy book to read. I liked parts but I have been sitting here feeling guilty for not liking or even being able to use it all. Thank you! I feel better!
Thank you so much loved the way you explained
Love-love-love this video!!! You sooooo right!!!! Especially about the book))))
This was so helpful for me! Thank you!!
I love every videos that you do, they are always so usefull for me. Thank you sooooooo much and have a lovely day
I'm very upset by your comment about porcelain cows.
I so needed this lol I have such a hard time getting rid of guilty clutter!
Virgin purger! porcelain cows! I love your channel. thanks for the tips. I'm slowly getting my house and life organized. 😀
My mom would hold on to old old stuff even shoes that don't fit her... And I donated the clutter habit!! I worked so hard to letting things go
Really great ideas
Ps sorry for the rant :-(
THANK YOU! Very helpful
Wow! That is awesome!
omg u make me laugh, the husband joke was to funny, I laughed so much my hubby asked what's so funny of course I showed him, he just shook his head. .giggle and walked away. YOU MAKE SO MUCH SENSE IT'S CRAZY, since iv been subscribe to ur channel I have made great progress, yes even my husband is impressed, so thanks a million girl. and PS,U LOOKGOOD
"don't pass the crazy on" You are fabulous!
Love your videos. You're looking great!
Guilty Clutterbug right here :( only because I have a guilt tripping mother in law who is a hoarder. If I get rid of something, I won't ever hear the end of it.
Tell her it is upstairs in a box and you are rotating your items you enjoy... DONATE!! Will she come and clean all that clutter for free?
Erin Docherty My MIL died recently. Time to purge.
Erin Docherty
I can relate. Not MIL but my own M.
I agree with you let it go.Love your videos thnks
Great information ! I'm decluttering but my husband won't part with any of his unused stuff and he has a lot! How do I handle that situation?
oh my goodness needed this video today. I was standing in my basement looking at my husband and my childhood keepsakes trying to figure out what to do with them.
Love this!!! Great advise.
You're so funny! I watch your videos everything night.
Such great tips!
Thanks for the tips dear👍🏼😊
Thank you for the encouragement. I had a very hard time letting my youngest daughter's baby clothes go. I took pictures of outfits that I especially liked before selling them. I am currently reorganizing before school starts and am having a hard time letting go of toys that all of my kids played with, especially ones that my mom says will be collectors items one day. Any advice? I have a history of selling things because I felt guilty keeping them, then tracking them down and rebuying them.
