  • Today we finally leave the 2000s as we look at the first game of the modern Tales era. After practically perfecting the 3D Tales formular though 3 critically acclaimed JRPGs, Team Symphonia looked to push the franchise to new heights with an ambitious new art direction combined with an ambitious story as well. With the team on the clock to meet the series 15th anniversary could Team Symphonia create the ultimate Tales game?

    On the topic of Milla’s voice performance, I agree with what you said about it, how intentional it was and how it develops over the story. It’s the same situation as with Luke in Abyss - he starts out as a whiny, selfish dick, until he gets his world rocked and learns some uncomfortable truths about himself, bringing a change to his demeanor and character. Likewise, his voice acting goes from annoying to one of the most solid in the game, again, intentionally. Milla‘s the same way (minus the self-centered part; she just hasn’t learned to connect with humanity)
    Also, HARD agree on Xillia having the best opening. That song and animation are freaking incredible, and easily my absolute favorite in the series. It goes so hard and is just… immaculate.

    Maybe it's a detail but I like how those jrpgs fully embrace fantasy designs instead of "oh let's make this realistic and practical".

    Apparently, the correct way to pronounced Ex-ill-ee-ahh, based on the kana on the box in japan. Regardless, I agree that either pronunciation sounds dumb because the name itself is kinda dumb. Still a good game though.

      I like the name itself. But I wouldn't lie if I don't wonder why they gave it an X then an Z. I also assumed because of the "cross" stuff that this game operates on in terms of symbolic.

      I'd rather have a "Xillia Perfect Edition" out there with Xillia 1 being the dominant game to "finish up what was left for it" as a title then have like japanese audio availible for it. I do worry that this will never become a thing but I cannot say what will or won't happen with the Tales of series. And if "Arise killed it" which I doubt but one is left to wonder with the uneven state of it what Bamco is planning next for it.

    Hearing you talk about Xillia's presentation makes me wonder why fans complain about Arise look despite it being an objective improvement from the previous entries. Especially Xillia 2 where they copy-pasted most of the environments.

      @@xenosanctum2531 it's a shared thought among veteran tales fan i'd say, many of us feel like Arise is getting a bit too anime generic rather than it's own vibe as in even if up until Berseria they used the same style that they used since Xillia there's this feeling that Arise is leaning too much on the anime aesthetics focusing more on looks and feel than actual substance. Arise is a case of "what you see is what you get" even with all the twists at the end of the day it remains the same

    I remember enjoying my time back when I beat this game but I'd be hard pressed to tell you anything about and even as I watched this review I could barely recall anything at all lol. It's odd but for some reason nothing about it stuck with me. I wonder why that is, I'd give this game a replay if I still had any console that could play it.

    4:17 Depends, if you don't count Tempest as a mainline game then 2006 didn't got any new games either. Same with "2001" because Eternia released in 2000 and Destiny 2 in 2002.

    • @Chelaxim
      @Chelaxim ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well Temptest started out as a mothership title then was retconed into an escort title and after Baba left the franchise they reclassified the franchise again and now there's only original titles and crossover titles. Tales of the Tempest is an original title not a crossover title.
      TLDR well yes but no...but actually yes.

    I get that Xilla was your first one, but I disagree with a lot of your stances on the game as to me it feels like where Namco went on a downward spiral to carve out the soul of the franchise to " Win over the Final Fantasy fans." This seemed like the shortest mainline Tales of game to me aside from Tempest. With the cast...Jude being borderline obsessed with Millia turned me off, Millia was a bit flat for a long time, Alven was ok, but Elize turned me off and Leia felt like Penalo was in FF 12 was, and Rowen was ok but felt not anywhere close as cool as Jade, Kratos and some of the others. Gaius was a worthwhile villain, but everyone else hardly had much time aside from the God General knock offs, and him and Muzét working together hardly even made sense. Eh, the song was ok, still liked Abyss's better I guess. To me we really lost a lot of the charm and post game stuff the series use to be known for, and sadly all this stuff just got worst in Arise.

      While I can somwhat understand where your comming from I personally think your giving too much credit to the Abyss and Symphonia cast and not enough to Xillia's. I might ask how old you were when you played Symphonia and Abyss becuse a lot of the time we remember the stories from our childhood more fondly than our adulthood. I remember loving the Star Wars Prequles until I got older and now acknowlage that while I still like them the dialoge was horrible.

      @@xenosanctum2531 My apologies for some reason I thought you said Xilla was your first. And its true are childhood seems to shape what we like the most since I still like a lot of stuff from the 90's I suppose, though not all of it lol.

    • @Evilriku13
      @Evilriku13 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah the development had faced issues also because of Team Destiny & Team Symphonia not focussing due to each other having different aspects they like to focus in. What was however the main reason I can partway attest to why Xillia 1 "failed" itself was Bamco itself. You see, it wasn't the only "big" game in development in that timeframe. If you track down the development of this game and look up what else Bamco did in the meantime you may wonder if they overdid themselves on large scale projects, and I absolutely believe they did. Not only was Tales of Xillia hit from that but also Soul Calibur V and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and in case you are unaware those titles were also planned as BIG titles for their releases with only TTT2 coming close to achieving it but ultimately failing commercialy which hurt the team in a way that led to Tekken 7 being pushed quite far away in terms of releases. From what I got Soul Calibur V suffered the most as that game was, according to its executive producer, only 25%(!!) completed because staff was being juggled around with other team members of mentioned projects.
      Xillia 1 was lacking around 8-10 hours iirc with Origin as the original final boss being planned and nowadays being "a background character joke" in Xillia 2's presence.

      A group of friends and I had just finished Graces and loved it. We played Xillia and we were pretty neutral about it. Then we got to a timeskip. A major plot death was exposited via subtitle. It all went downhill from there. Lots of bland dungeons and gameplay and a poorly thought out story ("I have decided to become Maxwell" is my top spot for dumbest dialogue in an RPG. )
