RIP Charlie Haden! I know nothing about jazz. But I lived in Montreal and always attended the Jazz Fest. Found my way to these two and fell in love with this album. In my list of great albums, which are littered with Rock and alt-Rock, this one stands out as my anomoly and helps me through the dark days. Thank God! and Thank You Charlie!
Beyond The Missouri Sky is one of the all time classic (and really "timeless") jazz collections in contemporary music. If I had only five I could choose from on the proverbial desert island, this would be in there solid. Thas' right!
This is definitely one of the best duos ever. The connection between Pat and Charlie is symbiotic, and both manage to keep a great sobriety that makes all the genius and serenity of what is being played. Brilliant.
Pat Metheny's exquisite interpretation of the great Henry Mancini tune amicability is moving & even eyes' watering which is cuddled by the most beloved one ..... superb !!
There is no better music for me in the World than Beyond the Missouri Sky. It has given me so much happiness. I missed the concert in Sardinia by 2 daays and I will never recover from it. Unless Pat and Charlie decide that they would like to come to Wales and play in the land of song.
Charlie and Pat did an album together, "Beyond The Missouri Sky" (1997) and this tune is on it. One of my all-time favorite albums.. (And my all-time favorite Mancini Song..)
For those who want the lyrics' s Henry Mancini, even if this marvelous interpretation of Pat Metheny & Charlie Haden, alone, does not require it indeed. Personal love dedication for Lucian: "If you're feeling fancy free Come wander through the world with me And any place we chance to be Will be a rendezvous Two for the road We'll travel through the years Collecting precious memories Selecting souvenirs And living life the way we please In the summertime the sun will shine In winter we will drink summer wine And any day that you are mine Will be a lovely day As long as love still wears a smile I know that we'll be two for the road And that's a long long while"
Happy Birthday 12 VIII 2016 MR PATRICK BRUCE METHENY heartfelt wishing to an even much more healthier long life for you and your family & friends & relatives & colleague-musicians plus anyone in your diverse spheres & circles GOD BLESS YOU PAT x x x x x x x x x x x x merci "klaurent13"
I absolutely loved this film when it came out my favorite Audrey Hepburn/Albert Finney performances and the flash forwards and flashbacks well they were so cool and new to me in films... But If Pat could have done this for the film it would have transported it to a new place indeed. Thanks for posting !!!!!
At first, I was like, 'whoa! Pat, you're rushing the tempo of this beautiful Henry Mancini classic'. But as I allowed myself to settle down, only then did I realize if there's anyone that can rush the tempo and still maintain the originality & melody in a tune, it has to be Pat. 3-Cheers :) Thanks for this great upload. Loved it to the last click :)
Actually I've been using the pick the very same way, ever since I started learning jazz guitar in Rome (Italy) back in 1985. I've been playing anything from fusion, metal, progressive rock, classic rock, to samba, classic, new age, and I still love how much rounder the sound of the strings is, when you position the pick the Metheny way. On top of composing beautiful, amazing music, the man will get credit for his guitar pick position! :-)
Somebody wrote 5 years ago: "Pat never better, Charlie great."... That`s still the case today.... They will never play together again... This is a loss for humanity. I like this recording very very much. I´ll missing them....
Metheny makes it sound great. He gets a clear, warm sound that is perfect the music he's playing. It just has a slightly more noticeable attack than a nylon string without a pick would have.
It's a Linda Mazner. Check out her sight online. Last I heard she had stopped taking orders. She makes all of Pat's guitars except his souped up es 175 which he no longer plays on the road. He's an Ibanez artist.
I didn't notice mention of who makes the cover of this beautiful song possible, Michel Legrand. As with Mancini or Bacharach, his significant volume of works of genius evokes the the best renditions of genius musicians.
Gorgeous as always with these two but soundperson, I also enjoy the “squeech” and finger details what can we roll off just a touch of the top end high frequencies? Or maybe Pat likes that sound?
the thing about Haden that makes him more than you want to hear him as is his choice of notes! while it might seem like he pedals a note for too long or does these simplistic chromatic passages that just go boomp boomp boomp boomp, the harmonic scenarios that he is creating while doing so are staggeringly brilliant. Like hi studied Richard Wagner more than Ray Brown or Milt Hinton.
This is a beautiful song -- Composed by Henry Mancini, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. This was Mancini's second attempt to write the film's theme song. The first attempt was rejected by the film's director (Wow! A Mancini composition being rejected!). Regrettably, I don't care at all for Metheny's rendition. It suffers from what I hear far too often from musicians -- a pathetic attempt to show off, and make themselves more important than the music. In the jazz world I characterize this as a contest to see who can play the most notes in the shortest period of time. Here's an excellent description of the film and music: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_for_the_Road_(film)
Are we talking about the same clip? The harmonic scenario is created exclusivly by Metheney, Haden only makes his straight duty. And, chromatic passages - where ? It's all straight harmonical function.
I guess you've got your reasons for it, but I feel that a pick can sound quite nice on a nylon string guitar. this performance not being an exception. It's funny how different tastes can be. I think Metheny's tone is one of my favourite tones ever!
I'd like to see the charts Charlie is playing from. Notes or chords? Or just I, IV, V, etc. Did they rehearse for this, I wonder? Charlie was able to make some of the most marvelous sounds from wood and strings. I wonder how many basses he owned. He liked to mike his bass rather than use a pickup which I used to do years ago using a Barcus Berry that sounded alright for what I was doing, playing dinner music. You're playing to the angels now, buddy. What a hell of a show that must be.
I doubt they rehearsed this -- at these guys' level, sightreading charts and having it come out perfectly the first time is pretty much par for the course. Fun fact: Jaco sightread "Birdland", pinch harmonics and all.
+vwbug1971 they've played this song in studio before... it's in their album beyond the missouri sky. You don't have to look at the changes to hear them, this song is very melodic.. but I bet he could write them down even though he never read them off paper to begin with. that's jazz
Nos encantaria escuchar tu versión de esta hermosa standard, si tu interpretación es la mitad de lo bonita que la del Metheny, te acepto el comentario. Saludos!!
yeah i suppose in this clip he is doing a little bit of a pedantic job, I wrote my response before listening based on the dozens of C. Haden albums I have listened to over the years. I am surprised that in this setting he is using a chart for one of Mancini's more well known tunes! he is a little more form over style but in general Haden's things is that chromatic pedal/walk.
man u r soooooooooo!!! wrong!!! this kind of music must like you to listen if you want give yours ears to the great bassist Victor Wooten... but don't say that about Charlie Haden he has a GREAT Talent and touch... see you
It's ok to me if you like this bassist, but I don't like the guy at all. Saw him in an interview and his attitude is: O, I'm so important! It's not my taste...

Pat Metheny is a natural phenomenon,
I fell in love with this song because of the movie. Charlie and Pat turned it into a classic.
I can listen to this for days on end.Beautiful, just absolutely beautiful.

Oh, I would like to have this through a high end sound equipment. Just lovely. Top world class!
R.I.P. Charlie Haden....

VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL!
I love this music. Metheny is such a good jazz guitarist. Merci klaurent13!!!
Probably my favorite video on all youtube.
this can not be real,, especially today when we lost charlie haden,, they are way ahead of their music ,
For those who want the lyrics' s Henry Mancini, even if this marvelous interpretation of Pat Metheny & Charlie Haden, alone, does not require it indeed.
Personal love dedication for Lucian:
"If you're feeling fancy free
Come wander through the world with me
And any place we chance to be
Will be a rendezvous
Two for the road
We'll travel through the years
Collecting precious memories
Selecting souvenirs
And living life the way we please
In the summertime the sun will shine
In winter we will drink summer wine
And any day that you are mine
Will be a lovely day
As long as love still wears a smile
I know that we'll be two for the road
And that's a long long while"
Pat never better,Charlie great.
This piece is written by the greatest Henry Mancini. I wish it was mentioned in the description.
(by Henry Mancini)
more clear than that
It’s in the title
My ex was crazy, I wish it was mentioned in the description.
@@filippopuri It was later edited. I'm not blind.

Beautiful tune ... interprété par une merveille de duo ...
They inhabit so comfortably the really rare harmonic structure of this fascinating song by Mancini! Hypnotic!
Por favor, alimenta mi com este estilo. Abraço forte
beautiful. poetic. elegant. love this gorgeous duo.
I absolutely loved this film when it came out my favorite Audrey Hepburn/Albert Finney performances and the flash forwards and flashbacks well they were so cool and new to me in films... Madre, che musica,da brividi, struggente,da pelle d'oca 💙

senza tempo, sempre un sogno
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

What sweetness
Awesome duo, thanks for sharing
This is so mellow......
Beautiful...
i love this song and movie
Wonderful!
This is magic.
Sugar
gorgeous virtuosity.
The wonders of blending piëzo pickups and microphones :)
Also, judging from the headstock it is actually an Alhambra guitar.
Love this tune!
Simplemente impresionante.
Brilliant!
I agree symbiotic is perfect adjective to describe their musical synthesis.
very nice ! ですね.
YES !!!

Absolutamente lindo!
Charlie Haden è uno dei maggiori contrabassisti ancora in circolazione!
Ich schreibe einfach: Herzlichen Dank!
@nycbassist This was Mancini's favorite of the songs he wrote.
I didn't notice mention of who makes the cover of this beautiful song possible, Michel Legrand. As with Mancini or Bacharach, his significant volume of works of genius evokes the the best renditions of genius musicians.
Not sure what you're aiming at, but the tune of course is by Mancini. =)
Mancini mentioned that this composition might be his best song.
So am I (fond of that album, and of your interesting comment ; ) ; ).
"Two for the Road",Waoo!
Gorgeous as always with these two but soundperson, I also enjoy the “squeech” and finger details what can we roll off just a touch of the top end high frequencies? Or maybe Pat likes that sound?
wow!!!!
love this song. sad thing is that it is not popularly recorded. anyone can point me to a vocal version of this song? thanks

Ah,I understand. I don't know so many recordings from C.H.
For this clip I imagine how it would be with Gary Peacock or Orsted Pedersen or so...
@FrancescoGuardi if you don't like this bass player you don't like music, simple as that. Charlie Haden is a very humble man.
Braz152 - the music he plays right before the end is "Oh Susanna"
What kind of candy do I get?
Unbelievable.
Is that a Bbm with a F# and B in the base at the end? It's a handful!
I guess you've got your reasons for it, but I feel that a pick can sound quite nice on a nylon string guitar. this performance not being an exception.

the run at 2:17 was just dead on

Loved the music but by 4:00 I realized that there wasn't even enough time Charlie Haden to take a chorus or two.
i like this guy, looks like he knows what he is doing, sometimes he is a little of tune, but that´s ok, I guess
Why would someone use a pick on a nylon string guitar? It sounds awful.
Leugeuday njiir
i didn't know dwight shrute played stand up bass???
man u r soooooooooo!!! wrong!!! this kind of music must like you to listen if you want give yours ears to the great bassist Victor Wooten... but don't say that about Charlie Haden he has a GREAT Talent and touch...
see you
@FrancescoGuardi never as good:)Charlie Haden is the greatest timekeeper in history of jazz, also the greatest sounding dbplayer.
@doddsalfa Bullshit.There's music I like -beyond Haden.
It's ok to me if you like this bassist, but I don't like the guy at all.
Saw him in an interview and his attitude is: O, I'm so important!
It's not my taste...
Irrepetible "Two on the Road"...
