I had this idea almost 10 years ago. There are many uses for char. I was told by family I was an idiot for even thinking that selling the char would be profitable. Follow your heart, not what others think is the lesson I learned.. thank you for your comment. They weren’t wrong, I was an idiot, not for the idea I had but for listening to them.

My father does something similar with cotton cloth. Put it in a coffee can, 1 hole in lid, throw it in the fire. You get “charcoal cotton” that is great for lighting fires.
Except that he totally wasted all the timber used to cook it. That’s NOT how you make charcoal. Instead you set the fire INSIDE The barrel, and carefully control the airflow. But this guy managed to impress some ignorant people on the internet. Wow!🙄

I love what you did. It showed everything needed to be done. But i want to add emphasis and clarity to why the holes were drilled, and what they are doing. After sealing the Drum retort, and without the holes, the drum becomes a bomb with steam and flammable volitals that off gass and would have built pressure without those holes. After driving off the steam the volitala are vented to the fire below where they contribute heat energy to help drive off any remaining volitals.
Especially if you do metal working! Buy yourself a used machine or one from harbor freight or similar place. Then find you some metal iron and practice. Im sure you can watch videos and go to your local library to read how to learn your Temps and wires using a simple mig welder like has is easy. Just remember safety as you can really hurt or kill yourself.

I assume that the total heat/energy is reduced quite a bit as a result, but it seems that if stored dry, there is no chance of termites or "further" energy loss? i.e. it should store for forever

How many people know that Kingsford was Henry Ford's brother in law? Henry didn't want to hire him( didn't want to fire him) so he got together with Teddy Roosevelt and started the backyard BBQ trend. Early Fords had hardwood frames in the bodies and he got rid of scrap lumber without paying for removal.
He was an executive on the board of FOMOCO n brokered the deal for the land where Henry got the wood from. It was mainly Henry fords doing starting kingsford charcoal and it was initially only sold at ford dealerships!
When in high school during the summer breaks I used to work for a company that produced charcoal in a massive scale. We went through forests worth of wood. We supplied the local smelting plants with it and also packed it for consumer use in bbqs.
you can also capture the gas it creates inside, run it through a pipe that runs through water (like a still) to cool it and the liquid that comes out is biofuel.
@@louisp.3332 to run anything that runs off of diesel fuel. I.e. farm equipment etc. I suppose if you made enough you could build a powerplant to run off of that to produce electricity to charge your Tesla. IDK,get creative.
I built a charcoal basket out of hardware cloth. I dump all my woodstove ashes through it and collect the leftover charcoal all winter and use that for grilling
Edit: so apparently i have heard of hardware cloth, just never heard it referenced as such. Only seen it labled as like chicken wire or coarse mesh. Ive never heard of a hardware cloth, but i just use my concentrate classifiers (think heavy duty sieve but for rocks and dirt of various sizes). They stack together and fit on top of a bucket, so ill stack em with the smallest mesh at the bottom and larger ones at the top. Any charcoal over a quarter inch I'll usually keep for easy lighting, all the lil bits that fall through with the ash just get mixed in and spread around the yard, garden, and a few handfuls in the compost bed. Dont wanna shock the PH in my compost and kill off excessive microbes, but some ash will help break down organics in conjunction with microbes.
We did similar things down in florida after hurricanes, all the timber you could possibly want. Granted oaks and the occasional nut tree was much more preferable for cooking than pine, cypress, or palm. Oak was just far more common as a native and ornamental species, and i lived near tons of developments that had oaks everywhere. Had zero frets offering to clear and haul away their oaky debris. Not to say thats all I would offer to clear away, id just have to seperate it all back at home. Oak gets saved for BBQ, pine and otherwise is bonfire fuel. Cypress however was prized for its lumber if we lost any of those, they're threatened in south Florida due to logging for ship decking in WW2 due to its rot resistance.
@@100GTAGUY remember white oak is used for making whiskey barrels...I’ve heard of prices $150 to $200 per ton for this. Go to internet and research for best $$ some pay for diesel to and from location...
I remember that when I was about 11-12 watched my grandfather make charcoal but ,stacking dry cut branches in a mound the form of a triangle. Covered it with dirt, made a small hole at the top of the mound . Made a small opening at the bottom, made a fire towards the middle ,let it burn, covered it and many hours later charcoal…..
I don't know if you can remember how many hours the stacked wood would stay in the fire. It important to know in order to achieve good result. Kindly oblige.

Wheather you’re making charcloth in Sucrets/mints tin, Or charcoal in a barrel, or other improvised kiln, if you really limit the amount of oxygen coming into the chamber, you get charcoal and can tell when there’s no smoke. You may also have to let it cool down before you open the container, because while it’s still hot, if you let oxygen hit it, it will combust. Hope that helps. :-)

THANK YOU! I knew charcoal was the result of burning vegetation such as wood in an environment with little oxygen but now I get it. There is a lot of stuff I can do with the charcoal and this method would be a great way to leach potassium from wood like Ash so I can make my own Lye. Activated charcoal, potassium graphite and many other fun things containing carbon .
HE NEEDS A WELDER TOO .. WAY TO MUCH WIRE SPEED .WHEN IT GOES TUT TUT TUT TOO MUCH WIRE .GET THE WIRE SPEED GOOD THEN MARK IT ON THE MACHINE . BLACK PEN OR ANYTHING .
You can use a metal coffee can just put a couple holes in it and flip it upside-down. Or am even smaller way would be a dip can with the lid on and cloth inside for starting a fire in a wet climate. Char cloth. Any metal container with a vent placed into a fire will do thus however you would need to split the wood to fit into the container but can do this no matter how large or small as needed.

Personally, I just use a tin With a tiny hole where the hinge goes, Stuffed quite full of cotton fabric; he gets wired firmly shut, And it’s done when there’s no more smoke coming out. Once it’s cooled down, then I can open it up. Lots of wonderful chair cloth for starting fires. Catches a Spark first time, every time. And that’s really all I want is for, because it’s portable and makes things simple. but that’s not the same thing as charcoal. It can be made after a similar fashion and very simply, without an elaborate set up. But the way shown in this video, is a very efficient method.
Bit if your looking at videos like this, you probably are a Diy'er and like to do projects. Invest in a lil welder man from harbor frieght like 150. Stupid easy to use.... save money on every project after

@@AaA-wz8jr ну да. я задумку понял сразу как только со стороны работающий агрегат показали. отверстия в перекладине под бочкой показывают мельком, но такой кадр есть. специально приглядывался. да, бочка должна закрыватся плотно, иначе уголь тлеть внутри от воздуха может начать. И все что из нее выходит , возогнанный деготь - идет по трубе на прогрев самой бочки, и только.(повторяюсь)
How long do you leave the fire going under the barrel to burn those logs all the way through? Also the pipe with all the breather holes drilled into that leads into the Y exiting the barrel…..do those holes just allow the gases/fumes from inside the barrel escape or something? What’s the point of drilling all those holes? Thanks for the video bro.
@@FrankTheTank417 until the flames extinguish exiting the pipe. About 5 hours. It almost perpetually heats itself with the gasses produced. I need to adjust the “jetting” to get a better mixture of fuel to air. Basically needs larger holes. It sounds like a jet when running!
The tutorial would be 180 pages 😅 The people of the amazon call this Biochar to fertilize plants. Ranchers may feed it to sick livestock. Blacksmith may use this to get a fire hot enough with forced air to make a Forge.
if you have dead trees on your field, using them to grow mushrooms would be better. the trees turn to mush afterward enough time growing mushrooms, so you can mix that in your compost.
@@Hohmies86 a years supply of everything! My grain went from 18 to 23 per 50lb bags. But can't really store it, it molds. But hurts us ranchers. Hay is 8 bucks, used to be 4. Hard times. As the saying goes, crime doesn't pay and neither does farming these days

Mine is made from a #100 propane tank. It serves as a charcoal maker and gasifier to run a generator. My grandpa taught me to make them. He still has his first truck that he had during the depression he ran off of wood gas. The wood was free and everywhere. At every stop, he had free wood waiting for him. People paid him to haul it off. He sold the charcoal for a living, and started a delivery business where he also sold the charcoal. It paid for his collage. He would laugh when grandma told the story. That he found a way to make everything pay up. He even created a way to pump the extra gas into a tank for storage. I was lucky to have him for a grandpa. He taught me more than I ever learned in school. And all of it was useful. Can't say the same about collage.

Or hook up some metal pipe to the charcoal barrel and run it into a car’s carburetor or generator’s carburetor and you now have a gasifier and can make electricity by using wood gas as your fuel for your truck or generator!
Gasifier would work nicely on a large farm or city as secondary power source, also helps with water heating. In Africa they just feed more chickens and the poo powers methane electrical plant that lights the city
Lol right after this short i had one by Mike Rowe (from dirty jobs.) He did a great segment on those who make charcoal commercially. This is fantastic for the want to do it myself crowd. Remember our forfathers and mothers didn't have the luxury of running out to the stores when they needed something. There are old ways of doing so many things it's amazing to learn them.
Charcoal this used to be our main money maker back home in ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA 🇦🇬 my dad use to leave the house 5am and come back home 9 to 10 pm Monday to Saturday every Friday and Saturday we the kids would meet him in the woods carrying LOG WOODS for 3 to 4 miles it was the hardest work I have ever done

The fumes being created in the barrel are actually flammable. If you can contain it and make a duct you can run gasoline engines with the fumes. 😊
But it's not a complete burn and will tar up the engine. There's better ways of doing that.

That's what I do. I also use it to restart my wood burner to keep my house warm in the winter. There is no need for paper and kindling.
I live in the south and use bark from river birch trees to light campfires and jet stove for cooking outside.

Oak gets saved for BBQ, pine and otherwise is bonfire fuel.
Cypress however was prized for its lumber if we lost any of those, they're threatened in south Florida due to logging for ship decking in WW2 due to its rot resistance.

I remember that when I was about 11-12 watched my grandfather make charcoal but ,stacking dry cut branches in a mound the form of a triangle. Covered it with dirt, made a small hole at the top of the mound . Made a small opening at the bottom, made a fire towards the middle ,let it burn, covered it and many hours later charcoal…..
I don't know if you can remember how many hours the stacked wood would stay in the fire. It important to know in order to achieve good result. Kindly oblige.

2 to 3 hours. It all depends on the moisture content of the wood

Wheather you’re making charcloth in Sucrets/mints tin, Or charcoal in a barrel, or other improvised kiln, if you really limit the amount of oxygen coming into the chamber, you get charcoal and can tell when there’s no smoke.
You may also have to let it cool down before you open the container, because while it’s still hot, if you let oxygen hit it, it will combust.

They channel the combustible gasses under the drum to help “fire” it throughout the process. Thanks Azim
They help make the barrel not a bomb. Otherwise the gasses from the wood would buildup and be an issue.

I knew charcoal was the result of burning vegetation such as wood in an environment with little oxygen but now I get it. There is a lot of stuff I can do with the charcoal and this method would be a great way to leach potassium from wood like Ash so I can make my own Lye. Activated charcoal, potassium graphite and many other fun things containing carbon .

You can use a metal coffee can just put a couple holes in it and flip it upside-down. Or am even smaller way would be a dip can with the lid on and cloth inside for starting a fire in a wet climate. Char cloth. Any metal container with a vent placed into a fire will do thus however you would need to split the wood to fit into the container but can do this no matter how large or small as needed.

Personally, I just use a tin With a tiny hole where the hinge goes, Stuffed quite full of cotton fabric; he gets wired firmly shut, And it’s done when there’s no more smoke coming out.

Lots of wonderful chair cloth for starting fires. Catches a Spark first time, every time. And that’s really all I want is for, because it’s portable and makes things simple.
but that’s not the same thing as charcoal. It can be made after a similar fashion and very simply, without an elaborate set up. But the way shown in this video, is a very efficient method.
Use black iron plumbing pipe next time and you won't need the welder. That designs been round for 40 years as far as i know.

Тех дров, которые придется сжечь, чтобы получить уголь внутри бочки. Внутри бочки дрова превратяться в уголь.

И все что из нее выходит , возогнанный деготь - идет по трубе на прогрев самой бочки, и только.(повторяюсь)
How long do you leave the fire going under the barrel to burn those logs all the way through? Also the pipe with all the breather holes drilled into that leads into the Y exiting the barrel…..do those holes just allow the gases/fumes from inside the barrel escape or something? @@FrankTheTank417 until the flames extinguish exiting the pipe. About 5 hours. It almost perpetually heats itself with the gasses produced. I need to adjust the “jetting” to get a better mixture of fuel to air. Basically needs larger holes. It sounds like a jet when running!

if you have dead trees on your field, using them to grow mushrooms would be better. the trees turn to mush afterward enough time growing mushrooms, so you can mix that in your compost.
Basically, it's just like in the video. The holes in the uprights are to let the gasses escape, I'm assuming.

Mine is made from a #100 propane tank. It serves as a charcoal maker and gasifier to run a generator.
My grandpa taught me to make them. He still has his first truck that he had during the depression he ran off of wood gas.
The wood was free and everywhere. At every stop, he had free wood waiting for him.
People paid him to haul it off.
He sold the charcoal for a living, and started a delivery business where he also sold the charcoal. It paid for his collage.
He would laugh when grandma told the story. That he found a way to make everything pay up.
He even created a way to pump the extra gas into a tank for storage.
I was lucky to have him for a grandpa. He taught me more than I ever learned in school. And all of it was useful. Can't say the same about collage.

Or hook up some metal pipe to the charcoal barrel and run it into a car’s carburetor or generator’s carburetor and you now have a gasifier and can make electricity by using wood gas as your fuel for your truck or generator!
Gasifier would work nicely on a large farm or city as secondary power source, also helps with water heating. In Africa they just feed more chickens and the poo powers methane electrical plant that lights the city

Charcoal this used to be our main money maker back home in ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA 🇦🇬 my dad use to leave the house 5am and come back home 9 to 10 pm Monday to Saturday every Friday and Saturday we the kids would meet him in the woods carrying LOG WOODS for 3 to 4 miles it was the hardest work I have ever done
