    i made one last week exactly as you described and it works perfectly. I used very green red oak, it's very green but this kiln still gets it done. once i had to do a second burn, so i'v started adding a little more wood for the fire. I use sawdust soaked with kerosene near the bottom air holes in the 55 gal drum and kindling just above the sawdust. that way i can light the fire easily with a hand torch through the hole. Thanks for the video. I recommend this method. do know that it makes a lot of smoke for the 1st hour but it settles down. also i removed the charcoal tank once to see my results while it was still very hot and sparks developed which would hav burnt up all the charcoal so now i wait til it's completely cold in the drum so the charcoal won't combust when it's exposed to air.

      That’s great! I like the sawdust idea. If there’s one weakness I have it is getting enough material around the inner barrel.

    I represent the BbqPitBoys and I’ve done a video using the exact method I found using hardwood skid material cut to length and stack it vertically around the diameter of the 55 gallon barrel will avoid a second cook and start it with dry softwood as you’ve done in your video (6hours cooking time then let cool)
    This Charcoal burns cleaner hotter and no more waiting for the coals to get white hot before you cook!! Great Video Cheers 🍺

    Can I over do it? I have a big pile of garbage and trees that I wanna burn. I’m thinking if it would work to fill a 55gallon with dry birch and cut a small hole for the air to escape and just throw it in the fire. It would be a big fire it might get too hot I don’t know 🤷🏼‍♂️. Your thought

    • @TeachaMantoFish
      @TeachaMantoFish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it can both get to hot and if there is ANY oxygen that can get into it, it will burn instead of char. You can't just pop a hole in it. It has to keep oxygen from getting in.

    Shouldn't you burn the barrels to get the paint off so it doesn't end up in the wood? Or doesn't that matter?

      I was really worried about the pain because the insides of the barrels or free of paint and bare metal. However, there may be a protectant, but I wasn’t too terribly worried about that either. It wouldn’t here to “season” the barrel first with fire.

    This doesn't have anything to do with charcoal but it's a video idea that seems to works. First the reason why, my e-tank uses a Schumacher 1565 wheeled charger that usually cleans quickly. It started to slow and the amperage was falling. I wire brushed the anodes and and still just 9.6 amps. I changed the solution and cleaned the anodes again which fixed the problem. That started me thinking if I could contain the sludge from the pieces while allowing the current to pass through it might keep the tank cleaner longer. The first thing I thought of was a cheap pillowcase so it was off to Walmart. I tried it yesterday with positive results and my amperage has only fallen 0.3 amps. Allow the top of the pillowcase to remain open to vent the hydrogen and oxygen gas. I don't get that foam on top of the solution that I used to get, its all inside the pillowcase. It seems to work like a tea bag, the solution will stain but the sludge stays inside the bag. I sprayed it out with the water hose and it was ready to use again. I'm on my third piece now with no changes. I wanted to tell you about this because you seem to be looking for a better way of doing things as well. If I'm not mistaken this will be a better way. Sorry for the long comment.

    • @TeachaMantoFish
      @TeachaMantoFish  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, that is a good idea. If I can remember it I will add it into my next cycle after cleaning out the solution. Brilliant!

    • @turdferguson5300
      @turdferguson5300 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TeachaMantoFish I've had more time to use it and it's a winner. My amperage has actually increased with the clean anodes, the surface area of the piece has a lot to do with it too. I keep the charger set on 12 volts- 40 amps and it's common to get 19-36 amps. Using a regular size pillowcase fold the top inside out down to the bottom. This leaves a loop of material at the opening, use a pool noodle to form a hoop in between the pieces of material. This will float, helps to slide the piece in, and vents the top of the pillowcase. It sounds like a lot of trouble but once you're finished it should work for a longtime.

      @@TeachaMantoFish dang! Thanks for replying… I couldn’t find this video again…. My property has tons of oak, from saplings to 6ft diameter trunks, I’m in ca foothills and these storms have knocked over a lot of trees for firewood/charcoal and milling(I have my sawmill now and a container full of boards). And I’m working on sources for cedar logs that are a bit higher up the road more in the hills… anyways, I made a couple batches of charcoal already from what I remembered from this video, Imma watch it again and get busy soon as the rain stops in a few more days. I got burn piles ready and waiting, and I got 2 steel barrels waiting for me to turn em into charcoal stoves… after being here for several months now, I’d say 70% of my property is forest, and of that 80%is various California oaks with 20% ponderosa and digger pines. I just bought a brand new splitter, next year Imma be selling firewood too. I got several dead and dry oaks that are down that are probably 2-3 cords each, and a bunch of smaller ones. There is no shortage of trees and wood here lemme tell ya… 50lbs of organic lump charcoal for 25$at the farmers market next year( this is California after all)

    • @TheFrogfeeder
      @TheFrogfeeder 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I’m doing right now, is just using one 55g barrel with a quick release ring, I fill it full of wood chunks which I chop up branches too small for firewood but too big for my chipper, then I put a burn pile right on top the barrel… the barrel lid has a 1.5inch pipe straight up out the lid that’s 2ft high then 90s to 4 feet long and acts as the gas-burner-offer that I can monitor and ignite. But I like this double barrel method because I won’t always have a burn pile to work with, and there are tons of burn restrictions here because it’s California and the entire place is a tinder box usually… next couple weeks is prime charcoal season for me and I’m ready.

    Back in 1978 I was returning from a state lake fishing trip, and as I casually drove up the rural county road I saw smoke coming out of this barn. Every crack of this big hay barn was bellowing out gray smoke. I panicked, squealed to a stop, ran toward the barn screaming for help~! I flung the barn doors open, and behind me I heard this angry voice yell out, "What the hell do you think you're doing~?!!..." I screamed out, "This barn is on fire~!!" The 60 plus year ole man holding a double barrel shotgun, growled, "Naw dumbass... I'm making charcoal... Shut that goddamned barn door~!!..." As I closed the barn door I noticed a high mound of clay dirt piled up in the center of the barn... Smoke was escaping from cracks in the clay dirt... And I felt like a damned fool... But I was raised on a cattle farm and over the years of my youth I watched at least two different barns burn to the ground from lightning strikes... Later me and the ole man sat and talked about making charcoal while drinking homemade moonshine... I was more interested in how he made moonshine, and kept trying to redirect the conversation in that direction... Well... I'm just weird that way...

    What I don't like with this setup: The inner drum is not fired from the bottom. Only from the top and the sides. That's bad for internal convection of heat.
    If you have a small firebox underneath you can get away with much less wood to heat it, you can put some more wood in if you think you are not done yet.

    I think charcoal for cooking is counter-intuitive; all that heat wasted. You can do your BBQ just as well with a stick burning barbecue.

      There's grilling with charcoal and then there's smoking meat in an indirect fired cooker and using splits or pellets or even charcoal... just depends on what type of cooker you have. Seems like the video was focused on the grilling part.

    If you invert the middle and outside you will get much better coverage of heat, but you will have to wrap it in insulation.
