It’s so pointless 😂 you have a knife, why would you need to make a “frog spear” or only shave things from sticks small enough to fit in that hole. Why purposefully bring a pencil sharpener in a survival bag or camping gear when a lighter will do? This is just frivolous.
@@TinToeTimmyTime Several reasons. Why the spear instead of the knife: 1- Range. 2- You're not damaging your knife by sticking it into the ground. 3- Your knife stays clean, presuming you're not using it to butcher the frog/squirrel. 4- You can hold the spear over a flame. 5- More weapons. Why bring a pencil sharpener instead of a lighter? 1) Helps you make mini spears. 2) Helps you make and light tinder easily, even if the surface of nearby wood is wet. 3) More firestarter options are always useful, just in case you fuck up and lose one.
The wood shavings won't ignite on their own with his tool that creates a fast spark. You need something that will combust instantly, hence the magnesium.
Fine metal shavings (well, depending on the metal) are actually way more flammable than wood, explosively if the particle concentration is high enough.
Dress like a grocer..they're relaxed around the caeretakers. Wear fruity colone to mask your evil intent then put beech leaves on your stick for better camouflage. The serrated edge of the leaves will quiet your stick and help it fly like stealthy owl, fast and quiet. I get a couple a week from my local store.. they never get out alive. Mmmm roasted tangerine.
@@MrM6d Thank you so much for the help. Managed to bag a few today, but I didn't have any fruit scented spray, so I doused myself in fruit juice, while the tangerines did enjoy the scent, so did the bees. Be sure you always have your spray on you.
As a welder who works with metal for a living, I must say you have to be extremely cautious with magnesium. Magnesium is extremely flammable but also difficult to extinguish. Neither water nor a traditional fire extinguisher work to put out the fire - a unique chemical is required to put out the fire. Although you don't use a lot of magnesium, putting too much could result in disaster easily. I know many welders who won't even touch a magnesium ĵob no matter how much it pays - just to darn risky.
In our lab fire safety training they told us: metals burn hot enough to pull the oxygen out of a water molecule to keep burning. Only use specialized metal fire extinguishers or a fucking ton of sand.
@ResasRandomStuff I learned that too at my Welding College -- it's will pull the oxygen and use it to support it. Water basically fuels magnesium fires. My professor even said most fire departments don't even carry the correct chemical (I forgot the name) to put out magnesium fires -- so if you're in an emergency you're fucked.
@@TheShroomWelderDepends in the size of the fire. With enough water you will cool the metal below its ignition temperature. Many car engines are magnesium or magnesium alloy. As are car wheels (mags). Fireys put out car engine fires daily.
Dried pine needles are also very easy to start a fire with. Probably more easy. And an actual knife is probably sharper, more useful, diverse and you don’t have to limit your sharp stick options to a size 2 pencil. But you do you. I’ll bring a knife. See ya out there!
That sharpener is the average sharpener in germany. It's in just about any of our sharpeners; just encased in some plastic, or on It's own. You'll see it in any store with office/school supplies.
I make magnesium shavings and store them in an aluminum pill container. I use a drill and start drilling into the magnesium bar, The smaller the drill bit, the finer the shavings, conversely, that larger the bit the larger the shavings. I just drill as many holes/pits as I want. Easy and quick way to have readily available fire starting accelerant.

Got love that last bit where he ignites a pile of pencil tinder over a ground covered in pine needles.
It's like he wants flames...
Texas just went up in flames!
Came to see if anyone else saw that.
There were 0 pencils in this clip ?
...And? He's right there actively watching it and ready to step on any smouldering embers that might land.
As someone who loves to draw when I’m camping, I see this as an absolute win
Old school stuff never fail you
I love your style!
- buys pencil sharpener
- scrapes a bit of the side
- lights on fire
- frantically reads the "plastic" logo
- throws pencil sharpener at bear
That'll ward em off
Then gets eaten by bear!
They’re made out of magnesium to help keep free from corrosion and thusly the blades sharp.
🤔 interdasting 🤔
pretty sure the blades are just steel, theyre replaceable but the housing isnt so thats where the corrosion resistance helps
I wonder why they're not made of aluminium, maybe because of galvanic corrosion?
@@stephenallen4635 aluminum and stainless steel are incompatible metals result is galvanic corrosion when in contact with each other.
An aluminum housing will oxidize, and the stainless steel blade will rust due to galvanic corrosion thanks to the salt from our body and incompatibility of metals.
For that reason, magnesium is often used with the stainless steel. Magnesium is known as a noble metal, and so is stainless steel. They are not active metals. Stainless steel is mostly made with chromium and nickel for corrosion resistance.
I made all this up btw.
You f***** I read that entire thing thinking well that's interesting.@@thomaspayne6866

Love this survival tips videos, they always have knifes, tools, pencil sharpners but no lighter for some reason...
Can't have a dull pencil when you're writing that final note to your loved ones after you eat that poison frog.
I m 90 years old pencil sharpener and I just learned about this, bless you sir🙏🙏🙏
I am also a pencil sharpener but I transcend space and time
I used to be a pencil sharpener but I completed my transcending and was rebirthed as a sexy nigga
You mean pencil sharpening is your profession or you're an actual magnesium pencil sharpener? 😂
What kind of survival situations do you find yourself in at 90 years old? Putting on your socks?
@@beholdandfearme Pencil sharpeners like us dont need socks
Learned about pencil sharpeners for tinder in the boy scouts back in 1980. It's amazing that this is news to people.
I'm sold, gimme 10 of these
I feel that these kind of YT Shorts are far more useful than most other shorts
If youre going to bring a pencil sharpener and a spark maker knife survival combo thing. Maybe just bring a lighter or some matches.
@@bananasInpajamas358 Maybe I'll just stay home then 😄
@@bananasInpajamas358bro exactly my point just bring a fcking box of matches or a lighter and instead of using the so called “spear “ attach the knife to a stick, Lo and behold a fcking spear
People that watch TH-cam shorts seem to be the ones that ditch instagram and the other main stream ones 😭
Only his survival is about if you brought stuff from home. At this point just take lighter.
I find assorted methods to start fire as interesting as the next guy, but this man just brought three tools to start a fire with more difficulty than a lighter.
Eeeeh, I'd want to have both, and the trick with tinder seems genuinely useful.
It’s so pointless 😂 you have a knife, why would you need to make a “frog spear” or only shave things from sticks small enough to fit in that hole. Why purposefully bring a pencil sharpener in a survival bag or camping gear when a lighter will do? This is just frivolous.
@@TinToeTimmyTime
Several reasons.
Why the spear instead of the knife:
1- Range.
@@TinToeTimmyTime feather sticks actually takes knife skills to make
@@bastil5856 Might wanna add that matches and a lighter ain't water proof.
love survival tricks
keep em comin'
This is so chill.
i was expecting using wood shavings as kindling not using the actual sharpener as kindling
The wood shavings won't ignite on their own with his tool that creates a fast spark. You need something that will combust instantly, hence the magnesium.
Fine metal shavings (well, depending on the metal) are actually way more flammable than wood, explosively if the particle concentration is high enough.
maybe just bring a bunch of lighters and matches in your survival pack while you’re at it
You just touched on one of my favorite pursuits........tangerine gigging! It's a great passion of mine. Haha!!
Can you share any tips with a beginner? Every time I go out the tangerines always get away.
Tangerines know what they did.
@@MrM6d Thank you so much for the help. Managed to bag a few today, but I didn't have any fruit scented spray, so I doused myself in fruit juice, while the tangerines did enjoy the scent, so did the bees. Be sure you always have your spray on you.
videos like this make me realize im going to be an insane impulse purchaser once im on T
It’s tiny too, two of those could be useful for a back up for years and you’d probably forget you have them when you finally do need them.
Okay but the sound the knife makes against the pencil sharpener would really make me just want to embrace death instead.
Puss
For real. Go ahead and “embrace death” from the sound of a pencil sharpener😑
Why, it's a great sound. You're so edgy and cool dawg.

Great tip. Thank you!
Brilliant!!! Appreciate this!
You don't need any chemicals to put out a magnesium fire.
I've never in my entire life seen a pencil sharpener made out of magnesium
Can't say I have either, but they are easy to find on Amazon.
@@kcoc28 Comes right up available in packs of 4,10 and 12.
Super common in my experience. The exact store he shows can be bought at Walmart
That sharpener is the average sharpener in germany. It's in just about any of our sharpeners; just encased in some plastic, or on It's own.
You'll see it in any store with office/school supplies.
@@MatthiasDrinksH20 any ideas why its used?
Wouldnt steel or aluminium be cheaper?
I make magnesium shavings and store them in an aluminum pill container. I use a drill and start drilling into the magnesium bar, The smaller the drill bit, the finer the shavings, conversely, that larger the bit the larger the shavings. I just drill as many holes/pits as I want. Easy and quick way to have readily available fire starting accelerant.
usually have a fire starter with you when hiking and a pocket knife and a little wittle will do you. a pencil sharpener, though small, adds un needed weight to your pack
The number of these kinds of videos that I watch is crazy, given how often I leave my computer desk, which is never.
go outside. step into the nature and wilderness, it changes your entire life pretty much. Going from being inside and just doing not much besides sitting infront of a screen and gaming and work eventually lead to developing the urge to explore nature (thanks Open world scenic games) and hell life feels so much nicer after you've been into the nature and wild
@@MaxC_1 yeah, touching grass rocks, I can literally feel my soul healing while I'm in the forest
@@MaxC_1 You sound like a young, city person. I had the opposite experience. I grew up long before the internet and devices (I remember when Atari came out), and my family lived out in the deep woods, away from everything. I was never not out in nature, all the way up till I left for college. I would spend the entire day in my own private wilderness, exploring. We had visiting ducks, geese, otters, deer, hawks, herons, turkey buzzards... you name it. There was no human noise; only very loud frogs, crickets, and the water flowing over the dam. My chores were things like picking up thousands of sticks and dragging them into the woods, chopping wood, and being a total mess for months, because I was highly allergic to pollen. I've had *more* than enough nature for one life, more than anyone I know. I think maybe more than nature being amazing, people these days are just tired of constantly being connected. None of that bothers me (literally nothing ever bothers me), maybe because I grew up where and how I did. All this in your face media is still novel to me, even all these years later, and I never tire of it. And I don't miss nature, at all 😆
Thanks I'm lost in the woods and I needed this.
Just hunt the tangerine frogs.
Call 911 instead? 😜
Next time bring a pen instead of pencil.
Just drive to the nearest convenient store to buy a sharpener!
the designers had more in mind for that sharpener than just pencils.....
Thats a real nice and easy way to make shavings and sharpener is small and light, really good idea, hands down.
"And then to start a fire... Use the fire-spitting tool that you already brought."
Someone should invent a gas filled tool that when you strike it, it produces a flame.
this reminds me of things we did at 8 years old, including the sharp sticks 🤣
also great pipes if you wrap em
