  • Hattah-Kulkyne has some pretty amazing birds! Our Mallee road trip took us on a birding extravaganza on this one day to see such rare birds in Victoria such as the Black Honeyeater which has made an appearance for a short time visiting from inland Australia.
For more information about the Black Honeyeater:

We saw some beautiful birds & reptiles again on this trip such as the Mulga Parrot, Shingleback Lizard and the White-browed Woodswallows which was great to see.
But.... our most amazing experience on this Hattah trip was spotting a magnificent and almost ghostlike Malleefowl that appeared & disappeared without warning. Malleefowl are silent ground dwelling birds with really big feet! They are in the family of Megapodiidae (Magapodes) which means BIG FEET. They use these big feet to dig gravelly & sandy mounds to incubate their eggs and they are the only megapode that is adapted to live in semi-arid environments. It was a truly special moment to see this amazing bird!! (apologies for the wobbly footage though... we had to take video hand held as we would have missed the moment trying to get our tripods up). Also, if you're wondering if this Malleefowl was a female or a male... we don't know either!! (both sexes look the same)

Anyway, we hope you enjoy this second instalment of our Mallee road trip (well... third if you count the Orange Chat!!).
Thanks for watching our Mallee Road Trip series!! Next stop..... Wyperfeld

For sure!! 😀 It might be a bit of a drive... but it's really not that far away to find remote & amazing wildlife & landscapes. It's quite a wonderful area!! ~ Karen

Well... what a treat! Or rather: so *many* treats! That Black Honeyeater looks more like a Sunbird, that's for sure 🙂And the almost heartbreakingly cuteness of the bare ear of the Malleefowl, looking so vulnerable 😍Also: the heartwarming return of the Apostlebirds 🥰I love this Mallee adventure of yours!

Thank you so much!! 😀 We did quite well on this trip to Hattah!! The Apostlebirds are kind of a guarantee which is always great as I love them!! The Black Honeyeater was fabulous for Tom & Nimal as they had that on their list to see (I missed it 🙃). And the Malleefowl was such a bonus!! We'd just got in the car to go & Nimal said.... "what's that?!" and there it was!!! And it just wandered out of the bush and casually roamed across the path. Amazing!! It was the first time I'd ever seen one so how great to get such a good view!! ~ Karen

Gorgeous Black Honey Eater. That Central Bearded Dragon was cute. Shinglebacks, more birds and you have captured them so well. Loving the landscape and how inquisitive are those Apostle birds. ....Awesome you saw a Mallee Fowl. Well done guys. 🙏🏼👍🏼🤠

I'm planning on flying to Mildura one day, hiring a car and driving to Hattah, maybe also Mungo NP in NSW. Can't be bothered with that long drive from Melbourne. @@naturephotographychallenge

@@craig9563 we did that one weekend! 😅 We flew to Mildura, rented a car & drove to Woolworths carpark just to see a Little Raven! It was a really fun trip! Hattah is probably an hour away from Mildura I think.... but yeah... good idea!
