Ah yes, Cowboy bebop. I'm propably not as madly in love with it as you guys are. I wouldn't be able to dedicate a nearly 4 hour retrospective to it (Or I might, I dunno), but it is without a doubt one of, if not the best anime I've seen. The show in itself was like an urban legend to me for the longest time. I constantly heard from all corners of the internet how phenomenal this show was & how the localization on this thing was the stuff of legends & all that kind of "all love, no hate" talk, but I just never bothered to watch it. I was almost gonna in 2010, but that was when video gaming took over as my life. This is a show I just watched like a week ago. It was one of the 4 anime I watched that week: Jojo's bizarre adventure up to this point, Tengen toppa Gurren Lagann, Trigun (which I finished yesterday) and Cowboy bebop. All of those shows ranged from good to fantastic, but bebop was something I think I need to watch twice, just because I loved it so much. What really works for that show & are the primordial basis' of what made it so fantastic are the pacing & characters. I really enjoyed how the show was generally layed out. In something like Trigun, I got really annoyed towards the end for how brooding & joyless it became, because it was just throwing tragedy after tragedy & rarely ever bothered to throw the audiance a bone. In Bebop, between the heavier episodes were often a couple episodes where things got generally more light & goofy. After Ballad of Fallen angels & Sympathy for the devil got really intense & sad, my mind got to relax a bit with Heavy metal queen before again going a bit darker with Waltz for Venus & after that Jammin' with Edward cheered me up again for another emotional beating. This continues throughout & only towards the end does stuff get more consistantly serious (appropriately so). Having these episodes where the characters get a bit more fun & goofy makes the sad & intense parts hit just that much harder. This is of course accompanied by the characters. I love them all. I can't say I really hated anybody in the show. Especially the 4 leads of the show. There is a saying that a great writer can make a story about a walk in the park seem interesting & this applies here. The reason why filler is so digestable here is because I just don't care if nothing is going on. I just wanna see Spike or Jet or whoever do a thing. Anything will do because they're just that damn likable. Hell, even when things get serious, it never feels overwhelming, because these characters & scipts are able to squeeze joy out of anywhere imaginable. Nobody is stuck just doing nothing but moaping & crying all day like what happened in Trigun (btw: Sorry for using Trigun as a bit of a whipping bitch in these comparisons. I loved that show, but damn is it a stick in the mud by the end), there's always still something to smile at, no matter how small. It also helps in making things even more tragic in the last episode, as in this serious particular moment when Spike visits the gang before heading to fight Vicious, he's still cracking a joke & having fun with Jet. That wrenched my heart something feirce The broken up narrative also helps in character spesific story arcs. Developement seems more steady through the whole thing & I never get tiered of seeing one story arc because between that is good filler & story arcs for the other characters. There's alot to digest in this series for 26 episodes & if it was all just thrown at my face in concentrated story arcs that focused spesificly on one thing, it could have turned stale very easily. And that soundtrack man.... *OooOoOOooOH* boy! I'm speechless over it. It is just so damn pleasant to my ears. It's not something I'd listen to when I wanna make a consentrated effort to listen to something, but as background music to anything, it is second to none. Actually, come to think of it, scratch that 1st statement! I am just as madly in love with this show as you guys are! There is just this sort of pleasant aura around it that instantly gets my nerdness to maximum. I just can't contain myself. I even liked Ein! The fucking dog that never said a word & barely had any story to tell was a likable character. That's just how incredible this show is!!
I bought the series, watched it all, not to mention I'm 17 at the writing of this comment, in less than 6 days, and I absolutely LOVE this show, this is right up there with Dragon Ball Z as one of my favorite animes of all time. (4 years later, FLCL, FMA: Brotherhood, and NGE are among my favorites)
1:35:44 Oh yeah...! :) "You think I'm Vicious?! You don't know what vicious is!!" The first Cowboy Bebop episode I watched was Mushroom Samba one late night on Toonami back in 2001 I think. Around 5 years later, I watched more episode on Anime Central and enjoyed them; I've yet to watch all of them though. Thanks for the retrospective Ryan and Johnny; it was a sweet one. :-)
I remember watching Cowboy Bebop when I was six. My parents would stay up with me and watch shows together. One night they fell asleep and I changed the channel to Cartoon Network to see if any cartoons were on. I thought so because I was six. This was on and I couldn't stop watching.
I had a similar lucky experience with the cable runnings, this past summer I had stayed up rewatching the series on adult swim, the very last saturday of my summer break, The Real Folk Blues part 1 & 2 came on. Perfect ending to the summer
i havent seen cowboy bebop in ages, yet as the video went on, i was able to remember every episode you guys talked about. this anime was amazing. happy b-day ryan
I just want to say thank you guys for this retrospective you guys have showed me how much I love this show and when I have the chance I'm going to buy it but for now Toonami will do :D
Yes yes yes yes yes yes YES! I've been waiting for this for a loooooooooong time! I can't think of a better way to celebrate a birthday. Happy Birthday Ryan.
Since this came out I have watched this now at least 8 times... this is a damn good retrospective, With Ryan and Johnny serving up a sweet run down of the show and movie, and my good the music just fits so well while they speak... I am actually going to finally buy the soundtrack and series because of this entire retrospective.. It's fucking awesome and... I just love it. Hope other retrospectives in the future are made like this one...
I love this anime so much one of my personal favorites every time I get a chance I stay up till after 3:00 to see it on Toonami which I'm glad they still air it on it.
This has been one of the most beastly retrospectives ever, but i enjoyed the hell out of it. Cowboy Bebop is one of my favourite anime ever and adore it! The stories, characters, animation and soundtrack is superb! I also LOVE the film the animation and soundtrack alone makes it worth watching. I think I'm gonna have to get my boxset out again and watch it all on DVD once more. :)
HBD Ryan. Unfortunately I can't listen to this now but I can't wait to hear what BSC has to say, I love Cowboy Bebop it's been a while since I've seen so it'll be a nice memory trip
As the president of my high school's anime club, I have to say Johnny's bit at the end was absolutely hilarious XD I'm definitely adding this to my must watch list, and I'm probably going to show the first episode to the club next time we meet :D
Would it be possible to have the track list of all the songs played during the podcast in the video description? I especially would like to know what the song being played at 2:10:17 is called?
A few things to nitpick here. A. The bounty in session 1 is named Asimov. B. Faye reacts to Viscious that way either because of his physical similarity to Spike or because she's heard of him. C. The initial bounty in Sympathy For The Devil is named Giraffe, Zebra is the guy in the wheelchair. D. It's decades, not centuries that Faye and Jet look back through news papers on, 30 years specifically.
Fantastic series. My fave anime alongside the FMAs and Trigun. Although, Like John, I admittedly haven't watched a ton of animes. Happy Birthday, Ryan!
Funny, Mushroom Samba was the first episode I saw, as well late one night. I hadn't caught what the show was called, however, so I kind of forgot about it. Later, I saw an AMV of Cowboy Bebop to a Foo Fighter song and I was like "I need to see where that fist fight scene comes from" and I was led to Knocking on Heaven's Door. I actually LOVE that movie, and when I decided to check out the series itself, I loved it all. My favorite anime ever!
Spike, Jet, Ed, Fey and Ein. Spike: You know there are three things I can't stand. Jet: Oh whats that? Spike: Kids, pets and women with bossy attitudes. Jet: So? Spike: So how is it that we wind up with all three on our ship?
Ah, the memories...I gotta re-watch it now. I last watched it as a kid and a LOT of it went over my head. I think it'd be interesting to find out what I'd make of it now.
Blame Amanda and Ted for cutting it short, due to their lack of knowledge on the series. Would have been longer. Another reason is because Cowboy Bebop is a lot deeper than Dragonball.
I will only buy things I like- if I like it I will buy it later. I don't like investing in things I may not like. It has been high recommendation from you guys, so it definitely will be watched.
According to the description, this video was recorded on Ryan's birthday, yet the top comments aren't not only the same exact thing but neither one of them is "Happy birthday Ryan." Come on guys show some support. Anyway happy birthday Ryan even though it's probably a little late.
Rocko's sister didn't need the plant to have her eyes treated, Rocko wanted to sell the seeds and the plant to pay for her operation, which they didn't have the money for (and he assumed that he wouldn't be able to get that much money legally)
Ton Pooh did have a song play in his backstory, I heard it was based off Running man from pink floyd I believe the actual name of the title is called On the run. It is my favorite song of the series.
Vicious didn't find out that Spike wanted to leave through Julia. She didn't tell him. He found out and tried to force Julia to kill Spike or they would both be killed. That's why she went into hiding, to protect Spike.
Julia was not a one-night stand. She was the love of Spike's life. And it's not that she had the "hots" for both Spike and Vicious. She was Vicious's girlfriend but fell in love with Spike. Given that Vicious put a gun to her head and mocked her for thinking she could leave, she wasn't exactly free to break up with the dude.
First time I watched Cowboy Bebop, was oddly enough when I was around 7 years old, and the first episode I caught, just like Ryan was the first episode, I was young at the time so I thought it was pretty cool, though in the back of my mind I knew I wouldn't be able to follow the entire thing due to my mom not letting me go to be late for the most part. So I caught up around the time I was 13 or so, or whenever they kept showing constant reruns of it, I know I would always enjoy whenever it and-
Spike's mood wasn't lifted after Julia died. That's the mask he wears. When he leaves he is obviously in a dark place. Spike wants to die because Julia was his reason for living and she's dead. Listen to the tiger-striped cat story again. He even tells Vicious "Julia is dead. Let's end it all."
So I guess I would propably like Brotherhood. I can tolerate having to sit through a sloppy start if there is a payoff to the end. If I know that an otherwise great show has a shit ending, I usually don't bother, because I don't like getting my hopes up for something that'll just dissapoint me in the end, making the adventure kinda meaningless. And then there are shows like Trigun, which fluctuate in a manner that I don't even know what to think of the show in the grand scheme of things.
***** Ah, well that's something I can deal with. I mean hell, Cowboy bebop's ending is quite grim. As long as the show isn't *too* joyless to the point that any kind of catharsis in the end becomes diminished by me not caring as much anymore, (Triiiguuuun! * Violently shakes fist*), it's completely digestable to me. PS: I emphesize. I still liked Trigun. The second half was just not really my thing.
AlluMan96 I see why you would think that, my statement was pretty vague. When i say bad ending, i mean that towards the end of the series the story becomes a bit incoherent with some asspulls here and there. Other than that, the ending was less grim than Bebop's ending. I actually do prefer the original by a tad because of the better pacing and less overuse of chibi moments. The point is that they're both great with their ups and downs. I highly recommend you watch the original first. *If you watch brotherhood first, you'll probably have a hard time with the original's slower pacing*. The original completely branches off from the manga at around episode 23, which is brotherhood's episode 13 or 14.
Big O would come on after the big anime blocks, I believe this was also when Bleach, Code Geass, and Death Note were all running, though I always loved staying later for Big O and Cowboy Bebop, both having the awesome Steve Blum in it, and ever since then which was around middle school I was hooked and I watch it whenever I can.
Just finished the last episode. Wow, talk about an ending! I can see why people love this show, and I officially became a fan myself. In retrospect, I wish I watched this show back in 2001. Speaking of which, there was a point where I was rather bias toward anime. Meaning, I would complain that the animation was choppy. Frankly, it is at times; however nowadays, I don't care if it is choppy. Because to me, that's what makes anime so charming. The substance behind a show is what makes it good.
Anyone notice anything familiar about Vicious? White Hair, Soulless personality, dark clothing, episode he apppears in mentions 'fallen angels' in the title, and he prefers to use longswords? Sephiroth's twin brother anyone?
Just finished watching this yesterday, goddamn this anime is fantastic! Probably my favorite anime now that I've watched it, unless One Punch Man S2 really packs the punches.
Another anime retrospective...Something just as meaningful, perhaps? Because, if that's the case, I'd like to recommend Outlaw Star above all else. It has a similar setting to Bebop, with an entirely different...I guess the word is "focus." It's also about as long, so you won't have to drag yourselves through hundreds of episodes to fully watch it. I think you guys might enjoy it for what it is, and would make an interesting retrospective.
Happy birthday dear Ryan lol I really need to finish watching Cowboy Bebop, it's definitely one of the best animes ever It'd be cool if you guys could do something for Neon Genesis if you like it, that's my favorite
I'm about halfway through this video, and I hear "nothing happens," "completely out of nowhere" a lot. They may mention this later in the dialogue, but the show is anime for Jazz and, as such, there are a lot of episodic asides that completely change narrative/storytelling style and seems random. But that's Jazz, and (IMHO) the show is Jazz for space cowboys/sci-fi. The show is Spike, Jet, Ein, Faye, and Edward doing Blade Runner, Alien, AI, Transhumanism, tropes.exe over some awesome Jazz tracks. I'd personally like to see the story's overall arc and plot/char progression laid out in some kind of visualizable format, maybe w/ screenwriting credits, that'd be dope. Did Watanabe write it all himself? Or in Jazz fashion, have guest writers come in and introduce their own chaos?
Ah yes, Cowboy bebop. I'm propably not as madly in love with it as you guys are. I wouldn't be able to dedicate a nearly 4 hour retrospective to it (Or I might, I dunno), but it is without a doubt one of, if not the best anime I've seen.

i never grew up with the show and i'm only 16, just watched the show, god damn it aged well.
I don't really feel that it aged at all! Everything is, to this day, of shining quality!
I bought the series, watched it all, not to mention I'm 17 at the writing of this comment, in less than 6 days, and I absolutely LOVE this show, this is right up there with Dragon Ball Z as one of my favorite animes of all time.

Thanks for the retrospective Ryan and Johnny; it was a sweet one. :-)
I'm surprised I stumbled upon a three-hour retrospective of Cowboy Bebop with SomeCallMeJohnny from 2013, but I'm not complaining.
I remember watching Cowboy Bebop when I was six. My parents would stay up with me and watch shows together. One night they fell asleep and I changed the channel to Cartoon Network to see if any cartoons were on. I thought so because I was six. This was on and I couldn't stop watching.
Great, fucking damn great retrospective!
Love the in depth analysis and opinions on the series thank you for making my day better.
This forced me to go back and rewatch the series for the first time in a looooong time...never owned it on DVD, so...
Thanks, guys!
As I'm listening to this, I'm just picturing Ryan as Spike and John as Jet.
They have the hair for it
Of course, I'm picturing Lewis as Faye. Which means Ted is either Ed or Ein. ._.
Ted is Ein, Amanda is Ed.
I wanted to jump in this conversation! Lol i re-watch this series once a year
I had a similar lucky experience with the cable runnings, this past summer I had stayed up rewatching the series on adult swim, the very last saturday of my summer break, The Real Folk Blues part 1 & 2 came on. Perfect ending to the summer

Its only 25 bucks at walmart, that's where i got my copy of the series.
The three things spike hates are animals, kids, and women with attitude
I love this anime so much one of my personal favorites every time I get a chance I stay up till after 3:00 to see it on Toonami which I'm glad they still air it on it.
THANK YOU. I'VE WAITED SO LONG.
I was introduced through the 5th episode, "Ballad of Fallen Angels". It is, in my opinion, the best of the best of the series.
Fullmetal Alchemist Retrospective covering the '03 series and Brotherhood. Do It!!
The nostalgia is real with this series. =w=
Thank you BSC, for introducing me to one of the best animes I've ever watched.
HBD Ryan. Unfortunately I can't listen to this now but I can't wait to hear what BSC has to say, I love Cowboy Bebop it's been a while since I've seen so it'll be a nice memory trip
I love Cowboy Bebop, it has the music, the action, the comedy, all you need for a great series.
As the president of my high school's anime club, I have to say Johnny's bit at the end was absolutely hilarious XD I'm definitely adding this to my must watch list, and I'm probably going to show the first episode to the club next time we meet :D

FOUR HOURS!?
*Takes a seat*
Sheesh, long retrospective...
I admit, this is one of my favorite animes.
I stayed up at night just to watch this series all the time.
Years later and it’s still great to listen to.
Cowboy Bebop: Talking about every single episode
Dragonball Z: Talking about each story arc
I'm not big on jazz but I still think that this is one of the most fitting/best soundtracks to any anime or show
Fantastic series. My fave anime alongside the FMAs and Trigun. Although, Like John, I admittedly haven't watched a ton of animes.
Happy Birthday, Ryan!
Does anybody know what song is playing at 2:25:46?Sorry I know that I asked that question about another song earlier in the video.
Funny, Mushroom Samba was the first episode I saw, as well late one night. I hadn't caught what the show was called, however, so I kind of forgot about it. Jupiter Jazz pt 1&2 are favorite Cowboy Bebop episodes
Happy birthday Ryan, and awesome we have really close birthdays.
I put off watching this retrospective until I watched the whole series and the movie. Now that I have, let the games begin...
Ah, the memories...I gotta re-watch it now. I last watched it as a kid and a LOT of it went over my head. I think it'd be interesting to find out what I'd make of it now.

Bryan what did you think?
I will only buy things I like- if I like it I will buy it later. I don't like investing in things I may not like. It has been high recommendation from you guys, so it definitely will be watched.
According to the description, this video was recorded on Ryan's birthday, yet the top comments aren't not only the same exact thing but neither one of them is "Happy birthday Ryan." Come on guys show some support.
Anyway happy birthday Ryan even though it's probably a little late.
Out of curiosity did this show inspire the name of BSC? Seeing as there is the episode called “Brain Scratch”?
yes
Rocko's sister didn't need the plant to have her eyes treated, Rocko wanted to sell the seeds and the plant to pay for her operation, which they didn't have the money for (and he assumed that he wouldn't be able to get that much money legally)
Two men vaguely remember the plot of Bebop.
Happy birthday Ryan!! You guys rock!
What track is playing at 46:38?
Ton Pooh did have a song play in his backstory, I heard it was based off Running man from pink floyd I believe the actual name of the title is called On the run.
It is my favorite song of the series.
Best opening to anything ever in history
Vicious didn't find out that Spike wanted to leave through Julia. She didn't tell him. He found out and tried to force Julia to kill Spike or they would both be killed. That's why she went into hiding, to protect Spike.
Happy Birthday Ryan, hey John will u make the retrospectives audio download so can we hear it anytime when we want?
My favorite show... EVER!!!

i'll defenetly give it a watch when i have the time
Oh also, you guys are going to meet Steve Blum at Momo-con? He's a really nice guy, hope it goes well for you guys when trying to meet him.
Fma: Great beginning, bad ending
Brotherhood: Bad beginning, great ending
Cowboy bebop: awesome beginning, awesome ending :D

47:44 All I could think of was Roy Brisby from the Venture Bros.
I find myself back here every year
My favorite retrospective
Loved that intro
If you ever get to doing a FMA retrospective, will you cover both the 2003 anime and
Brotherhood?
Best. Intro. Ever.
Just one word.........
Sephiroth's twin brother anyone?
well this is not only a shorter anime it's generally a better anime. I think it makes sense why they'd take their time
Ryan: Remember Ted, age (wisdom) before beauty.
Ted: Shut up!
Cowboy Bebop is one of the best anime, really.
Is this necessary the shows still fucking on re run on toonami
A week ago i got a boxset with all 26 episodes and the movie for £22 i loved what i seen.
Just finished watching this yesterday, goddamn this anime is fantastic! Probably my favorite anime now that I've watched it, unless One Punch Man S2 really packs the punches.
what you did there...I saw it
This is in my top 3 along with Death Note and RWBY
I need to start watching this show. Now!
Happy Birthday Ryan! ^^
Cowboy Bebop for the win! XD
Happy Birthday Ryan! Love Cowboy Bebop!
The song is called "Call Me, Call Me"
Happy Birthday, Ryan!!
This may be one of the few retrospectives I really won't watch since even though I watch a lot of animes Cowboy Bebop is one anime I have not watched.
Happy birthday dear Ryan lol
I really need to finish watching Cowboy Bebop, it's definitely one of the best animes ever
It'd be cool if you guys could do something for Neon Genesis if you like it, that's my favorite
My favorite anime are Samurai Champloo, Welcome To The N.H.K., and FMA Brotherhood. And Happy Birthday Ryan.
Honestly, I'd rank the movie with my favorite episodes (the 5 with Vicious).
i love this music
It's a fun Neo-noir. The soundtrack is also very excellent, even though I'm not very keen on Jazz.
My favorite of all time.
Or in Jazz fashion, have guest writers come in and introduce their own chaos?
is it really that good?i might look into it...
Ahh, Waltz for Venus. The one that got me into the series.
Edward is never in an episode where Vicious is and the music box that vicious gave grim is a tracker and that’s why he was imprisoned
currently torrenting the full series plus the first 7 minutes of the movie i hope its good
The best thing about Beebop is that the characters have flaws.
