  • Leadership styles like autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire styles in the workplace have different strengths and weaknesses. Which leadership style or type of manager are you? This video looks at each style and touches on how each one has some usefulness depending upon the situation.

    The video mainly compares and contrasts autocratic style vs. democratic style of leadership and touches briefly on the laissez-fair style.
    Autocratic Leadership = Boss-centered leadership with a high power distance between the leader and the employees.
    Democratic Leadership = Team-centered leadership. The leader seeks input on decisions and delegates.
    Laissez-faire Leadership = Hands-off leadership. In the French it means "Let do." In other words, let the people do as they choose.

      Was clear and really easy to settle in, thank you so much but I've a question.
      How can we differentiate between Autocratic and Bureaucratic Leadership?

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tabna. I don't normally hear Autocratic Leadership and Bureaucracy compared and contrasted in head-to-head fashion. In general, I see Bureaucracy (and any leadership within a bureaucracy) as representative of a type of organization or institution. In contrast, Autocratic Leadership is generally referring to the particular style an individual uses as a leader. It's quite possible that somebody working in a bureaucratic institution might display an autocratic leadership style (the two seem relatively compatible) but I've known many democratic leaders who happen to work in a bureaucratic institution. So, I don't see a direct comparison and contrast of the two concepts all that helpful. One is about the type of institution and the other is about an individual's style of leadership. Not sure if that helps, Tabna, but that's my point of view on it.

    Using the correct style catered to the individual situation is key. It's tremendously effective at resolving conflict. I have a very difficult job, but it is made easy by using a rolodex of leadership tactics; like the ones described.

      You raise a good point There's another leadership perspective that talks about adapting our styles to the situation. Thank you for this video Alex. I find that I practice, and hope people see me as practicing, a democratic leadership style. Listening to the different styles reminds me of a recent position that I resigned from where the manager practiced an unnecessary autocratic leadership style. It was a farse. So, it is important to know your leadership style, and as you state, know what others believe your leadership style to be as well. Equally important is the willingness to change your leadership style when necessary.

      Deng Xiao Penn said it does not matter if the cat is black or white. A Cat is good as long as it can catch the mice.
      But Deng Xiao Ping is also making an assumption what is a good cat. Good according to who? Different people Will and Must have different definitions. So, he would be right if his definition is narrowly lifting 800million out of poverty in exchange for murders at TianAnMen or killings of Tibetans or Minority ethnic people there. By the way, who audited it's 800million and not 700million?
      Let me cut to the chase. My point is what Deng said is right only if the Ruler is really Ultruistic. This means a Saint is required here. Mere mortals Deng is not perfect. If he is not perfect, can you expect a flawless system? Likewise, Democracy can work if the ruler is incorruptible and Ultruistic and wise and resourceful.
      Therefore, I agree with Deng but based on additional assumption of altruism. Where Deng is wrong is his assumption and definition and the fact that it's not just Dictatorship which can be the best form of govt. Democracy also can be the best form if done right. For example, a Benevolent Dictatorship can be a Democracy in terms of allowing elections. The style is dictatorial but elections allowed. Hybrid is what I talking about.

  • @petermorgan4720
    @petermorgan4720 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks, Alex. I am wondering if you can extend and structure this slightly differently? For example, you talk about the S&W of the Autocratic style but not about the S&W of Democratic styles, just the characteristics - so it is not easy to compare. You might, for example, say that in a crisis, you don't want a democratic style: democratic decision making (see Vroom and Yetton's work) works less well when you have either conflict or time issues. You don't, for example, want a democrat in charge of an army platoon, right or when you are deciding who to make redundant? But maybe you cover these issues in a different video... ;) Best wishes and GB. Peter Morgan, PhD.

    People have diferent profile, you can't use just one approach for everybody. There are diferent levels of commitment and motivation in each one. So we must master all the three styles and be wise when and how to aply then. Thats the art of leadership.
    Thats the way I prefer.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, ESM. You're very right about this. These three styles do not account for the situational factors involved. I'm usually democratic (and sometimes laissez-faire) but at times I have to get more autocratic, especially when deadlines are short and there's a lack of direction. There's another theory of leadership called the Situational Leadership Model that explains how leaders can and should pivot their approach to meet the needs of the moment.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know of many national governments that are laissez-faire. My area is mostly the study or workplaces and the leadership styles in the video fit best when explaining how individual people handle themselves as leaders.. Many healthcare settings and educational settings use laissez-faire leadership. They high the right people and let them do what they do. We do have a libertarian party in the USA, which prefers less government involvement, smaller sized government. But, I'm not sure that these leadership styles in the video, which are tied to individual leaders, can be extended quite so far as to fit cleanly when describing government systems. I'm not sure my answer helps but that's the best I've got for you. Thank you for the question.

  • @lethalspoon01
    @lethalspoon01 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A poor leader will lock into any of these three. A successful leader will determine their subordinate's skill level in whatever task is being performed and apply the style that makes sense. Authoritarian (Directive) supervision is a fantastic way to supervise a brand-new task. People get frustrated if they aren't told exactly how to do a new complicated process, but they don't always want to read the manual on their own, either. Participative supervision is a great way to let subordinates dip their toe into deciding how the task should be performed, but the leader makes the final decision. Laissez-faire (delegation) should be applied only when the subordinate has already mastered the task. Ultimately, the supervisor is responsible for verifying that these are being performed up to standard. Sticking to only one style will guarantee that your organization will fail when the work environment or tasks significantly change.

    Dear Coach - One among other attributes to being a coach is act neutral. You said you prefer Democratic leadership, but you did not mention the downside of Democratic leadership, as you did to Autocrat leadership. Is it only just because you prefer that style? Just an observation.

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Samir. Democratic leadership is the style I personally use, my preferred style when I'm in a leadership role. But on your first comment, being a coach is not about being neutral. It's my job to help clients get results. I know lots of leadership coaches and the only thing their clients want is good results. If both research and practical experience shows that one approach is better, then that's what I'll likely recommend. The advice is given on a case-by-case basis and is customized but neutrality is not a conversation that a clients has ever brought up when they contact me. If you're interested in learning more about these three styles, I have an in-depth video series on all three of them. th-cam.com/video/opDFifEyGHA/w-d-xo.html

    • @alexanderlyon
      @alexanderlyon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hear you and you are free to disagree with me but I wasn't merely giving my opinion. To be clear, research studies shows that productivity definitely goes down when autocratic leaders are not in the room. If the top leader hires other autocratic deputies to be there when he/she is not around, then autocratic leaders are still present. That is certainly one way to keep productivity up. But, if ALL autocratic leaders leave the room, productivity drops. Thats what the studies show. In contrast, when a democratic leader leaves the room, productivity remains high.
