About 18 years ago my daughter, Heidi, 27 at the time, was put in the hospital because of her diabetes. She was put on the list for kidneys and pancreas. I have severe health issues of my own, so her brother, Wyatt, then 24, said he would stay a few nights. Bless his heart. When I went down to stay, she had me kicked out! I asked too many questions. And, the reason she did not like that is because she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but she told NO ONE. Family members talked about what a horrible mother I was...I felt like I didn't deserve to be a mother! Fast forward to Feb 4, 2008, her birthday. She was home and we celebrated her 28th birthday. Back in hospital a few weeks and my son brought her home on March 4th. I was so mad...we could barely get her inside the house!! When she was settled, I snuck to my room and called her doctor. I asked him why on earth he would send her home like that. He said, didn't she tell you? I said tell me what? He said, Deb...she is totally full of cancer. There is nothing we can do. She refused all treatment. He was really upset and I robotically thanked him for taking care of her. I sat in the corner crying and praying. I had run into something that I could not beg, borrow, or steal to fix it. I had always been able to fix anything that came along. Hospice told me she had maybe a week to live. On the night of the the 8th, her blood sugar dropped to 23 and she had to go to hospice. My sister told me and Wyatt to get a good nights sleep and she would spend the night with Heidi in hospice. My sister is a very strong believer so there was a comfort knowing that if Heidi had any questions about God, or death, or anything kike that my sis could help her. The next morning, we went to hospice. She was resting...they kept her very comfortable. ALL of her family got there, her dad and stepmom, siblings, Nana and Papa (her favorite people on the planet!)...everyone. When Wyatt and I got there, she said, "Wyatt" and he ran over and sat on the bed and held her hand. He said, "Im here sis...I'm not going anywhere" At 9:26 am, Wyatt said I think sis just took her last breath. He was right. Shortly after, I noticed he was not there. I found him outside, bent over, sobbing uncontrollably. He has never been the same. He has such vivid memories of the last months with her. They were so, so close. I too am a believer. I want to be assured that my daughter found somewhere far better than this life. I believe that God chose me to be Heidi's mama for a reason. He decided that I was strong enough to take this knife in my heart, every day for the rest of my life? Because I am 68 and Wyatt is 44 this September, and we still want her back. Wyatt, sadly turned to drugs. Heroin. Yep, heroin is his best friend, lover, whore, partner...he is in the land of H. I have saved him on several occasions. In 2012, I found him on his floor at 8:30 am, seizing. Paramedis came. they gave him Narcan twice and it didn't phase him. By noon, his head was shaved for brain surgery for a tennis-ball-sized blood clot against the brain in the executive decision area. Great...his decision making is probably worse than before. By the grace of God he walked out of that hospital with just short term memory issues. He has an above genius IQ but can't tell you what day it is or if he ate breakfast. Month off of drugs. But, he went back!! I am so sorry, I have carried on too long. My heart breaks for any mama that has to say good bye to their beautiful babes. God bless you each and every one...

Sounds like a lot, I’m sorry you didnt have a good relationship with your daughter and son and they didn’t find it easy to communicate with you. it’s obviously causing you great grief and regret. We can’t turn back the clock so we must find comfort in the knowledge we tried even if it wasn’t enough or what they needed. I’m sorry you didn’t get to spend the time with your daughter at the end but it’s important to be grateful she wasn’t alone. I hope your son finds healing and peace as the demon is relentless and always wants to win.

Oh Deb, how much you went through and are still going through. Your children both sound amazing in their own ways. Watching your child die feeling so helpless to do anything, like you say - this is something you can beg borrow or steal your way out of fixing, yet a mother should be able to fix anything for their child. Until they can't. That is a feeling you can never ever recover from, we get it and we are sorry that has been part of your story too. Sending you love to know you are not alone. Thank you for watching Em story and for taking the time to comment and share your story too x

Listening to this has brought back so many memories, my nephew was diagnosed when he was 14 yrs old, he had a very aggressive spinal tumour, he started chemo in May, he died in the November , my brother and Sister in law, and all of the family went through so much, we live in Suffolk and he was treated at Royal marsden in Surrey, I learned so much from my nephew and think about him all the time, thank you so much for sharing your story, I went on to have 3 children of my own, and we lost our son at 5 and a half months , I then really understood how the loss of a child impacts you, and my understanding of my Sister and brother in law’s grief . @@RoomToGrieve your podcasts have really helped me, I realise I had bottled so much up, as my husband really took our sons death hard , we both did , but I needed to talk about it and he couldn’t and so I kept so much inside, my husband was diagnosed with cancer Mantle cell lymphoma in 2014, two weeks later , I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, but my main concern was Steve, after chemo and an auto stem cell transplant and an immunotherapy treatment finally he was in remission but sadly he contracted Covid , he was taken into hospital on the 3rd December and I wasn’t allowed to visit, I never contracted Covid even though I was with him all the time until he was admitted on day 8, on 14th December , they called and said they was putting him on end of life care, I was able to then go and be with him , with our two daughters who had just told us, they were both expecting their second babies in the Summer, the hospital had said Steve had been unresponsive for 2 days, but he told me he loved me twice and that meant the world , he passed away with me laying beside him 17 hours later, we would have been married 40 years that next Summer, losing Steve has been so hard, but listening to you both taking about Emily and Brad has made me realise I hadn’t fully grieved for our son Daniel, and before I felt so very alone , friends can’t contemplate the loss of a child as they haven’t experienced it and I wouldn’t ever want them too, it’s like being part of a club , that none of us ever wanted to be a part of, I can’t thank you both enough for being so brave and also for thinking of others when your both going through such pain yourselves, I feel so less alone and feel understood .

Heart Breaking Story. Emily was an incredible, amazing young woman. Bless her. Nobody young should have c. It shows us all how quickly a situation can change, from being unwell with a few odd symptoms and then at peace. I kept telling myself when my mum passed, at least she's not in any pain and having to have more treatment. I'm going through my own journey now with a little one. Treasure every second of every day and do everything while you can. We never know how long we all have. Bless her what an incredibly strong mum and daughter going through all that together and dealing with the news. It should never happen to youngsters. 💗. I bought McDonald's into hospital for my friend who asked for it. Sadly thar was the last time she ate, and she seemed fine. Lack of compassion is dreadful and I've experienced the same both with myself and my mum and little one. When you're at your lowest and have no answers and so many questions, all you need is a sympathetic ear, smile and someone to ask if they can do anything for you. Emily would be so so proud of you and the rest of the family. She knew you were there throughout and that's important. Hugs xxx

Karen, thank you for sharing your Emily with us. She sounds like such a witty strong young lady. You are a beautiful strong family.
I lost two brothers before I was 15, one of which was my older brother from cancer. I can truly say those two years are still a blur. I saw my mama be the Lionness every second of every day. Towards the end I remember feeling so terrible for wishing he would go, his pain was just beyond belief, it was in every part of his body. I couldn’t believe how much pain a human could survive both physically and mentally.
Years on my Mama just dropped dead in a split second in the next room. To this day i am only able to keep sane because I know my Mama is resting now. No more pain. I wish you and your family all of the love and pray for some peace if possible. 🤍🤍🤍

My heart was deeply moved when you said about your daughters eyes..i can resonate with that..

This is how my daddy would have been if this was one of mg siblings or me. Whenever we were sick or in the hospital he NEVER left our side. I was diagnosed with CVID (Common Variable Immunodeficiency). My bone marrow stop producing an immune system. Most people have heard the story about the Boy in the Bubble. His disease is what i was diagnosed with. I stayed sick A LOT and almost lost my life several times. I will never forget when I went septic and ended up going into septic shock. I was on the very edge of death. The entire time i was in ICU and then when i was put in a regular room, he never once left my side unless he went to the cafeteria to get food or to go to the bathroom to use it or take a shower. If one of us kids needed to go to the dr, he took us. Dentist, he took us. I had to go to physical therapy a few times after being bed bound in ICU for weeks at a time, he went with me. And its not that my mother didnt want to. She loved us very much as well but he wouldn't leave us and one of them had to stay with the other kids while one stayed at the hospital. He was the type that if we were on antibiotics and it said to take them every 4 hours, he would set his alarm to go off in the middle of the night to make sure he woke us up for our next dose.
I really miss my daddy 😢

My little girls eyes were a vivid blue, I lost her when she 3 1/2. That was 26 yrs ago. The pain isn’t as sharp as it once was but it’s never far from my mind and heart. ♥️ our bodies insist on breathing so we have to learn how to live a life without them.

So sorry for your loss? My son Conor died 13/7/2024 with Glastoma brain stem cancer 3 times I had him down in hospital for tests because he was paralysed down the hole left side of his body feeling sick and bad headaches. Doctors said it was nurlogical that he would get better in time. He kept getting worse over 5 weeks it was a Tuesday I was suppose to work that night as I am a carer in the community conor came into help me put shopping away he went into livingroom I went into talk to him and he couldn't remember who I was so I rang an ambulance went straight to hospital doctor kept him in said they made a wrong diagnosis he went for a scan next day nothing showed up went then for a Mri scan found out he had a tumour. He was in Altnagalvin Hospital for 4 weeks then was brought up to the Royal hospital in Belfast for biopsy? That's when they told me he hadn't got long to live he was in the Royal for a week and a half git back to Altnagalvin hospital he died 3 days later ? It has totally devastated me he was only 24 years old I miss so so much he couldn't talk or hardly hear or see at the end he was so brave 💔

I read your message last night and couldn’t answer straight away, I needed time to think of how to respond to everything your son and your family have been through. I have no platitudes, all I can say is that we understand, your anger, frustration, disbelief, pain, unfairness and heartbreak. You will probably be on autopilot for the next few months at least, due to the trauma and shock of losing Conor, just think of a day at a time, some days even an hour at a time. Please feel free to email us directly roomtogrievepodcast@gmail.com then it’s more private, myself or Bec will always respond, you can build up a network of support and I promise this will help, having people around you that just “get it” can make a massive difference. Love and understanding from both of us, Karen xx
