    My father served in the British army in WW2. He spent most of the war years in Burma (was one of the last British soldiers to leave Rangoon to come home). I always remember him for years shaving with a very small mirror right up to the mid 1970’s! He always used the same DE razor right up to his 80’s when he moved to an electric razor for his own safety!!! Sadly he passed away in 2019, I still miss him every day. He fought, put his life on the line so I could have a better world. Thanks Dad ❤.

      Thanks for sharing that story of your Father! What a great man he was. Do you still have his shaving stuff?

    • @daytonaukpc9387
      @daytonaukpc9387 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No unfortunately he got rid of it all later in life apart from the small mirror which he never got rid of. I remember him letting me as a young child pretend shave with an older DE razor with no blade! He did late in life give me his army papers, which included a 100 rupee note given by his commanding officer at the end of the war in the east. This still looks in amazing condition to this day!

    Lucky son. My father and grandfather used electric razors (my grandfather worked for Philips). So each electric razor was used by 3 generation. I think I'm the first in my family that shaves with a safely razor since the 70's or so.

    I got a ww1 1918 on Ebay last week the serial number begins with f which I looked up and that was also us army 1918.
    It looks like new small crack in the handle and gives a fantastic shave as fast or slow as you like I just shaved with it for the fifth time tonight and it's the closest shave I ever got with any razor even on my neck.
    Hope junior likes his one.

    I have a bunch of Gillette Old Types a couple of Single Rings through the early 1920's models. It's great shaving with solid brass razor history. My New Years Day shave was with a 1912--1914 Ever-Ready Lather Catcher. BBS without even trying.

    Great choice on the razor for your son. I have a similar old-type Gillette (non-military) and it's one of my favorites. I do have a WWI Army issue AutoStrop razor set which is pretty cool. That might be something to keep an eye out for, for your son, if he gets more into collecting military items and/or razors. I hope he enjoys the Gillette!

    This kit is in exceptional condition, far better than mine is. IMO, the kit to get would be the Army/Navy set which came in an embossed nickel plated clamshell case (with an Eagle and an Anchor), and had the 1920 revised head shape. It is a slightly milder and more forgiving razor. It is the same as the "Brownie", but this kit was sold in PX's to military personnel.
    It is almost impossible to find an "old type" razor with an uncracked handle. Razor Emporium makes a solid brass handle that is very close to the original, just heavier.
    Gillette made very fancy canvas covered officer's kits too, which included nickel plated tubes containing a brush and a shave stick, but these are a little bulky, IMO.

    Happy New Years! Was the razor rusty or water stained? What did you use to clean it? I have had no luck with scrubbing bubbles or vinegar and baking soda. It's a Black Beauty, A-1, 1980. The head, the doors, have water marks.☹️

    • @SinatraLennon
      @SinatraLennon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was as clean as you see here when I got it! I just scrubbed it with a toothbrush and some hand soap.

      That is remarkable! 118 years old, clean as a whistle and shaves like a dream!

    • @ivermec-tin666
      @ivermec-tin666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nathaniel, the black beauty has an aluminum handle, otherwise I would suggest soaking it in warm water with Dawn detergent, and then running it through the dishwasher. I would not run an AL adjustable razor through the dishwasher. I would not use vinegar or baking soda on any razor. Vinegar can etch metal, and baking soda is an abrasive.
      After the basic cleaning with warm soapy water and toothbrush, rinsing and drying, I would try a jewelers cloth (Razor Emporium sells them), or a mild polishing compound such as flitz or simichrome or Nevr Dull wadding. All of these materials are intended for polishing jewelry. The head of this razor is nickel plated brass. Do not use Brasso! It is far too abrasive... The wadding is a chemical approach. It works wonders, but it's smelly, and you will need to wash again after using it.

      I’ve never heard of Let’s Game It Out! Do they say that in a similar way?

    • @FatsquatchPNW
      @FatsquatchPNW 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @SinatraLennon Let's Game It Out is a TH-cam channel where a guy named Josh plays video games kind of...wrong. But in like a good way? Just as a general example, he'll play a farming sim and discover some kind of exploit to generate extra cash or whatever, and then go TOTALLY overboard with it. When he does, he'll say something like "I think you can see where this is going. Hold, please." And then a card will flash on the screen that says something like "17 hours later" and he'll come back and show/describe how he's amassed this absurd amount of something in a thoroughly ridiculous way that's both hilarious and disturbing. It's gotten to the point where the devs of a game called Hydroneer have included him as a Wanted poster in the game for doing the things he does. Even if you're not all that into gaming, he's a ton of fun to watch.
