Hi bro, my grand mother worked at a cutlers in Sheffield 🇬🇧, she did the engraving on blades, immaculate handwriting, beautiful work, you just have to appreciate real craftsmanship, your collection is superb, Sheffield steel was the best, my moms maiden name is Timmins, it’s a big town in the USA, all timmins are out of a small town in the uk, they took the crafts to the USA, you are so blessed, superb steel, craftsmanship, I am a smith, a Saxon out of Germany, in past generations, nothing is more pleasing to me than honing a straight blade! They sing when honed on purple welsh slate, kind regards Tim

Hi geo, I just happen to have some, made my own stone last year, brilliant! Llangollen, Wales is a great place to find good samples.. if you would like me to send you a couple of rough hewn pieces, you would have to dress them yourself, I would happy to send them to you. The thicknesses are around 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch thick and you can have any with and length you desire, cut mine to 4 x9. Give me a mailing address and they are in the post, kind regards Tim 🇬🇧

What a collection. I started straight razor shaving 4 years ago and i am hooked. Have never used any other razor other that my cut throats.
All credit goes to you as i've mastered the art of straight razor shaving watching your videos. You are my Guru! I have a collection of stones including a Naniwa 12k.
Sharing something. I finish off on my Naniwa using a blend of oil and water instead of only water. I think it gives a better finish. Would like your comments on that.

That Jones from Chicago is interesting. I have a 1920’s-1930’s marked “Alpha Razor Co. / Chicago, Ill.” It is beautiful, and it shaves! Does need some geometry work but shaves. I have to correct it and preserve the heavy spine wear. I have a crack in the scale near the pivot pin but will keep the scales on there as they still work. So the Jones from Chicago you have has my heart Geo👍

That's a fantastic collection Geo!! 😃😃. If I can say just one thing. You should keep a thin film of oil on the blades and not touch them with your bare fingers. The acid in your skin will eat into the steel and they will also rust. I am a collector of antique edged weapons and tools so I know from sad experience of decay. A finger print will rust and mess up your fine blades. Your collection is really wonderful!! It's nice to see some good old Sheffield steel on some.

    Hey Geo My Dude!!! 💈😁🤙🏻💈
-I honed my First Straight Razor today! A Gold Dollar 208 and I think I did pretty well given the fact that I tried to grind down the heel/stabilizer with my Naniwa lapping stone. But that didn’t do much. And I wasn’t trying to take it too far and mess anything up. I was going to use a Dremel like everyone else does but I never did it before and same thing I didn’t want to take it too far. So I’m going to send it out to “Dr. Matt” and he’s going to send me 2 more Gold Dollar 66’s with the heel and toe fixed (with no edge) and he’ll fix my 208 as well.
As of right now not counting the one I just honed and the 2 gold dollars I just bought off Dr Matt I have a Theirs-Issard extra hollow and a GD 66 both honed by The Stallion and I just bought this Vintage NEAR MINT J.A. Henckels 11/16 half hollow “Twin” Razor with black scales
Can’t wait to use it!!!!! 💈😁👍🏻💈

Then I sold that and bought a J.A Henckel 72 golden checkered Friodur INOX. It’s my very first stainless steel razor. I noticed a different right away honing it and shaving with it. It’s a whole different ballgame

Hey Geo, Great video, and very nice collection. At this time, I only have five straight razors. I have a beautiful George butler Sheffield with ivory scales, the face of William Shakespeare, his name, a line from one of his plays, and the name of the play which is love labors lost acid etched on the blade which is a round point. The butler SR also has the number one on the blade as well which I believe is the number of the batch, for I have seen other George Butler’s just like mine with other numbers. I also have one diamond edge square point, A really cool looking gold dollar, some razor which I believe is made by some company with the name bush in it, and it is a smiling blade. I also have one which at this time, I cannot remember who makes it which is currently out to be honed. The blade has some beautiful spine work which looks like vines, and a little naked lady on the scales. My friend that I sent the razor to said that I should call that one the beaver blade LOL. Have a great day, and stay safe, and warm there in Chicago.

What a very nice collection, why don't you use tape to protect the spine from scratches during sharpening?
Can you make a video of the different ways to hold the Straight Razor?
the Japanese style was new to me, I'm still having issues with the position of the handle and the chance of hitting something with that!
I know it's a lot of practice, but I prefer to learn the right manners!
    Thanks in advance.

Also, you should've mentioned how much you paid for the razor and why you bought it. A nice background story would've been nice.

Many are shave ready and some are not. I've had some of them for over 10 years so I can't recall what I paid for them or exactly where they all came from. Garage sales, estate sales, online, etc.

I’ve noticed that sometimes the “tang” of the razor is grooved on some razors (like Dovo) but there are some razors that have smooth tangs, the question is what can be done if the tang is too smooth to grip on?
Oh and have you ever thought about doing custom scales since I’ve seen your website has “Shave nation” strops?

    • @geofatboy
      @geofatboy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Those grooves are also called Jimps. Designed to give better grip. Yes, I have looked into custom scales and may soon carry them. Thanks for the recommendation.
