@@sergeyostrikov356 Makes sense! Does sound totally doable. But also explains the lack of obstacle avoidance / mono vision depth estimation (unlike the hover air?)
I really hope some big company buys Hover and they improve their support and availability. It seems like the best balance for for a tracking drone. Looking forward to your review of the new one.

Waiting on the new N3 goggles for some light FPV but this is now also out of stock instantly. Keep well and nice bike
Awesome, i’ve been in the process of moving. I didn’t know that they released a new update. Amazing. I love this drone, especially for the $200 price tag but I do love my Hover air max. It works very well but a lot more expensive.👍🏽💯
I've got the DJI Avata 2. There is a whole "tuning" menu where you can set the speed limits in each direction for each mode. I'm a little surprised something like that isn't part of the Neo control firmware. Anyway, useful info as always - thanks, Ray!
Yeah, you can tell that DJI is trying really hard not to undercut their own more expensive drones. Which is too bad, because I'd happily have paid double the price for more software features. In many ways, it's what made Hover so popular: They had zero effs given about undercutting their own products (because at the time, they had no other products). Now of course, they're flirting a bit in the danger zone in terms of pricing versus something like a Mini 4 Pro/etc... But if the Hover can hold-out with far better quality/tracking, then it'll still win for a while.
It seems that the biggest use-case for cameras today is to create youtube videos reviewing them. What a strange economy! Oh and yes, I love to watch them. Thanks. 😊
Thanks Ray. In my use case - not needing speed - it’s been great for casual shots and some walking /run follow. Easier to justify for occasional use than the Hover given the price difference.
Great channel with honest reviews! 👍 Impressive firmware update! However, it seems that higher speeds come with more crashes in the wood: is this just a false impression? Because if that's the case, it would make it impractical for mountain biking. It would also be interesting to see how tracking works on a pump track, which involves many direction changes. Thanks for this updated review! 🤩
Indirectly, yes, but only because the higher speed means it's going to generally have to change directions faster (as with all drones). Most companies taper the movements a bit, to try and smooth things out - else, it gets fugly to watch. It's a careful balance between too much taper (and hitting objects because you didn't swerve out of the way), and too little taper (and being unwatchable, but doesn't hit objects).
This case has been holding on for 3 years now (iPhone 13 Pro), and taking a beating on my cargo bike handlebars (plus pocket of course). Love the Peak Design cases.
@@DcrainmakerMainly because I record my indoor talking head and all b-roll (usually also indoors) at 25 fps. So want to be able to drop in Neo footage. Nice I didn't knew about the update. Thank's for that. The Neo is great for it's price, I only hope the next Neo has a SD card slot cos I keep running out of memory after 5gb of filming while the app says 22gb of free space!
Technically it has 'Direction Track', which supposedly will let you track from in front. But in my testing (and just about every other person on the internet), it only stays in front for about 5-7 seconds, unless at slower than walking paces. Otherwise, it'll fall back behind. :(
Great job again Ray. Thanks for the time you put in it. But your Hover is still in customs? Are you kidding? You probably had to buy it yourself I suppose? One warning, the lens scratches very easy so I advise to put a (ND)filter on it for protection while testing.
Indeed, still in customs. They're sending another, but I don't have tracking for it yet. Are you saying put ND on the Hover Pro/Max, or the Neo? cheers!
@@Dcrainmaker Wow that takes a long time mate. I meant the Hover, I've got the Pro and flew it into a branch so now there's a small scratch on the lens. Glad it does not really show up in my footage. Thanks for the detailed testing and for the good news, yes I suppose it was too much to ask for DJI to mention the actual speed in the release notes ! Talking of which they don't say anything about improving tracking so I wonder if the "Direction Track" now works at anything faster than walking speeds for SideTrack and Dolly equivalents to the Hover drones. Crazy situation for customs ! So DHL have made no attempt to contact you and tell you what was needed to get the drone out of customs ?! It's likely they're not happy with the "paperwork" provided by Hover but that's fixable...provided a fee called VAT is paid ;-)
Sadly, the direction track is the same. I had included it in the video/shooting, but cut it out as was trying to keep things moving along. Same-same though. As for DHL, yeah, I've contacted them, they've contacted me, and supposedly they're now waiting on customs themselves to respond. Supposedly.
In FPV Manual.mode it does 16 m/s 57.6 KPH / 35.79 MPH Of course it's not tracking doing this, but it proves there's additional capability to some extent.
Indeed. Never understood why sport mode with a regular controller (e.g. RC2 or N2) doesn't do the 57.6KPH just like every other drone. Seemingly an upsell push. Makes slightly more sense now with the new N3 Goggles being reasonbly priced, whereas before it was downright silly because nobody was gonna spend that much extra and not get the Avata 2 bundled with it (short of someone needing to stay under the 250g limit).
Anyone else feels like their NEO is almost like a pet? Like idk what it is but it looks friendly and inviting vs the hover looks like a top level science project lol
Cool beans! Will we ever see a day when an inexpensive drone can shoot video in "lead" mode (take video from in front of you) or "side" mode? It would be more interesting than just follow mode. Basic Garmin, Wahoo, and Hammerhead GPS units know how to lead you with a programmed route and even tell you all about an upcoming climb without a programmed route, so the technology should be available to add to drones. Is that a bridge too far, or are there other technical or cost considerations?
An issue I have found while mountain biking, is that it doesnt like to reduce its altitude. This is a major issue with steep trails, it just maintains the height of when it was activated and very soon ends up in the treetops as the rider goes down!
Thanks, I'm buying one.. want to see how far their cheap tech has gone since their gen 1 DJI mini i own. Looks like in a few years we will have DJI neo with obstacle avoidance 😂 always getting better.
The NEO is an awesome piece of gear. At its price point limit your expectations. Would like DJI to add "Camera" with timed shots, say 5 Sec & 10 Sec intervals to ALL 6 of the NEO preset shooting modes. At present think only the "Spotlight mode" mode offers timed photos. Recognize that drone capture has been prioritized towards Videographers. Only offering the "Video" Camera Mode is a bit limiting. Primarily a Still photographer. With my Mavic 3 have captured some amazing stills. NEO Camera will have to wait for the NEO Pro so don’t big deal it. Simple an limited Camera/Still settings should be an easy add.
I sent my back when I discovered that the follow mode had much lower speed. Got a second hand DJI Air instead but that was crap at following. Even with firmware update. Also tried the two alternative apps. One didnt even work. Sold that with a small profit. So now this one seems interesting again.
"Did DJI list what the tracking speed was in the release notes ? Of course not that would have been useful" 🤣 However 32-ish km/h is a pretty big jump and makes it much more usable for general cycling 👍
Nice work. Maybe try using a bit lower in your woods area. You also can only the fly use the voice commands like hey fly and lower. But I’m sure you know this
Is it possible to fly it in manual mode to a certain point, then tell it to enter spotlight mode? Seems like that would be a good feature - could sort of leapfrog down the trail.
I had a remote already from the Air 3, so I didn't need to purchase another one. But in general, if you plan to use it for any scenic shots (e.g. not follow shots), I'd probably recommend the remote. You can use your phone, but the range is very limited (50 meters away).
I bought a Neo and sent it back. My issue was not the following but the mode where you walk/run towards it and it's supposed to stay in front of you. It always ended up behind me within a few seconds unless I walked at funeral procession pace. For me, that mode just doesn't work and surely we're going to get pretty bored with endless videos of the back of people's heads.
They updated the FW.. direction track works 100% perfectly for me. Long experience WITH DJI products has taught many of us that they WILL get promised features to work. They diligently stay at it until everything works as advertised.
Direction Track works perfectly for you? Like others, I can't get it mroe than either walking pace, or..well...that's it. Even after today's update, no luck.
Hey Ray, looks like you're using one of the new fancy helmets with a mono-strap. Is there any chance you could do a short review on these although it's not a sport electronics product, maybe even just a TH-cam Shorts format?
Hmm, maybe. TLDR: It's ok. Neither good or bad for me (been using it since July). On one hand, it's easier to adjust fit (though that rarely changes), on the other hand you have to remove your glasses to put on helmet. Instead, honestly my favorite part of the helmet is actually the little magnetic USB-C red light on the rear of it. Charge lasts forever, and is good in a pinch/emergency when I find myself out far later than I thought. Super bright light.
As an owner of a Hover and DJI Mini 3 Pro, I ordered one of these. I was not pleased at all. I returned mine. I wanted to like it, but it has problems. The biggest issues are the following problems like image and subject positioning. But, it would swing wildly during tracking in certain modes. It would easily lose the subject like it did when you dropped your phone on the trail. I never got to any speed tests because of the tracking and mode issues. It would be set in the side (position) tracking mode and suddenly stop and, for all intents and purposes, behave like it was in hover mode. I could not get it to re-obtain me for anything. I had done all the updates and did calibrations, hoping it would correct the issues it had. It would often just stop recording while it was in motion, performing the mode it was in like rocket, or whatever. So, a lot of the videos were simply cut off. It would not keep me (the subject) in the middle of the shot. It had a lot of problems.
crazy that it's so slow because it's basically just the 2018 $99 dji tello with follow me mode and the tello would do 20mph using an iphone as a controller
I have been checking your channel every day since the start of November for the DJI vs HoverAir Pro/Pro Max video. I want to know if the HAX1 Pro is worth the extra money vs the Neo. #FirstTimeDroneBuyer
I have been looking at getting one of these for running. Been watching your videos of the hover air x1 and this. The battery is quite short on the hover. 11mins. How long is the battery on the neo as I cannot see on the specs. I would like a run time of around 60 minutes so spare batteries needed etc. The neo looks like a really good price. Any thoughts anyone. Thanks. Great video as always.
I'm a GREEK TH-camr and GoPro send me to promote the cameras, it is true or not? And how many videos I have to upload with this content, thank you! Answer please cause I'm scared to open the link.
I would like to correct you in one thing. You said Neo doesn't have any obstae avoidance sensor comparing to Hover. But as I recently learned even Hover doesn't have obstacle avoidance sensor, it only has collision detection sensor which isn't the same thing. And even that is pretty limited and will not work in higher speed
The Pro/Max units have rear-facing sensors so that when flying backwards it uses a ToF depth sensor to roughly avoid the bigger things. At least, in theory. Further, the Max unit has an added rear visual camera to again, theoretically, avoid things better. Again - all things the Neo doesn't have.
That's true but I don't have ProMaxconly Pro. I am just saying even Hoverair isn't perfect (still a lot of bugs which hopefully will be resolved in future FW updates). What I really liked on your video is that Neo seems to be better in copying your path and not doing shortcuts. I haven't tested my Pro in tight areas as it's getting pretty cold outside
@@muchanic Yeah, the Neo's path following change (even compared to other DJI drones) is a big deal. The Hover X1 (non-Pro) doesn't have that, and obviously I'm still waiting on customs to release my Pro/Max units to try it. But how well the Neo can copy ones ground path is pretty clutch.
@@Dcrainmakeranother thing that I am missing on my Pro is basic details about flight - altitude, speed, distance from controller. I heard they are planning this for future updates
Unfortunately not (tried it). That's because while drones of DJI past could be sped up by taking off prop guards, for a nubmer of years now, that's not really been the limiter. DJI generally heavily overpowers their drones (in terms of motors), well beyond required spec. Instead, the limiter is purely a software speed cap tied to ground-speed. Which is why this drone can go twice as fast again in FPV mode (with the prop guards on). Cheers!
could i use this to take wedding reception footage? basically of my MC/DJ friend for his social media....or does this require me jumping through some government hoops?
How much flight time do you lose with the increased speed? With the smaller batteries, I assume the flight time goes down exponentially with increased speeds.
Everyone says the video quality is terrible(over-sharpened). I saw in some of the videos that the sharpness can be reduced with a rc and the video quality is okayish. Is that the case or still the video quality is same? I am a beginner and thinking to buy this drone. Should I go for this or go for the mini2 se. Appreciate your thoughts!
@Supersonic Traveller. I find the video quality of the Neo very acceptable. With a little enhancing and editing I get good video results. See also my comment about the Neo video quality as reaction to the comment of Dcrainmaker 😀
@@Dcrainmakerif you can give feedback to DJI, tell them the Neo needs asap: - manual image control even without a remote - more manual settings as flat profile, noise reduction off/low/normal and the same for contrast - much more love in the low light algorithms With the sharpness on -2 and EV -0.3 or -0.7, with good light the image is quite usable! But as soon as it gets to bigger contrasts or lower light, it’s as bad as a 10 year old phone. I think they need to review and take more time optimizing it, it could get much better.
I've got a skydio 2 and i gotta say for $200 i'm super impressed with the neo. I love the idea of going in the opposite direction of the skydio. Super light, super cheap. My only complaint is better camera and maybe faster tracking on neo 2. But overall i love it.

I almost wish this was $30-$50 more expensive and they added that to make it just a bit faster, maybe would fix all the issues.
They updated the FW.. direction track works 100% perfectly for me. Long experience WITH DJI products has taught many of us that they WILL get promised features to work. They diligently stay at it until everything works as advertised.
@@toadlguya Neo Pro with obstacle avoidance sensors and faster stable tracking would be ideal 👌🏽
Direction Track works perfectly for you? Like others, I can't get it mroe than either walking pace, or..well...that's it. Even after today's update, no luck.
@@Dcrainmaker I saw a guy do a demo. Keep is, for turns make them gradual, and medium/FAR distance Close wants to trim your eyebrows.
Very nice
So good
Can shoot slow motion video with neo? From India
If you use 1080p 60fps, then yes (you'd need to slow it in post)
Nice! Thx.
Thanks!
crazy that it's so slow because it's basically just the 2018 $99 dji tello with follow me mode and the tello would do 20mph using an iphone as a controller
Will there be a 4k video quality update?
I hope so but…I don’t think so. Write DJI as I did, they may do something if you complain
This is a much better speed for tracking a mountain biker (except in the faster downhills). But with extra speed comes extra crashability.
When will u do the review vid of that new canyon helmet?
I'm ducking and diving watching this from 6:00 or so.
can you do a rundown on what you use for a mic and how you connect it?
I don't use the mic with it. I just record seperately and blend in post.
It won’t be ready till Dji comes out with a beacon.
Are you testing the Amazfit T-Rex 3?
Yup, on my wrist in the video.
Those customs are a rainmaker lol
Hahaha
I'm a GREEK TH-camr and GoPro send me to promote the cameras, it is true or not? And how many videos I have to upload with this content, thank you! Answer please cause I'm scared to open the link.
Show!
I mean it’s not a $1000 drone. I think it does just fine for the price
Take off the prop guards. Might help with speed and battery life
Unfortunately not (tried it).
Which phone support do you use please ? Thanks !
How much flight time do you lose with the increased speed? With the smaller batteries, I assume the flight time goes down exponentially with increased speeds.
Waiting for your HoverAir X1 Pro Max review
…me too.
Hi, how to use the vertical video option?
The update works really well! But the image quality and noise still remain horrible 😅
@@SupersonicTraveller True on all accounts
@Supersonic Traveller. I find the video quality of the Neo very acceptable. With a little enhancing and editing I get good video results. See also my comment about the Neo video quality as reaction to the comment of Dcrainmaker 😀
@@Dcrainmakerif you can give feedback to DJI, tell them the Neo needs asap:
- manual image control even without a remote
- more manual settings as flat profile, noise reduction off/low/normal and the same for contrast
- much more love in the low light algorithms
With the sharpness on -2 and EV -0.3 or -0.7, with good light the image is quite usable! But as soon as it gets to bigger contrasts or lower light, it’s as bad as a 10 year old phone. I think they need to review and take more time optimizing it, it could get much better.
@ with a little editing - I agree. And for social media, like Instagram it is perfect. But this drone is definitely not for a full-screen video.
Does this drone in follow mode also have the ability to take pictures at some time interval instead of recording video?
no
@@Peakabike And is there any model that has this feature?
@@jandzacovsky5281 with autonomous flying? No
I've got a skydio 2 and i gotta say for $200 i'm super impressed with the neo. I love the idea of going in the opposite direction of the skydio. Super light, super cheap. My only complaint is better camera and maybe faster tracking on neo 2. But overall i love it.
A bmx track would be a good test
