- The DJI NEO just received a major firmware update aimed at action sports, and follow-me scenarios. I dive into how it works across 10 different tests.
I dive into the November 2024 firmware update that increases the tracking speed of the DJI NEO, to see how well it works in real life.

This is a pretty neat drone (in theory). I am glad they fixed it (somewhat), was pretty disappointed by the first tests. Thanks for not giving up 😄
First of all. Always great reviews, with great energy and fun talking.
Second. Love to see you responding on so many comments.
Really sending us a message that its for the interest of the community and the knowledge.
Not just another upload to monetize.
All the best too you.
Thanks, muhc appreciated!!!
You should have way more followers ! Best channel for honest reviews with the good amount of details. BRAVO !
Thanks!!!
Thanks, I was getting 13mph on my e-board, now I can go faster.
“It just yolo’s everything” lol
I wonder if it’s YOLO v8-n
awesome i didn't realized they updated it so I can select what I wish to follow with my phone let alone increase the speed. This is great for the type of content I do myself and glad I purchased this drone on release date
Thanks!
Love that you automatically say oh no in Dutch! Thanks for this update on the neo.
I think it is a great drone and I am on my way to Tasmania and I will be taking the NEO instead of my MAVIC or Avata. I am sure it will do a great job. Thanks for your great reviews.
Great video as always. Thanks for the update.
at 9:00 "Hello buddy? Little buddy!" 🤣
What an update! wow
Thx. For this test
Great update! I will give it a try
Awesome review.
Great information, thanks
Yes I was testing this on my EUC and it was pretty slow. Nice to get some extra footage but too slow to really track. I will go and test out the new firmware this weekend as mine is also now updated. I must say I hope they can keep on fine tunning it and giving us more speed all round just so we can keep in line with the Hover Air. Waiting on the new N3 goggles for some light FPV but this is now also out of stock instantly. Keep well and nice bike
I've got a skydio 2 and i gotta say for $200 i'm super impressed with the neo. I love the idea of going in the opposite direction of the skydio. Super light, super cheap. My only complaint is better camera and maybe faster tracking on neo 2. But overall i love it.
Great video, also, do you know if the direction track speed was improved?
Nope, it was not better. I tried it as well, same suck as before.
@@Dcrainmakerthat’s a shame
Will there be a 4k video quality update?
I hope so but…I don’t think so. Write DJI as I did, they may do something if you complain
I had seen 35kph as a max speed but honestly quite impressed with the update
In FPV Manual.mode it does 16 m/s
57.6 KPH / 35.79 MPH
Of course it's not tracking doing this, but it proves there's additional capability to some extent.
Indeed. Never understood why sport mode with a regular controller (e.g. RC2 or N2) doesn't do the 57.6KPH just like every other drone. Seemingly an upsell push. Makes slightly more sense now with the new N3 Goggles being reasonbly priced, whereas before it was downright silly because nobody was gonna spend that much extra and not get the Avata 2 bundled with it (short of someone needing to stay under the 250g limit).
Great video Ray! Eagerly downloaded firmware, but still no 4k 25 fps! I guess I’m still stuck at 1080p 50 fps 😔.
Out of curiosity, why 25FPS for outdoor shooting? Totally get indoors for flicker reduction, but for outdoors (daytime), why not just go with 30FPS?
@@DcrainmakerMainly because I record my indoor talking head and all b-roll (usually also indoors) at 25 fps. So want to be able to drop in Neo footage. It’s a shame because the Neo is brilliant for more interesting b-roll!
Yes - if just shooting something for social media - and not splicing with anything else, 30 fps outdoors is fine.
Can shoot slow motion video with neo? From India
If you use 1080p 60fps, then yes (you'd need to slow it in post)
"Little buddy.. little buddy?"
Does this drone in follow mode also have the ability to take pictures at some time interval instead of recording video?
Thanks for this! Now I can go full attack on the rollerskis and the cross country skis, without worrying about losing that little bastard :)
Are you testing the Amazfit T-Rex 3?
Yup, on my wrist in the video.
An issue I have found while mountain biking, is that it doesnt like to reduce its altitude. This is a major issue with steep trails, it just maintains the height of when it was activated and very soon ends up in the treetops as the rider goes down!
Hmm, you’re seeing that today with Neo? I haven’t had that happen on any of my descents.
Can it do 25fps now?
@dcrainmaker Which helmet are you wearing during this video?
It's the Canyon HighBar helmets: www.canyon.com/en-es/gear/clothing/helmets/
7:09 Commentator's curse
Hi, how to use the vertical video option?
Thanks for the detailed testing and for the good news, yes I suppose it was too much to ask for DJI to mention the actual speed in the release notes ! Talking of which they don't say anything about improving tracking so I wonder if the "Direction Track" now works at anything faster than walking speeds for SideTrack and Dolly equivalents to the Hover drones.
Crazy situation for customs ! So DHL have made no attempt to contact you and tell you what was needed to get the drone out of customs ?! It's likely they're not happy with the "paperwork" provided by Hover but that's fixable...provided a fee called VAT is paid ;-)
Sadly, the direction track is the same. I had included it in the video/shooting, but cut it out as was trying to keep things moving along. Same-same though. As for DHL, yeah, I've contacted them, they've contacted me, and supposedly they're now waiting on customs themselves to respond. Supposedly.
@@Dcrainmaker Bad news for "Direction Track", hopefully they'll fix it at some point...Good luck with customs !
Those customs are a rainmaker lol
Hahaha
This is a much better speed for tracking a mountain biker (except in the faster downhills). But with extra speed comes extra crashability.
Bro I think you have a thing about having your gear ran over first your drone by Radom lady then you go and run over your phone😢 love vid
😂
Can you try without dji neo' s protections?
Not sure I understand? What protections - the prop guards? You can't take off the side ones, only the top ones, and in my past testing, it made no difference. Unlike some drones where prop guards limit speeds, this speed limit is electronic/software in nature - not prop driven.
If you run for an hour at 7-8 mph how long does it go before it dies
Roughly 12-14 mins.
"Did DJI list what the tracking speed was in the release notes ? Of course not that would have been useful" 🤣
However 32-ish km/h is a pretty big jump and makes it much more usable for general cycling 👍
I bought a Neo and sent it back. My issue was not the following but the mode where you walk/run towards it and it's supposed to stay in front of you. It always ended up behind me within a few seconds unless I walked at funeral procession pace. For me, that mode just doesn't work and surely we're going to get pretty bored with endless videos of the back of people's heads.
I almost wish this was $30-$50 more expensive and they added that to make it just a bit faster, maybe would fix all the issues.
They updated the FW.. direction track works 100% perfectly for me. Long experience WITH DJI products has taught many of us that they WILL get promised features to work. They diligently stay at it until everything works as advertised.
@@toadlguya Neo Pro with obstacle avoidance sensors and faster stable tracking would be ideal 👌🏽
Direction Track works perfectly for you? Like others, I can't get it mroe than either walking pace, or..well...that's it. Even after today's update, no luck.
@@Dcrainmaker I saw a guy do a demo. Keep is, for turns make them gradual, and medium/FAR distance Close wants to trim your eyebrows.
Yeh. Nah. Going to stick with my Hover X1 Pro for my bike adventures. I’ve had it easily tracking me at over 40kph (not that I usually ride above 32-35kph which is easy cruise speed for the Hover) and it folds away neatly in my jersey pocket
i use neo in my vlogs
The full screen button doesn’t appears for me after update. I am the only one ? (iPhone)
It worked for me, obviously, need to turn phone sideways, but did test it out.
@
After Restore work for me too 👍
Thanks
I just ordered a Mini 3 Pro yesterday based on the tracking speed on the Neo being far too slow for mountain biking.
DJI then release an update to increase the tracking speed on the Neo within hours of making my far more expensive purchase😆
Oh well, I’m sure I’ll have fun with the Mini 3 Pro 🤙🏽
The image quality of your drone does worth it, it’s much better
@@ricarmig Indeed, very much better.
Not to mention object avoidance.
Problem is you need a remote to fly any of the Minis at this point. Mine has been sitting in its box for over a year now as the remote is not convenient for my cycling adventures - I started using a Hover X1 instead and now upgraded to X1 Pro due to its speed (over 40kph) and ability to handle higher winds
The update works really well! But the image quality and noise still remain horrible 😅
@@SupersonicTraveller True on all accounts
@Supersonic Traveller. I find the video quality of the Neo very acceptable. With a little enhancing and editing I get good video results. See also my comment about the Neo video quality as reaction to the comment of Dcrainmaker 😀
@@Dcrainmakerif you can give feedback to DJI, tell them the Neo needs asap:
- manual image control even without a remote
- more manual settings as flat profile, noise reduction off/low/normal and the same for contrast
- much more love in the low light algorithms
With the sharpness on -2 and EV -0.3 or -0.7, with good light the image is quite usable! But as soon as it gets to bigger contrasts or lower light, it’s as bad as a 10 year old phone. I think they need to review and take more time optimizing it, it could get much better.
@ with a little editing - I agree. And for social media, like Instagram it is perfect. But this drone is definitely not for a full-screen video.
It really doesn’t like chasing you into the sun. Well that was pre update.
Seems same-same post update. :/
It's a camera, have you not experienced sun strike while driving a car? No different with the drone.
@@gregb1599 ...and yet no other drones have this problem to the same degree...
@Dcrainmaker I disagree "all" cameras and eyes do not like direct contact with the sun, while others may react differently with the software to overcome being blinded they all are still blinded.
Awesome, i’ve been in the process of moving. I didn’t know that they released a new update. Amazing. I love this drone, especially for the $200 price tag but I do love my Hover air max. It works very well but a lot more expensive.👍🏽💯
Is the video quality still this bad???
Yes
Any news on the HoverAir X1 Pro Max?
Should have seen the video till the end :P
🤣
I hate TH-cam adverts
If you pay for TH-cam Premium (or whatever they call it these days), those goes away. Else, it straight-up lets me buy drones, then spend time on rabbit holes like this. Or, you just end up with all the other sponsored videos from DJI.
Oeh, another “Oh nee” video 😂
So much oh nee!
The problem is, who wants to watch footage of a drone robotically following someone? So boring.
I don't get the use case for this product.
Nobody (well, almost nobody) is sitting there watching footage of tracking for 15 mins. Instead, as with almost everything in the action cam/drone space (or even your phone), people use it for snippets of b-roll.
The ability to fly without needing a true controller (albeit limited) easily makes it DJI’s most versatile/portable drone, and now with the N3 Goggles it’s perfect for anyone interested in getting into FPV at a cheaper price point
