      Yea, I mentioned a bit more about your harvest and that you tried the boards on the last big one, but that got edited out. I had to take this video down from 42 minutes to under 30!! It was an editing nightmare. I really like fume boards. I’ve used them exclusively now for at least 6 years. But with this lift, I think I will try a few bee escapes. Beetles were not bad this season so far. I went back to soil drenching with permethrin. Plus we had a good, cold winter.

      Hello there Bug Farmer. Yea, I watch a lot on the TV and don’t comment all the time. I just watched your latest last night. Queen issues really show themselves when we start looking through the supers. Hopefully they’ll be all bulked up and healthy for winter so you can get back after it next season. We were short on honey last year due to queen issues, that’s why I decided to finally change up my splits this season and hedge my bets with queen cells and learning to graft. It paid off so far, but sometimes I’ve just had those crazy seasons like you experienced. I know you kept the face for the camera, but I also know the frustrations once the camera was off. I got so frustrated at times last season, but we learn a whole lot from those seasons.

    G'Day Mike. Good move getting a lifter now. Lifting honey boxes by hand wrecks your back no matter how strong you are and then its too late. I have the B2 and B3 models and uneven sandy ground to work on. So I have to put a strap around when I lift, to stop the load rocking backwards like you showed, because it feels like it could tip it over. Hasn't done so yet! Time will tell.
    PeterD in Western Australia where it seems to have rained almost every day this winter!

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there Peter and thanks for commenting! I figure if I stay with fume boards, I won’t even lift more than two at a time, possibly three. Just not enough fumes strength to evacuate four supers. But with bee escapes I can see four being lifted. I think a quick strap would be a safe bet. Boris actually watched the video and gave me some pointers on lifting without dropping after he saw my awkwardness. In the end I am very pleased with the purchase. I agree on the back issues and I am at the ‘too late’ point in my back. Hurt it many years ago in the military, so saving what I have is essential. I am also looking forward to using it for loading doubles and singles for relocation. It will be a great tool all around I believe. Well, hope the rain lets up down under and thanks for commenting from abroad!! I suppose still being winter over your way and you’ll be gearing up for the season in no time.

      Hello Matthew. Rain is actually hurting us at this point. Flow was great and still have about a dozen more supers to pull but had to hold off for constant and daily rain. But that’s fine, it broke up extracting into three events doing about 15 to 20 boxes per extraction in three extractions. Helps when you’re by yourself. Thanks for stopping back through, glad all is well at the farm.

    Work smarter, not harder….that thing looks great Mike. Probably a little temperamental to use, but works fine if you do your part. I pulled 28 supers the last couple days and one of those would’ve been NICE!

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used it again today. I really like it and the temperamental part it correct. I'm getting better but have learned that the stands need to have good ground in front or back, wherever they're being lifted from and no obstacles. Had a hive stand failure today that I used it on and the boards the stand was one prevented me from getting a grab. And my little handles and the front handles make it tough. But I'll refine that with time and I can grab them if I take my time and work it slower. I was able to pull all 22 and then two more today without lifting a one. I also moved a double deep with no issues except the boards under the stand. It saves your back, just a bit slower overall. But that's a good trade off for me. Got about 10 more to pull when we get a break in the weather and I hope to really be a lot smoother. Brought it by Mr. Ed's today and he loved it too.

      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a vented jacket and I hate it. In this humidity with no breeze it’s way hotter for me and it’s heavier. I actually had to use it the other day because this one needed washing and I was miserable. Just don’t care for how thick they are versus the little bit of air I get. And in the summer around here, there’s barely any wind. The non vented is actually very thin and I stay cooler. But the humidity these last couple of weeks is so high, it’s probably a percent or two below actual rain...lol!! So I’m going to be soaked no matter what. Now in the early spring, the vented jacket was nice when the breeze was strong. Thanks for the comment and for watching!! Glad to see you’re comment, haven’t noticed any from you in a while.

    Mike, it looked like to me that the front wheels could be made a little wider to make it more stable side to side. what do you thing. Also I use a fume board too and if you lift one or two supers at a time and blow the bees straight down out of the boxes on to the ground I think that should work. Will that cart lift the boxes high enough to put supers in the back of a F250 pickup truck?

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charles, it's actually pretty steady. He custom makes a model that has a wider wheel base for grabbing boxes from the side. But any wider I think would require a beefier axle. But it would help. I did try what you suggested, but edited it. But what I found was with the weight, when I lowered the boxes in front of the entrance, the weight caused it to set on the ground. So then I rested it on the landing board and blew them down. That worked ok, but it was just kind of unsteady like that. So I just tried the tools that created a gap and did what you saw over the hive. Two to three supers was manageable for the fume board in some cases, two supers worked best, and 4 was just too many to try to fume and blow. I am going to try some bee escapes next year and just watch closely for beetles. Beetles have not been bad this year, but I also went back to ground drenching with permethrin. Thanks for the thoughtful insight. We think alike!!

    • @charlesthomas5737
      @charlesthomas5737 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeBarryBees I watched the inventors video and it shows the lift holding the boxes up in the air with out the operator holding on to the lift so you can put a bee escape on the hive or for me to be able to under super the honey boxes. I would think that it would be capable of holding two supers while you blow the bees out. is your problem holding the boxes up because of your handles are not letting the boxes go all the way back to the upright rest bars? I like this lift, like you I find the boxes are getting heavy and having no help

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@charlesthomas5737 yes, that is correct on the video, and that’s what had me thinking exactly like you on blowing them from out front. But in order for them to stay lifted, the load has to be high up like in the video. The way the center of gravity works with the lift, the higher the load, the less weight on the rear and the easier it is to handle. You can actually use one hand and move it side to side and even roll it on smooth ground when the load is way up high out in front. But then when you lower it, the weight shifts more forward and it takes a whole lot more effort to steady it. I was doing standard forklift practices and lowering the load once off the hive. You know, keeping the load lower when moving and no unnecessary heights. Well, I figured out that with this lift, you keep the load high and it’s easier to roll and maneuver. Had my wife rolling two full supers with one hand that way. Well, when it’s high enough to balance, it’s too high to reach with the blower. Once the load comes further down, it then becomes front heavy and will not balance and will rock nose down. I could also just use a step stool though. I haven’t given up on that suggestion, just really getting used to it and learning it. Have about 10 more to get next door if the weather will ever let me, and I plan to do more experimentation.

    • @charlesthomas5737
      @charlesthomas5737 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MikeBarryBees Mike keep making more videos about the new bee lift and really give it a good evaluation of the lift and all the pros and Cons. I am interested in maybe getting one. do you think the main wheels are big enough in diameter so they will roll over the ground easy.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@charlesthomas5737 I will. I just edited another video. I had a bit of an issue with being able to get right up to the stand. You have to be able to get right up to it. As far as the wheels, I was concerned about that when I ordered it, but they did very well over the ground. Even in muddy ground. In the video I just did, I was rolling through very deep weeds and grass over soft ground and the wheels did great. I rolled it about 30 yards to the truck over a grassy and bumpy area as well, and it was fine. I will be using it again soon. The builder watched my video and gave tips for hooking into the boxes, but I had already made the next video before I read them. But other than the ground needing to be pretty level and unobstructed directly in front of the stands, so far it does very well. I’ll keep reviewing it though. The only true issue I’m having is grabbing my homemade boxes due to the handle issue is showed. And that’s on me, not the lift. I will master that and redesign my handles though.

  • @kalebrivers5260

    Sounds like you don't run a barrier system against AFB.
    here in west Australia the feral bees spread it continually .ive burnt two or three over the last two years. Letting bees rob is a recipe for one day loosing the whole apiary and all the hives within 3 km and on and on. ...Just a thought.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, we don’t have anything like that here in my area. AFB isn’t prevalent in our zone and even so, there are a lot of feral bees here. I couldn’t see a way to prevent robbing should a colony die out. Even up north where there tends to be more AFB present, I’ve never heard of running a barrier from those beekeepers. We just register our hives and make sure to be vigilant with inspections. I am actually more concerned with the beekeepers that are newer and refuse to register their hives and won’t report problems the the state apiarist. Those are the real threat. If they get a case and no one knows before they allow it to spread, that could cause a lot of issues due to them know knowing what they have.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can’t see that hurting the brood or the queen. It would be way worse if the queen was allowed to stay in the super. If there is any brood or eggs and the queen in in the super, I’ve actually seen her hang on after the bower and make it into the honey house. Actually has happened to me twice. Plus, that’s why I created the gap with the tools so that the full force of air does go through to the brood box. I let it go down there a couple times, but even so, it’s not that powerful of a blower. The brood and the queen will be fine. But, never hurts to be cautious either. To each there own. And a week before the big canoe trek, the wife and I spent some time in Bemidgi. We sure love your state.

      @@MikeBarryBees It sounds like you had a good time again. Northern MN is an outdoors person's paradise. I live 250 miles south in corn country where we don't get snow we get sn-irt. mix of snow and blowing soil from all the sugar beet fields. 100 miles due west of MSP.

      You might be surprised. Once the load is in the sweet spot, it is way more stable than I thought it would be, and easy to push.

      Yea, it can get ugly and if there is any weakness, they’re very vulnerable when the flow is over. Sorry about the losses.
