Hi Gary, I was hoping you could point me in the right direction. My project is a 2001 330i. It has a ZF 5hp19. I just rebuilt the engine and everything works great with no engine codes. The transmission seems to work properly also. I drove the car 100 miles then a leak developed. I took the trans out and am having a difficult time locating the leak. I believe it is the trans but am not sure because the fluid colors are similar between the engine and trans. I will know more once I remove the flywheel to inspect the rear main. This vehicle has 111,000 miles on it and I am going to rebuild the trans while I have it out as a precaution so I don't have to pull it again anytime soon. I am going to replace the following items. New pump, updated reverse drum, all gaskets, seals, molded pistons, frictions without steels, plastic pump tubes, updated Transgo regulator valve, updated f bushing which depends if I have the early or late style and torque converter. In your opinion, should i replace all the bronze bushings? How can I tell if I have an early or late style F bushing? Is there something I should replace that I haven't listed? Any advice on my project that will keep me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
These transmissions like to leak from the front, i would go with a new body and gears. I would also replace the F drum, the sleeve moves and will cause the trans to slip when hot. I would also go with a rebuilt converter. The bushings are generally ok, you may not have to change those. Go with an OE filter as well. The 3 main problem areas of this trans is the pump, F drum and the D/G drum(reverse). looks like you got everything else covered. Do you have a source for parts?
I am still looking for a source for the converter, rebuild kit and F drum. I also could use the selector shaft that hangs out the side for changing gears. I already purchased the pump, updated reverse drum and bushing kit. I am open to any source info. Thanks for advising me on my project.
Hi Gary, Do you think there is a correlation between runaway pressure (aka worn out VB bore) and the pump bushing issue? If not, what do you think causes that and how do you prevent the same problem from reoccurring? Thanks in advance.
@@IoanPau you have to remove the valvebody, then you could try to get the pump out, if there is a problem with the bushing or seal, i recommend installing a new pump body and gears, it comes with new bushing and seal. Hi gary I have a gear monitoring 4 code I replaced the f clutch but I still have the same problem I checked the sleeve bushing and everything is ok where can I direct myself to now?
Gary, I have the same exact transmission in my 2006 BMW 330i e90 sedan with 208k miles on it and the only problem i really have is rough downshift from 2-1 occasionally. I am planning to replace all the solenoids and purchase the sonnax zip kit and rebuild the valvebody. Since my transmission seems to be in pretty good shape i am debating whether is should do a full rebuild of the transmission by replacing all the bushing (what you are doing in this video) and replace the clutch packs just as a preventative maintenance. Do you think im wasting money with replacing the clutch packs and bushings? I am not having any clutch slippage that i am aware of..
Clutches do wear out and sometimes flake as well, with that amount of miles i would put new clutches in, check your F drum, make sure the sleeve did not move. Question, how are your engagements into drive and reverse are they harsh as well?
@@GaryFerraro Shoot I just realized that this video is on the zf5hp19, my transmission is the zf6hp19...would the same thing apply to my transmission? Hi there, great video! I am trying to rebuild my 5HP19 transmission and I can't find in the transmission rebuild manual the oil pump gears clearance in order to determine if my oil pump is in good condition. Do you happen to have that information?
Hi gary, I'm rebuilding a 5hp19 for my sisters '05 Passat tdi. It spun the pump bushing, luckily the previous owners stopped driving it the moment they noticed fluid dripping. I was interested in ordering parts from you or your supplier, I know at the very least I need and overhaul kit torque converter and pump. I would like to replace the frictions while I'm in there too(even though they don't look too bad on this trans). I believe my F clutch drum bushing is in good shape based on your vid about that. The D/G drum looks good too, although I understand that thing is sort of a time bomb if its not the updated one? is there and updated part number for that D/G drum so I could tell if mine is the newer one? Looking forward to your response, thanks!
Greats vids Gary. I have this 6hp19 and I am getting a 2-1 thud or kick after driving on highway for a while. What could it be? I know u mentioned dampers in mechatronic can cause harsh engagement and disengagement. Have no errors and otherwise trans work great. Thx
This could be a couple of things, its usually either worn bushings or solenoid issues, have you checked the fluid level in the trans? if its full you may want to try a shift adapt reset and see how that works
Gary Ferraro thanks for answering my question. I just did a drain and fill along with bridge seal but not the 4 tubes and also reset the adaptions. The 2-1 thud starts only after highway driving. If bushings are worn, will it get progressively get bad until transmission dies or it is just a small nuisance? Thx again. Really cools vids, I just watch them with a cup of coffee. 😀

I didn't play with the VB, only replaced the regulator valve (fix from kit). Solenoids checked out correct voltage resistance. What else can I look for?
ok, so in reverse, the B clutch and D clutch are only on in reverse, you may have to drop out the valve body and air check the clutch packs to see if one of them are leaking

Gary Ferraro I have not. seems kinda a tricky do I have to let the car and trans warm up? do you think buying a Tc and transmission from a yard is any good?
You will need a lift to check the fluid. Very possible you have a leak, i would check that first and if it is low, fill it to see if the slipping goes away. Im sure a used trans is not cheap for this car. Where are you located?
Hi Garry, I have E46 325i 2002 with almost 150K KM.. I have problem with the transmission. Yes Gary its happened when the car is hot. Always happened after drive 13 to 20 KM. I tried to avoid using D drive as shifting gear faster from gear 2 to gear 3 when speed approach 40 KM/h and it goes to slip in gear 4.

Ticking noise is gone away but, now I have 0 gears, no fluid flow through the trans cooler lines and a P0720 Stall monitoring code. I have taken the pump apart. gears look good and the teeth that engage the torque converter are not damaged. I'm at my whits end I can't find anything physically wrong with any of the parts. I get a reading of 265 ohms (book I have on the valve body 292 - 358 ohms is the limits) but the book also says the TSS should be the same but im getting over 6 Mohms. Even tried a new wiring harness and get the same readings with a new TSS and OSS. I'm not sure what could cause no flow when I know the pump is working..

hey i have an e46 325ci it goes forward very slowly and its slipping and i have trans warning on the dash but it runs great on reverse gear what do you think is the problem?
I am rebuilding a version of this trans. Audi 5hp19FLA Quattro. I am at the front transfer unit which houses 3 large meshing gears. One goes through the long shaft of the trans, and has a bearing and thick shim. Second has a shorter shaft and a big spring that goes on before the gear is placed on. my question is, the spring forces the gear to set higher up (1/2") than the other two gears. once you tighten the housing, does that force the gear into place by compressing the spring? also what is the torque for that housing screws. Thanks.
If this is a quattro, there are double seals in one of the gears and also in a housing, these seals will now leak, new ones need to be installed and if it's not perfect, it will leak. I send the housing and the gear out to a ZF shop to knock the seals in for me and when you slide the gear into place (the one that takes the double seal) put something over the spline like a finger of a rubber glove to protect the seal or it will leak, Very very important to do it that way. Where are you located? I believe i torque those housing bolts down to 15 to 20 foot pounds
@@GaryFerraro I am in Detroit Michigan USA. I replaced both double seals. One inside the trans main housing that the front drive shaft goes through and the other one that goes on the back with the three meshing gears. I see what you mean about the front drive shaft going through the double seal with having some protection , (latex finger) to protect the splines. With the three meshing gears on the back, am I correct that the one with the large spring makes the gear sit up higher than the other two and that by tightening it up, it compresses the spring? Over a 1/2" higher. thanks for your help
@@bigshott9117 Yes, then the housing will pull it down. If those seals are not perfect, oil will leak through the weep hole, i send them to a shop that has special tools to knock them in so they stop right where they should. You can push the gear down with the spring correct?
@@GaryFerraro I will check when I get home, but the spring is about 1 1/2" in dia. Very strong. I'll see how much force it take to bottom it out . Thanks
@@GaryFerraro an Aha moment. I knew the spring was too far away to be compressed, so I looked for other things that might be in the way. On the inside of the trans is a plastic rotation sensor? It reads the points on a gear as it rotates. I undid the screw and took the sensor out and immediately the gear dropped down and there was just a little spring compression left upon tightening the front transfer case. That problem is solved. but that little black plastic sensor probably had a spacer in it so that it would just read the spinning gear, without that spacer, the sensor went too far in the hole and stopped the spinning gear from dropping down. Now I need a spacer. I guess I can measure and make one. wonder if you knew the thickness? Also, the double seal in the taller mesh gear, (ZF 0734319 604), I think that is the one you are referring to. where can one be purchased? I am getting close thanks to you.
In my place the mechanics will just change the input shaft seal, without replacing the whole pump, i geuss thats why it will be broken after just 10-25k kms after overhaul

Thanks for advising me on my project.
where are you located?
Augusta, GA
ok, i may be able to hook you up with my supplier here in NY and he could ship you the parts if needed.
Hi Gary, Do you think there is a correlation between runaway pressure (aka worn out VB bore) and the pump bushing issue? If not, what do you think causes that and how do you prevent the same problem from reoccurring? Thanks in advance.
pump bushing issue really is just from normal wear and tear
Would this be technically the same for a 986 2002 Boxster 2.7l transmission?
Not sure what the 996 is but i just ran year, make, model and engine size through shopkey pro and come up with the ZF5HP19, is yours RWD

@@GaryFerraro yes, I was wandering if possible to change it without dismantle the hole thing out?
@@IoanPau you have to remove the valvebody, then you could try to get the pump out, if there is a problem with the bushing or seal, i recommend installing a new pump body and gears, it comes with new bushing and seal. The way this is set up is there is a clutch pack on the pump stator, this will come out with the pump, to reinstall, may have to pull front of the unit apart and reinstall everything at once
Hi gary I have a gear monitoring 4 code I replaced the f clutch but I still have the same problem I checked the sleeve bushing and everything is ok where can I direct myself to now?

what do you think the FLA trans weighs, 300lb?
sounds about right,
Gary, I have the same exact transmission in my 2006 BMW 330i e90 sedan with 208k miles on it and the only problem i really have is rough downshift from 2-1 occasionally.
And yes I do sometimes notice rough engagements when going in to D or R from P, or from R to D and vice versa especially when on a hill. But I heard that it just means that my flex plate is bad...or what would you think it's related to. Thanks for your reply!
I need to know how the parking prawl actuating rod is connected under the protective plate. Can you explain that? Does it just sit there or is it connected somehow?
There is a steel rod that goes through the parking pawl and a spring to hold it out of park

Hi there, great video! I am trying to rebuild my 5HP19 transmission and I can't find in the transmission rebuild manual the oil pump gears clearance in order to determine if my oil pump is in good condition. Do you happen to have that information?

Gears do look in nice shape, pump bushing look good too?
I could hook you up with my supplier, where are you located?

Ok thanks Gary!
Hey gary, I sent you an email a couple of days ago. It may have gone to your junk folder. Just sent another one today
It may get worse as time goes on and the car is driven, if it does start to get worse maybe try a set of solenoids. How many miles on the car?
Gary Ferraro Car has 203k miles and problem started about 10k miles ago. Drained fluid was very clean. I’m definitely thinking about new solenoids. No code of any kind though. Thx again
When you do that i would also change out the pan/filter as well
Hi Mr Ferraro congratulations¡ your videos are awesome¡¡ can you upload a 2002 isuzu rodeo tranny overhaul??
That should be a 4L30E, i have a teardown video on that , its out of a BMW
Hello Gary, I need your help. I have a 2001 bmw 330 zf5hp19. I replaced all clutches, seals and replaced the two drums at the rear of the transmission. Still slips in reverse. I didn't play with the VB, only replaced the regulator valve (fix from kit). Solenoids checked out correct voltage resistance. What else can I look for?
Forward gears are fine?
Gary Ferraro yes now they are. Before the rebuild all gears would slip with half throttle.
ok, so in reverse, the B clutch and D clutch are only on in reverse, you may have to drop out the valve body and air check the clutch packs to see if one of them are leaking
Gary Ferraro got it fixed, I had a bad connection at the solinoid. Thank you for your video and your response!
Hello Gary. Great video, could I get a contact for you? I have the ZF 5hp19 in 2003 BMW 330i, it makes a thud from 3rd to 4th or 4th to 3rd while warmed up and throws a P0734 code (4th gear ratio). I would like to get it rebuilt. What is your location?

Gary are you still active on here? I currently have a passat with this same trans leaking from bellhousing but I can’t tell if it’s the seal inside the pump when looking at the face of the pump. Or if it’s my “input shaft seal” that sits behind the welded TC collar on back of the TC
The common issue with the leak is the pump bushing spins causing a leak from the front seal
Gary Ferraro is it safer to say that the seal that sits behind the TC collar (backside facing and is inserted into trans and trans pump?
The bushing is the metal seal with a open face? Just trying to understand as I can’t very well tell where or how to pull apart the seal
Gary Ferraro if it is the pump bushing then I would need a whole new SF trans pump then
awesome video, i believe I have the same transmission in a 04 awd passat it has been slipping for a while especially if I'm on the throttle making a turn, the last couple days I heard a loud noise I went to ammco they told me my possible torque converter fail they would need take apart whole transmission $4600. any ideas on what I should do can't really afford another car at the moment or have anything close to 4k. Thanks.
408skills. From what your saying slipping on a turn sounds like its low on fluid. Have you checked the fluid level?
Gary Ferraro I have not. seems kinda a tricky do I have to let the car and trans warm up? do you think buying a Tc and transmission from a yard is any good?
You will need a lift to check the fluid. Very possible you have a leak, i would check that first and if it is low, fill it to see if the slipping goes away. Im sure a used trans is not cheap for this car. Where are you located?
Hi Garry, I have E46 325i 2002 with almost 150K KM.. I have problem with the transmission. Using the steptronic when selected n M 3 its automativally shift to gear M 4 and M 5 after that I got trans warning (gearbox symbol). I have scan and get error message 049 Symptom Gear Check, 054 Gear Check, and Gear Check 4 (ENP). I have watched your Gear Monitoring Video and I came to conclusion I have to replace F Drum. Please advise, thanks
Does this happen when the car is hot?
Yes Gary its happened when the car is hot. Always happened after drive 13 to 20 KM. To overcome this situation before I decided to overhaul this transmission I use steptronic with max select on M 2 with max speed up to 60 KM/h. I tried to avoid using D drive as shifting gear faster from gear 2 to gear 3 when speed approach 40 KM/h and it goes to slip in gear 4.
Sounds like F clutch drum sleeve moved

I have a 2002 Audi A4 with the ZF519. I am experiencing harsh down shifting from 5th to 4th gear after the transmission has reached operating temp. when slowing down and sometimes from N to D or N to R. Its normal when accelerating or shifting in manual when increasing speed. Any ideas or thoughts.
ok so just to confirm, the 3-4 upshift is ok, you don't feel any slip when the car is hot?
Hey Gary I have the same transmission. I’ve started to notice my rpm dropping then a couples days later I started to heard a noise it sounded like an air leakage but I could not find the problem. Then on the next day my car would not go anywhere then the gear light came on. I pulled three codes P0741 P0734 P01732. Do you think if I do a rebuild that would fix my problem??
If the car does not move, have you checked the oil level, the pumps in these units always go bad and may leak out the fluid

Found i left out a shim between the B and C clutches. Removed trans put the shim in and put everything back together. Other searches show me that the DTC has usually been the Output speed sensor.
Giving the 720 code because the car is not moving, so this did not take the second fill? The 2nd fill is with the engine running
Gary Ferraro correct. Filled trans, started car and ran thought the gears. Went to top off fluid. Original Fluid level did not drop.
Immediately started flowing out the fill hole
