- In this video, i go over another common problem with the 5HP19 transmission, which is no reverse due to a blown D/G Drum. The top of the drum blows off causing the no reverse condition. The snap ring groove has been redesigned to help prevent breaking.

I'm currently struggling to rebuild my ZF5HP19... On my E39 BMW...
I'm pretty sure the new pump I bought is bad because the TQ makes a grinding sound and I get really bad vibrations from the transmission even when I'm in park if I give it gas/ apply throttle while in park... I don't know how to proceed.
Hi Garry! My TC on my E46 with 5hp19 started leaking so I am now doing all the research needed, so I just need to ask you if the components from a 5hp18 that I have left from a parts car are interchangeable with the 5h19. The 5hp18 was from a 323i e36 and my e46 is a 323 as well. I am aware of the fact that they are exactly similar, but maybe some components are the same?

Our friends have Passat B+ 2004 and transmission 5HP19 (FAV code) and same problem with No Reverse.

Hello, can you give me a tip? My BMW 530i E34 uses 5HP18. When I have a vehicle on a steep descent, or when I accelerate too hard, it disengages. I can only walk 3rd with the winter button selected. reverse does not work, or other gears work until you enter flat ground. It doesn't make noises like it lacks oil or goes into emergency, it doesn't show errors on the TCM. oil and filter were changed and the level checked. is correct. help please!!
How does that drum get so worn/damaged? Is it from slamming it into reverse while still rolling forward?

My comment about the bolt pattern didn’t show up in regards to the 5HP19 FLA if there’s another transmission the same bolting pattern that has more gears
I have a 2005 4 runner with the 5 speed 6 cly eng. 4x4
I had dirty smelly fluid and flushed it, rusty lines and changed them with same sized rubber lines for transmission use, and added an oil cooler. reverse does not work, it will work in 4 lo a bit. Goes forward fine in all gears, but in reverse in 2wd will hardly move at all, there are some noises at times. I was thinking something with the brakes, like if I over tightened the caliper bolts when I did the brakes at the same time, or if E brake was catching. but seems to roll backward ok... so 4 low have some reverse weak, but in 2wd very little to no reverse

How many drums are that transmission?
I have an e46 328ci and in the morning the reverse does not enter, only when it is already hot the car works normally, what can it be?
The B clutch and the D clutch are on in reverse, may have a problem with a clutch pack, Forward no problems? Any codes?

I have the same trans and i rebuilt it months ago. It worked very well but after some miles it began to leak. The leak was so bad that almost half of the oil leaked out. I rebuilt the oil pump to because it went bad and the converter was changed. What do you think is the problem
Was the leak from the front? the bushing spun?
@@GaryFerraro i havent it disassembled yet so i am not really sure about. But is there a chance that the oil is coming from somewhere else? The thing is the reason for the rebuild was the broken pump and when it broke there came oil out but not that much like now.
@@Luca-fq9cd is it possible the pump was too worn to have been rebuilt? Clearances might be too great.
@@CubasAutomotive no the bushing had a good tight (not too tight) fit
Think will collect drumparts from in there and put them together on table to ensure nothing is left inside,if happens to me.Thank you.

Hi Gary, have you vacuum tested pressure valve in the valve body? Could be worn.

@@GaryFerraro just asking, have never seen not worn... Probably because of mileages, never checked them when they were young :)
That might be a problem also, lots of blown drums on these units
Hi Gary, great video. I had same issue on my BMW e46 zf5hp19. i changed the blown D/G drum and build everything up by the book and reverse doesnt work anyway. I RE check everything again except valvebody. could the fault be in the valvebody?
Never came across a valvebody issue for reverse, Question does the car move forward in Neutral or is Neutral ok?
Every gear works normal and it doesn't move on neutral, also I tested solenoids and they work fine.
@@user-je4dd4xt6r You may have a problem with the B clutch, may have to drop out the valvebody and air check the D clutch to confirm that is ok
What about a delay before it goes into reverse only in the morning? Once warm its fine.
have you checked fluid level? drive is ok? no delay?

What do you think is the cause? drum F?
Yes, is it ok cold and not ok hot?

@@GaryFerraro I Checked carefully, i've had a look at the F clutch drum and checked for wear on the sleeve but it looks good, i think the cause is teflon rings... Thank you very much!
@@giapham3384 are you sure the sleeve did not move out of place and the teflon ring cannot seal

Thank you for the demonstration video. It was perfect to help DIY 'ers like myself. Would you happen to know what would make the car think its in 4th gear? Car will not start because of that.
Neutral switch on the side of the trans maybe bad.

Hi , i have a bmw 730d e38 , the gearbox i think is 5hp24 and when it is warm it give me 2 shocks when i put it in R , in D it shift all the gears well .i scan it with all diagnose and no errors .
Well, there is nothing common to drive and reverse, different elements are applied, you may want to look elsewhere first, drive shaft, differential, maybe axles see if anything has play in it

@@GaryFerraro thanks for your reply 👍. I been researching online and it seems it is possible but I really didn't understand what is needed to be done for the swap to work. They were saying it needed to be reprogrammed and needed some types of adapters but I'm not sure if they actually know their stuff tho and I'm pretty ignorant when dealing with complicated stuff on cars lol
@@jojo-vc6qe well the 5hp19 has an external tcm while the 6hp19 has the tcm inside the transmission, so on the 6hp19 only powers,grounds and communication lines are external wires

Lowering the exposure on the camera will work wonders so one doesn't have to worry bout time of day or back light

@@jackprick9797 Filters should only be OE, i would do converter too. There is a number on the converter should you choose to get a rebuilt one, they will need this number or just have yours done. Never got an e-mail from you
