I understand what Gareth Bale is saying, he is not anywhere near complaining about being an athlete but he's expressing himself towards the naysayers, the ones who think its okay to shame athletes whenever and however they can. The point here is that 99.99% of professional athletes do not see their career as a problem or something they do not enjoy... the problem here is that 99.99% of fans and critics have no idea what it takes to BE and LIVE as an athlete. Most people do not see whats behind the scenes, they just see the match days, the glamour and the hype. Fans and critics only wish to see perfection... as soon as there is ANY slight scratch of the surface towards a mistake or flaw --- they swarm you. Any pro athlete that would trade their career for a lifeless job working for someone else, is not a real pro because real pros are people who have consciously decided this is the path they have accepted: the sacrifice, dedication and all.. even if that means you are a lower level pro making no where near what other players make around the world. Let's be clear here; professional athletes are not victims nor do they project themselves as so... they are achievers... achievers at the highest level. But even achievers need to be understood!

Absolutely unbelievable video... By very very far your best, I've been following since 3 and half years now, back in your Germany days... I'm a 19 yo semi-pro player in England and this video almost made me cry because of how much it just perfectly described my situation, it's my 2nd year where I only play football and all you explained is my life. I live on my own in a tiny appartement, my parents are split and both live more then 1000 miles away from me (so it's even more difficult to see them), I lost a 3y relationship w my gf because she studies in another city, I only have 3 friends in my city... but as you said all of this is worth it. All of those sacrifices are fuel that nurish my dream, which is to play at the highest level possible, be a professional player because I just enjoy this to much. And I can only thank you for highlighting this and talking about ppl like me, it really helps me be even more convinced I'm doing the right thing !! You are missing the point. Of course being in a 9-5 job in an office can feel like being like a robot in a cubicle. Your boss tells you what to do and you have to do it. But you still (in most cases ) get your weekends off. You can still book a week off to go on holiday and you can still spent time with your family at Christmas and birthdays. Pro athletes cannot do that. I live in the UK and most premier league footballers either have to train or travel on Christmas Day, because there is always a fixture on Boxing Day . They play 3 games in 10 days over Christmas. It’s fair to say they won’t be eating too much turkey or mince pies !!
Byron G Footballers only train for like 4 hours a day maximum. They’re free for the rest of the day. A career in football is way more free than a regular career.

It's a hard choice. When I hung up my boots it was largely because I found out that there is always someone else out there that wants it more than you and you will HAVE to sacrifice. I had too many other dreams and couldn't half-ass my way to another contract. I appreciate the insight and breakdown you give.

Agree one hundred percent. It's true that when you feel like giving up, u look back to the number of people who wants to be in ur position. That keeps u going. The only thing holding me back is that I was born with a hip dysplasia and I'll be needing a hip replacement some time in the future. With that being said, I'm ready to sacrifice what ever to live a life of a pro.

Even though I'm not even the best in my city or school team I'm training fighting mentally and physically with my body parents teachers studies criticism failure rejection..I have been rejected 6/6times at trials...it's just what it is what gets me motivated is people like you and knowing that I'll have to sacrifice to become what I want...I did 22 individual training sessions in 19days because it was the summer break and I know I wouldn't get much
time to improve later because of school..so thanks for the motivation and opening our eyes to know how the real world is

This really touched me, Matt. I played all my life, but due to the fact that I wasn't able to land a pro contract a few years ago (had a semi-pro contract) I had to take a choice to go and find a regular job. Now I live well, but I'm unhappy trying to do my best to play again, even if it's just for a few coins until my body can't take it anymore. I know I'm close, I'm 26. I won't have this energy in 10 years. I won't be able to play the way I want to in 10 years. And the thing is that I really think, in the bottom of my heart, that even all I've been through, the effort it's worth it the minute a match starts. It's crazy. Those that are passionate to play this sport will understand. I look forward to keep watching your videos, keep working hard, man. Peace.

@@TMM-N This is a misconception. Mental health is something not talked about in football very much. And it's interesting because if you're happy and not depressed, you're going to play better, and feel free to express yourself on the pitch. A balance is crucial to this. At the pro level, you're get paid to win, to be as close to perfection as possible, that is immense pressure and takes a toll on you. Find something outside of football to ground you. Look at Ronaldo, puts in his work and goes home to his family and unplugs.

Great video. I still play at 54 years old because I love the game. I still work hard to make sure that I can play, even if it's just club games or pick ups at the park, and don't get paid a dime. Your insight is something people need to keep in mind as they criticize a player. I know how hard you work to make it happen. Kenny J. Rebollo it’s just that most of us have heard this jargon spewed over and over again. No disrespect but that’s the world of sport. Crying about the injuries the travel does not make sense. It’s part of the game. Plus the dude lives in the US, Vegas is like a 5 hr flight from most places and most hotels have gyms. Dude can rehab and spend time with his family. Some of us have been displaced since we were 18.
Justin Son you literally missed the whole point of his video then 🤦🏽♂️ and no, he can’t rehab and spend time with his family, the majority of professional footballers have to stay with the club so they can keep track of recovery progress, etc. Did you stop watching halfway through the video? You would’ve seen where he literally explains that. It’s not always as easy as buying a plane ticket and going. You don’t know what expenses he may have, what his finances are like, what goes on even further behind the scenes that you won’t see in the video. The video isn’t to complain about his life it’s to share the reality of a professional career to those that might be oblivious to the sacrifices and hardships that come when you are a professional footballer

I meant if the family has an outing in Vegas, what's stopping him from spending the weekend with them, when he clearly stays a few hours flight away, we see high profile players doing this all the time especially during rehab. Yes BUT with due respect, the most important thing I get from Mat's video here is how far we are willing to sacrifice of other important & necessary things in life.
For example, you do absolutely love playing soccer but at the same time you do feel really sad when you need to live alone far from family, missing important events of your love ones, or your partner wants to break up with you because she is not sure about the future of you and her due to LDR.
So I believe the WILLINGNESS to embace the consequences of your sacrifices are the number one factor to succeed rather than just deciding to do what you think you really love as your career.
I got that too but its a sacrifice cz i just love playing soccer i dont need a pro contract to play but how else am i going to do what i love and take care of my family so i understand the consequences of being a pro but i am willing
Honestly people need to stop praising every single thing Matt says... he is not right ALL the time. I understand that he speaks the truth and tries to explain how the pro life is as honestly as possible because I am also a pro player in a very similar situation as him and I definetly get where he is coming from when he speaks about the pro life because it is very true. Although sometimes he just comes off with negative thoughts and point of views that are just not helpfull in any way what so ever to tell to people who haven't been through the process yet. For example theres a part in this video where he is going through his thought process and he thinks to himself "i will keep working now because if I am lucky enough to play for a decade of pro soccer, I will be able to live a normal life then, after my career". That is just not a good thought process to share on here because there are alot of kids and teens seeing this who look up to him and try to copy him in every way possible to reach their goals, so that thought influences them in a very destructive way because there js no need for a player who just starter playing pro or semi pro to get near that thought process. some people actually dont worry about all the sacrifices they made some people just live life day by day and aren't worried about what they have lost in the past or what they sacrifice in the future or what they are missing out now. Some people just want to play and reach a higher level or be better version of themselves every single day due to the fact that they have very big goals futbol wise.

@@JDog129753 I get the point of the video. Matt is simply informing his younger fans about the realities of pro life. Thats great and I respect and appreciate his honesty. What you fail to understand is that I disagree with the prison analogy and with Matts overall message hes sending in this video. In a nutshell, sacrifices and loss of freedom are inevitable in any worthwhile career path, not just sports. Heck, it's a reality of being an adult in general. So complaining about not being able to go snowboarding and comparing that to prison is frankly just disrespectful. Matt should have done a better job at making it clear that despite all the sacrifice, it is worth it if you truly love the game. He didn't.
Great video brother. I am a young professional boxer I can relate. As a professional, you would think you have MORE freedom but really you don’t. You revolve your day around your training and when you’re not training you are studying or recovering or watching your diet. It is definitely a short career and at the end it is worth it wouldn’t choose a different lifestyle!

"looks to be having the time of his life". Important to note that it's just what he chooses to share on social media, he probably works about twice a day a lot of those days. It's probably his only vacation time right now aswell, then back to the grind. For him, with the money, fame, and titles, it is probably all still worth it though. You sacrifice some things to gain others.

workers go through this for less. I mean, that's the sacrifice. Think about soldiers. They put their life in for much less. So I think footballers are better off.
Soldiers are the only real example though tbh. Many workers work for less because there isnt any rarity or high demand for what they can do. If they acquired something that was unique and in demand then they'd get more. Simple as that.
Professuonal Footballers work hard to develop something you can't get with the hundreds of thousands maybe even millions of footballers worldwide. So they get what they're worth.

Keep up the hard work bro. It's tough to sustain that level of a proffesionlism especially in football. I know this due to being scouted to play for ODP (olympic development program) and made the U15 team all the way to U20 for the national team, and at such a young age I had to sacrifice so much and at the same time I had to keep a level headed mind and give it 110% I loved it, then hated it when I kept having the pressure, injuries, and missing my friends back at home. It is tough and I do feel for Gareth bale and now your situation due to experience. Keep fighting and when you no longer enjoy what you do, thats when you hang up the boots. Set certain goals and try your best to achieve them. Hang in there bro you are not alone! Great video btw!
Moral of the story - everyone has something to complain about, no matter your situation.. its relative. However big or small it is, its how you deal with it. Don't make excuse, change your mindset, change your outlook and it will change your life.

You know. I can't say how comforting that is to become aware of. Thank you dude. I think there are tens of thousands of us that needed to hear this one. Well put together, well articulated, maybe once you decide to hang up the boots consider becoming a coach, I have a funny feeling you would play to a strength you have yet to realize you have, and that is inspiring others. The effect of this varies but for young players full of hunger and ambition, you could very well be the catalyst to bring them several steps closer to their dreams.

Just found your channel-interesting video. Very well done. A few things that I’d share as a 43 year old, 4 year college player who didn’t play pro.
1. To succeed in business, medical school, law firm any vocation, it’s never just 9-5. The same work ethic you apply to the pitch you’ll bring to your next career.
2. When you finish playing you’ll have to start a career after others have started 10 years prior and will have more experience, money and authority than someone just starting-that will be a difficult transition for you-or anyone.
If your passion for the game and the sacrifices you are making aren’t leading to the compensation you want and the fulfillment you desire, rethink your current path.
Having said that during 4 years of college, I missed some parties, couldn’t skateboard (too close to campus), formals, weekends because of training, travel, games, lifting or study halls-yes. Rehab after an injury to work your way back to the starting 11 was lonely but I can say that within 12 months of graduation, playing in open leagues while establishing myself with my career, it was those times on the bus, playing, locker room, weight room, camaraderie, ups and downs that I missed more than anything.
Enjoy your ride-at some point you’ll be working 60+ hours a week, creating a new career and thinking about your family, retirement plans and savings, with a few weeks of PTO...missing all that soccer gave and took away.
Great video, Matt! Really important topic, because people need to be aware what is the reality of being a football player. It involves a lot of sacrifices, difficulties, pressure and etc.Also people don't see what happens behind the scenes and judge football players so much.Most of the time their judgement is not right and they don't understand what it takes to be playing at the professional level.

Guys play from their hearts, regardless leaving family behind at very tender ages. Americans leave the US and just can’t last even In Europe despite coming from a place that provides you with an abundance of resources. You only get to play the beautiful game for a limited amount of time, do your best, take it in the chin and soldier on. We can apply the complaints to most jobs. We’re all robots in one way or the other atleast you get to make money doing something you love..

Definitely a great video, and i can relate a a lot to what you're saying. Although it is very different in terms of what level you're playing at. I myself have been playing professional football in Denmark for 6 years now, and from my experience in the Danish Superliga, it is definitely not as robotic as you say, and this lifestyle is literally the dream.
Man, I don't know if you're ever going to see this message but man, I love seeing your videos. You are living the dream, and I'll continue to pray for you to continue to succeed. This business is crazy and you open the eyes to all this young guys. Man, all these young kids want to make it and some kids have talent but don't know the actual work that needs to go into it. This work is when you're by yourself, not in a pick up game. Those minutes when your by yourself trying to get better. I've told so many young kids, those are the ones that separate you. Great video Matt! Definitely have to make sacrifices but it goes with the profession just like a lot of pro sports or jobs that require 24/7 work! At the end of the day I think it’s all worth it especially if you enjoy it and you’re passionate about it!

Your editing, and overall production skills have progressed SO much. I agree with others that this your best video from a production standpoint. It has been an amazing journey to follow, and I am sure you have great things coming. At 33 I can tell you that the last 15 years zoomed by, the only thing that's important to you has to be football and you must be able to enjoy all parts of it. The moment you have second thoughts about things like practice, gym or nutrition then it's pretty much over for your career because you mentally checked out.

Hi Matt. Long time fan. First time commenting. Had a tough time with the most recent video. W/R/T Bale, I think he is fairly compensated for his sacrifice. Right? Regarding other professional athletes, I think the concerns raised are similar, if not the same, as any other profession or job. The dishwasher, lawyer, banker, doctor or student makes similar sacrifices for the sake of their next paycheck, knowledge or hopefully in pursuit of their passion. In the end, only those who are comfortable (maybe only some of the time) with the sacrifice for their pay or passion are truly happy.... Maybe. Anyway, love the show. Appreciate what you do and how you push your audience to do better.

@@BecomeElite I understand the prison analogy in relation to losing your freedom. But I disagree with the context you and Cavani are using it in. At the end of the day, both Cavani and Bale are making enough money so they and their families are set for life. Perhaps, for generations. That alone makes the sacrifice and loss of freedom worth it. Not to mention the people and fans they have inspired over their career. Its not about what your losing but what your loved ones are gaining. Thats the mindset you need to have.
Like you said, youre not being compensated like they are, so I get why you may feel or have felt like a "prisoner". But I find what Bale said and what Cavani said disrespectful and immature.
Great video. While I cannot be sympathetic to professional footballer's woes I do understand them e.g. missing out on family events etc. But on the flip side as he said "it's what we signed up for". As we know professional footballers when they get to the big leagues are paid a lot of money. I would say that's fair compensation. Of course for players in the lower leagues they're not paid as much, but they have the potential to make it into the big leagues.
Great pay, model girlfriends, flashy cars. Lots of down time. And they play football for a big rather than being stuck in an office for 8 hours a day. It's not a bad life.

To be honest with you, I would have loved that life. To me, this should be more of a military approach instead of "prison" approach. Great video.
Here is some insights for kids thinking about ANY career. Whatever you choose to do in life, no matter what it is, sports, acting, real estate, oil and gas, entrepreneur, medicine, it does not matter, if you want to be the best at that, you are going to have to sacrifice a lot and work a lot. Most kids only think about the glitter and money around any career. In reality those are just byproducts of what you do and how well you do it. Talk to a doctor, say an anesthesiologist who are very well compensated, that person is going to say the same thing, he is super busy with a huge responsibility over his shoulders… the life of the patients. So don’t choose a career based on glitter, choose a career based on what you don’t mind sacrificing your time to do it because you feel rewarded.
Well. I'm not Professional Soccer Player yet But my "Second Job" is IT and that happens to me becuase I was putting so much Pressaure on me to be the Best and I start to feel like a Robot. More Later I discover that I was doing the things wrong and I need to relax when I feel my Brain having a Burn Out. Is Natural that People Judge You (Good or Bad). You don't need to be a Robot to be the Best you only need to Enjoy the Game (Knowing what is your Paper in the Team like a theatre performance, not equal because you can change all the Time :) ..). When I play soccer I don't think in nothing I only enjoy what Im doing with my Hearth knowing what I need to do. Good Video
I served 12 years in the Royal Navy - I was told where to be, when to eat, how to dress.....I served from family for 9 months straight on a warship with 120 other men....I wasn't paid £200,000 a week...man the fuck up and appreciate what you have.

Hi Matt. That's so motivative. The pain is always temporary and we are designed to forget about them as time elapse. On the flip side, the absolute pain of regret of not realizing our ultimate potential can be life long. If you felt like the pressure is too high to handle, try to talk to a performance coach. The pain and boringness of living a robotic life is not a pathetic consequence, it's the only reason why we are able to consistently deliver while those normal human beings don't.

It's not that hard, thousands of well paid footballers do it, they exercise like 2-3 hours at day and its not even the whoke week but some days, and we are ignoring the ball-work where you're literally having fun with friends.

I started playing soccer in 10 grade. Its probably the only thing that kept me moving forward in life, because it gave me goals and better things to attain. Forcing me to complete all my tasks so I can be free to play, and now Im at a D1 school and it continues, and I can't wait to join the pros and see what God has in stored for me. It won't be easy, but I can definitely handle that over my 7am to 6 pm engineering job.

After actively chasing the dream of being a soccer player for 8 years , I quit 2 years ago ...I used to watch all your videos and they really helped me a lot , I became good enough to play at U/19 level for a professional soccer team in South Africa ,and then went on to play Castle league(national U/21 league) I ended playing a handful of friendlies and one league game ...I had one bad game and the coach lost all confidence in me and I eventually lost confidence in myself and that went on to be my last ever competitive game of football... I couldn’t get my confidence back and I eventually got dropped from the team ....football is amazing , but I started hating it , and I went through depression...that’s when I decided to quit ...I don’t regret it though , I still play for fun and that’s enough for me .
