- I'm playing a Fender '59 Bassman Reissue and I'm replacing the stock speakers with a Quad of 1966 Oxford 10L6 speakers from a 1966 Fender Super Reverb and it takes the Bassman reissue super close to the Holy Grail original. I was completely blown away by the tone and playability. The original 1959 Fender 5F6A Bassman came with Jensen P10R speakers but they are almost impossible to find today. The Oxfords are a bit more common and affordable though. I'm using a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom and a 2021 Fender Telecaster 1960 Relic.

I could spend the rest of my days on that amp and be happy. It's right in the tone zone. Rock on.
Thanks, Rock on!
Another awesome video Johan. Much love for the '59 Bassman LTD here. My one and only amp now...Thx again.
Thanks man, glad to hear it! This reissue is pre LTD though, with a plywood cab rather than a solid wood cab. So your LTD is even better
Glad in having a 59 bassman reissue, its growl is amazing! Wish I could have these speakers on it! Incredible video as ever!
Thanks Otavio! Glad you like it!
Hi Johan. I don't know how uploading to youtube works, but some music content has uploads of MKV files instead of MP4. Since you went to the trouble of recording these sounds so well, it would be good to have them in better than MP3 sound, which is the maximum possible within the MP4 container, since so many of us listen to your work carefully on good headphones. Thanks very much for all you do.
It sounds really good, the Telecaster became my favorite
Thanks, glad you like it!
Certainly a superb amp. The samples you played were great to reveal the power and versatility of the bassman. Both guitars sounded amazing and for me just the Tele was the best bringing back the origins of rock. Great video and thanks !
Thanks! It’s great to hear that!
Speakers are everything! Great experiment Johan. Love the Oxfords. They’re slept on
That tone is the stuff of dreams!
Thanks man, really good to hear that!
Johan! You and Stanley (Milstap) have done the best demo’s on Bassman amps by far! The only other amp (imo) would be the’59 High Power Twin. These babies are in another realm!
These re-issues ain’t bad either!
Great work btw
👍🇦🇺
Thanks man! Glad to hear that! Stanley is indeed the benchmark for Bassman tone but I’m glad you like my tones too!
Beautiful tone, Johan. You nailed it! The first guitar sequence was amazing. So Led Zeppelin IV-ish.
I tend to prefer you on a Les Paul, but the Tele sounded pretty magical in this video, not gonna lie. Loved the crunchy stuff on the LP. God bless and rock on 👍😎🎸
Thanks man, it’s great to hear that! Rock on! 🎸🥁
Sounds as good as any JTM/Plexi. Driven LP is sweet liquid woman tone, Tele well-rounded, straight-forward bite. Both great sounds. 👍
Thanks great to hear that!
You MADE me buy a 1955 bassman because of some of your other videos earlier! It’s not a 59 and has 60s ceramic jensens and cts alnicos but I still love it better then 59 reissues
Glad to hear that!
Nice job. Sounds great brother
Thanks brother!
My understanding is that the cones on the early Eminence Blue Alnico that came on the first ones are the Donal Kapi brand used on the original Jensen Alnicos. Also, you can tweak the reissue to be closer to the original; such as remove the solid state rectifier plug in and put in a tube rectifier, change tube types and tweak the filtering. Also swapping the output transformer with an exact repro would be another possible tweak. Sounds great as is, though.
Interesting I’ll read up on that!
A bit much!
A solid state to tube rectifier would be a significant change. The chase never ends. 💪
I would love to hear you try it through the Mojotones or even vintage Greenbacks!
Hi! That can be arranged!
That’s a great sound!
Thanks Phil!
Johan’s sound can’t be contained in these amps. That said - the Les Paul better captures his sound. The Tele is like a sandwich without the sliced turkey - only bread, lettuce and onion.
Thanks my playing style fits Gibson better.
@@JohanSegeborn Your playing style is great on both guitars. My ear tends to go for fatter sounding instruments. 😊 Thanks for sharing this interesting video!!
Johan is a real treasure of knowledge .
It helps that you pick like you are fresh out of the 70's. 😀I have a 1994 tweed Fender Blues DeVille modeled after the Bassman and mine has the same blue alnico's that you took out of the Bassman RI. I wonder if I popped similar speakers in it if I can change the tome in that direction as well? However I thought it sounds great with the blues in it too.
Great video, love to watch you noodle around!
Thanks, that’s kind of you! You’ll definitely get great results with the DeVille too!
Aloha Johan! Great video. I don't see Tweed Bassman or reissue on the used market much anymore.
Aloha Victor!
The Oxford’s sound really great, Johan! I always wondered about those speakers. I have a blond Fender Tremolux in which I traded the speakers (what I think were probably 10” Oxford’s) when I had the Tremolux cabinet converted to 12” speakers. 😭 I guess I thought or always heard Oxford’s were dull and lifeless sounding. I also have a real ‘59 Bassman that someone had a head cabinet built for. I use it through a Marshall cab with 8 ohm Vintage 30’s with a switch wired to switch between 8 ohms and 2 ohms so that I can correctly match the transformer to the speakers.
Thanks Scott! Yeah Oxford speakers have an undeserved reputation. Zeppelin 1 was most likely an Oxford speaker with a pulsonic cone
@@JohanSegeborn Oh wow! Did not know that’s where the Communication Breakdown tone came from. Excellent video!
Love those cleans
Thanks!
Super cool and much closer to vintage. If you get a chance, try out the Jupiter clones. I have the p10r clone in my 7 watt bass breaker and it sounds great. Would probably be around $600 for 4😊
Thanks! I’m gonna have a look at those!
Excellent sounding amp and PLAYER.
The Oxfords are sounding great, while I am mot sure if they are closer to the original. I'd probably would give the Jensen RIs the nod at that, as soon as broken-in..
If one is shooting for a smoother top-end and a bit more body over the P10R RI, the P10R-F are a great choice, keep the Alnico vibe and currently available brand new.
I got a 4x10 with these. Can make epic noise, while keeping the db sensible (low efficiancy), helps pushing the Bassman harder before the soundguy kills you.
Thanks! Glad to hear that. Yeah the oxfords have a fuzzy quality to them that P10Rs don’t have. Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn yes, I do like unorthodox combinations from time to time, because I am not after a specific recreation of a certain tone, but after my own voice. So I have a brownface-related amp, that I love with my 'pair of 71 Pulsonic G12H 55Hz, while I do like my JMP related Puretone with light weight seamed-Cone AlNiCos...
One man's dull and mushy is another ones smooth and creamy.
The Bassman sounds great with the Oxfords, even If I'd make a different choice myself.
Keep on doing that marvellous job.
Cheers
I might be biased but I think the Lips humbckers tame a little of highs and make them more pleasant for my taste. The Tele is a little harsh. Great for cutting in a mix maybe but not my taste. Great playing and demo as always bro
Thanks man, glad to hear it!
Another stellar video! The Tele tone at about 7:10 was perfect. Are there companies trying to make speakers that sound like vintage Jensen, Eminence and Oxford speakers like they do for vintage Celestions?
Thanks Eddie! Yeah it would be interesting to see who’s the benchmark today. Cheers
It sounds great, Johan. I'm curious whether you've tried any of the well-respected Weber or Jupiter speakers that have made in the tradition of the Jensen P10r?
Thanks Zachary! Haven’t tried any of those yet but thanks for the suggestion! Cheers
Love this video Johan! What amp settings were you using with the Tele? - particularly around the 9.20 mark?
Thanks Pete! That’s the bass channel high input, with knobs around 5 and gain on 6
Definitely sounds better when it’s completely cracked… I think it’s would sound amazing with a treble booster
Sounded great, but a before & after comparison would have been useful!
\m/
Thanks man, yeah I agree. Time was short this time though so I added before as I link in the video description
@@JohanSegeborn Ok. Cheers!
I’m curious what webers Jensen copies would sound like in there or Celestion 10” greenbacks
4:36 YEEESSS
Imagine if someone actually used that tone in 1959
Cheers Scott!
Yeah they would assume that the amp was broken or burning 😄
Friend! I NEED you to make some Kemper profiles for me. Your tones are the best in the business. Please consider it. Thank you.
It is strange that these speakers sound so good because the rumour calls them "Oxfart" or even "Oxnard" ! Rumours are not always right ! i've done a clone of the bassman but when I tried to put the speakers, impossible with the tranies ! I had to do another cab with 2.5 cm more height to fit the speakers below the chassis...
Thanks! Yeah one needs to dial back the bass a healthy dose for many Fender speakers. Cheers
I found that with the Deluxe Reverb too. As soon as you starting cranking Fenders you have to dial the bass way back - otherwise said fart noise eminates 😂
@@JohanSegeborn- same for classic Boogies too on the lead channel.
Johan, I have a question unrelated to this video. Is it safe to use a 12 watt amp with a 6.5" speaker for a live setting? I have a solid state Laney LX12 combo amp I got back in 2006. I currently use it a lot now that I've place a Joyo American Sound amp sim pedal in front of it (It's suppose to replicate the sound of a '57 Tweed Deluxe with a mic in front of it). It's loud, but my only concern is if it's loud enough to work in a band setting, especially going up against drums.
Interested to hear your thoughts.
Great video also!
Cheers from Barbados 🇧🇧
Thanks Kadeem! If the speaker is rated for say 20W and up it will work. 12W is only enough up against a soft jazz drummer though. Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn Can't see any details on the speaker itself. However the back does say this:
Power Source: 120VAC 50/60Hz
Power Consumption 20Watts ~50/60Hz
I guess I'm good then?
Woah, just started listening at @3:00, Is that a ton of natural compression on that amp with clean tones?
Thanks! Yeah I’m playing with a lot of gain but with a light touch to get as much saturation as possible yet retaining a clean tone. Only slight compression added in post to glue a mics together
Loved it with the tele, thought it sounded dreadful with les paul
Thanks, elaborate on the LP though
@@JohanSegeborn the tele sounded like a tele should, clear and strident with a sweet top end. Imo the les Paul sounded like the one trick pony I have always believed it to be. The tele can do anything, imo in the clip the les Paul sounded like a bloated and farty mess. The tele into that amp with a dash of plate reverb [ catalinbread talisman ] would be lovely. Good work Johann
Amp sounds killer… what tuning are you using on the tele?
Thanks! That’s Open G
I’m definitely a Marshall guy I think the tweed Bassman is overrated
Tasty tone, dig.
Thanks!
