    Wow Adam! I completely missed that you covered my performance. I'm glad I found it now!
    You gave me a lot to think about! I actually wasn't able to get the recording from the mics on stage so I was forced to use the mic on my camera which really brings out the splatty attack noise. I was using Nanae Mimura 6/4/4/3 for mallets so the middle two mallets didn't play a part in the runs being even.
    I definitely will be practicing my chorale rolls and keeping runs even.
    Thanks so much for reviewing this!

    Its interesting to think that sometimes although the composer knows the sound they want they may not be the best performer. I've found this in some of the stuff I've written. I can write with accuracy and intent but I personally can't always perform what I've written perfectly in the way I Imagined it. Sometimes giving your score to someone else might bring out the beauty of what you imagined but couldn't actualize yourself.

      You are so right, sometimes the playing of certain pieces is beyond us! I start to find myself thinking this way too... 'maybe I'm getting too old for this' 😂

    Well we only just found this, but it's most certainly another thing finding my boyfriend in a video like this. Wow. I'm typing this comment as I'm watching the video and one of the first things I noticed when he first showed me this was the amount of musicality he has. I think he might murder me reading this comment, but it's definitely true! John is extremely modest about his playing, but I'll say now that this video really reinforced the point that he has so much potential as a musician. One of the things that struck me about him as a musician is that he has a heightened sense of musical interpretation and a very fine ear. His accuracy is, unless he says differently, because he works very, very hard on a piece to get it right. He's been doing takes on other instruments for recordings and will spend hours on just a single section alone to get it right. So yeah, he's extremely hardworking.
    I wholeheartedly agree with all of this advice. And I think everything you've said is gonna benefit him so much, he always tries to get better. So thank you!

    hi adam! wonderful video, really really enjoyed watching it. i had a few thoughts, if i may.
    about blake tyson's voicing in the A section of the piece, i wonder if he's interpreting the first half (bars 9-16) as literally just an arpeggio (that is, purely harmony and not necessarily melody), and the same for bars 17, 19, etc. i don't have the score, i don't know how it's notated, but is it possible that there is no melody in those bars? (with the exception of the right hand melody in bar 18, 20, etc.)
    i agree with your comments on john's chorale, but one thing john did that was really nice that you didn't comment on was that he made use of the playing zones. specifically, he moved towards the nodes at some moments for a decay effect, which i thought was cool.
    i wonder if john has a marching background. it would certainly explain a few things. virtually all marching front ensembles prioritize articulation and volume over resonance and tone (or, rather their ideal tone is very harsh and attack-heavy), so maybe the few moments of core-y tone didn't bother john because that's what he's used to. his stevens' technique looks gorgeous and resembles the marching "west coast technique," the approach they teach in groups like blue devils, blue knights, pacific crest, and pulse percussion. it would also explain why he thought of rolling over the node and not lifting his hands to tilt the mallets.
    anyways, i've been watching your channel for a while and i just thought i would weigh in. keep up the good work!

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You nailed it Justin, I think he's got that similar west coast feel you mentioned and I did appreciate his zone playing yes! In the A section, yes the piece is notated with no accents etc but the right hand melody is always cross-notated which makes me feel like it should be voiced a bit more (not necessarily louder, just more weight). But then again he's the composer so he would probably tell me off hahaha!
      Thanks so much for watching the video and I appreciate your comments :)

    • @johnwallar
      @johnwallar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! John here,
      I actually have never marched a day in my life! I have to partially blame the marimba for this one, since it was a school marimba that definitely could use some tightening and was pretty worn-in and just naturally sounds rather dead. I also couldn't warm up before this performance so I was a little more stiff than usual.
      My lesson teacher has never let any technique mistakes hide. It's hard to see, but I did end up picking up my hands a bit at the chorale (which definitely needs work) to try and get it quieter.

      I agree with Justin here. These sections, in my view, do not call for additional emphasis, they represent the Cricket awakening and beginning to sing. The student's work is beautiful and I don't fault him for wanting to show his skill. Blake is performing his art and it is stunningly beautiful. Mr. Tyson's video has made him and this piece famous. I am not a musician but I have watched it countless times over the years. I enjoyed this comparison Adam. Nice job. Thank you.

    Awesome! Have you ever reviewed the Pearl Malletkat? Would be interested to hear your take on the digital version of a marimba.

    • @AdamTanPercussion
      @AdamTanPercussion  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean the Pearl Malletstation, I have tried both that and the AM Malletkat and I find that the Malletstation feels very 'plastic' to me (not much rebound and feel) - great for live electronic performances, beat making, sampling etc but I'm not sure it's a good replacement for a marimba in a concert context. The Malletkat is definitely more 'marimba' like as it has spongier bars and more feel but extremely expensive for what it is, and I feel the build quality is not as polished as the Pearl. I'm hoping that they make some sort of 'roll out' marimba based on the Malletstation (Malletstation XL?) that is semi flexible and can be rolled up for storage, that would be amazing 😄
