Well since the ether group is something in protein DNA and carbonhydrates so it's LITTERALY the source of all life... Biochemestry is hard help.

A cool detail about Ether in XC2 is how Mythra uses Foresight. In XC1, the Monado can predict the future by observing how the Ether flows, and since everything is made of Ether, these predictions are pretty much perfect if nothing outside the flow (Zanza, Alvis or Shulk) changes it.
In 2, much of Alrest is still made up of the same "stuff" as the old world, making Ether much scarcer. So for Mythra to use Foresight, she has to blast the surroundings with a "bubble" of concentrated light ether so that she has enough ether on which to perform predictions. That's the reason why Foresight has smaller range and is less precise/powerful than the Visions of 1, despite being the exact same ability.

Holy shit the beginning sequence is amazing, why has no one made this connection until now??
Edit: Just finished the video, my vote goes to Riku.

Nothing seems to suggest people in Xenoblade 2 are ether based beings like in 1. Life was recreated through particulate reconstructors that disassembled matter of the old world to repurpose it and reshape it, with the help of the dna information stored in the core crystals. So physically, every being in 2 is made of the same stuff as the old world. The only thing is that unlike humans, Blades and Titans do rely on ether as basically their blood, it’s their power source essentially. That is why Blades can suffer from ether deficiency like Homs, but not humans.

Tons of people have been commenting on how good the intro is, would you consider putting it out separately as a meme short or something? It’s actually incredible

Ether in Xenoblade seems to be a force of nature that exists to explain all the super human physics breaking stuff characters do. In the main trilogy it is something that is everywhere and important, but not everything. There are places where there is little to no ether, but things still exist. There may be some nanomachines involved such as those in the cloud sea, but may be unrelated to the main stuff. The Zohar / Conduit gives power, but never stated to be ether. We know so little about 20xx Earth that it is possible ether existed before the conduit ever appeared.
Then in Xenoblade X, it just seems to be a normal part of the universe. Mira has a lot of weird things going on, but ether is not one of them. None of the aliens mention it being a rare substance, nor Mira having a lot of it. A lot of regular animals can use ether or gravity attacks, and this is apparently normal too.

What is interesting about the concept of ether as a theortical substance that transports light particles.
In Xenoblade 3, we use light (particles) to store it into the Core Crystals of Origin. The reason being is, because light particles, photons, are the only substance left behind after a anti matter and matter collision. A Annihiliation Event irl. With Future Redeemed confirming the worlds are made of opposite matters, it makes sense why light is the only common language left for the worlds to communicate. But how exactly? Well, the theoretical concept that ether is a substance that can transport light particles in the atmosphere and both worlds being made to some extend out of ether, it brings a lot of interesting food for thought.

I also think that the reason that all the Alrest citizens seem to either be blades or have core crystals implanted in them in Xenoblade 3 has somehting to do with ether. Maybe in order for origin to store you properly you need to be able to have some minor ether control, which Homs appear to have, but the Alrestian humans dont

14:56 There's also some flavor text regarding Ether in the Arms Manufacturers descriptions. Specifically for Meredith and Co. It says something along these lines: 'An innovative user of Ganglion tech in the weapon-design field. Its products have made waves for their ability to harness ether, a feat which has until now proven difficult for human technology.' Their weapons tend to either be of the Ether damage type or Gravity (which is the most powerful damage type as a large number of enemies, especially the big enemies and mechanical enemies) have a weakness to Gravity.
Edit: I also want to tack on that in Xenoblade 2, anyone can use arts. They don't need to be a Driver or Blade, being a Driver does make it easier though. We can see this with Rex actually. At the beginning of the game he can use Arts just fine without a Blade partner.

Ether in game is just nanobots + energy -- in other words energy cells
It can be manipulated by human fellings (or animal) as it gives energy to trigger those bots.
