      Actually the reason was that, you couldn't rely on the VHS tapes to play at the right speed on your equipment so to play along you needed to tune to the video. Play along with this guy? Not so much!

    One of the great things about Shawn’s playing is that while he was a monster player and obviously very capable of delving into fusion, he was very grounded in a lot of pentatonic and bluesy ideas. Lots of taste and soul in his phrasing. He knew how to add space to his lines. He could keep his foot off the gas when it suited. Love his tone.

    He uses a technique where he anchors his wrist and uses that as the fulcrum point for his picking. You can tell by the way he contorts his wrist as he approaches the lower (in pitch) strings. Using this method is less accurate at the beginning and makes palm muting almost impossible, but it's just about the only way to even approach his speeds. He's essentially using the tremolo picking technique to run scale patterns.

    Not many comment on his seamless, ferocious picking technique. It's in a similar vein to other great players such as George Benson, Chris Poland, Bruce Bouilliet and even early Paul Gilbert where they tilt the pick back and use the thumb, index and middle finger pads contrary to the more standard grip of resting it between the side of the index finger and thumb, employing a forward-tilt. One of the finest players ever and this REH instructional material is timeless!

    Is it true that Shawn Lane died broke or almost broke? I know he never made a lot of money and that's sad because he certainly deserved to make a lot of money in the music business. I can only surmise it was his choice of music that he played which appealed to too small of an audience to ever be able to make good money from his guitar playing. Lane is proof that no matter how talented one is, if he chooses to pursue a career that caters to a very small "niche audience" he can't expect to make a good living doing it.

    • @aliensporebomb
      @aliensporebomb 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Kendall2001 He had major health problems which were a major problem for an uninsured musician and at that time the condition he had was not manageable except with high doses of steroids which caused other issues. Sadly, his condition today would have been easily managed with meds. The same type of arthritic condition he had Alex Lifeson of Rush is afflicted with today yet he's still playing on stages on tour this year.

    • @Gregorypeckory
      @Gregorypeckory 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Kendall2001 Be careful about the lessons you draw from Lane's career. Groundbreaking original artists are almost forced to create their own audience, and I doubt many of them ever decide they'd prefer it to be a small one. He was simply inventing his own guitar style, dictated by his amazing creativity, probably hoping to draw as many listeners as possible.
      There are many factors involved in determining how any music career goes, so I don't think the assumption that Lane was playing to small audiences because he made a decision to "cater to a very small" audience, is warranted. Its more likely he never made such a choice. His marketing issues probably had more to do with the music business, problems with Sony records, etc, than with his choice of what and how to play.

    • @v10ramTony
      @v10ramTony 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Kendall2001 He also had psoriasis and no insurance for a very long time. I wouldn't doubt he was still in debt by the time it killed him because of all the other bills and problems it caused, and since he only lived till 43.

    • @Kendall2001
      @Kendall2001 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Being a "groundbreaking musician" hardly condemns someone to financial ruin and obscurity. Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen are just a few of the groundbreaking artists who did extremely well creating their own audience and making a lot of money doing it.

    • @Gregorypeckory
      @Gregorypeckory 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Kendall2001 Of course those are the names we all know because they really did make it big. For every "groundbreaking musician" who makes it big, there are probably 10k that nobody ever hears about. There are a lot of factors that determine the particulars of a given musician's career, and it is no simple matter to "do extremely well by creating your own audience, and making a lot of money doing it".
      In fact, none of the people you mentioned really did create their own audience, except in the sense that they made names for themselves as anyone must. But they made their fortunes by tapping into an existing audience. For one thing, they are all rock guitarists; to be a groundbreaking rock guitarist in a pop culture for which no instrumentalist is more iconic than the rock guitarist is clearly a big advantage over, say trying to hit it big with a groundbreaking Gamelan orchestra, or as a brilliant Carnatic virtuoso such as Mandolin Srinivas (although thanks to John McLaughlin's Remember Shakti, he did enjoy a wider audience than most great Indian musicians will ever enjoy).
      Mandolin Srinivas in many ways broke far more ground in his field than any of the guitarist you mentioned with the possible exception of Jimi Hendrix, who really was a musical revolutionary, even though he was a blues and rock guitarist.
      Not only were your success examples tapping into the popularity of rock guitar, but all are tied to styles that were trending when they became (in the case of all but Yngwie), household names. Jimi and Jimmy were both riding the wave of the blues revival that was sweeping England, and then came to the states as the "British invasion", ironic in Jimi's case, since he wasn't British, yet had to get popular there, before being accepted in his own country.
      Malmsteen rode the 80s wave of interest in rock guitar virtuosity.
      So imagine how much harder it would be to "create your own audience", with microtonal music, or atonal music, or Turkish music, or anything outside of the broad category called "pop", which after all, is short for "popular". Masses of people don't generally embrace something, no matter how brilliant, which sounds completely alien to them, hence, success as a groundbreaking artist depends largely on not being overly groundbreaking.

      Why is everyone chewing on Yngwie and Slash, as if they are two of the shittiest guitar players ever?
      Most speed metal guitarists play only in one style and Yngwie's one of more versatile speed metal guitar players.
      And people say Slash sucks because he's sloppy, then why do people always defend most of the other classic rock guiar players who are very sloppy compared to contemporary virtuosos?
      This shit is seriously getting old.

    the best on guitar but even better on piano

    • @u.v.s.5583
      @u.v.s.5583 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He wasn't better on piano. He should have smoked all Cziffras and Hamelins of this world, that's how good he was on the guitar. There is no way for him to be better on piano. Piano might have been his favourite way of writing music or expressing himself, but he was better on the guitar than on the piano.
      That being said, his keyboard solos were the shit. I'd love to hear more.
