Luckily this one was an easy fix and a mega common problem for MQB cars.
Cam Magnets on the shelf saved the day haha

On my preventative maintenance list for 2024 🙂 thanks for posting 👍
Sounds just like me
I changed mine efter 70K just to be sure. Is a known problem …
@@E50HW got round to doing them myself today. I noticed it would choke a little on idle and couple times whilst driving the car would cut out. No idea if it was related to the cam magnets but I thought I’d do them especially for what they’re worth
Change cam follower too same lifetime with them
Seen a similar issue with the cam adjustment system on these. was causing rough running and seemed like timing was out as no faults for cam magnets. The actual issue turned out to be with the little valve that screws into the end of the cam. it had failed in a way that meant the part the cam magnet depresses was constantly pressed in so inlet cam was at full adjustment on idle. that was gen 2 ea888
Good to see it's a simple fix. I've just bought an 2015 Audi S3 that has a bit of an intermittent rough idle. It'll be fine, then it'll start rumbling & the rev needle jumps about a bit... give it a little rev and it settles... Been hearing a lot of people talking about these cam magnets but never actually showing how to replace them, so nice to finally see one show how to replace them! Job on my list to do ASAP
Did you manage to fix the problem? I’ve had a similar issue, thanks!
Thanks man I have a 2015 s3 as well with the same issue you described. Very happy to find out I can probably fix this easily👍🏻
@@davidkourides2561 Hey, sorry only just seen this comment... but yes, I replaced the cam magnets as described in the video with a couple of units from AUTODOC. Problem went away immediately. 7k miles later, hasn't skipped a beat
Idk, seen some humble mechanic and some dap auto vids explaining the issue and basically saying the whole cam needs to be replaced, because the cam phaser wears out inside the cam causing tolerance issues. And the only way to fix the tolerance issues is a full cam replacement
i have a 7.5 estate and the only thing wrong with it is the air con it needs topping up , cant be bothered lol.
Get it sorted! Summer is on the way 🤣
@@DecimalTenths how can i , i am disabled from a brain heammorrage , with pulse cut out , neck glued back together , radiotherapy to the brain while having a metal clamp made for my jaw , so many ops i lost count , disabetes type 1 catching me up at 29 with 4 injections a day with blood each time , do you think that i have time to mess around thats why i bought a golf r estate 7.5 , but touch wood it been a dream to drive especially me being paralysed down the right hand side.
@aceace5457 Bet you have some fault codes showing when plugged in... Glad the golf is good 😉😘
@@DecimalTenths actually none which is remarkable lol i just have to get the ac topped up , plus it has 1 service still outstanding by the main dealer and full service history by them and one previous keeper .
Same thing happened to my son's 2017 Golf R but when I went to check the cam magnets, I noticed the connectors were covered in oil from a previous spill while filling the engine. I cleaned the connectors with electronic cleaner and wow the car came back to life and ran so much smoother. No more codes.
Sounds well Nick! All the best for 2024 to you and the team!
Cheers, you too pal 👍👍
Nice glad I found your channel.. I’ve just come out of my 2for2 with Vw so will be maintaining it myself from now on..
Great video I always assumed this was a cam cover off job. Nice to know how to tackle this one when it comes around 👍🏻
Easy peasy job for WHEN it happens...😂
The positive, LOL, feel that. Good stuff.
Nice man love colour of the mk5 on the ramp looks mint
Aye its a rare colour that, and does look mint 👌
My 2017 Beetle 1.8T has the same problem. Repairing myself with new cam and phaser.
Did it work for you ?
@@stevennunez6013 I have not started the repair yet. Picked up the M21 mm cam shaft and phaser.
@ ok I was only asking because I replaced the oil control valve it fixed my misfire issues then the same issue returned after a week I just replaced the camshaft magnet (oem) and it did not fix the issue I’m kinda stumped now.
My exhaust magnet was leaking, so I just replaced both at 84K miles (2016 GTI). Also replaced the gasgets and the upper timing chain cover and gasket.
Nicely swerved taking misses shopping mate. Top video & have happy new year to u & ur family 😎👊👍👌✌
You knows it 😂. All the best pal
INA is the OE manufacturer (depending on Model Year) or Pierburg and they're both just under $30U.S.
The "VW" stamped cramp is just mark-up.
As long as you're not buying a Standard version or from EBAY, or Amazon you're good with anything FCPEuro offers on their site.
I got the same issue was at the gasstation and started to run bad and just stopped after a couple of tries my car did perfectly fine im gonna try this hopefully this will fix the issue
Best to log and confirm it. Playing parts darts is no guarantee of it being the problem. 😁
true thing I will bring my car monday to a ''vagspecalist'' hopefully they can help me out I just use like a carly obd thing got me a fault code P001400 but better be safe then sorry just will bring her in. @@DecimalTenths
Your great Thanks mate i also found out that your on board computer disconnected itself from acc and driver accist. If anything wrong with engine so it sorted that as well
Class!
I feel the same about the bonnet pull. Its a nasty feeling having to pull that thing 🤢
😂 hate it...
Even nastier is when the cable breaks (or isn't connected after mucking about with headlights) and having to cut through your front grill 😢
Turn the rubber bumps in. Easy adjustment
Just a quick one on this mines on 85k miles do either of the seals need to be replaced with the cam magnet?
Nice one 👍 would you recommend changing these at any mileage? Thanks
If you like spending money then go for it pal. Otherwise I'd just leave them until they go. They don't damage the car, just cause running issues.
@DecimalTenths hello thanks for that just sometimes seems like a odd little miss on me s3 8v but it's a manual could be that 👍
Thanks had the issue
I’ve a 2016 Gti and there today I was driving the car and my epc light and check engine light came on and I pulled over and turned the car on and off and the car was idling very roughly nearly as if the engine was shaking, when I checked the under the bonnet I seen there was oil coming out at the side of the casing where the cam magnets are, it’s not showing codes for the cam magnets tho, and idea what it could be?
Yeah could be cam magnets...🤣
Don't waste your time playing parts darts. Get a read of the codes and then check the data. Could be something small, could be worse. Far better to spend money on diag then buying the wrong parts.
Did you replace the pvc valve aswell as the cam magnets
I’ve bought the cam position magnets for my Audi s3 hoping it sorts the lumpy idle I don’t have vcds or any diagnostic equipment will I still be okay to change them thanks.
Yes change them.
There’s two? same part number?
Yes same part
What kms range do you see these going bad at normally? I have a 2016 GolfR Stage 2 with around 108,000kms I think I need to change these just in case especially since I AutoX the car too.
There is no mileage for when they would fail. Logging can tell you, but also the symptoms that are generally present
Hello, do you think a P0014 code could be the cam adjuster magnets?? Also do I have to disconnect the battery when replacing the cam adjuster magnets?? Thank you for posting👍🏻
Best to data log to confirm. No you don't need to disconnect the battery to swap out
I did mine few months ago, i could only do the exhaust one as the screw head for the intake was worn, any idea how to get it off?
At least it is in good access for you! If a torx is gone then you could try bashing in a bigger torx or a rescue torx bit (torx bit but with bigger angled teeth). Beyond that it's drill it out.
Cam magnet Intake side part number? Audi s3 2015
I have a B9 A4 2.0 TFSI 190PS and the magnets are leaking very slightly but no running issues. Shall I change them and what make shall I get because TPS want £187 for a pair.
If they're leaking then just get fresh seals. The cover has to be removed to replace the seals but it's easy enough.
Could the cam magnet cause a misfire in one cylinder only? Currently battling to diagnose a misfire in cylinder 3 on my 2015 Passat with the gen 3 1.8T. Currently replaced ignition coils, spark plugs, number 3 injector and also the intake camshaft. I also did a compression test and all cylinders are at 180psi. Still have misfire in cylinder 3. Any suggestions on what other things I may be missing to properly diagnose the issue?
Typically not, but worth a try to test. There are other reasons why this could happen though.
@@DecimalTenths it ended up being the cam magnet. I cleaned the magnet out with brake cleaner until it clicked freely and solved the issue. Unreal 😂
Had an EML come up on our Cupra Formentor EA888 and was diagnosed by Cupra as a MAP sensor . The car had done 9k miles. Are these common to fail as well ? Also what is the service oil change intervals for the car. Thanks :)
MAP sensors failing isn't common at all from my experience. Anything can happen though. The oil change interval is different as per each model, but I'd recommend 6 monthly or 6k miles.
@@DecimalTenths The dealer said it was rare and took them 4 weeks to get a replacement. Hasnt had an EML come up since. We are at 7k miles in the car now and the countdown says 50 days to its service. This service is with the car still under manufacturers warranty , that is due and then we can use a local recomended non-franchise place for thiis and get the oil servicing more regular. Thanks for your reply :)
Are they both the same part I think I need to do mine so are they the same both sides so buy 2 of the same ?
Yes the same.
Mine is 64plate 74k fvwsh do we need to worry about changing timing chains on these?
The interval is 100k, but it is best to check the correlation and log the car with a diagnostic tool such as vcds which gives a far better idea of the chain and tensioner/guides condition
👍🏽
My mk7 is making a loud clacking noise. Its intermittent. No codes on the dash. When i rev the engine it will stall it. When i first start it up it doesnt clack, then itll clack once, a couple times, then constant clacking. Sometimes when i let the clutch out it just dies right away. But the noise is coming from the passenger side where the belts are. Checked all the coils, checked the oil filter no metal, checked the ac compressor. I unplugged the intake magnet and it didn’t change anything. I wonder if unplugging the magnets is a good way to diagnose it
Is it possible that these magnets are faulty, but they don't turn on the fault light?
Yes very common that you get no fault light on. 👍
@@DecimalTenths I checked the cam advance values in the diagnosis, at idle they are quite regular, if I accelerate, the intake values increase and decrease much more than the target value. Could the problem always depend on the magnet?
Are you free for a balloon party😂😂
Yeah will just need to confirm a date and take a deposit...😂
Are both front and rear magnets the same part or are they separate and specific?
Same part 👍
@@DecimalTenths thank you
Hi can I ask what is the mater with the ina part as they claim to be a oe part help please
Genuine parts all the way for us 👍
Are these camshaft magnets the same for the Audi s1?
Yes they are 👍
Hello! I have a vw golf 7 gti and since I bought it in the cold start I feel some hiccups it looks like ignition failures even heard in the exhaust I have already changed spark plugs and coils and it continues also does it in hot if it is in N or P will it be from the magnet cover?
The only way to diagnose this would be with the data. Could also be air leaks, injectors etc..
Is the cam magnet the same for both the intake and exhaust cam magnets
It is 👍
@@DecimalTenths awesome thanks. Will be sticking for “just in case purposes”
What are the pids you look at to confirm timing and cam phase? Can this be done with OBD11?
Hiya mate could i get so.e advice please . Ive got seat leon 2007 tfsi 2.0 turbo .
Cut long story short if left car on idle for long time get blue smoke from exhaust. Chsnged oil filter and new injectors. I noticed when taking manifold off was alot of carbon in head but wasnt able to clean as needed car in rush . . Car smells really rich i have done pcv delete but was doing if before that . Only changed all injectors as misfire and fixed that but still blue smoke when left on idle any help would be appreciated
If the car was in front of me and with logging I'd be able to give you some great advice.
Without that I can only guess.
Blue smoke with sustained idle suggests a turbo seal problem. Anything else would be detected easily but too many variables to know for sure.

OK mate I will give you a call after the new year just found work shop details . Can arrange me me come to visit you . Will take few few hours to get to you mate but will sort out a visit and call you Tuesday. 👍 if that's OK have a good new year
Are the lights in a golf r stock?
The lights in my Golf R are stock Golf R ones.
Does it need coding when replacing it or it’s just plug&play?
Plug n play
@@DecimalTenthsno u need to put basic setting or reset or else it's damn slow just saying I know it's weird I live near German they told me to do this
Nice u should do a day in the life of dt or a week😅
Been asked for that a lot so it's something that will happen in 2024 👍
@@DecimalTenths yea be good to see what goes go 😜

Bonnet release. Turn the rubber bumps in 1 turn. It's the latch is too tight
Im new to VWs what is that zip tie thing again
Its common for the connection to come apart leaving you unable to open the bonnet. A few cable ties prevents this.
@@DecimalTenths thank you for the info!! So just zip tie that part under the hood?
@krishnapatel2863 yes so it can't pop open.
@@DecimalTenths well thank you sir!
They knew their magnets where sub par and needed replacing every 5 years :D
Hello, at what mileage you had this issue? Thanks.
Weve seen this on low and high mileage cars. The Magnets can fail, it just happens.
Hi how can I graph on vcds for my tt 18t. And what specs should I be looking for should it be 15 intake 0 exhaust
Do you mean for a mk1 8N TT?
If you want to check that then the only thing to check is phase and cam position at blocks 091 and 093 and use advanced measuring blocks then select graph. Simples.
@DecimalTenths appreciate that mate. I'll do that tomorrow. I commented on that funny video when your friend bent a rod. I have kess and would love an aggressive map for it. I play a little myself with ecm titanium but you seem to be a master. Would love a copy of his cheese bending map so I can copy the maps into mine
What code did you get for this I got code p001100 A camshaft position (bank 1)- timing over advanced or system performance I have been told to change the cam magnets
I didn't get a code on this one funnily enough. That code is common though. Logging the cam positions will confirm
@@DecimalTenths right nice one pal cheers
What software did you use to read the logs for the diagnostics on this?
I use Dieselpower log viewer. 👍
Cheers bud I'll look into it. I have vcds but new toys are always welcome
Good job bro (( P0016 &P0017..?

@user-sy9bw1mb2u No it wasn't needed on this car.
