Inside a Penthouse Apartment Designed to Celebrate the Handcrafted (Apartment Tour)

  • Inside a penthouse apartment in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, design and craftmanship unite. Millers Point Penthouse sees Studio Barbara collaborate with Elton Group to renovate a tired penthouse apartment, transforming the residence into a welcoming home that celebrates the handcrafted.
Settled within a historic part of Sydney, Millers Point Penthouse sits twenty-eight storeys high overlooking the city harbour. Capable of imbuing each project with personality, Studio Barbara is the ideal firm to work inside a penthouse apartment, removing and reintroducing walls to promote spatial fluidity.
The interior of Millers Point Penthouse diverges from the aesthetic expected inside a penthouse apartment. In place of hard edges that would reflect the modernity of the city, an abundance of curves forms the visual landscape of the home, abstractly referencing the Sydney harbour and the city’s undulating hills.
Throughout Millers Point Penthouse, mink veneer by Elton Group is vital to creating the calming, continuous material palette and curved forms that define the space. In the hands of a skilled joiner, the veneer is perfectly placed inside a penthouse apartment, able to establish an effortless flow between internal spaces and slow the process of discovery within. The high-quality product is treated with the best UV protection in the industry, so that its muted walnut tone will not change with exposure to the sun.
Millers Point Penthouse represents a soothing escape from the bustle of the city. Studio Barbara’s partnership with Elton Group enables residents to enjoy a luxury living experience inside a penthouse apartment.

Agreed. Truly a piece of art. The tonal overlay throughout and just the general sense of retreat that one must feel in this space is incredible. Best attention to detail I’ve ever seen in an apartment home. Making the different floors feel connected as well is just superb. I hope I can make a space as refined as this one day. Architectural design is becoming so incredible

Normally I gravitate towards older apartment buildings as they have more character and sense-of-place. But this apartment has been done very well. I can't even begin to imagine what that apartment would cost considering the view and location.

Great joinery. Really great joinery! I am not usually a fan of dark colored walls but the tone of the veneer and the mix of shapes
and patterns is sublime. Well done.

Stunning! Softening an overly bright space to create a calming retreat from a busy and stressful day was done so sophisticatedly. It also allows the views to become the artwork.
What I enjoy about these videos from Local Project are the ways that the architects and designers described their work. How the location, lighting, the curve of a wall, and the materials etc all interact in their design. Here in the States our designer’s vocabulary seems to be limited to the words “beautiful” and “texture.”

When black walnut veneer is overly refined, it becomes featureless and can appear very artificial, like plastic. I notice this happens on some very expensive furniture, and here it has been applied extensively over a whole apartment. Sorry, I don't think it adds warmth, quite the opposite. The whole apartment has a sort of neo-art deco vibe like one sees in many expensive (and lifeless) condominiums in New York.

This is a beautiful and highly detailed premium flat. I like it a lot, but I can't understand, why is is called a penthouse? it doesn't have a balcony or terrace, it is not top floor either? what qualifies it as a penthouse? why can't we call penthouse only the top floor flat, with terrace around it ?

Imagine it, instead in whitewashed plywood - sometimes the desire is to mute the light because apartments can be cave-like. Not sure if that was the case here but there was a definite intent to darken.

Are you looking for the Truth? We can’t have our own truth, that is what we call opinion. Jesus said, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In other words; follow His way, which is true, and you will have life. We all yearn for what is true in some degree. Here is what truth does according to the Bible, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (Bible verse: John-8:32).” Seek Jesus and you will find Truth.
