I had this receiver but I returned it for the 1080. It sounds way better and has a more immersive sound stage. It is louder even at lower volumes, the voicing and detail is better in clarity. The spring clips on the DH790 for the center and surrounds channels are adequate but you definitely benefit on the 1080 with all the terminals being high quality. The interface is hi-res on screen and you get some better sound field choices once you perform calibration like Engineer and Full Flat. I was glad I went for the 1080!!

I love this receiver, I had to manually calibrate it, but once I had it tuned in it blew me away. I'm running it 5.2.2 with two bass shakers and it sounds awesome for movies. Great video man, awesome channel!

I just purchased this system about a week and a half ago and I absolutely love it. The calibration worked well for me and this thing is simply amazing. I'm running this system with Martin Logan speakers.

I love this receiver! My wife & I bought this last year from Best Buy for $350. Now it runs around $450, or more. At first I used it as a 7.1 set up, & I was very impressed by its sound & set up. We saw Godzilla Vs. Kong at or local theater back in March, & I was blown away from the theater's DTS-X soundtrack. After we moved to our new apartment I changed the receiver's set up to 5.2.2. After watching your page & others I have our system looking & sounding perfect. I'm using the Sony Dolby Atmos speakers, No they're not even close to SVS or Klipsch, but they work for us. With matching subwoofers Godzilla Vs. Kong literally shakes our home. Luckily we have great neighbors. I've never used a amplifier, & I'm just fine about this. Again thank for all of your advice & reviews.

@@phoebe6268 We have 2 Pioneer SW-8 subwoofers hooked up with our system. I've learned from Kpace how both subs have to match for the right tambor. I'm used to my old DCM 10in subwoofer until it unfortunately blew out. It gave me over 20yrs of great use. Having an Atmos system is still new to me, but this receiver has been a great & inexpensive introduction.

Grew up with a really old 5.1 Sony system. Loved it, have a lot of childhood memories with it! When it was time to upgrade my AVR to Yamaha 7.2 and the speakers all to Klipsch and get into Atmos, the old speakers and the subwoofer just really couldn't compare, but the receiver after 2 decades or so is still going strong in my bro's apartment powering his Klipsch reference system! Super reliable

Being much older than you, I found it comical that you weren't familiar with Sony especially since they were the global leader in electronics back in the 1980's with products like the Sony XBR television line and Walkman portable music players. They also made a number of well regarded reel-to-reel tape decks and to this day, they manufacture what are generally regarded as the best camera sensors such as those in the iPhone 13 and Google Pixel 6. They even have some prototype electric cars!! That notwithstanding, I (still) own 3 Sony Receivers which find their way in and out of systems (I'm a collector... or hoarder) and thanks to your wonderfully done videos I plan to add the DH790 to my (ahem) collection so that I can finally have Dolby Atmos (which I think is more hype than anything else but hey). Good luck growing your channel.

I've had this receiver for about 4 years and I'm still using it. I had to go on the internet to fully understand how to calibrate, once that was done I had no big complaints. I initially bought it hoping it would interface with my Sony TV (which it did seamlessly) and then started using it for music. I use the Bluetooth function to listen using my laptop and that works very well. As for the other music options....... it's pretty bare bones. I do have a sub-woofer and turntable hooked up to it (I had to use a phono pre-amp) to make it work well. All in all... I like the STR DH790 enough to keep using it. Every now and then I get the urge to buy something newer, with more bells and whistles, which is what I'm doing now. When it comes right down to it I haven't found anything that I want to spend $600+ on that I really don't need. I may buy a DAP and call it good

Sony receivers are dynamic sounding. I had a sony sre za1100es for 4 years. Replaced it with a denon avrx4700. The sony es kills the denon for music in 5 channel mode. On the denon I listen to music in auro 3d. It's good. The denon excels with movies, the denon costs $800 more. The denon has in 1 month had more handshake issues than the sony had in 4 years. Sometimes I miss the sony

I've had Denon for many years (AVR 391) and had to upgrade because it's not compatible with my new eARC TV. I bought it for $449, which is in my price range. There's no way I'll pay $700+ for a receiver and there was nothing in between. Anyway, I found the usability of the Denon to be horrible. The menu system was terrible and the customer service was worse. Btw, I've never had a receiver menu come up on a TV screen, so that was something.

Recently purchased this receiver. Nice price for the options available such as 2 subwoofer, atmos support. The calibration did work for me and was surprisingly accurate. I measured the distance after calibration to see how accurate it was. I stream my movies so i really couldnt tell how it processes Atmos, DD, ect. Blu ray is the best way to test that in my situation. I was happy with the music as well. I am running Klipsch speakers that runs bright, and thats how i like it. And your right, you have to manually adjust the treble. I REALLY like that option that you can adjust each speaker bass and treble level. I have never owned a receiver that had that option. There is more i could say but gonna cut it rite here. I give it an 8/10. One thing i cant do that id like is listen to music via blutooth from my phone and view a tv broadcast at the same time. Maybe it has that ability i just havent figured it out yet.

I think it’s a good review but anyone wanting a new fairly cost effective AV receiver should just go buy the Sony Str 1080 dn - for £450-550 quid , it’s easier to calibrate, you can run 7.2.2 set ups with it , Run 4k and Dolby atmos as well as improved dts-x effects , lots of pass through options etc .

      Dont agree, I had a 1060 and a 1080 and both
suffered catasthrophic power failures. It was turned off and never came back on. I am hoping this one doesnt blow up aswel not sure where you can buy the 1080 for that price they are discontinued now.

My experience was very similar with this receiver and your assessment is spot on. I run a 5.1.2. I hear notice the same lack of “sparkle” in the highs especially when compared to my Yamaha set up. It’s a good unit for me until I can get what I really want. As for 2- channel Music it is impressive running digital stream directly from my Roku Ultra.

Only complaint is the lack of Digital inputs. It's 2022 and 1 optical and 1 coaxial inputs is ridiculous. My old STR-DH810 has 3 optical and 1 coaxial inputs. Come on Sony. ✌️

Sooo I am returning the LX-305 🤦🏾‍♂️. I can honestly say that this receiver is phenomenal! The Dirac live was beautiful with ATMOS music. It sounded so good! However, it was hard leaving my Sony STR-DH770. I do feel that the Pioneer BASS prowess favors full range speakers (bookshelf and/or floor standing). For some reason, DIRAC and MCACC forwarded too much bass to my in-celling speakers (Sonance)-despite the 80hz Crossover. I tried adjusting it but it just wasn't the same! In addition, I never really understood the "Dynamic" soundscape of Sony Receivers in other videos until I tried something else. Now I do! The LX305 is OUTSTANDING for ATMOS content and Movies- no debate; however, for music, it was a minor let down compared to my Sony. Music felt more impactful on the Sony. especially when playing 2channel audio through the "Multi-Ch" setting on my STR-DH770. Movies felt more Alive and "theatrical" as well. Since my STRDH770 doesn't have Dolby ATMOS, I am now curious with trying the STRDH-790 since it's a minor upgrade that includes E-ARC and ATMOS/DTS:X (wondering how the atmos compares). The Sony DH770 felt like a better fit for my 7.1 set-up with in-ceiling speakers (6" Sonance) and 12" SVS sub over tile flooring -SHOCKING... I KNOW! 🤷🏾‍♂️ lol Their soundscapes is something special after the DCAC. Their dialogue is SO CLEAR but with a touch of flavor from the Bass for midrange content, and this was my DH770!!👀
I'm sincerely sad that Sony isn't releasing any new receivers. 😭 (if you heard otherwise, LET US KNOW! lol)
I really loved the pioneer LX305 but it was too bass heavy for my "small" speaker configurations. I was severely torn over my decision to return. I think what really pushed me though was the old yellowish screen lol (They are well over-due for a make-over). I think they should've used the VSX-935 screens. It would've made the ELITE serious feel more ELITE and marketable. but that's just me! if I had boxed speakers, I'm sure I would've kept it without a hesitation. I just have a unique set-up worth calling out for anyone that has in-ceiling speakers.

I appreciate this review and all of your comments below! I am a "casual" who appreciates good sound but am definitely not very knowledgeable. I have a large room but my couch is at the halfway point of the room where the theater will stop. My system is 99% for gaming on my PS5 and Series X. I have two polk towers, two rears on stands, a sub, center channel, and will be getting two ceiling speakers. I'm on somewhat of a budget, so the price point of this box is especially attractive considering it's an HDMI 2.1 and my TV and consoles use VRR, Atmos, etc. Looks like this one could be the one for me, at least for now until I decide to upgrade down the line!

I just bought a Denon S760H. It has all the fancy bells and whistles. The issue I'm having is that is has too many settings / options. I spend more time fiddling with stuff as opposed to enjoying it. I'm returning it and picking up this Sony. I run my series X to my LG CX then earc to the receiver so the 4k/8k pass thru is not a big deal for me. As long as the Sony has earc I'm fine.

I have this same receiver and had the same issues of a weak treble. I am running 20yr. old PSB Image 4t's. I was running an HK AVR15 with them and they sounded great. The Sony does sound better in 2 channel mode and performs much better with high bit rate streams like from Tidal for me.

You needed $5k speakers to tell you if you didn't like a particular piece of music? lol lol. Dude, I cant thank you enough for posting this video. I bought one three or four years ago as an open box item from B&H Photo in NYC for just over $150 dollars. I dont remember the exact price I paid but I do know it was less than $200 and I am now ready to open the box. lol. I looked at your video first and can see I did the right thing when I bought it. Used to work for Sony Electronics, years ago. I've been using an STR-DH820 (circa 2011) A/V receiver for over a decade, because I haven't heard anything I like better.
Digital media requires codec interpretation, and algorithms which can work with the onboard hardware for 'optimal' sound reproduction of the source media. That hardware changes over time - from model to model - to lower costs or provide new features, or to decode newer Dolby codecs - so the algorithms provided also change. Some algorithms are preferable to others, imo. It's all very subjective.
I know what you mean about the movie soundtrack lacking 'brightness' in the higher freqs. Just the result of this receiver's codec reproduction.
Looks like, on the DH790, there are no tone controls included. Digital drawback. The old analog systems always had separate treble & bass controls. Nowadays, those are missing from a lot of modern digital A/V receivers, sometimes replaced by a digital equalizer buried somewhere in the settings & sometimes just absent, entirely.
The STR-DH820 from 12 years ago has those treble & bass controls, via a dual-function knob on the front. It makes a big difference. I can dial in very specific levels of treble or bass into a movie soundtrack whenever I want it. Don't have to be dependent on the levels the movie's sound editor picked, and what the receiver's firmware reproduces.
The DH790 has Pure Direct (which the older DH820 doesn't). But, is there a way to dial bass/treble tone up & down, to preference? If not, maybe another model will have this feature. Bi-amping might make a big difference, but that requires speakers capable of it.
Direct tone control is an essential feature, imo - just another of the many reasons the older systems still have lots of appeal. My DH820 will never output 4K video (let alone 8K), but I don't see that as a reason to move on from a system that hit a 'sweet spot' of balance between firmware programming, hardware, and features.

I have this receiver with a jamo speaker set up, including the jamo atmos speakers and a polk audio. I had to adjust calibration as well and play with the db's. There are a couple movies that I used when tuning it. It sounds really good in my space. With the adjustments I made, I can feel the movies that I am watching.

But My Sony 3100 ES is more dynamic fuller.
I have sony dn 1070, 590, 790 which has more dsp selection than my sony 1080, but i love all of them. My Yamaha rx 2080 sounded congested, onkyo not my taste. Marantz still learning.

I own a Sony STR-1080 av receiver. It has something called "Phantom" technology, which supposedly makes surrounds sound like they're positioned somewhere else. I don't understand it, really, but here's what Sony says about it: "This function [Phantom] calibrates the speaker positioning (angle of each speaker’s configuration from the measurement position) based on the measurement results of the Auto Calibration (D.C.A.C. EX) function to bring the sound closer to the surround-sound effect obtained with ideal speaker positioning. Thus, for example, this function can allow you to enjoy a surround-sound effect acoustically equivalent to that of a 7.1.2-channel speaker system, using only a 5.1.2-channel speaker system."

Even though I had the next model up (Sony STR 1080) I've experienced quite a few AVRs since then, from budget right up to the audiophile grade arcam avr20
And I can ensure anyone who's interested in a Sony receiver that one will not be disappointed with the sound of the sony especially with it's 2-channel audio (music)
I don't know if it's because I was using the next model up or if our rooms are totally different, but I found the calibration from the SONY STR-DN1080 receivers was pretty much bang-on, especially compared to Denon's audyssey calibration!
( Mind you it could be that I'm just a lazy bastard 😄 )

Was there ever an update on Monday?
I've had this receiver since May 2021. I play it at Vol. 18-23 throughout the day & Vol. 9-14 in the evening.
    Connected to:
    2- Klipsch Reference R620F (Fronts)
1- Polk Series II (Center Ch) forgot model
    2 Klipsch F200 (Rears)
2- Polk Monitor 60 Series II (Surrounds)
    2- Polk HTS 12, 12" Subwoofers
BASS set between +1/ 2 in the EQ
    TREBLE set between +7/8
Distance set ture to actual distance
LEVELS aka power to Each Speaker:
    FR/L +9.0
    CEN +10
    SR/L +9.5
    REARS +10
Subwoofers +5.5 but 6.5 sounds best (neighbors)
I've had no issues, RAP, ROCK, OLDIES, POP, or MOOOOVIES either. American Gangster, the boat scene going to meet to plug, crystal clear legible audio.
Really would like an update on your Powerhouse Speakers?
Looking to upgrade to the Denon X8500HA or wait for a 13ch/powered Marantz to go 7.2.6..
I'll donate the STR DH790 to another room jn the house or something.

My thoughts since 1998 was only Denon and Yamaha. I just started to like Onkyo this year hearing about the 210 watts or 100 at 8 ohm, THX Dolby Atmos receiver for $350 and the 32 Bit DAC audiophile type. Denon DRA800h is 24 bit DAC but most music files are 24 bit. Anyways all i heard was Yamaha and Denon since 1998 to now- owned both. Yamaha better if $800 or Less. Denon is Best have to get 2700h or 3800 series be $800 to $1,600+. The 2700 and 3700 are older so they are Way Less $$

Sony makes the absolute best for Blu-Ray players as they last forever. And they have High End CD players for cars that cost $2,000 like 20 Years ago... TV's look great but don't Last Years like Samsung TV. Receiver I'm actually scared that I'm thinking about buying this but it Fits small depth in my TV Unit. Onkyo is the real Champion, plays 4 Ohms on All Channels no problem. Monolith Towers and Subs are all mostly 4 Ohm. 32 Bit DAC, High Resolution Audio & Audiophile grade Capacitors. Denon only has 24 bit DAC and no high resolution audio.

I wonder if my speakers are suitable for this Sony. My speakers are from Rogers: Fronts (towers) LS613 - 6 Ohm/180W. Center Rc450 - 6 Ohm/120W. Surrounds Rc450 - 6 Ohm/90W. Excellent review. I bought this a few days ago based on overwhelmingly positive reviews and the price point. My issue is I have no idea how to do all those adjustments so I tend to leave it as is. For example, I probably won't bother with the distance set up. It seems like receiver instructions assume you already have a good foundation of the terms and concepts so they just gloss over the steps and assume you'll figure out the rest. Do you know of any resources that go into a deep dive that's for an old fart beginner like me? Either tech is getting way more complicated or I'm getting old. lol Again, great review. I'm going to take a look through your other videos.

Your assessment of the Sony receiver was spot on, I too had to add treble and a little bass. The auto calibration didn’t work for me either, but neither did it on my Yamaha. I have movie scenes that I reference, as well as music to get the sound I’m looking for. Once I find it I jot down my preferred settings for receiver in a booklet. The one thing your review can’t give is the longevity of Sony receivers, besides the 2 I have owned I have referred others to buy them. So far no one I know has had any problems.

Sony's reputation is odd. They are known for being drivers of innovation in so many different kinds of tech and media. Yet they are almost never considered the best. I wonder if it is often because their prices are often not super high when it comes to audio stuff. As if they are cheaper than what is considered high end, so people assume the sound just isn't superb. In all my years, every product I bought from Sony always did its job and was beyond what I expected. Yet they are still considered somewhat entry level by audiophile standards. I am a firm believer that a decent A/V Receiver /amp with a well paired complementary speaker set(2.1, 5.1, 7.1, whatever you run.) is more important to getting a great sound than going with top line equipment. Unless you are building a sound room/studio/theater from the ground up to control variables that improve or decrease sound quality, or unless you need more audio emphasis, Sony will still do almost everything you need short of professional applications. Maybe I am bias, but Sony's audio products often feel shockingly underrated in general.

I think sony ain't really bad for my personal take I had a Sony receiver when HDMI was just coming out it was the new thing and I always calibrated Sony as one of those back in those days something that can really drive your speakers but give you just enough quality sound to enjoy I also called them a tank in some ways you can put the most unefficient speakers on the receiver and it will run it like it's no tomorrow and of course I had a 5.1 system it was my first theater I ever owned and I had a lot of mix Max speakers I would say as well but Sony paired them very well together that was my beginnings I would love to hear Sony's Atmos capabilities as well but I know they did well with the HDMI when it was just beginning they probably done pretty well with Atmos.

I was playing Ghostbusters and the theme song was missing vocals. I clicked 2 Ch/Multi button and it seemed to fix it. Is there anything I should do to get the best sound out of just my simple setup? The vocals come out of the center channel speaker is mist sound modes and you don't have a center channel speaker that's why you didn't hear any vocals. You fixed it by changing the sound mode.

I bought a refurbished denon S650h for my monitor audio bronze 5.1 system. Its about the same price as the sony i believe. Its honestly not bad. Adjusted my SW db to +1 from +5.5 then +2.5, and notice I have to increase the master volume to keep the subs from going standby.
