- The General Motors plant in Oshawa, On has a rich history of building vehicles that goes back over 100 years. Today, this is the only GM plant that builds both Silverado light duty and Silverado Heavy Duty on the exact same production line.
Watching new Silverados come together was interesting and of course we want to hear from you. Let us know your thoughts on Chevy Silverado production in the comments below.

Thanks for the tour, Steve and Howard. I toured the Oshawa car plant in ‘88 when they were building Buicks. Fewer robots at that time, of course. The “test” at the end of the line then was a room about 100 feet long, where the worker would goose the car, then slam on the brakes. Good to see GM still building in Oshawa.
My 05 Silverado still kickin today. One of the most reliable trucks ever made
Gm and reliable, 2 words that don’t go together anymore.
Really enjoyed this tour. I took delivery last week on my 3500 srw and it was made in Oshawa. I ordered it back on September 4 and was afraid that the strike would delay it. Thank goodness Oshawa settled their strike faster than UAW America did. Love my new truck and your tour. Thanks.
Great video! Especially, as I am picking My 3500 up from the dealer this Wednesday. Really interesting to watch those large robots place the cab and box with such speed and accuracy. Thank You!
That was excellent, thanks for the tour of how those trucks are made! 🇨🇦proud cheers
Love it. I was on a tour of that plant as a kid in the 60s. Lots of good changes. Im going to look at my vin today. 🇨🇦
I work in the oshawa plant, we are very proud of our products. Strong brother and sisterhood, best job I ever had.
Hi Guys. Native to Oshawa, it's great to see Trucks being built again in Oshawa.
Absolutely beautiful GM trucks being built at that plant. Thank you for making this video.
Truck Kings, This is the video I have been waiting to see. I am thrilled the Lazarus factory up and running again. GM got the very pointed message and Canadians are building pickups again!!
I would like to see Ford and Chrysler/Stellantis get back to building trucks in Canada as they both did in the past. I would also like to take this opportunity to inform Toyota that Canadians could build Tacomas just as well as Mexicans! Canada is one of the world's biggest pickup markets, we ought to be building at least as many as we buy. Now we need production of pickups with 8 foot beds within our borders! 😁 🤩
2 other big truck channels on youtube made a video tour of a production plant for chevy trucks as well. I must say yours is the best one. The others did not have the great video footage that yours did. Keep up the great work.
Nice trucks... Great video. Glad to see truck production back in Oshawa. GM has alot of history in Oshawa. Hope to see another 100 years of production.
Toured the plant with my Dad in 1989. Absolutely staggeringly huge plant. Back then the robots seemed just as impressive. I’ll never forget that day, it was amazing.
Bought a pickup back in 1989 made in that plant. If every Canadian only bought vehicles with the VIN starting with 2 our economic problems would be over.
I love those Chevy HD's and knowing some are built here is even sweeter.
My 23' 1500 came from there! Super cool to see the plant. I love my truck too!
The complexity of these plants are amazing to watch. These new Silverado’s are looking great. I’m seriously considering one now.
Make sure it's got 4Low, the dealers are just now figuring out the scam. Doesn't seem important until you need it.
It's been a while since I read the McLaughlin story, but he was very skilled at building axes. It was a good story about the history of GM Canada. The Canadian Military Pattern trucks were a surprise to me as it was GM and Ford Canada that built trucks to a British military specification.
No grass or solar panels on the roof of that factory.
For a Canadian channel I have to say this is my favorite channel of all time. This channel is way better than TFL trucks or whatever the hell they're channels called I don't really care for the people that are on that channel they're just show offs in my opinion anyway. You have to really watch a lot of their videos to understand what I'm talking about but I have an after I've noticed that I stopped watching their channel all together. This channel is truly a thousand times better than there just the way you and your father introduce yourselves in the beginning of every video and the way you guys talked throughout the whole video you guys aren't showing off in any way shape or form the way you guys do your videos is very unique. This is GMC guy here from Boston Massachusetts much love from the states
Much appreciated.
Such an interesting and informative video. As automotive journalists I'm guessing visiting the plant was incredibly rewarding.
Kinda cool that I am on my 2nd vehicle built in Oshawa. First one was a 2001 Lumina and the second one is a 2008 GMC Sierra. You guys build good stuff. Keep it up!
I only buy Canadian made if I can. the Silverado is looking like a good buy
Totally agree, big reason why we bought Honda crv. Mic👍
Very cool video. Being from the states though, I’ll be honest, I’m glad my truck was built in flint. Just as I’m sure my Canadian friends prefer a truck built there. Nice that the demand is high enough to support multiple factories in different countries!
My Sierra HD came from Flint as well. My next one I hope will also be made in Flint. And I am Canadian in Canada
@@marcelo403polo2 why do you prefer Flint?
@@pryme2013 Other then emission problems before deleting it, there was no any other problems at all. This is not my first Sierra build in Flint. Plus many of us ,specially here in prairies don't give a s..t about Ontario and specially quebec
@@marcelo403polo2 fair enough. So far so good on my flint truck also
There's a big demand for GM pickup trucks
They have a plant here in silao Mexico and they supply local market and US market, just the 1500 tho
They make the bed cover parts in a magna factory at my city
Glad to see Oshawa wasn't idled. I remember reading about those plans a few years ago, but it's good they retooled it to keep using it.
Lordstown, Ohio wasn't so lucky...
A disproportionate percentage of auto production is taking place in Mexico. American and Canadian workers and communities are suffering as a result.
@@rightlanehog3151
You're not wrong.
@@walterbryan1798 Neither are you!
Lordstown only made one model, and it was making a car in a segment where GM doesn't place a great deal of importance. Sad. They have some of the best engineers in the world, but they build all their vehicles to a price point, which is a problem they've always had.
A great tour and plant information. Thanks guys!
I simply love this video!!! Thanks for showcasing Canadian made vehicles!!!!!
My vin starts with a 2 so they built mine in Canada 🇨🇦 and shipped it all the way down here to south Louisiana!!!!!
That was cool, wish it was an hour long! Incredible automation, i can't even fathom how much work goes into programing those robots.
I took a tour about 5 years ago, the size and amount of robots still blows minds
Proud to say I’m part of this team
The Canadians absolutely kick a$$! Really do a great job 👍
We are on vacation in Canada right now. I’ve learned to speak Canadian… EH 😂 Canada is a beautiful country!!!
I am absolutely loving my ‘23 1500 duramax. It’s an animal and so so so good on fuel I’ve been averaging 7.7l/100km
Great video Track King you guys are doing awesome job.
Thanks for the updated tour video
That was nice guys, thanks.
Bought a 2024 3500hd srw and it was assembled there..thanks for the video.
Always wondered what happens to garbage after it gets picked up, now i know it goes to build GM products in Oshawa
Thats awesome to see, very impressive
Love my Chevy HD! Thanks to the hard working folks of Oshawa CA!
I've had 4 trucks built at Oshawa, a '94 - '97 - '99 and an '04, all extended-cab short-beds, as well as my 2011 5th gen Camaro SS was built there as well, all top quality built and no issues!
Thats Awesome Steve... I wanna check that place out..thtd be a great trip..Right on Truck King!! Awesome video
That’s awesome that they designed the plant to be able to go from 1500’s to 2500/3500’s, I don’t think they can do that in the states.
Great segment guys
My 2020 equinox was build in Canada and i see great build quality
great video guys!
Awesome video👍
Good to hear GM is still building trucks in Oshawa rather than in Mexico like Ford and Toyota!
Mexicos were they build the Tahoe and suburbans
@@asherdie The Tahoe and Suburban are manufactured in Arlington, Texas.
Really interesting information regarding the VIN code
Very Excellent Video!!! 😁
Great video
This was cool to see
That's an amazing place!
Awesome video! Love my Duramax and ZR2 trucks!
Pretty sweet they use the same old building and don't leave it to rot.
I have a 1982 Pontiac Safari wagon that was built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦. That car was built by Scandinavians, Irish, English, French, Germans, Scottish, Welsh, Italiand, Hungarians, Poles, and Eastern Europeans.
I have a friend who own Chevrolet and Pontiac cars. One owns a 1969 Chevrolet Impala Custom coupe that was built on October 11th, 1968. Sold by Dueck Chevrolet Oldsmobile on December 11th, 1968.
Also saw a 1970 Chevrolet Kingswood Estate, Caprice Classic sedan, 1971 Pontiac Safari wagon, Chevrolet Kingswood wagon, Caprice Classic sedan. All the cars have a number 1, which is Oshawa.
1981 to present country is Canada 🇨🇦 and 1 is Oshawa.
Wish they'd give Canadians a bit of a discount relative to US pricing. Base trims start at 37K USD vs 47K CAD. Oddly enough the 2024 Trax is a crazy deal for Canadians at 24K CAD vs 21K USD but that car is mostly Korean.
Am proud to state that my son too is a part of your Team ❤
I live in Milton Ontario and that plant is down the road on the 401. My 2023 Silverado LTZ was built there and I am proud it was built in Canada.
I just ordered on a few weeks ago. I hope it is made there. Amazing factory
Best plant in North America 🤝
Awesome to see the Silverado being built, would love a 3500 cheers from Australia MATE
Thanks 👍
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 proud. Thanks for this video. Passed Oshawa so many times but didn’t know. Thought it was just GMC Terrain!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's awesome to see where the Silverado 3500HD I ordered on May 15th, 2023 was built. Now if they could actually ship it in a reasonable amount of time to my dealer that would great but it was completed on July 28th and has a shipping date of August-December. If I have to wait much longer, someone else will have to buy it. I told the dealer when I ordered it I needed it by September 15th because we head South for the winter and I would need time to put some miles on it before towing our 5th Wheel. They assured me I would have it before then. Now It's not looking very promising!
Awesome video guys. You have to come visit Oakville Assmbly. Very similar. Maybe after it goes EV?
There also built in Forte Wayne Indiana
It should also be known that Oshawa was the best awarded (quality)truck plant in the world.
Because of their versatility pick up trucks are the only means of transport an average family needs.
so glad GM opened it back up after 2 years of being idle.
Great video. I just got a new used Chevy truck. Haven’t owned one in 30 years. I love it. Wish Chevy would fix the little things like AFM and DFM. But otherwise I ❤ it. Mine was made in USA. I don’t know what plant? Wish it was Canada.
My 06 Silverado came from Oshawa. Her name is Sue and was made November 11th 2005. Theres a sticker on the gauge cluster trim thing that says name and date.
I love the assortment of truck info you bring to your channel. This was VERY interesting to watch.
Question...whats with the sleeves and hand covers you both are wearing? Is that PPE to protect from sparks, etc?
exactly. the robot welders spray sparks
Anyone that works in our body shop (ie: all bare metal ) must wear Kevlar sleeves, jeans and boots. And a TON of other ppe even just to walk through the gate. Even if you're not touching parts! We don't mess around ❤
Thanks man! I figured. My brother is in manufacturing and cant have an MRI because he has metal in his eyes from work. You guys are legit!@@Redruby2600
The first truck I bought was a 1988 Sierra and it was assembled in Oshawa, the second truck I brought was a 2009 Sierra and I believe it was assembled in Lansing, Mi. I used to be a trucker and often though that that Oshawa was doomed because it was on the wrong side of Toronto, most of the parts would have to be delivered through Toronto and deal with all the delays on the 401 and then the same thing with the finished vehicles heading for the states.
95% of finished trucks go by rail
My vin starts with a 1.
That makes me happy.
It’s a 2019 2500HD L5P
I've has 15 Chevy trucks with my current being a 2015 Silverado LTZ, Z71 4X4 crew cab. Has every option and only 53,000 miles.
The guy that walked you around is my manager that's kinda cool
My 2022.5 1500 was built in Oshawa. White RST Z71 with the new 10 speed and no DFM
Loved the tour!! So cool!
I toured that plant in 1992!
Maybe someday when they make a vehicle that is esthetically pleasing to the eye i might consider buying it.😢
I have a 70 C10 and a 70 Chevelle that was built in that plant!!
Curious why more plants don't mix LD/HD production. Yes, it adds complexity to the build line, but the flexibility seems like a good benefit. I'm sure the number crunchers have worked out the details and there are valid reasons to keep things separate.
Had a 2019 L5P and recently got a 2024 gen 2 L5P. Older one got better fuel economy. That said, it had four fewer gears, but also less HP and torque…. Maybe the new one will get better with time. Both are excellent HD trucks!
I've had a 2001, 2003, and now a 2007 Silverado 1500 all built in Oshawa and I know that is why they lasted so long. None of that American build quality🤣 I do live in Washington state. My current 07 has just under 200,000 miles and the others high quality and long lasting and I bought them new. Thanks for the video.
Just checked my 23 gas 3500. It starts with the vin 2! Super awesome. I would have to say the fit and finish and really nice. I am curious where the engines are assembled
I believe St Catharines GM just down the road from Oshawa
What was with all the Silverado's stored up at the fairgrounds in Orono? did they finally get shipped out?
My 00 was built there. Still going at 371K!!
Oshawa isn't the only plant marrying truck bodies to frame with Fanuc robots. Flint, MI assembly has been doing it for years.
Glad I bought a 2024 2500 Silverado long bed. Made in the USA!
I can almost see them rusting on the line 😂
My 2020 Silverado was assembled in Indiana.
Ya a friend of mine his uncle is a security guard at the gm plant in Michigan the plant is closed for what I here there are new cars in the building cars going down the production line and the line is stopped cars getting put together the frame, body, engine and trans this is going back years
Love the built-in rust features that if your from the North your truck just falls apart. Are they still doing that.🤔
Chevy needs to stop the afm it blew my engine you don’t buy a truck to get good mpg
No afm on their HD trucks
if you don't want it delete it or disable it
Only light duty trucks have afm
A softeare delete does not solve the issue. The lifters still fail.
I have my gripes about modern GM, but it's not GM that's require their pickups to get good mpg. It's the EPA & C.A.F.E. that's causing vehicle makers to jump through hoops. Left to their own devices, vehicle makers could easily make 500k mile engines that got 15% less fuel economy.
I look for one of those trucks but sadly many of us can't afford them anymore!
Are high school auto shop went down to the Oshawa plant in around 1987
They were building chev ? cars at the time, pretty sure. Great time. Didn't see robots at the time. 😮
I've got GM truck examples from Mexico, Kentucky and Canada. The Kentucky built truck is built better e.g. body fitment, fewer electrical issues, no mechanical issues... But the Canuck is a close second.
My 2023 chevy Colorado Trail Boss was made in Missouri!
Oshawa and Flint truck assembly us the exact method of assembly the only difference is Oshawa has a Flex Body shop which csn build different types of vehicles
1- 1500 Fort Wayne
1- 2500-5500 Flint
2- 1500-3500 Oshawa
3- 1500 Sileo
No plant codes needed.
First digit.
