15:28 Yes I can believe it. Quail can be tough little birds. I've shot valleys that will keep flying for hundreds of yards before they die. I've absolutely folded them they bounce off the ground numerous times then get up and start running, pop em again, fold them a second time, only to watch them get up a second time and scramble away. I'm sitting there just going what.... like how?

we could really use that rain right now in Yavapai.
    2 questions:
    1. What is your favorite load for quail and why?
    2. Using a pump 12ga. I don't see anything about the number of shells you can hold in a mag tube for quail in AZ. I know for the migratory stamp the fed reg is 3 shells total max, but what about quail in AZ?
    Thanks!

I shoot a 28ga. I shoot 7.5 or 8 shot. I'm really not picky. To me it's more about gun fit than load. You need to refer to the state regulations on the number of shells question. They will spell it out for you. I understand it the same way you do but you always need to check the regulations...cough, cough(can't give you advice where legal matters are involved) Hope you understand :)

Thanks for the show and tell, followed by commentary! The cautionary word on desert travel in rain and the possibility of flash floods is very important intel. Can you talk about other risks unique to the southwest quail habitat in a future video? My hunting partner is hunting In Arizona right now and texted me yesterday about taking one of his dogs to the vet after being gored by a javelina. He also had a run in with a Mojave Green Rattlesnake. We know the risks of high arid country north of you (porkys ,timber rattler dens, wolves, etc).

This is a cool vid. Its like a hunting diary. Really appreciate your thoughts and commentary. I began hunting gambels 2023 season in northwest phoenix area solo, no dog and its challenging especially when youre in a new area. Thanks for posting.

Thank you! I need to do another one. They can be a fun bird to hunt if you learn where to go and what to look for. How are the numbers on the NW side? Numbers are pretty good on the East side where I mostly roam

Great stuff! As an Alabama boy growing up chasing Bobwhites and hoping one day to have the opportunity to chase your dessert birds, this information is great. Keep them coming!

Nice video. Appreciate hearing your thoughts. It would be nice to have a private discussion about where you are geographically in the state. Looks like around Oracle…..

Tough conditions that day. You saw birds and got to hunt some anyways. Great video.

I'm in the U.P. and run pointers and a setter for grouse and woodcock here, go to MT for sharptail and huns in Sept, bobwhite in KS in Nov and desert quail in NM in December. I often thought for those desert birds, and my dogs handle everything pretty good mind you, if I hunted desert quail mostly, I'd have a couple working cockers. I've had 5 shorthairs, two Brittany's and other setters but Cockers would be the deal I'm thinking even over pointers. Maybe I'm just slowing down with age. Maybe

LOL...Nah. I have friends that run both pointers and flushers. I haven't hunted them that way but it sure seems like it would be a fun way to hunt those little buggers...assuming they don't run to much🤣

Great video! I appreciate you going through the thought process and giving pointers, definitely helps me as a rookie see what I’m doing correctly and what I can add to help us have more success!

I've been binging upland videos because we're getting a Pudelpointer this summer and now I'm dreaming of all the trips I can take. Have had a GSP before, now lab (retired). Have done SD pheasants and sharpies. But AZ has been on my list since I visited a friend in Phoenix two years ago and just stared at the Gambel's in his backyard every day. Is it reasonable to expect to have some success if I make the trip out and just escout or talk to contacts thru Quail Forever. Or is it genuinely worth hiring a guide for a couple days or the trip (one that would let me run my own dog). Just looking for your best opinion.

Hi Jack! Thanks for watching!! It truly depends on what you are looking for, how much time you have, and what your expectations are. If you have a week or more I think you can figure it out on your own with eScouting and contacts in QF. Gambels aren't that hard to find in AZ. They seem to be everywhere. I know that's not true but I don't have issues finding them. Scalies and Mearns are a little different for me as they are in the Southern part of the state and I live around Phx. If you only have a weekend then definitely hire a guide. Ultimately you want to find birds and it may take a day or 2 to zero in on what to look for so if you have the time it can be done on your own with some friends pointing you in the right direction and then paying attention when you locate birds. There are some Great guides in AZ that really know their stuff and are very helpful if your time is limited. I typically don't hire a guide myself when I go out of state to hunt. Part of the adventure to me is figuring it out on my own.

Thanks for the show and tell. As a guy who's only hunted gamble's a handful times, but wants to hunt them more, I appreciate the intel.
As an aside, I'd be interested to know what gear you use while chasing these dessert birds. Guns, ammo, vest, boots... Whatever you'd like to share.
Another great vid! You're about to have a bunch of subscribers if you keep it up!
