Juan's Basement is back after ten years. Recorded February 14th, 2018, John Maus performs songs from "Screen Memories", "Love Is Real" and "We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves"
"10 years, 40 years, 200 years. How about I'm doing none of them."
I imagine John Maus being the most lonely and most beloved man on this planet simultaneously.
It's how it feels when you don't belong to an orchestra or city especially when you just do what you want. It's a lonely fireplace.
I miss him.
@@212productions6 same I wish he would come out with another album too
@@HighPriestess_Archive did something happen to him?
@@catwoe5707he got cancelled by association with Ariel Pink now he too afraid to show his face
I've listened to this set every day for a week.
hahaha me too....I dunno why but everyday and similar time lol
funny seeing you here
currently doing this
Ive done it for two weeks
JUST FOR
ONE NIGHT
and now I'll miss her
MY WHOLE LIFE
I just love that lyric man
I don’t get what that means?
@@Hqp4ryit can mean a lot of things, it's about love and loosing it.
Absolutely adore how each time Maus answers a question, he replies like he has a dozen guns aimed at his head and if he doesn't give the most all-encompassing answer of all time, he'll be shot up
incredibly humble person that man. what a gem.
It's john maus. What do you expect? Hmmmmm. The guy is an absolute rock and roll master.
perfect summation
He's a real philosopher , you can't expect for less than this :))
yeah that's called ADHD

Dat a H3H3 reference I herd?!
I'm just going to pretend it was.
Kathryn Pritchard YIKES
h3h3 is so embarrassing
R.I.P. Joe Maus.
Safe travels, Joe.
Gone way too soon. Not forgotten.
wtf bro???
@@phronesis1901 John maus' brother sadly passed away not too long ago, he was only 30.
I'm so heartbroken, I got to meet him outside one of their shows, he was such a nice person.
its so awful. i hope john is doing alright
@@thecitizenjoan I saw them last year in France, loved the bass lines of Joe, still thinking about John and his team .... :/
He should record a live album, his songs go really well with this type of agressive vocals
I was very disappointed to find out the album versions don't have these vocals
Yep
So strange to hear him talk about his mortality and his brothers.... months before his brother passed.
LOL this guy sings like he's in physical pain, it's fascinating.
It didn't use to be like that. I suspect cigs
It truly is fascinating. Quite a sight
+Liban Osman Abdulle Why,
He is because he's hitting himself in the face sometimes
it seems like he is the biggest ian curtis fan hahahah

Synth Lord Maus. Praise be to him.
One in a lifetime artist. Listening to this live performance saturated my blood with adrenaline. Thank you John!
i love his performance a lot, he really knows to make some songs better than the album versions
John Maus made me go back to college.
What do you mean?
@@crabapple5248 because John went back to college to complete his phd
Wow, Bennington sounds 90% like the album/video version, but Cop Killer... John sounds like he's quite intent on killing every cop in sight. And that's... AGAINST THE LAW-AWWW-AWWWWW!
That song is about killing the things within our minds which keep us (add noun or adjective)
If he wanted to be straight forward he wouldn't be john maus.
killing unarmed black people is also
AGAINST
THE LAAAAAW
@@declineofthewest. yes look at the crime statistics
@@streethalo uuf, tell them to stop commiting crimes then.
Hey, that's so cool, I wish when I go down to my basement I would find John Maus there.
wait...come to think about it that might be a little creepy
Lol
Go for the basement touchdown
I see the combine coming
I love how eager John is to get philosophical, and his band just lowkey finds it funny how excited he gets
thats what you get when the main man of the band taught philosophy at the university of hawaii
And his bro had endured decades of John's pontifications
Bennington is probably the closest Maus ever got to the perfect pop song
So far
That's his eternal constant dream, is perfecting the perfect pop song.
Cool as Ice
Don't be a body>>>>
I can only imagine what its like to tour with Maus and listen to him argue every day lol
I feel like john is serious at the end but not taken very seriously....too bad because what he has to say on love is deep and powerful. Keep sending out your resonance John! I'm vibing!
rest in peace Joseph Maus.
I just adore how soaked into his music he is
With sweat
Music to punch yourself in the head to. Never realised that would be my favourite kind of music.
RIP Joe Maus! :( :(
'Do not be reconciled with this world.' Love JM's philosophy and outlook and his idiom- like an Old Testament preacher...
Can't believe Joe died in the past two days. Pretty tragic, these guys were having such a pure, honest good time
omg. :((( how?!
Did we ever find out how?
His obituary said heart defect but before the official news came out apparently John's ex-wife posted on instagram claiming they were all on drugs and he died of an overdose but I really don't know if that should be considered a valid source. .-.
@@joethomas3249 I assumed it was drugs since he was only 30.
"The world is on its head. Don't be reconciled with this world."
Bennington sounds better than album version, I am surprised. My favorite Maus track
Reincarnation of Ian Curtis
XQC on the keys
John Maus + the live band helps to enhance the absolute genius behind these tracks. Maus is an excellent front man, I love his recordings but I wish he would incorporate this energy and rawness into them. Truly incredible live, I find that the live videos are much more satisfying due to the intensity.
Agreed, the studio recordings were haunting but I guess miking it up within a live setting makes it more echoey and the intensity of his screams and wailings just seems enhanced instantly.
agreed that the live tracks have more energy!!!!
Cop killer is hard💪💯
jonas nguza frr
You either get this sound or you don't.
I once fell in love in Bennington. I was working at my Aunt and Uncles piano camp raking rocks and trimming hedges.. She lived in the John Gardner house which is right next to Robert Frosts grave. We would meet at the monument. It lasted a summer. Magic place magic time magic fireflies on Mt Anthony.
Matt do you still love her?
Brandon Rimmer I love all the women I have ever loved
this is beautiful
@@Matt-ml8ul dont tell your wife that!
I have no idea but I can relate
Just discovered this dude. He is brilliant! Very unique sound
John "Do ya know what I mean?" Maus
Do you guys know that Charls Carroll turned down drumming for Maus to do World Peace?
Can you prove this ?
Link or bs
hwuat
Also they seem a little too alike, I feel like they would clash artistically
Really? Any proof of this being true?
This is amazing. The drummer is the catalyst. He could overdo it but he keeps it simple, like the album but makes it badass. And he’s drinking a lagunitas. Wish they did pets. That’s my fave.
I want to take classes taught by Prof John Maus
rip joe :( sorry for the loss. Great great band.
He has no equal
RIP Joe Maus.
"10 years, 20 years, 200 years how about I ain't doing none of them"
please be sweet and explain the significance of such a statement.
@@nicholasskaldetvind4695 @Brendan Pratt The name of the skit is The Man Who Would Never Be What They Made Him To Be.

Loved this, Pitchfork! Keep on bringing those cool artists! (yes, i'm looking at Ariel Pink)
John Maus
God rest your soul, Joseph Maus..
John is talking serious and beautiful shit and everyone else is like meeh
John seems to be more social, calm and even less intelectual than previously. Even when his performance was a reflexion of extreme pain in the interview he appear happy which was a surprise thing. I wish him the best and world peace.
WORLD PEACE
WORLD PEACE = WORLD DOMINATION
John maus is tremendously fascinating and sublime I utterly adore his thoughts and music

That cop killer performance was incredible

John interviews like a cross between Bob Pollard and Macho Man Randy Savage...
a general observations and questions:
john got himself a band
this is the first interview I've ever watched of john that I completely understood everything he was talking...kinda so his band has either grounded him, or he's mellowed out since he's gotten older
what happened to the hot guy on the laptop that played in San Francisco
Juan is the guitarist in Small Black
John's brother is playing bass, only slaps it with one finger sometimes
the drummer is wearing a hoodie, probably from american apparel or a random skate company
Do your best was sick.
like the use of red and blue light.
He spent the last couple years on his own in a Minnesota farm, so maybe the lack of outward interactions took the edge off him?
I wish i could see him live when he was solo only with he's laptop like you said
Kevin Twin John actually stated in one of his newer interviews that what you said is one of his fears about his new listeners ..... he just doesn’t want to disappoint them :/
@@kevintwin7777 Same. I Wasn't old enough then, I'm assuming its the same for you. But its cool to see his progression. I saw him play in San Francisco this year and he's still ridiculously amazing live.
Amazing music. I am 48 and it is one of the best stuff I have heard since the mid 90's
The Combine is such a tune. They nailed it. RIP JOE
Ugh. When he talks about the song"Pets" and the point where John and Joe's eyes meet. It's heartbreaking to think of the tragedy that is to come.
this guy was NOT equipped to interview john maus
Then again who is?
2 mics
rest in peace, joe
Start a cult please
His interviews are never long enough 😭
Will forever love maus
wish he played believer
standing on the edge of forever as I take this last line of coke.
Wish I had some coke right now 😔
Best time to do it haha
@@reservoirdude92 Heyyyy man it's you again. I dropped the coke habit soon after my original comment. Only on certain occasions might I have a line or two.
How do I play in juans basement

bennington here was one of the most powerful performances i've ever seen. hope john is doing okay
The live version of Combine is always so good
Rip Joe maus :(
incredible live recording , the camera and the lights and everything
Life changing set right here. Tremendous performance.
cant believe this was live
wow.. WOW
Taking a relaxing soak in the tub. Some candles and incense going for a calming atmosphere, listening to this. Thinking how I still love the girl from bennington, even though I'll never see her eyes. I love those fucking eyes.
I really love those fucking eyes
I feel your pain, bro
Maus doesn't set the bar for being interviewed, he is the bar
I wish they’d release this as a live album
This was epic. I think it's their best stuff on YT. I especially love Cop Killer and Bennington.
watching this for the 50th time and just realising how awesome the camera angles are edited man, fricking sick
A hugely intelligent unhinged philosopher with a synth and a microphone
Goth without being goth. I love John Maus. 🖤🖤🖤🖤
He's a goth in a normy costume.
Isn't there a saying that all the real goths are goths in denial?
RIP Joe Maus. My heart goes out to these gentlemen. These guys are saints and nothing short of brilliant.
RIP Joe
RIP Joe
I can understand why this band dosen't get as much publicity as they should. They are good!
john maus free associating in response to vague questions about obscure post modern philosophy >>>>
I imagine he's like that everyday.
I've been binging interviews waiting for someone to bring up hauntology to John.
John's not gonna be able to sing when he's 50 from all that screamin
Austin Bennett at least he's screaming from his chest voice mostly.
I'm pretty sure he already uses autotune for his concerts
Wow... That's all I can say.... WOW
(but yes I have been watching this for 2 years now)
"Combine" is absolute perfection
I seriously love this performance of John Maus. You hear the pure quality of his live act. Just cop killer - amazing!
John Maus is fuckin deep
I see most people are here for Bennington 😏
Sorry for Your Loss John.
you see here that John Maus is a passionate individual, like Nietzsche; thoughts matter, the meaning of life (or what we project onto it) is of great importance, he is aware of these things. He feels everything in his performance, even to the point of mild self injury....
....
Mirin that reflective jacket w2c
this is so good... i've listened to this through like 4 or 5 times now

This band is amazing, I am in love.
