I agree. Several people and even some reactors have commented negatively about the video’s simplicity, one calling it amateurish. But sometimes a highly produced video can be distracting and the music itself gets lost. I’ve seen many reactors for other songs focusing too much on the video and trying to figure out the video’s message that they lose focus on the song, the artist and their performance. It’s especially bad when it’s a really distracting video, or even fan made video, that has nothing to do with the song.
There was a live stream of this song that made its way to the cyber world. James Thiel asked (and asked) Toby (co-writer) if he could put a well-produced version out. Toby gave his ok. That version is live with just Toby on piano and a cello and violin. You can find it on James Thiel's TH-cam channel. I like both versions a lot.
Angelina has always had control of what she sings and how she sings. In addition to the 150+ covers Angelina has sung over the years of her career - she has also been writing songs since she was 10 years 0ld - So far 13 have been released: Oslo, What is Life?, Shield, Million Miles, 7th Heaven, Love Don't Let Me Go, Now I'm The Fool, Fire and Rain, All My Fault, Good in Goodbyes, Diamond, Our Time, and Bad Valentine. Angelina has stated that she has written about 100 songs that have yet to be released. Her songs are taken from her Journal writings. When she was 10/11 she rewrote the Lyrics to Amy Winehouse's Back to Black and Rehab to make them more age appropriate at that time. In addition, Angelina performed an unreleased original song Princess of Ruins that she has only performed in concert - if and when that is officially released it will be her 14th original.

The interesting thing about Angelina Jordan is that you can see how a true artist is formed. Just as the great painters of the past began by copying the works of their predecessors, so AJ began by assimilating what the greats of jazz, blues and soul had sung before her, from Billie Holiday to Nina Simone, via Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Amstrong, Dianah Washington, Etta James, Elvis Presley and, more recently, Nora Jones, Amy Winehouse, Adèle and so on. In this way, she has "found in tradition a reasoned sense of her own individuality" (Gustave Courbet).
The acoustic song that you may remember hearing about was probably her cover of _If I Were A Boy_ which was also great.

She dropped another original song at her show last Friday "Thank you". There she showed her story teller quality with her first Reggae Song. She's a very versatile artist 👍👏

The original release was from a live perfomance with Toby Gad, who was one of the co-writers with Angelina...that was more acoustic. This is the official video, which dropped a few weeks ago. As far as influences, you can add Elvis, and all the great female jazz and torch singers, and a couple of great pop divas for good measure. She turns 19 in January of 2025.

Some background on this song:
Bad Valentine is one of 8 songs Angelina worked on and recorded with Producer Toby Gad 1-1/2 to 2 years ago when she was working on her album. He was one of several producers she was working with at the time.
However last summer for reasons unknown, a 6 song EP was released instead of an album so obviously some already recorded songs had to be left unreleased.
Toby was very disappointed when Angelina told him that none of the songs they worked on were on the EP especially since Republic Records was apparently very excited about them. We found out just the other night at her concert that this caused a little tension. However late last year Toby began working on an album called Piano Diaries in which he recorded new, simpler versions of earlier hit songs he cowrote and produced. One of them was If I Were a Boy, made famous by Beyonce. He asked Angelina to perform this song on his album. They also performed the song together live several times earlier this year including in London and in May at the Hotel Cafe in LA. At the Hotel Cafe appearance they also performed a stripped down version (piano, cello, violin) of Bad Valentine and Toby said the song was going to be released soon (Sept 20)
That’s the first time any of us had heard about the song and is probably the version you were made aware of. The song is released by Toby’s label so he must have obtained the rights to it from Republic. Unless this song happened to have been re-recorded recently, what we are hearing in this video was recorded a while back. Therefore it’s very possible that Angelina was still only 16 at the time, no more than 17. She is currently 18.

At her concert in LA this past Friday she also debuted a couple more unreleased originals.
I agree with you, her covers have always been great but going forward I would prefer to hear more of her own songs which I think is her intent.

@OleOlson121 The thing is we find out more about her all the time. Until a couple months ago we had no idea that she started working with Toby when she was 16. Also at her concert she provided a lot more backstory about songs and her life that we didn’t know about.
@@pjg58x I wonder if her recording of My Funny Valentine in Feb/22 was near the time she started working with Toby and whether its subject might have been an influence on their collaboration of Bad Valentine.
Toby said that she was 16 when she first contacted him so it was sometime in 2022. We don’t know exactly when. We also don’t know exactly when the songs that did make the EP were worked on. Maybe also in 2022 since around early March of 2023 she said her album was ready.

Toby Gad is a multi Grammy award winning songwriter and producer. He has produced award-winning hits for many of the biggest superstars in the music industry, including names like Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Demi Lovato, Beyoncé, and more. He recently produced an album of his top songs called Piano Diaries. As co-writer, he invited Angelina to perform If I Were a Boy with him at piano, and with cello, the acoustic you likely were referring to in the church. The song was originally made famous by Beyoncé in 2008, and has received over 600 million views. Most believe Angelina's version is much more intimate and emotional, and she has reimagined it rather than covered it.
Toby and Angelina also have been working on some original music, the first of which is this song. Bad Valentine is a jazzy, soulful, and powerful song that is perfectly suited for Angelina's voice. I think it has great potential to be the launching pad for the next phase of Angelina's career. Toby Gad is very influential in the industry and this collaboration is undoubtedly a huge break for Angelina, and actually for Toby as well. Angelina performed in concert in Glendale California this past week with Toby. Scott Horing from Pentatonix opened and also did a duet with Angelina. There are several videos online now that are fan made, and enhanced versions will be coming one at a time. James Thiel released the first one today. Angelina wrote new lyrics for two famous songs by Amy Winehouse, "Back to Black" and "Rehab" since it was inappropriate for a preteen to sing the original lyrics. For "Back to Black" Angelina wrote the new lyrics in the 24 hours prior to the recording, then needed just two takes.

When Adele hit the scene in the uk , she was compared to Amy winehouse . More to do with style of music rather than the voice . Angelina and Amy have both been influenced/ inspired by the same Jazz artists of the past . Not surprising the similarities in their singing style but just as Adele . Angelina has a completely different voice to Amy winehouse .
Certainly does have a different voice. She was inspired by Adele and Amy and said she is honored to be compared so I guess we all can except it.
