Used to know Tim 'Nibbs' Carter a long, long time ago. Great bass player and down to Earth guy. He certainly helped to revitalise Saxon. The new album - Hell, Fire & Damnation - is great.

Probably the most underrated rock and metal band of all time. Incredibly persistent, consistent, a band that should be EASILY in the rock n roll hall of fame! Also hugely influential and cited as an influence by basically a whos who of heavy metal of the 80s, 90s, 00s and beyond

It’s never too late! I’ve been telling friends about their latest Thunderbolt and raving about the band - specifically to go back and give the albums (after Destiny) a chance because that’s when they started to get back where they were music wise.

59 and still rockin to Saxon! Was a fan back in 1980 when the NWOBHM hit. Living in Iowa, me and my friends bought all those albums from Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, Def Leppard, 79,80,81. But, MY favorite band was SAXON with those trio of 3 classic Metal albums. Great songs, Great riffs. I Always followed them thru the years, listened to each release. Finally got to see them live in 2017, front row in Atlanta.

Saxon is awesome, they’re just as good as other metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Angel Witch, Venom, Satan, and many others. Great review on an awesome heavy metal band, man, keep it up and such, kek-kek:).

Refreshing to hear someone with the honesty to point out the high points of their mid 80s output. Rare over here(UK). Now popular again due to reversion to dirty old Brit metal. The big teasers from Barnsley will always be special.

Late, 1980 saxon get my attention with wheels of steel , stong arm of the law , denim and leather , power and the glory , crusaders , then ok , but late 90s they become a brutal force till now , they maybe lack of the image of jp and tygers of pt ,iron maide, but hell yeah , they are one of the pillars oh HM

I have been a huge New Wave Of British Heavy Metal fan since I was a little kid, but some how I never heard of Saxon until my early 20's when I saw many of their videos when VH1 Classics channel came out and had a show called Metalmania. I fell in love with their music immediately. I saw videos like Strong Arm Of The Law, Dallas 1 P.M. , The Power And The Glory, And The Bands Played on, Strangers In The Night, Ride Like The Wind, and my all time favorite Saxon song to this day Princess Of The Night. I will never understand how this band never got the recognition that Judas Priest and Iron Maiden got throughout all these years. Saxon are still releasing great music and should have been much much bigger. They are a great live band even to this day. One of my other favorite songs has always been Broken Heroes.

Funny story...my old friend Ray had gotten to the record store before me and grabbed the two "better" albums of Power and the Glory and Destiny but he was kind enough to leave me the "lesser" album of Denim and Leather. Which is still my favorite album by Saxon with Play It Loud my favorite song ever by them. Thank you for doing this and showing these guys much deserved respect. Also btw my mom who is 70 absolutely loves the song Solid Ball Of Rock.

Priest had Tom Allom (produced all albums from 80 till 88) , Maiden had Martin Birch (81 till 92). In case of Saxon, they had no permanent producer. Maybe that's the reason why their rise found an end in the middle of the 80s.

I’ve been obsessed with Saxon’s music for the last 3 months after warching both this retrospective and the Metal Mythos one. So much amazing music I was missing. I agree : start from the beginning and work your way up til now, you wont be sorry. The movie heavy metal thunder is also great and has 2 amazing shows in it. Most under rated band ever.

Thanks for this very good documentary about the GREAT SAXON! It´s sad they are still underrated compared to bands like Iron Maiden or Motörhead. I remember when i first heard Denim& Leather, Wheels of Steel etc. on cheap Saxon compilation CD back in middle 90´s. I remember when bought those classic 2nd hand LPs at record stores for very cheap like 1-2 euro back then, it was cheap but it was QUALITY! Almost everybody laughted at classic Metal Music back in late 90´s and beginning of 2000´s there was about 100-150 metal heads at Saxon gig, it was kind of sad situation. Thanks Metal God, things have changed to better and Saxon can play big festival like Wacken with thousands of people! JUST REMEMBER, NEVER SURRENDER !!!

Finally, someone who stands up for "Crusader" I wore that cassette out back in the 80s and to this day, it remains my favorite from Saxon. There are NO bad Saxon albums and their monster discography is second to none. The band is still blasting out metal anthems and absolutely destroy playing live. "Give us the stage, turn on the lights, fire up the sound: We'll rock the nations!!!"

Been a fan of 'Solid Ball of Rock' for 20 years since I was a snot-nosed kid, but only found out I got the lyrics to the title rack wrong 5 years ago. You heard "Set my people free!"...I heard "Suck my feet for free" (which my teenage self thought was a kick-ass random put down). Cheers for the pointers on the next Saxon albums I need to hear.
PS, that clip of them talking to Tommy Vance (RIP) where he's giving away copies of 'Metalhead'...I remember seeing that live on the Friday Night Rock Show. Good times

Love this retrospective and absolutely love Wheels Of Steel, LAOTL, and Denim & Leather, but I have to say the downturn seemed to start with Power and the Glory. To me, although it sounded much like the previous 3 albums, it seemed to have a little less drive and energy. Losing Peter Gil all of a sudden probably didn’t help matters. After the next 2 albums came Rock The Nations, and I think they were trying hard to re-gain some old fan base with that one because a few of the songs have the old vibe to them, but by then many fans had gave up. Later on in 1991 they delivered Solid Ball Of Rock and have never looked back! Every album since has been a winner in it’s own way including their latest masterpiece Thunderbolt!

Totally agree with you in every aspect. I’m sure the problem (at that time) with Crusader was the sound. Crusader sounds a lot cheap than other competitors bands of that time. if Crusader sounded like “innocence” it could been a very successful album. By the way Saxon is my favorite band so far

Having been a fan of Saxon in the early 80s I do predictably rate that era the highest, not that long after I became an early thrash fan, never thought I would get back into Saxon after listening to some of there more promoted tracks after Crusader, the last album I bought. Then in more recent times I heard the track Sacrifice and totally loved that one ……… oh yeah bottlenecked as in using the neck of a bottle instead of fingers to play in a slide guitar style

A "bottkeneck" is another name for a guitar slide. Makes sense as this version features a lot of acoustic slide guitar.

First 8 albums are classics....In my opinion their lowest moment were bwtween 1988n and 1999,,,,Then came on stronger...THE MIGHTY SAXON, one of the best metal bands ever........And of course NWOBHM pioneers.

I am at 17 minute, and I find it funny that you haven't mentioned judas priest even once. The sound of Saxon writes JUDAS PRIEST all over it. Great band though.

Cool man! I'm so fucking tired of hearing about Iron Maiden when it comes to NWOBHM. There were SAXON, SATAN, ANGELWITCH, and many others too... Nice video man!
