No way is it the heaviest. Lock Up the Wolves is definitely a good companion album to Strange Highways . Lock Up the Wolves delivers an ancient evil vibe , and the cover art represents Vainainainomen the Finnish Wizard from the dawn of time . Strange Highways has a futuristic steel buildings , no grass , no tree left beneath forever veiled in gray skies Earth vibe. Angry Machines tried to remove the human element all together . It succeeded to the level that maybe when only our holograms remain we shall truly appreciate the Angry Machines album. For the time being the best Dio albums are the first 4 . My personal favorite song is Lock Up the Wolves. The best album covers are 1. Master of the Moon , 2. Lock Up the Wolves , 3. Dream Evil , 4. Holy Diver , 5. Last In Line , 6. Angry Machines , 7. Strange Highways , 8. Kill the Dragon , 9. Magica , 10 . Sacred Heart . The first 5 are all equally good in their own ways . 5 , and 6 are alright , number 10 is the only bad Dio album cover , it's a great album . If Murray would of graced the sleeve of Sacred Heart instead of the goofy dragon record sales would of probably doubled

Dio got his start it music before metal was even a thing. Hell, almost before rock was even a thing. He did like 50s doo wop music and shit when he was young. Crazy.

First time I saw Dio was Dec 87 (still have the ticket) at Hammersmith Odeon. In Metal especially at that time support bands would try to make a name for themselves by upstaging the main band. Maiden had famously done it to Priest on the British Steel tour leaving Halford fuming in Kerrang. So the main band would do everything to make sure the support band would not do this, giving them an inferior sound system , poor mixing by the engineer, a lame lighting and so on.
When the Dio show started the support band Warlock came out, they were at their peak having just released True as Steel. Instead of having the poor support band show they had everything, sets, lighting to the level of a main act, unheard of in this era, and they were blinding, the best performance by a support band I've seen to this day, and better than most main bands. I remember thinking as I watched this, Dio you've fucked up, you can never top this. How wrong I was, Do not only topped them, but even mentioned during to performance of how he wanted the fans to have the best quality show, nodding to the fact he helped Warlock be at their best with total confidence they wouln't outclass him. Arrogance and talent in equal measures, Dio summed up.

Wendy Dio had an estate auction in New York. She sold a LOT of his property. Luckily, we wound up with some of the original Marshall cabs used on the Holy Diver Tour and Dream Evil tours. They are currently located in Neosho, MO. If you are interested in classic Dio Memorabillia, I thought is would be a good historic point to make.

The coolest tribute to Dio I saw was when I saw Motorhead in 2015, there was a guy there who had a battle vest with only Dio patches on it.

This is easily the best retrospective episode yet!! I have been a huge massive fan of Ronnie James Dio since 1988 at barely 10 years old. I love everything that he has done in his career. I only got two chances to see Ronnie which was 1998 on the Angry Machines tour with Love/Hate , and in 2002 on the Killing The Dragon tour with Scorpions and Deep Purple. I got to meet Ronnie in 1998 on my first time seeing him , and to this day he is still the greatest musician that I have ever met. His reputation on being great to the fans big time is true. I still hate that he has been gone over ten years , and it still doesn't feel real. I agree with you that albums like Dream Evil, Killing The Dragon, and especially Strange Highways are PHENOMENAL albums. I also agree with you about the holograms. To each their own, but I want to see a real live show. Ronnie James Dio got to be in three LEGENDARY bands , and made timeless music with Rainbow,Black Sabbath, and Dio. Not many musicians have, and that is how amazing Ronnie was. The one thing that I am really happy for Ronnie is that he did get to end his career with the band that he always wanted to with which is Black Sabbath. Even though it was called Heaven And Hell, it was still Black Sabbath. I remember seeing old interviews with him from the past and being asked how he wanted to end his career, and he always said with Black Sabbath. I really enjoyed this episode, and sorry for the really long reply. I love Ronnie James Dio that much, and I know that I am not the only one.

It is great to hear a retrospective that gives Strange Highways the props it deserves. Criminally underrated - I go on to think it is actually the best album in the Dio catalogue. “Bury my bones on the moon! If you never should find me it would be too soon!”

Probably my favorite retrospective. Strange Highways is amazing album. Like I earlier told I'm gen X so I was there when Holy Diver came out. Yes I was just a kid but somebody has that tape and I fell in love. When Last In Line came out I was thinking that this is probably greatest band ever. I found his Rainbow and Sabbath stuff back then too and was blown away. I love first four Dio albums so much. There's fillers but I don't care. That voice is so powerful. I love his later albums too and I never skip songs from any Dio album. And yes Glen Hughes is amazing. That's why found myself digging Black Country Communion. I do check new bands. "Newer" bands that I love are High On Fire, Toxic Holocaust, Vektor,Tribulation, Power Trip, Mastodon, Ghost, Black Breath and Electric Wizard. Havok is pretty good too. Appreciate your time and work for doing this. RIP Ronnie James Dio!
    Cheers from Finland, Petri

I've been a Ronnie James Dio follower for the years of Man on the silver mountain till the final trilogy cd that came with a little portfolio history about his early days w elf and most of what I missed out on with descriptions of filling me in tonight of the stuff I didn't click with and the fact of my life at the time time was almost complete disaster and my relationship with my soul mate of 10 years I loved from the morning we met till even the moment she and her patients left in final vision ad to say goodbye for now..but I couldn't help while listening to this incredible send off like no other person ever about my innermost child feelings I admit I still was clinging to at my age of 59. While checking out much of the footage for the past 2days on the TH-cam community on Ronnie yours was the final one I put on last night while cleaning up my place with my cat. But I definitely want to thank you for taking the time to put this together with your personal words especially with what you spoke about commenting on everything from good to bad! God bless you for helping me to move on in a more positive future at the age of 59 sir.

Yes. Strange Highways. It is one of the most vitriolic, cynical metal albums ever....and I'm including black and death metal bands. There is something endearing about a happy singer going from 'dreams and rainbows' to pitch black pessimism.
And from Angry Machines, I used a line from "This is Your Life" as my high school yearbook quote.

Thanks for the excellent analysis. I have made this comment on other channels, but here goes- I was lucky enough to see Ronnie 3 times solo, and twice with Heaven and Hell. I saw him in Hamilton, ont, with Iron Maiden, late 90's. My buddy made his way to the stage, and handed Ronnie his hat. Ronnie put it on, and continued singing. So, that's the kind of guy he was.

DIO was highly interested in getting John Sykes aboard when he was putting the band together. However, Sykes was still playing with Thin Lizzy and working on the "Thunder and Lightning" record. I always felt if Randy Rhoads did not tragically die in the plane crash and he would have left Ozzy, Ronnie would have potentially connected with Randy to do a record in the 80's or 90's.

Love the Holy Diver dream story bro... really cool ... I saw Ronnie and Vinnie on Mob Rules Tour with Sabbath in 1982 at Greensboro Coliseum ... Ronnie was dressed in a mid evil type jester smock and curled toe boots .. Magic, just magic.. yes , Dio was the epitome of mid evil type metal...and as a drummer myself , I just idolized Vinnie's style and did my best to emulate it .. little sidenote , check out the drum roll on Last in Line were just as the phrase ,"your the throw before the toss " is uttered , the drum roll is spot on and you can just see a stone being thrown in your mind ... awesome.. also , not going to be dishonest, at the time Ronnie was starting to shine in metal with Mob Rules and the first Dio albums , the early 80's, acid was making a resurgence in the States and well , let's just say the whole Dio experience was like so "enlightening"... but regardless of mind altering , Dio altered your mind in itself... great review , and you really have the perfect descriptions of the Dio discography ... better than guys my age have attempted .. Godspeed

Just caught this great job, Dio is my favorite singer of all time and Vivian Campbell is my favorite guitarist doing everything but def Leppard they waste his talents. But I saw Dio over 15 times I saw his first 4 tours at the spectrum in Philly and countless other tours and with sabbath and heavan and hell at the end. Ive also met Ronnie a couple of times and he would always take the time to sign autographs and take pictures with his fans..all his concerts were amazing but my favorite was the last in line tour in Philly 1984 with vivian doing his solo on heavan and hell it was even better then the 86 special from the spectrum which I was at, craig Goldy could never replace viv. And I also thought Doug Aldrich was great check out his 2005 live video with dio doing gates of Babylon classic stuff thanks for this brings back alot of memories for me.

Makes me sad you didn’t like the hologram. I myself would be overjoyed if I could see it live, since I never had the chance to see Ronnie when he was still alive unfortunately. Something is better than nothing, I guess you’d like it more if they just had him on the mega screen or something like that.

I loved this video about Ronnie! I fell for Ronnie in 2019. So, being a new fan, I know so little about past Dio. I did hate the hologram thing. Figured it was just Dio's divorcee lying and trying to make a buck off him. She lied about being his widow, why not twice? I suspect she was the cause of all the fighting between Ronnie and the Sabs, Viv & everyone else. Dio even called her a staulker in an old vid. Ive grown to love Ronnie with all my heart and my own Hell is... I'll never get to see him play or meet him. I do believe he is in Heaven waiting for us, he was too good not to be there

Hellllllllll yeahhh dio my favorite band been a fan since 1984 met dio twice once in 2003 and 2004 he was the coolest guy. In my book dio never made a bad album but I feel angry machines was rather weak but it has some good songs but not his best. I'm glad you brought some love for strange highways and sacred heart love those albums very underrated along with his last album master of the moon people only seem to like the first 2 dio albums why I have no idea every dio is a diamond. Dude I thought I was the only one who thought in dreams was awesome no one really gives master of the moon any credit much less in dreams that's my favorite song from that album. Oh man dude thank you for saying what I've been saying since it came out that this is your life tribute album sucks especially halfords cover of man on the silver mountain sucked hard. Most of the bands on that album are nu metal and nu rock and I hate nu metal and music of today slipknot is not heavy metal or bands like them to me it's blender music. And your right about the hologram took the words right out if my mouth I'm so glad I got to see dio live when he was here and meet him 2 times. Dio band is my favorite and always will be and when I want to remember dio I have his music which I listen to on a daily basis along with all heavy metal priest and maiden and accept 24 hours a day. Dude I thought you would be like every dude your age today a wanna be metal head most people your age don't get it but you do I lived it as it happened and still going strong but your alright in my book great job on this dio retrospective great job man. One word to describe dio legend and as long as we listen to his music he will live forever. Cause legends never die we miss you so much Ronnie thank you for the music we rock. R I P Ronnie James Dio. Dio never sold out he stayed true to heavy metal his whole life. Just like me heavy metal til then end.

I'm 25 I wanted to see the hologram out of curiosity since I never saw him live but it was canceled because the theater they where booked to played couldn't accommodate the equipment and in hindsight I really didn't miss much.

No no no no, Magica in my opinion is the most unique album Ronnie ever composed, I implore you to give it another chance, Pay attention to the lyrics and to the music, I feel like it’s literally telling you a story, Craig Goldy might have sound like Ritchie Blackmore but I can assure you that other guitar gods do a lot worse of a job emulating their guitar heroes, the solo in Fever Dreams is one of the greatest metal solos of ALL TIME, As Long As It’s Not About Love it’s probably the most original, heartwarming and unique songs Craig and Ronnie ever composed, it’s one of their greatest with a friggin masterful guitar work, that song, yes, that song brings me to tears almost every time I listen to it, I just wish more people would appreciate the ingenious work of vocals, keyboards and guitar work this album has to offer.
I would take the Craig Goldy albums over Tracy G and Rowan Robertson any day. Kill me.
    Have a good day sir.
    Loved your video.

I saw Dio once in 09 with Heaven and hell at Knebworth in England . Couldn’t wait to see them at their own show rather than a festival set , sadly that didn’t happen . That set was perfect though to the point it was like they’d booked the most evil weather they could to come in just as their intro tape started !

I'm going to confess something. Craig Goldy Dio is my favorite Dio. Dream Evil, Magica, Master of the Moon are my 3 favorite Dio. I love all Dio, but after the Goldy stuff, I love Lock Up The Wolves and Killing The Dragon. I love then Holy Diver and Last In Line. Then I must say Heaven and Hell is my all time favorite Dio/Black Sabbath album. Then Mob Rules, then The Band Heaven and Hell, then Strange Highways and Angry Machines, then Dehumanizer, and lastly, Rainbow and Elf and anything else.

King of Rock n' Roll is actually about Ozzy Osbourne, Dio said this in one of his album liner notes. A clue is the lyric ''bad boy, always on the cover''.

Anyone else notice the parallels between DIO's first two solo albums and Ozzy's first two solo albums? Both are brilliant, bulletproof, arguably the 2nd of both could be claimed to be slightly better, both were supposed to be "Bands", but it doesn't matter. DIARY OF A MADMAN and LAST IN LINE to me are bedrock, the foundation of taste metal. I know Ozzy wins on the mainstream recognition aspect, But DIO and ultimately Vivian Campbell's guitar work give it a damn good run. Viv is not held in the same esteem as Rhoads, and maybe that's how it should be, but he is amazing on that 6 string. Always heard SACRED HEART was weak from keyboards and in fighting, but I played it last week and Viv's guitar work, or should I say particularly the solo's, are some of the best he ever did.
Distinct in its phrasing and delivery.
Oh yeah, and I love LOCK UP THE WOLVES. Rowan deserves love and respect.

And Simon Wright is a good drummer, people knock him because he had an awful drum sound in AC/DC but in Dio he sounded just like Vinny really.
