Wheels that can Drive Sideways | LEGO Technic Mecanum Car

Hi everyone,
here's a fun proof-of-concept car that uses mecanum wheels to drive in all possible directions.

Extra info for all the description readers out there:
You can also connect all the wheels to one motor each so that the car can rotate. Also, you can alternate the wheel directions then in an "axis", so that the car is more stable.

A way to allow it to rotate with only 2 motors would be insane

2D motion has 3 degrees of freedom: x, y, and rotation, so you need 3 motors to do all at the same time. But maybe you could use some kind of 2-output mechanism (th-cam.com/video/jm7O3nFp5Oo/w-d-xo.html ) to do that

@@in1 Thanks for the answer! Somehow this reminds me of Screw Tanks. They can strafe, rotate (slowly) and go forward. I've always wanted to know if it would be possible to make screwtanks out of omniwheels.

@@in1 simplest way would look like a 3 wheel odo setup in reverse
two omni's in a line, one paralel to them

uhhh if strictly mecanum is wanted, maybe just a third motor that flips a gearbox that makes one side actually reverse

Ce principe est génial, je cherchais récemment comment avoir un système compact me permettant de déplacé mon véhicule dans trop rencontré de difficulté sur les sols meubles (type sable etc) et je pense que ton système est parfaitement efficace.

Yeah, that might work, however I'm not sure whether the tiny wheels will have enough grip in the sand for it to move efficiently

If all the wheels could turn independently, yes. That would even be possible with just 3 motors+wheels
