    Life changing tip: we all have those clothes that aren’t necessarily dirty, but aren’t really clean either (as some refer to it: “clirty” clothes). What I’ve done is taken a systematic approach to all those clothes and designated an area to storing those clothes in a tidy properly folded manor and every time I get dressed in the morning, I look in my clirty pile first and see what kinds of pieces I can pull from that first. If there’s not enough for a full outfit that I didn’t wear the day before, I will then pull the missing piece of said clothing from my fresh clothes. That way I’m only using what I need and not ending up with massive loads of laundry all the time. It’s also really helped me pick out decent outfits since the clirties usually provide a nice foundation to build from.

      I've always procrastinated washing my clothes until they seem truly dirty and have always felt bad saying that as if I'm gross, but I'm glad to know that it's actually a good thing

      I do something similar! I have a 6 hook on the back on my bedroom door and my "clirty" clothes go there. I was always too lazy to fold them again! Great new word!

    actually i noticed that when you use a sponge or something like that in the shower (i use a mesh sponge i was gifted) you need less product. It all bubbles up (idk if it's the correct word). I wash my entire body with same amount of soap i would use to wash only my torso if i weren't using a sponge.
    PS, obviously it depends on the material, a sponge would bubble up more than a piece of cloth

    Stainless steel pots are way better then the non stick, the chemicals that are potentially used on non stick keep me from purchasing. A lot of people make it sounds so complicated and it just kind of discourages me from even wanting to try it, but I've changed so much around my house (switching deodorant, using soap nuts, making my own cleaners, microfiber ball, reusable straws, storage bags, etc. Just little things here and there) since finding your channel and I love all of them. Especially the toilet bombs and soap nuts, like how have I never known about these before? 😂 Totally unrelated side note, but I just noticed we have the same dishwasher lol.

    Luffas are actually gourds you can grow and are sustainable so if you do want sponges or anything use a luffa over a plastic sponge.
    They can be eaten when young as well but you just let them dry on the vine then crack and peel off the outer shell and the seeds fall out and voila free sponge made by nature in your own yard!

    Could you discuss how you are sustainable when it comes to medications (even OTC stuff like ibuprofen)? I always feel so wasteful with the packaging that comes with medications.

    • @JosiahMcCarthy
      @JosiahMcCarthy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think the best advice is to recognize that unhealthy habits and not taking care of yourself will often come back to bite you in a very resource-intensive way. Doctor visits, surgeries, hospital stays, even just care you give yourself at home after you've gotten sick, these all demand resources that could have been spared in cases of preventable illnesses you theoretically kept yourself healthy from. So whatever position of health you're in, try to keep yourself as healthy as possible, even if that takes some resources. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. One example: toothpaste. If you can't find sustainably packaged toothpaste, and you perhaps can't stand diy stuff, it's by far more important to do whatever will help you brush consistently and well. If zero waste habits get in the way of keeping your teeth clean, then the extra measures at the dentist to fix cavities etc. will immediately require way more plastic than you saved in that time.
      So, all that said, medications are a great example of necessary exceptions to zero waste habits. Medications could certainly have more sustainable packaging, but it's really not worth sacrificing your personal health in any way in order to save a few pieces of plastic each month, whether preventative or curative health. Remember that personal zero waste habits are actually very very small in terms of controlling the waste in the world. Save waste where you can, don't feel guilty for keeping yourself healthy.

      Hi Ana! We’re lucky that we have free curbside composting with the city so we don’t curate our own compost but I do have a video with tips for people living in apartments who want to compost! We used to do them when we lived in an apartment.

      She's got a DIY/day in the life video about installing the rain barrel, I think. Basically it takes some of the water runoff from the roof/your gutters when it rains and just stores it till you need it.

    Do you know what I really want to know? How do you zero-waste your cat? As a double cat mom, I often struggle with this, because toilets and cat-food packaging are always made from tons of plastic. I switched the litter to wooden pellets I can get for almost nothing from a nearby horse ranch but since one of my boys is allergic and has to eat mono protein food it's very hard to go zero-waste with them when they can't go outside. Would love a video on that topic!

    Do you know if there are any eco-friendly nail polishes that are actually opaque?
    Also, my menstrual cups use a special soap that comes in a plastic tube. Are there any plastic-free soaps that are good for saalt cups?

    Hi! Would it be possible / interesting for you to make a video on sustainability trends and preoccupations that were big in the past, but which have faded away more recently? I was just thinking about the big push for banning aerosol cans 20ish years ago. Did they change them and now they're not as bad? Did we figure out that they weren't as damageable as we thought at first? As far as I can tell they're still widely used, but no one talks about them anymore. Anyway, maybe there are other eco-trends like these that might be interesting to dive into. Just a suggestion :-)

      Jambon mostly, the chlorofluorocarbons used to propel the product (that’s what caused the damage to the ozone) has been replaced by a safer substance or they have a different delivery form altogether. And it worked! There is still a major ozone hole over the South Pole-ish ( or thought to be caused by chlorofluorocarbons), but another one actually closed. That happens a lot. For instance, endangered animal laws do save the species and no one loses their job. We should celebrate these things more. Thanks for asking about it.

    Can you compost the stuff from your vacuum?

    • @annabays8833
      @annabays8833 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It probably depends on what you’re vacuuming and how certain you are that it’s all compostable materials. Pet hair is compostable, as well as just general dust dirt or sand that you pick up. As long as you aren’t vacuuming stuff that isn’t compostable I bet you could!

    Hi Shelbi, I was just watching a video from a youtuber called Erica Lucas. She is on a minimalist journey and she's starting to go low waste. A lot of people were recommending that she checks out your channel. I thought it would be so cool if you could collab - maybe you could help her make low waste changes? Kind of like you did with your sister, but remotely... Just an idea. Love from the UK!
