When you peel a label of there is always glue left on the container... I found out that by putting hot water into wathever you want the label off of and smearing oliveoil on the glue resedue, and letting it sit, you can scrape if of. Depending on the glue it make take 2 times to get completely of!
When I try to open the file it says “the owner may have deleted it” and I can’t access recipes.

Not to mention it helps with recourses. I use to only watch her and then she mentioned others and I was like there’s other sustainable/ eco friendly youtubers?! It’s great. I also recently started to budget more restricted specifically groceries because I need to buy a house on one the other youtubers gave so many great tips!

I used to work at a bagel bakery and I made the everything bagel seasoning. It is 2 parts dried minced onion, 2parts dried minced garlic, 2 parts sesame seed, 2 parts poppy seed, and 1 part kosher salt. If you use more salt in this ratio your other toppings will not stick as well. :)

I’m not a minimalist and I’m actually way more wasteful than I want to me. I keep watching Shelbi to just try to find little ways I can try to reduce my waste. It’s so hard but I’m trying.

Wishing you the best of luck. Life is so much better with my reusable pads (have tried a few cups, but they don't really work for me personally). I wish that when I was younger someone would have shown me that they were an option. Not just from an eco perspective but in terms of comfort and the chemicals in disposables adding to my already bad cramps. The more young people who are shown that there are good alternatives the better.

Hi, I sew for a charity called Days for Girls which makes and distributes menstruation kits. The initial aim was to keep girls attending school because in many places in the world they miss 5 days a month because they have no access to what they need. They then fall behind resulting in them dropping out of school. Apart from supplying kits they are very involved with education and helping women in poor countries set up small businesses making the kits. There are chapters of DfG in many countries.

DIY nut milk secret: use your favorite tea instead of some of the water to infuse flavor. I like either earl gray or a spring flower tea (lavender rose and jasmine for example). If you're one of those hippies with a big tea drawer like I am it's super easy and It. is. the. best! I'll never buy nut milk again because even if it's cost equivalent mine is SO much better. Fancy for cheap :)

You can upcycle an old tee shirt to make a reusable bag. I like to use lemon essential oil for sticky tag residue.

My family likes to get together every year and can/freeze a bunch of different foods- applesauce, green beans, corn, peaches, pears, pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, salsa, you name it! The great thing is we do it when the stuff is in season and buy it locally then we have enough of that item to last us a year! Sustainable, cheaper in the long run, and delicious!
So you buy something seasonal... and then freeze it for later on the year? Asking because I started a new budget that’s more restrictive on groceries. Could use the help just a little confused
Yes, I think she does like that. Usually vegetables or fruit are cheaper if they are in season or even regional because they didn't have to be shipped all over the world and there is more available in season which reduces the price. e.g. strawberries are only in season for about two months here in Germany, so we are buying 9 to 12 kg strawberries and cook jam which lasts us a whole year. If the strawberries are importet, they are about 9 to 12 €/kg in season it's 4€/kg. If you have a farmers market nearby you could go there Close to the time they Close and see if they are willing to sell the really ripe or not so beautiful tomatoes that are left from market day etc. a little cheaper to you 😉
Yep when something is in season we’ll buy a lot of it from a local farmers market(the ones we go to have an option where you can pre order large quantities so that’s what we do) and then we’ll freeze some things like corn and applesauce but we can others like green beans and peaches.

My two cents on removing labels: find the matching solvent for the glue. Some are water-soluble, some are fat/oil-soluble and for some, you will need a solvent like cleaning gasoline, nail polish remover, acetone. Sometimes heat (from your hairdryer) to melt the adhesive will also do the trick nicely. These solvents will do for most adhesives.

Make your own salad dressings too! It’s the best way to use up sauces and ingredients that are lurking in the fridge! Store bought has so much sodium and fat.
Salad dressing consists of acid, oil, sweetener and any spices you like!

Elena yes it’s normal in America. We use dressings as dip too like ranch and blue cheese for chicken wings. It’s super easy to make at home and you already have the ingredients for all dressings.

If you use fishtank water when you regrow veggies, it will have the right nutrients to feed your plants to make them strong. The reason your table top veggies fail after a certain amount of time is because plain water doesn't feed them at all. (you can harvest a cup of water from your tank and replace the water you took. Then do that every few days to keep it fresh for growing 😁 fish poop = free plant food. Gold fish only cost like 10 cents and their food is about a $1 or so. Cheap option and fun to know your pet is helping you out
AAAAH IM SO EARLY! Got my own herb plants today so I don’t have to buy them in plastic anymore! Super excited to live less wastefully when i move out in a month! No bulk stores nearby but a farmers market which is great :)

the “café drinks” is literally the best way to save money. i’ve been making my matcha almond milk frappuccino starbucks order and HOLY SHIT YALL. starbucks is actually nasty in comparison to what you can make at home. also you can add protein the frappes and ice lattes to make them “meal replacements” or just a more satisfying snack!! big brain energy over here. save money, the planet, and a damn sea turtle!

I bought a bread machine at a thrift store for $9. I see them at thrift stores all the time. It's the easiest way to make homemade bread. Dump all tbe ingredients in. Press start.
They are kind of big so you need a bit of space to store it, but if you have the room, completely worth it.

I made my own hydroponic garden for my city apartment during quarentine!! Another sort of DIY is that if you’re composting (i’m using Bokashi in my apartment since we dont have any kind of composting programs in DE) you can use the compost tea as a drain cleaner! Also when diluted with water its a great plant food too. My lasy DIY is to make a sugar wax which doesnt require any strips of cloth and can be stored in any container you habe lying around and is reusable. When its used up it can be melted down with water and go down the sink safely. No need to buy razors or creams.

To remove labels, you can boil water and put inside the glass bottle. Then to remove the glue residues, use oil and baking soda and scratch a little bit to remove them ! It's super satisfying

My aunt used to melt crayons to make tie dye crayons in fun shapes using cookie cutters and we always wanted to color with those instead of the regular crayons!

It takes 2 years generally to grow a pineapple, but it takes my Mom nearly 3 to be able to harvest one that she plants using the crowns in a pot. Need A LOT of patience (especially since hers get eaten by civets often 😂) but the sweetness is waayy better than storebought ones.

Great tipp for cleaning house plants: using a banana peel! I´ve tried it for a few months now and they are shiny, healthy and don´t gather as much dust (mostly good for big leafed plants)
when I was younger I had a crayola crayon maker that you put the chunks of crayon in the tray, it uses a light bulb to melt them, and then you pour the tray into a mold. me and my mom had so much fun with that

I enjoy these videos; one of my favorite low waste tips from this series was getting a reusable mister for my olive oil. Saves a lot of money and waste and I invest it in local artisanal oils.
I've been making veggie/bone broth for a while now! I do a lot of these that I didn't realize were "zero waste" just lazy hacks lol. also, if you can make donuts you can make bagels! they are so easy.

Pineapples take about 2 years to bear fruit, but I've harvested many in the past, and have one ready to eat in a couple weeks.

I make my own pizza dough and pie dough. I tried to make tortillas once after you talked about it, but failed pretty bad haha. Guess I should give it another try using your recipe!
Also, for cleaning armpit/deodorant stains on shirts, a paste of sodium bicarbonate+salt+water (+vinegar if the stain is a bit tough) works great. I had a lot of shirts with stains from when I still used deodorants with aluminum, it worked better than expected!

Peanut butter is a great way to remove labels! I just put it on there and let the oils sit there and it works so well. Also, my friend makes bagels and it is definitely doable! You just prep them in the evening and bake in the morning
My favorite way to remove labels from glass jars/ bottles is with a bin of almost boiling water and castile soap. I place my jars in the hot water with the castile soap (maybe 1 tablespoon? I always eyeball it) and lightly rub over the labels to make sure they get saturated. I usually let them soak in that solution for a few hours (overnight if I forget) and they will come off super easily with a rag and a little more hot water. I have used baking soda in place of the soap and it has worked just as well!
I used a rest of wool (that I bought originally for I DIY I never did) to kit a bag for my vegetables! Also I made my own cottons pads after seeing your video a few months ago, and I'm so happy about the waste of cotton that I am reducing :)

I love melting down the bits of candles and creating a massive big candle! I always feel so thrifty.
Another thing I do is buy the loose candles at goodwill and reuse the jars from previous candles! So much cheaper. 👌
You can make your own laundry bags (or produce bags) from old pillow cases if you just add a zipper or buttons to the opening!
Also, filling a sock with wood pellets (the cat litter kind is non-toxic) makes a really good dehumidifier for your car, garage or any small spaces 😊
Thank you so much for mentioning the cautions with diy skincare. It’s not mentioned enough and like actually hazardous or more commonly unsanitary and unstable in many scenarios.

One DIY I'd love you to consider tackling is sunscreen. I've done some of the preliminary research and although it's pretty controversial, I think it your perspective could help the conversation. I'm going to start making my own this summer after understanding the dynamics between zinc vs PFA effectiveness/toxicity and the simplest ingredients to get a consistency I actually want to use.

With kids (I’m a nanny) I make their play dough, finger paint, watercolor paint, regular paint, and other sensory things similar to kenetic sand and cloud dough.

along with food and drinks, i would recommend trying fermentation projects! you can save waste by preserving excess produce, you can reuse glass containers you have lying around, and you can save money by making something instead of buying all at the same time. i just started brewing kombucha and ginger beer and it's been an easy, fun, and super rewarding process for me. there are tons of instructional videos on youtube (and probably skillshare, too!), and lots of information online because it's a practice that goes back thousands of years.

Tofu is easy to do but takes practice :)! And i calculated the cost for fresh beans in bulk and you need only water and gympsum OR lemon juice ! Takes 8h to the beans to soak and after its 40 min to do a brick of tofu about 500g for 0,75 cents 💕
To remove labels on glass jars/bottles you can just put them in boiling water for some minutes and the label comes off without the use of any chemicals. To remove any residue just use dishwashing soap.
You can make a heat pack by using a sock (preferably a long sock and not a fuzzy one) and fill it up 3/4 full with rice and then tying a knot at the top of the sock. Just throw it in the microwaves for about 1.5 - 2 minutes and ta da! just keep an eye on it while it's in the microwave the first few times around to make sure you're not leaving it too long causing it to explode. I love using it around my neck and shoulders i find it's the perfect shape for it
I always use the candle scraps for my wax warmer . I think I want to make my wax wraps and I need to inverse in stasher bags lol I need a bunch of them though
I make my own ginger ale soda as well as strawberry and blackberry soda.
Sometimes the pinepple in the supermarket is selled with the central leaves removed so you can't regrow it at home and have to buy it every time
Hey Shelbi, thanks for the great video! Hope you and Madison are well and safe. I loved the great tips in this video. So I know you love your soda stream so here’s one for that. Take plain water,add fresh mint and some mint infused maple syrup. I get mine from @ Baird Farm in Vermont. Talk about yummy!😍 Great for those hot Texas days and so refreshing.....however, when you’ve had enough and want a little something more powerful...just add a shot of gin/ vodka. We call it a Saplet. A sprig of fresh mint or some fresh fruit and you’re good to go. Enjoy.

I’ve made the wax wraps before it was EASY but also MESSY. I’d recommend doing what I did: make a bunch at once (I had several wedding showers one summer and I have everyone some homemade wax wraps) You could also give them out as Christmas presents...anything where you can justify doing it in bulk.
For those who want to make tofu from scratch, there is an episode of River Cottage Australia where a farmer uses egg shells and vinegar with homemade soy milk (soaked soy beans and water blended together) to curdle it and then create tofu. If you can master that it would be as zero waste as you can get.

This isn’t a DIY, but my family doesn’t have a soda stream, and we still get out soda without waste. A local restaurant brews their own root beer, and they allow you to buy a growler of it in a glass jug. Then, when it’s empty, you just go get it refilled!
I made my own face mask (and one for my boyfriend as well) from one of my mum's old tshirts. I also enjoy making my own frankenmakeup (inspired by Safiya Nygaard). Just recently I created two perfect frankenblushes: I scraped a bit of product of multiple eyeshadows into a 36mm pans of makeup products I've previously used up, all you need to do is add isopropyl alcohol and then press down with toilet paper to soak up some of the moisture, there are probably tutorials on this on youtube, the only thing to keep in mind is that matte shades can sometimes be ruined with this method, but in that case dry-pressing could be a good option, I think facesbygina has an IGTV tutorial on this. I've also create a cream blush by mixing multiple lipstick shades with some cocoa butter before. Especially if you have some makeup products in your collection that don't suit you, this might be a fun way to get some more use out of them.
