If you have to miss Muir Pass and the Evolution Basin, the canyon north of Bishop Pass is actually more beautiful in its own way. On my third trip on the JMT, we were going N to S. When we got to the Bishop Pass junction, there was a ranger telling people to exit over Bishop because a major storm was coming in the next day for a week or more. We slept on Bishop Pass. Around midnight, an asteroid came shooting across the sky, hit a granite wall, and exploded. It was so cool. Then I remembered the hike out my whole life. So beautiful. I've always wanted to go back but never did. Maybe I'll get there one day. I want my wife to see it. Too bad all of the lakes were frozen for you. But I'm sure it was still amazing. Happy trails.
I really enjoy how y'all have a "finish each other's sandwiches" quality to your recaps. Congrats on all you've accomplished thus far, and doing it with such contagious joy and wonder. As others will note, it's definitely wroth returning to see the rest of LeConte Canyon, Muir Pass, Evolution Basin, and McClure Meadow! Shine on.

...and it was answered before, but to confirm, that weird alien-looking thing was a RAWS site, aka a Remote Automatic Weather Station. This one might belong to the state of California, but Federal agencies like the National Interagency Fire Center and the National Weather Service have thousands of them stashed out in the woods all over the country...

Bishop Pass is incredible!!! So beautiful at the top. We cowboy camped on a big rock slab that butted against the lake on top. Stayed in bishop waiting for a friend to join us on trail and hiked backed over bishop pass to the PCT . Epic Pass
Such a bummer to miss Muir Pass and Evolution Basin and Valley! Was one of the lucky ones to go over the bridge last year before they dismantled it. Muir Pass was 4 miles of snow on both sides even then in August!
One of the 3 classic Sierra loop hikes is the N Lake to Sabrina route that goes over Muir. (The other 2 being Whitney & Rae lakes.)
Maybe go back when the bridge is fixed, or perhaps low water in Oct this year. You'll still want to do Whitney and of course do some fishing.
I'd skip any of the drive-in lakes. As I mentioned before, there are hundreds of off trail high alpine lakes holding Golden Trout. You've got to be in good shape to reach them, which in your case would be like a casual stroll.
In fact, you've hiked by many prime zones. Do some sleuthing/research to see if you can locate these places.

Wooo hoo. South Lake looked Spectacular! Love that place in fall. A few years back that lake was almost dry-so sad. Glad the Sierra has refilled it!
0:51 slippage looked intense, not gonna lie I kinda jumped.
That scene with the moon right above the mountains was amazing. And the river crossings just scared me. Frightening AF.
While I'm disappointed many of the through hikers are missing Muir Pass, Evolution Basin and Valley because of the missing bridge, it always makes me happy to see people enjoying my favorite view in the Sierra Nevada (looking down into LeConte Canyon from the lip of Dusy Basin.
If you haven't been through there already, I'm predicting Bear Creek north of Selden Pass is really going to be a bear... pun intended 😀

I love your videos, but, really, what I love the best is you two guys attitude. In the late 60's, my brothers and I did a lot of backpacking on these trails and a big thing I remember is the endless bickering we did. But we had fun.

That was absolutely a weather station. California keeps close measurement of snow and rain in the Sierras since it provide a ton of water for our summers.
A friend and I last August backpacked from the Taboose Creek TH near Independence and exited at Bishop Pass. We had it much easier than your group, but we still had lots of blow downs, snow and rock scrambling on the north side of Mather Pass, and lots of trails that were creeks. Congrats on a job well done. I am enjoying your videos. Hike on!
The good news about the detour is that you got to see Dusi Basin, and then Humphries Basin and Piute Canyon are incredible. The weather station is a remote snow/rain/temperature sensor used by the state water department. So much of California's water comes from Sierra snowpack, they account for pretty much every drop of rain and flake of snow.
It's a weather station. I saw one guy do a solo crossing on that river a few days before you. Guess he found a good spot, or just got lucky.

Bishop pass is remarkably beautiful when it isn’t completely covered in snow. Still beautiful with snow though
Having done the JMT in 2018 I can say the Muir Pass is amazing and you should come back and do it if you get the chance.
Am enjoying your videos. You guys are brave. I could not handle those crossings at night. Am set to start the John Muir this summer. I’m sixty, so need snow to melt and water to calm down. 😅
safe trekking - probably the right decision on SJR bypass many more beautiful miles/passes ahead. enjoy the 395 corridor and look forward to future videos.

I've been following your excellent adventure all the way. Of course, safety comes first, but that stretch up LeConte Canyon to Muir Pass, Evolution Basin, and Evolution Valley is incredible! I hope you can find a way to do it. You are on the east side of the San Joaquin River. You wouldn't need to cross the river again until way up Le Conte Canyon. There should be a way. Ahh, never mind, I see you are already at North Lake.
It's the Middle Fork Kings River in LeConte Canyon ;-)
The San Joaquin is below Evolution Valley 🙂
@@grega8586 Ah, you are correct! So, possibly the crossing they were concerned about is at the lower end of Evolution Valley.
@@philmartz That crossing of Evolution Creek is usually one of the "highlights" of most PCT vlogs ;-).
I did it in June of 2004, but thankfully it was just barely above my knees. It gives you second thoughts, tho, when your trekking poles begin to vibrate from the flow of the water 😀
hi at what altitude does the elevation take affect on you. is there more snow this year compared to other years. love your videos in the sierrras. we do not have mountains like that here in australia.
Love your videos! I’m starting a 900 miles stretch of the PCT IN 2 1/2 weeks beginning at Paiute Pass and was wondering what GPS app or device you use? I’m a little concerned about identifying which passes to hike in case there’s no visible boot path. Any insight would be so appreciated! Happy travels!

Go with bigger battery pack so you have more options and don't have worry about charging and skip some exits resupply points.
