    You can re - jet & recondition / optimise carburettors but cannot tune these bikes when stock in the true sense of the word . The ignitor is ROM , not programnable to keep manufacturing costs down when they were in production . The converted to EFI motorcycles CAN be tuned , spark timing advance etc . I have a converted to EFI Tyga project motorcycle of the MC22 series at my friend's place that is track - only that is programnable with a PC . The dyno results are far smoother compared to stock configuration . The speedometer is in need of attention or replacement .There is lag - error . My Tyga does 4.5 seconds with me on board at 70kg bodyweight . It is set for 98 octane with major engine modifications & refurbishment . I need to a quarter - mile - see what result I get . I have access to a Yamaha FZR 250 that is restored & pulls smooth & strong - anticipated a raw engine sound with demon exhaust considered but was not suitable . The FZR 250 Yamaha ended up with Yoshimura as demon oval exhausts are designed for mid to large Suzuki GSX - R models . They are not suitable for any Honda models either according to the exhaust manufacturers technical papers .The FZR 250 ended up sounding nice anyway .

      100%, Ive considered making my own ignitor but don't know if it would be beneficial (or noticable ) to have a smoother/slightly more advanced ignition curve to run 98.. for your EFI, what did you use as crank position sensor? The stock sensor?

      @@davidsfix We removed the 9 point , three point gap pulse wheel & made a 10 point decimal one on CNC that is similar to the one on the Yamaha FZR 250 . It was the only way that we could enable microsquirt equipment to interpret the signals . The cylinder head had to be replaced with an unmachined one which had to have it's cylinder head machined shallower to achieve a higher compression ratio from original to 13.5 to 1 to support the 98 octane fuel . New cams were machined up with extra lift to support this arrangement . This is the reverse of what Honda did on the post - June 1994 restricted model .

    Fit a fuel injection kit as my mechanic friend did just before COVID 19 hit Australia . This cuts down maintenance . Two MC22'S have been treated this way with success . Microsquirt platform . They also now have TYGA fairing kits fitted .

    I miss my mc22 !! Stolen from me . Just bought a 2001 R6 ... but id have a cbr250rr mc22 anyday again ... but not ever the new cbr250 , looks and sound awful !!

      Sucks it was stolen man! Yeah the new 250 'rr' is pretty disappointing.. they need to bring back the inline 4 250s!

      @@davidsfix I now have a second Yamaha FZR 250 3LN1 which is white and light blue . With some friends we gave her a top overhaul over a weekend with plenty of parts on hand . She is smooth & fairly quiet with her engine sound . I rode her at Eastern Creek on the 11th April after refurbishment . I was very happy with the results .

    Unless you convert to 813 or Microsquirt programmable ECU , with a fuel injection conversion , you cannot actually "TUNE" these motorcycles due to their outdated ROM ignitor . You can service the carburettors but this is simply maintenance , not actual "TUNING" The clutch plates seem worn as well . The wind appears to be assisting your time 0-100 attempt. My friend had me replace his clutch on Friday . A good time for you should be 5.25 seconds .You didn't mention the gradient .

      Almost dead flat road, barely a calm breeze that day, probably not the clutch and just me being a noob at launching haha.

      @@davidsfix Adjust your clutch modulation . If the clutch is still not right , replace the plates . My mechanic friend looked at your video an hour ago closely & said that the plates are worn . I have also seen this first hand . Bad clutch technique can damage the plates prematurely as well. Leaving it can eventually cause problems for the camshafts .

    • @davidsfix
      @davidsfix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clutch has maybe less than 1500kms on it when filmed, it's a kevlar set with new springs and some other new bits. I think I was still getting used to launching with with the new clutch and probably dragged too long.

      @davidsfix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get how it can cause damage to the plates, but not sure how it could affect the camshafts?

    Honda MC22 with it's gear driven cams has more mechanical losses than the chain driven cams on the other three competitors ( FZR 250 Yamaha / GSXR 250 Suzuki / ZX2-R Kawasaki .) The Honda is slightly less fuel efficient than the others mentioned . Honda has abandoned the arrangement in later models because of this disadvantage .

    • @davidsfix
      @davidsfix  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Gear driven cams have their disadvantages, costs of production/engineering is definitely higher than chain systems, probably the main reason they abandoned gear driven cams. Costs. Gears also allow reliable high RPM, generally meaning more power. Power loss is really negligible. No stretching chains and worn tensioners is a bonus for sure! I get about 20km/l on my old MC22 with mixed city riding, not too bad for a bike it's age and millage

      @@davidsfix The gear driven cam system is very costly to repair if there is a problem & is harder to lubricate properly .. It doesn' t dissipate heat very well . It also leads to a noisier engine with extra harmonics . I have noticed that the MC 22 runs hotter than it's rivals. Particularly where I live in the summer months . My mechanic friend often has to troubleshoot overheating
      Honda MC series engines .The rivals engines used various methods to ensure their performance was on par with Honda .

      Wow, what county is that? Because here in NZ where I live summer gets up to ~30c at worst and I still find it running cool, even in stop go traffic, when the fan kicks in temp drops reasonably fast. Haven't had temp go above half way in over my 20k kms I've ridden on it. From what I've seen the common failure points in the cooling system is the fan switch and the odd coolant leak. Pretty easy stuff :p compared to cars anyways lol the gear whine is part of the charm in this bike, I love it!

      @@davidsfix 45 degrees celsius in summer in western Sydney . The power output is 20% less in these conditions than when the ambient temperature is 20 degrees celsius . The cam gears get very stiff & noisy leading to a loss of power . The cooling system is not designed for our climate . My FZR 250 doesn't have this problem .

       @Robert McFadyen I dont think anyone would care about the extra fuel usage on this bike. The interesting fact is I never heard of gear cam given up on the MC22 but most of the MC22 rival is gone . All I see on the road are MC22, I rarely see any FZR250 and ZXR250 on NZ road. This is just to prove MC22 is way more reliable as a high rev engine compare to all its rival. I have seen multiple MC22 with their odometer going past 100ks and back to zero with the original engine. Also, who doesn't love the extra noise, the cam gear sounds way better than the cam chain bike. Regarding the cooling part, it's an old bike and the cooling system will need extra care. This applies to all old bikes. My mc22 has a heating issue sitting in the traffic, but all it needs was a flush with a new coolant.
