    The bottom of the skytrak needs to be flush with the hitting surface for the most accurate readings. You have it set up too high

    • @luke_hankins
      @luke_hankins 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      This. If the ST is not flush with the hitting surface, the ball starts moving outside of the camera window. So the speed and spin numbers are less accurate, especially at faster speeds.

      Also needs to have logo or mark pointing at the skytrak. I found it to be very accurate for me. My 7 irons definitely weren’t going 30 yards further than expected like in this video.

    The skytrak will not read properly with it that high off of the ground.
    I thread the feet of the case in from the top to level it when I'm on a level surface.
    It makes a huge difference to have the skytrak setup correctly.

      Unfortuntely the Mevo+ runs into the same issue with trackman indoors. You need 12-15 feet minimum of ball flight to get accurate data, you also need to use the metallic stickers on the ball, you also need 7-10 feet behind the ball for the unit. Most people don't have a space with 25 feet, where a camera based system like skytrack only needs room for you to swing.

    Chaps, being a Skytrak user for some time now, could you possibly do this test again but ensure the unit is at the exact level the ball is being hit from. I see you have the case and screws in but the unit should be 100% level with the hitting surface as this causes inconsistent reads with spin. Ideally take it out the case as this is where you get the best numbers and ensure the ball logo faces the unit too as this is how it measures spin better.
    Also with driver, leave the skytrak flat on the floor and just tee the ball about 1.5 inches behind the red dot.
    This is from a lot of research from users to get their comparison numbers much better.
    Love the video though and for a $2k unit, its a lot of fun!

  • @markevans6573
    @markevans6573 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You have SkyTrak raised off the ground about 2 inches due to the metal case not being set correctly. This will completely change the spin data, this is a flawed test like the test you did on planemate with it not setup correctly. It's very misleading to setup the £15k unit correctly and not to read up on correct setup for the £2k unit

  • @ZIXSIX2007
    @ZIXSIX2007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Just curious, Skytrak released an updated version of its software to correct high-ball speed issues. can you confirm which version of the software you are using? 3.4.1 or greater includes this fix for ball speeds in excess of 150mph. Good comparison though. Another area that was not 100% able to be seen, its advised that you point the logo of the ball towards the unit for best possible accuracy for spin rates... This is likely why for wedges, you didnt have an issue, but the ST struggled at higher ball speeds. Happy to advise further. Love the content!

      @misteragony 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a skytrak, all software on the latest version. Tried the logo thing (bridgestone balls with the big "B" pointed towards the unit). I also have a high swing speed and the numbers are really all over the place. Nothing makes sense. It's pretty useless for me since you can't trust the numbers. Perhaps for people with low swing speeds it's a good unit, but for me definetely not.

    • @TooEasyGaming
      @TooEasyGaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@misteragony I have an issue reading Bridgestone B too. Srixon balls have more ink on them, and are very consistent in my use. Just back the screw legs out and set them aside

      I've had a Sky Trak for 5 years. The trick with the driver is to tee it up two inches behind the dot. So it has an extra two inches to read everything. I've had over 160 mph ball speed reads, without any trouble.

    I had the exact same issues when I first got my skytrak back in april. I got on the forums and was told to ditch the protective case as it is difficult to get the unit level with the hitting surface. Other things that helped for faster ball speeds is to play the ball an inch behind the red dot with the driver, and fairway woods. It's still not perfect, but much better.

    If you have the GC Quad setup for Matt there's a setup that works to track the same ball with both units. Put the skytrak in Right hand mode and exactly opposite (across from) the GC Quad. (the unit will sit between Matt's feet when hitting which may seem unusual at first but will allow a one to one comparison).

  • @erikjoven2388
    @erikjoven2388 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I notice that the more shaped shots on Skytrak read longer than on GC Quad - it almost seems like GC quad measures how far the ball landed in a straight line to the landing point - while SkyTrak is measuring total distance traveled along the curved line. Think of a very long acute right triangle - the hypotenuse is a bit longer than the longer of the 2 other sides - or think of drawing a curved line between yourself and the landing point versus a straight line to the landing point - i wonder if distance traveled versus distance from strike point in a straight line comes into this at all? Could be just my tinfoil hat thinking here. It's more likely that SkyTrak just has a harder time as swing speeds go up due to not having as much data at its disposal so its algorithm is guessing more than GC Quad's has to.
    Either way - the camera tech and image analysis in GCQuad is just so much more advanced and it just gathers so much more data - and more data = better projections.
    Super interesting video guys!

      I got myself an Optishot 2 which is VERY budget friendly at about £350. Its pretty good at tracking club path and face angle, at least gives a good idea of it. Every so often it messes up the club speed. My wedge is regularly around 110yrd but sometimes it would only show an 80yrd carry and weirdly last time i used it, my 8i was going further than my 7i!
      Doesnt do any ball tracking but calculates the ball path based on the club data.
      It does help if you know all of your club specs as you need to setup the whole set with lofts, lengths etc.
      Its a good little unit and at least gets you swinging when you can't get to the range/course. Definitely more of a recreational unit but its helping me become more consistent, just through the extra practice.

    Skytrak owner here, couple tips I have figured out to increase the accuracy of the readings:
    My hitting mat is elevated so I found that adjusting the height of the bottom of the actual unit to match the level of where the ball sits gets a more accurate reading.
    I have taken to marking a line around the entire ball with a sharpie and ball marker guide so the camera on the skytrak can see it, and it seems to pick up the spin rate more accurately and adjust carry distance accordingly.
    I carry 7 iron about 155-160 and driver about 260-70 (need to work on my efficiency!) so my speed isn't enough to cause serious issues either, I think.

      I wouldn’t wait too long. Most units under $10K use either radar(Mevo+) or high speed camera(SkyTrak) to track golf shots. The mega expensive units like GC Quad and Trackman, use both. Niether radar alone or high speed camera systems are perfect. But they are affordable and reasonably accurate. Accurate enough to give you a good idea of what your ball is doing. I was going to buy the Mevo+ but realized I didn’t have the necessary distance from unit, to the ball, to the net (about 15-16’). I got the SkyTrak and am very happy. Again it’s not perfect. It misses shots every once in a while, but it gives me a fairly accurate assessment of my shots. For me, that’s good enough and I still have money in the bank.

    I own a Skytrak since 1 year now (got it last year in December right before lock down) and have a basic net and practice mat setup in my garage. It helped me tremendously to improve my game over the winter and also during summer.
    I was a beginner last year and was 100+ player. This season broke 100 and broke 90 a few times.
    ST comes with great features (paid) to practice like wedge matrix and random distance practice, bag mapping which helped dial in distances etc. Also planning to buy E6 or TGC for playing sim rounds this winter.
    The key with skytrak is how you align the unit with respect to the ball/ mat and target etc. there's a facebook page for Skytrak users which is super helpful too.

Another tip that may help with faster swing speed is placing the ball and inch or two behind the laser and pointing the logo toward the camera or having a ball with a line on it or markings. This seems to help get more accurate readings.

    Probably already on your guys' list, but I would like to see a test of the Wilson Staff Model R ball! Thanks guys, this was great. But for the average golfer there are multiple launch monitors that you should really look in to for testing. Sky track (obviously), Mevo+, GC2, etc. The more mid-range priced monitors. Then perhaps do the sub $500 test - Mevo, Rapsodo, SC300i, etc. That’s really where we weekend hackers are most likely to be, especially for practice at the range. Thanks.

I am now rolling to the back of the range at 350 yards, carrying 320+. My best BS is 184mph and CS 126mph. Still working to get faster. I'm 57 and should not be hitting this far! I'm not sure why you'd pay £2,000 for something that isn't all that accurate. If I'm using it to check my yardages and it's out by a couple of yards then it's not very useful. I'd like to know how you can actually check the accuracy of a machine, even GCQuad - how do we know that's accurate every time? Particularly spin, how do you check that?

    @mattparsons946 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Love it.
    Couple hints for those looking at Skytrak:
    1. You absolutely can use this outside at night. USE A LAMP. This thing is camera based (photometric) if it can’t see the ball, the reads are going to be garbage.
    2. Use as flat a plane as possible.
    3. I’ve heard that extremely fast swing speeds get a little crazy (Matty should show us that)
    4. Use a USB cable and PC. Almost no delay on the native app. The Golf Club 2019(super fun course simulation game) has a bit of a delay.
    5. If you are setting up a temp area, mark the area if you can. It’ll speed up deployment.
    I’ve been totally happy with it. If you are looking for a less expensive solution, it’s not a bad way to scratch the itch.

    • @BoilerTimmay
      @BoilerTimmay 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The camera is infrared. The less light the better. Also, good Wi-Fi connection has no more delay than usb.

      @@BoilerTimmay - I have used this at night. It barely reads anything without a light. With a light on the hitting area, it picks up more. I thought the same thing (re: dark vs. light), and when I tried it in a really dark area, and it was really bad at reading the ball.

    • @michael2782
      @michael2782 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tim Huser Perhaps a high intensity light, placed behind the ST, heats the ball making it more discernible to IR. At least my ST works better much better with a strong LED lamp at night (only misses on my lob wedge and that happens during daylight too).

  • @ClintWilber
    @ClintWilber 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know it's slight, but the Skytrak really should be flush with the hitting area. That 1/2-in to 1-in above the ball is going to make a difference. I've had SkyTrak for years and you do get the occasional misread, but it's been largely accurate. I really do question the accuracy in this particular test because the device is not flush with the ground. That sounds temperamental, but for a $2k device you take the goods with the bads. Also, I'm not trying to defend SkyTrak, but I've learned some of these quirks over the years. During higher swing speed shots, it's smart to set the ball a little bit behind the laser. That way it gives the device a little bit more time to read the shot.

    I can go rent a Trackman at $40/hr which would give me 40 - 50 hours of practice time with super accurate numbers. SkyTrak isn't for me at all. I don't want to go to the course next spring and expect my 7 iron to carry 180 yards only to see it fall short. I don't want to adjust my driver to lower my spin and then see 50 foot high knuckle balls off the tee. Nope. I think it may do more harm than good.

  • @clevited
    @clevited 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would be really cool if you do a revisit with a different unit and see if there is any change. Ball speed wise, that is completely opposite of what the majority of "elite" ball speed guys have observed when tested vs GC2s, or Trackmans (spin can be inconsistently accurate I have found regardless of what others in here say). I do believe it isn't your GCQ lying to you (better not be right?) but I do think something is wrong with that unit or your environment causing it to read speed too high. I don't think your set up is causing issues. It could be light curtain problems, and or cameras out of alignment. If you get a different unit and no change, then it is either some issue in your environment causing a problem or Skytrak broke it with a firmware or app update and they need to correct it.
    -If you didn't try already, hit balls in your bay with all the lights off. ST can see in the dark no problem.
    -If you have a lot of natural light in your bays, this is a huge problem with ST. It is near impossible to use outside on a sunny day. It will either no read constantly, or misread like crazy.
    -Totally keep it out of that metal case for any future tests. It just eliminates one variable and there is no way either of you would hit it. If you did, that would make for a funny video!
    -It would be best to test both with simultaneous shot captures. You can stagger the units on the same side of you, or straddle the ST and put it in right handed mode (for Matt).
    -It helps to use balls with designs or logos on them like Taylormade Pix, or any perhaps a TXG logo ProV1? This just eliminates another variable so you get the best results that can be expected by any normal consumer.
    Anyways, I hope to see you visit this one again, and also cover some other affordable launch monitors. Good stuff.

    I own a skytrak and I can tell you that If the unit is too high in my setup (24,000 lumen of lighting overhead) it sometimes just doesn’t read at all. When it does read, the numbers are way off with driver. I’ll see as low as 150 and sometimes 200mph when the unit isn’t level with the ball. I’m currently a low 180 ball speed player off driver. The skytrak is very accurate and when you consider the cost it really helps to justify the unit if you’re ok with just ball data. I mentioned lighting above as I feel the better the lighting in the area the better the accuracy is when you start getting into higher speeds; just my own observation.

Comments about it needing to be flush with the hitting surface are interesting as quad doesn't seem to have that issue. Guess one wouldn't really be able to use Skytrack on course either.

    The Skytrak isn't set up correctly guys. Needs to be flush with the mat; also doesn't look like you're pointing a logo or line on the ball towards the unit, having a line on the ball pointing to the unit helps pick up spin numbers more accurately. Also, with your swing speed, have the ball an inch or two behind the dot with the driver.

It’s not perfect, but you may find the Mevo+ will have its own issues as well. Mevo+ uses radar, and Skytrak uses high speed camera. Both are not perfect. Some of the cheapest launch monitors on the market use radar i.e., Sky Caddie. Either unit is doable for their price point, they just go about tracking differently. The only issue I have with Mevo+ is the floor space you need for accuracy- 16” from unit to the net. I couldn’t manage that so the Skytrak worked out better for me.
