this video inspired me to work with tyler. i had my first lesson with him yesterday. all i can say is WOW. his enthusiasm and deep knowledge were inspiring. in a short span he had me hitting effortless, half power swings that were going as far as my full effort swing from pre-lesson warmup. tyler said we have to reassess our goals because we can accomplish so much more. i have never been so excited about my game!
I can honestly say, that in the year of Covid, I took this video to the chipping & pitching area, and worked on this technique 3 days a week for months - and my handicap dropped from 11 to 5. Shortening the swing enough so that you have to load the shaft and actually hit/drive pitch shots, thinner with the lower few groves, is a life-changer.
I’ve watched a lot of golf TH-cam but you boys have got me hooked on your channel. Love the mix of your content and the fact that you are now starting to focus on practice over the winter months Keep it coming gents 👊🏻
Out of every golf video I've ever seen, this has helped me out the most with my game. I started changing my swing thought with imagining a weight on my club head and I'm pulling it through the shot and not hitting at the golf ball.
So good to watch Matt being able to execute great instruction and demonstrate what a difference it makes. It seems so obvious and you instantly know it is the right advice. Just the more difficult element of being able to try and do it myself now! I have watched so many of the TXG videos now I feel like Ian and Matt are personal friends.
I love these guys because too many TH-cam lessons are for the high handicaps and beginner levels whereas these guys are simple but more of a scratch level instruction 👍
Love this video! It's one of the areas of the game that is so hard to learn by trial and error. You see the pros hitting these shots and think 'how can they get so much spin on sucha a short shot!’ it just doesn't make sense and no matter how steep and aggressive you swing it just doesn't spin. Now I know why. Really great teaching style as well, informative and inclusive without being patronizing.
Love the channel with mix of master fitting and sprinkle of lessons to blend results. Props to you Ian. I love Matt’s humble and open minded approach, sure it’s been beneficial on the course. That being stated love to see some variability with other player profiles and fitters. You two represent the top 1%. You found how to tickle my engineering brain with love of golf.
It seems like when Matt caught the ball super clean, the spin really kicked up. Sounds like Tyler recommends this! Also, this would seem to marry up well with the most recent video on the Mizuno wedge fitting. Bounce brought contact lower on the face. So cool to see your fittings and knowledge get verified in real world testing guys!
Boys I've been watching this video a few times and practicing this shot a bunch the past few months. Just drained one today from 55 yards! Great tips cheers lads
Absolutely great information! Everyone I know is making this same error- myself included. I realize it will take practice to get the feel of this technique but what an eye opener. Thanks guys!
I find that a Hogan style, hip centric swing is very effective in the short game. I learned it by using ‘Five Lessons’ as my guide for re-tooling my swing from the feet up in 2008 after 20+ years of trying to swing like Nicklaus as learned from ‘Golf My Way.’ The essence of the Hogan swing is planting the back foot square to the target line, or even a bit turned inward for partial swings, then turning hips, shoulders and hands together in the backswing to create twisting tension and torque in the back leg and hip exactly like twisting a torsion bar. By the time the club shaft is swung up level with the ground in the backswing the resistance of the back foot will load the back leg with the resistance of the hip turn stopping the hips 45° closed to target with the club head extended in the lead arm always in the same place in 3D space ready for the force created by the heave backwards to cock the wrist. It is the loading of the back leg which allows a VERY forceful downswing and rapid acceleration of the club head into the ball. In ‘Five Lessons’ Hogan suggests a drill with mid-iron (e.g. 7 iron) starting with only 1/4 back-swing and 1/4 finish (level to level with the shaft) with the goal of learning how to unleash the wound up tension in the back foot and let to allow hips to drag shoulders and hands back down to the ball forcefully.
Fantastic lesson!!! More more more!! (Please). It’s these types of seemingly simple and seldom practiced close range shots that really add up on a scorecard.
This series is gonna be pure gold! This one is near and dear to me. For the first time this past season I really dedicated serious practice time to my short game and it payed off. It all started with Larry’s 40/60/80/100 yd wedge system! 👍
I needed this.... There are two short par 4s at my home course that I have 60-70 yards in most of the time and should make birdie way for often. This is a big help.
This is the first video I have watched on your channel it came up as suggested. I have been and practiced my 50-100 yard pitch since watching it a couple of times and I can’t even exaggerate how much it helped me. I am suddenly in love with my wedges. Thanks so much! Subscribed. Will be checking out more of your videos
@@Wesquire but then your point is invalid because if there isn't universal advice why are you mad someone is sharing advice? Just ignore it if it's not for you.
very informative by watching how the technique executed by a student, NOT A PRO. Easy to relate and learn. Also enjoy how Tyler showed the original swing then how the swing improved to compare along with the spin rates. Excellent .
Excellent video. IMO one of the hardest things for us weekend players to come to grips with is hitting this shot low and with spin. We don't trust our swings enough and really fear that low screamer that flies 20 yds over the green. You can only overcome this with practice!!!
Matt, this is the best TXG Instructional video! Great job showing the process and the remedies to your swing faults. Looking forward to your progress inside 150 yards.
I was surprised at the spin rates at the start of the video. The highest was just over 5k which is way different than in a studio where people get 10-12k. Such a great video to show the difference between actual on course testing and studio testing
Another great vid has arrived! Pitching is my big flaw so I tend to chip even longer distances to avoid pitching. I'll add this exercise to my next range session for sure! Thanks Matt and Tyler.
You guys have such a gem channel here. Love all the different high quality content and how you can switch it up from different club reviews, shaft options, simulator course vlogs and absolutely love this instructor series. Keep it up and you guys will hit 100k before you know it!
Watched a few of your videos now and I have to say that you are great at simplifying and explaining a common issue that so many instructors struggle to explain. Great work👍. Now subscribed and looking forward to more of your videos
Such a tough shot. It's a feel shot. I've gotten better at not getting inside 85 yds which is a smooth LW but still end up in that 50yd range from time to time. This was super helpful on how to dial this shot in and what to look for on numbers.
Tried this at a driving range today, absolutely loved it, ball flight was lower but with so much more biting power. Will have to rework my distance control thought😂
experiment with loft, bounce and length of swing for desired shot and keep a record in a book so whether it's a 20 /50/60/80 or 100yard shot.for me that helps my distance control with my wedges.
There’s where the importance of bounce on wedges is often overlooked. Intuition says you need to be steep to generate more spin but nothing can be further from the truth.
I am watching from a very smokey (bushfires) East Coast Australia. We are coming into our peak summer season at present. Your videos are true 'golf porn' gents. I can't keep away from them. Its my non dirty secret. So informative and easy to follow without the 'BS' spin or pushing products. Very refreshing. Keep up the fantastic work. I have been pushing your site to all my other 'mad' golfer mates here in Oz, the feedback is very positive across the board gents. Well done, well done. Now to head off for my weekly game and see if I can actually put some of these fantastic tips into play. I need to get some of the money back from my playing group - hopefully. Dave
Awesome video. I think it’s good to note that we’re not changing the swing when your chipping. I see a lot of guys and also myself making changes to the swing being more handsie.
This video was huge for me last season. The 40-80yd shot went from being a weakness in my game to being strength. Now i'm thinking let's get this close and make that up and down for birdie, rather than thinking don't mess this up and possibly make bogey.
This is exactly me!! I’d much rather be coming in from 190 with a 6iron than from 50 with a fiddly wedge.... shorter and more aggressive sounds like a great swing thought. And super passive hands
Haven't watched it yet but I can't wait, this distance is a weird distance for me. I find myself using a 7 iron and doing almost like a half swing/chip style swing
I presume ball is a little back in the stance. Will degree of bounce have an effect here or will the be determined by the softness/hardness of the ground?
watching this again and it really is eye opening how many false assertions people have with these type of shots that are covered in this short video. One thing that would be interesting is to have a shot tracer on the before and after swings. It's one thing to see the change in launch angle, but it would be interesting to visually see the change in ball flight as well.
Very nice video for sure. Well done👍 This shot I 90% of the time use a PW. Lower ball flight with a one hop stop. Would be curious if club selection plays a huge role in numbers and outcome.
The PW can be a great strategy at the start because it will allow to delivery a lower amount of loft and that is allowing the ball to grip the club. I've seen some players spin their 56 as much as their 60 degrees. But usually if you can deliver the correct loft with 58 or 60 you will have more club speed in that shot to give the potential for more spin.
ive been striving towards this move with my wedge shots but this was just the information I needed. I was doing a similar move with a slightly longer backswing and less aggressive/abbreviated follow through and struggling with consistency and higher on the face shots. I can't wait to try a more abbreviated backswing, feel the club load just a tad and rotate through with a nice finish. this made so much sense. I'd be curious to see how this move relates to even shorter 25-yard shots. same principals just even more abbreviated and less aggressive? also when i need to get the ball up and over a bunker, would i default back to the steeper/more flippy swing and just have to practice to get more consistent?

This lesson was custom made for me. I have more confidence with a 3 wood off the deck than a 50 yard wedge shot
moreme40 same weird that I hit more greens with a 4 iron than I do with a LW
@GW H Agree, problem is everyone likes to hit the long shots.
Playing pitch n putt will bring down your hcp dramatically
3,wood?
I hit more greens from 151-230 than i do within 150-50 yards
Did you come from another swing/rotation sport cause this seems to be a common problem with those of us coming in from other sports

It's good content but this is far from universal advice. Passive arms and rotating more on 50y pitches would be shank city for tons of players.
